Personally, this is my favorite time of the year. I LOVE driving with the wind in my hair on a warm summer night, catching lightning bugs in the front yard and kicking my feet up at a good ol’ Braves game with a hot dog, a cold Coke and a box of Cracker Jacks. Now that’s living!

Q: Is my child old enough

The WellStar Foundation raised more than $800,000 during the first private event at The Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre in the Battery Atlanta adjacent to SunTrust Park. D

r. Don Parkerson’s impact on the Vinings and Smyrna community can be seen not only through his work as a chiropractic doctor at HP Spine Center but also through his community involvement with his children’s local sports leagues and his passion for enhancing this city as the president of the Rotary Club of Smyrna. As a child, he was raised in Eastman, Georgia, and worked as a chiropractic intern under his father. Parkerson now balances his family life with his professional responsibilities in Smyrna and utilizes his incredible outreach through all of his commitments.

What began as the Humber Clinic on Cobb Parkway developed into the HP Spine Center after Parkerson acquired the practice and transitioned with Dr. Wayne Neal and Dr. Drew Southerland into their current office in Smyrna. Through their unique practice of orthospinology that utilizes a special procedure that varies tremendously from the common “twisting and turning” of basic chiropractic services, Parkerson works with patients from across the country on their individual needs.

The specialty service utilizes balancing techniques and adjustments that target each patient individually and will not add any unnecessary exercises or procedures.

Parkerson entered the industry due to his

goal of assisting patients in resuming their health without drugs or surgery. Seeing patients return to their normal routines through a natural process motivates Parkerson each day.

As a family man, Parkerson focuses on enjoying family movie nights, complete with plentiful popcorn. Parkerson’s two children, Micah and Sadie, stay busy through their sports leagues and practices. Sadie’s efforts in volleyball and basketball along with Micah’s participation in football, basketball and Tonchu martial arts keep the Parkerson family on the move. Parkerson coaches the Upward Smyrna Leagues his children compete in as well.

With season tickets to support the Atlanta Braves, the Parkersons can be seen chopping at the new SunTrust Stadium just a short drive from their home. As members of Mount Paran Church, the Parkersons also enjoy giving back through their faith. Parkerson met his wife, Julie, through this church, so they have a special connection there.

Parkerson is the president of the Rotary Club of Smyrna, which works toward the goal of improving the city in every way possible through outreach. He is also involved with the International Chiropractic Association, the Georgia Chiropractic Association and the Society of Chiropractic Orthospinology. Parkerson also is involved with Operation Christmas Child every year and supports several missionaries around the world that provide dental and eye care in Africa. He believes it’s important to stay involved with this wonderful community he’s working in.

Don Whitney proudly balances his work as founder, president and CEO of Corporate Sports Unlimited Inc., Corporate Health Unlimited and Corporate Events Unlimited, The WE Event Series and the World Children’s Center with his Atlanta-based family. In fact, Whitney does not completely separate his work matters with his personal life—his wife of 27 years, Cathy, and son, Brian, both contribute to the business and work alongside Whitney to ensure everything runs smoothly.

When he’s not planning for the upcoming WE Event Series or focusing on the business, Whitney enjoys spending time on the golf course with his twin sons, Kevin and Brian. Kevin and his wife, Mackenzie—who are newlyweds—reside down the road in Buckhead, so the Whitneys can easily find time to enjoy a meal together or meet for a Sunday service at Mount Paran Church or Passion City Church. Whitney also has quite the background on the tennis court—he and his men’s team won the 55’s 8.0 National Men’s Doubles title last year.

He enjoys his title of dad just as much as his other business titles, and it’s his commitment to all of his duties that allow him to have such a profound impact on our wonderful city. In 2010, Whitney was named citizen of the year for the city of Smyrna and was a finalist for Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002 for Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.

Through Corporate Sports Unlimited Inc., Corporate Health Unlimited and Corporate Events Unlimited, Whitney can see his incredible efforts that began forming at just 25 years of age. What grew from a side business now sees over 300 employees working daily to 16

provide over 2,000,000 people annually with unique team building and special events through their corporations. Whitney and his leadership teams have also consulted with over 45 national clients in the health and fitness center club and spa industry, and they manage close to 20 businesses located right in the heart of Atlanta, 11 of which are at World Headquartered companies. His work does not stop there, however.

The World Children's Center has become one of his main focuses as of late, and he and his wife hope to be able to see its commencement in the next 24 months. Whitney is rebooting the U.S. 10K Classic as the WE Event Series in 2018 to benefit the continued work of children's charities to help banish hunger, malnutrition and child abuse and to assist in the work and additional resources for the center. The U.S. 10K Classic ran for 17 years in Cobb County and drove over $54 million in economic impact and contributed over $5 million to 30 local children’s charities.

