Eye-Opening Experiences Traveling

raveling this summer? I plan to go somewhere fun. What about you? I can’t figure out if I want to do something local or go international. Traveling is such an eye-opening experience in many different ways.

I obtained my bachelor's degree from Hampton University in Virginia and my master's degree from the University of South Photo: Donna Permell, Carolina. You would not think that traveling to states on the PrimePhocus.com East Coast would be drastically different from Georgia. My first eye-opening experience traveling came in college when I noticed people from Canada, New York and Washington, D.C. talk and act differently than people from Georgia. It seems like such a simple thing, but it really surprised me. I embraced the differences and took the time to explore the northern part of the East Coast during breaks from school.

It was fascinating.

I remember the first time I went to Puerto Rico. As I stood in the airport listening to the announcers calling out flights, I was amazed there were so many translations one after another. Of course Spanish was the first announcement, then English, then French, then German followed by many other translations. I didn’t realize at the time that Puerto Rico was the international connection to the Caribbean. That was my second eye-opening experience while traveling and it made me want to travel more.

I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Fiji, my third eye-opening experience. Seeing another culture in their home country was fascinating. I didn’t realize there was such a large population of people from India in Fiji. When I visited, they were going through a controversial election, and there were militias on every corner. Wow, my first time seeing people walk around with machine guns. It was intense and thrilling in a weird way.

We traveled near and far in this issue to bring eye-opening experiences to Vinings. Write me with your own eye-opening experiences. The best story will win a prize.

t’s an exciting time to be in Smyrna. This April the Braves will go up to bat in their new home, Suntrust Park. A mere 4 miles down the street sits the recently opened Creatwood Tavern bringing its own form of excitement—the sports bar has the honor of being Smyrna’s only rooftop bar. There’s much more to this place than just a snazzy rooftop, though.

The offspring of the team behind Whitehall Tavern, Creatwood resides in the brand new mixed-use development Shops at Belmont at the intersection of Atlanta and Windy Hill Roads. Although it might seem like a neighborhood restaurant, Creatwood strives to be a destination spot for everyone in Smyrna.

“We have over 50 televisions, so we’re a sports destination,” co-owner Bret Bauer says.

Don’t let the sports vibe fool you, though. Creatwood is super welcoming of children and families.

“We’re a family friendly neighborhood tavern with upscale tavern food,” Bauer says.

Creatwood prides itself on having close ties with the community, particularly with Smyrna’s youth. In the restaurant there are games for the kids to play along with a kids menu—your little one will love the grilled cheese on brioche—and they sponsor local schools like Nickajack Elementary and Campbell High schools.

“We all come from a bar background and the community is looking for a home base,” says Bauer of why they value giving back to the community.

Bauer and the Creatwood team are eagerly anticipating the start of the Braves' season. Besides welcoming guests for pre-game

dinners and drinks, the tavern will offer a shuttle that runs from the restaurant to the stadium.

Paris is steeped in history and there are so many impressive sights to visit,

that you could live in Paris for an extended period and still not see everything of interest. Therefore, I will mention only a few highlights of a visit to Paris.

No trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. The eternal symbol of romance, the Eiffel Tower, or Tour Eiffel as it is known in France, is extraordinary. I propose visiting during the day and again in the evening as the two experiences will be completely different. I also highly recommend an evening River Seine boat tour. This romantic tour takes visitors past many well-known sights making for a spectacular view of Paris’ famous landmarks.

You’ll definitely want to stroll along the Champs-Elysees, the grandest tree-