The center will be able to provide a modern and unique home for children from Georgia and around the world who are either homeless, orphaned and/or neglected. With his twin boys so close to home and his wife right alongside all of his efforts, he is extremely thrilled to witness where all of his past efforts have gone. He trusts Kevin and Mackenzie will flourish in their careers and Brian will flourish while continuing to learn all aspects of the business. HOW DO I MANAGE TEMPER TANTRUMS A: Most toddlers go through a stage we like to call the “terrible

twos”. However, we think parents are starting to experience the “terrible ones”. Temper tantrums are starting earlier with toddlers. They are the hallmark of one of the more difficult behavioral periods for parents. The first goal, in managing temper tantrums, is for parents to understand that most toddlers will have tantrums. They are characterized by periods of falling out, screaming, crying for prolonged periods, stomping feet, and other behaviors. Frequently, if you are able to ignore and avoid eye contact during these periods, the behaviors will possibly subside or present for shortened periods of time. You will need to ensure the safety of your child prior to ignoring. This isn’t a method to utilize when outside of the home. Additionally, re-directing your child to a more desirable activity will assist in stopping undesired behaviors. Parents should support each other and ensure they engage in relaxing activities to avoid being frustrated with temper tantrums. If you have concerns of how to manage your child’s behavior, please ensure you schedule an appointment with your pediatrician.

Both developments came to fruition under the leadership of key executives from Braves Development Company and SunTrust Banks Inc. Recently, Vinings Lifestyle had the opportunity to speak with William "Bill" Rogers, Terry McGuirk and Jeremy Strife, all of whom helped guide experts and innovators throughout the process of making SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta a reality.

Terry McGuirk has been chairman and CEO of the Atlanta Braves since 2001. He is one of the many visionaries behind SunTrust Park, the state-of-the-art superstructure that combines some of the best features from ballparks across the country with world-class amenities.

“The ballpark is all baseball,” says McGuirk when speaking about the construction of the stadium. “Everything about it is designed for a baseball team, a baseball game...there was no other agenda.”

The park features Monument Garden, which highlights the history of the team and memorializes its most accomplished athletes, while other amenities include borrowing a Mizuno glove for the game.

McGuirk was adamant in emphasizing that the fan experience was just as important as meeting the needs of the team.

On April 14, the Braves kicked off their opening night at SunTrust Park with a four-game winning streak against the San Diego Padres.

“There’s no doubt that getting home, getting to this beautiful place, having the fan support was just a chance for [the Braves] to get relaxed, to get into a good frame of mind and let the talent take over,” McGuirk says.

Originally from Carthage, New York, Jeremy Strife was hired in 2015 as the vice president of Braves Development Company and general manager of The Battery Atlanta. He has lived all over the United States but says of Vinings, “the people are great, the hospitality is great, the food and the entertainment scene is well-developed.”

The Battery Atlanta, which he manages with great pride, is a mixeduse development that houses award-winning restaurants; large companies like Comcast, Spaces Atlanta and Dickey Broadcasting; and a cozy residential sector made up of 550 apartment homes in three phases: Parkside, Residences and Flats.

When speaking to Vinings Lifestyle, Strife said his passion is for “taking something that wasn’t serving the community to its highest potential and then creating something that’s going to be there [for] 50 or 100 years from now.”

Not only is The Battery Atlanta shaping up to be a gem but it also fulfills another one of Strife's aspirations which is to create, “a great central location” for visitors from all walks of life to build long-lasting memories.

Educators and staff will utilize daily activities and common situations to teach, develop, implement, and reteach appropriate social skills for the students’ developmental age. Several camps will be held over the summer including: 2 week-long sessions in June for middle/high age students and 2 week-long sessions in July for elementary age students. ummer sports leagues are a great way to meet new friends and get a dose of exercise. No longer just for school-age children, adult leagues are also available in the Smyrna/Vinings area.

SMYRNA SHARKS The Smyrna Sharks is a swim and dive team for ages 4-18 years. The seasonal league runs May-June, with the top qualifiers participating up until the GRPA state swim meet in July. The Sharks have won dozens of accolades, including first place finishes, top three finishes and have set state records. The team is in its 43rd year.

“Eighteen years ago, I signed my daughter up when she was five," Chris Lash, Smyrna Sharks board president, says. "I have been involved with the growth of the team from 80 members to its current 450-plus members. The two swim teams are among the top teams in Cobb County.” SmyrnaSharks.org

A fun game of flag football. The Atlanta Sport and Social Club has men's and coed flag football leagues for adults.

The Smyrna Soccer Club has been in the Smyrna/Vinings area for 30 years.

“We’ve recently been named one of the quickest growing clubs in the state of Georgia," Mike Gaziano, recreational program manager, says.

Those of you with young toddlers will love Little Lions, which accepts ages 18 months up to 3 years old. Their summer camps run Monday through Thursday each week in June and will be at Tolleson Park. Your children will get quality coaching here with both seasoned volunteer and highly qualified paid coaching staff. The older recreational children compete with other leagues in the area.
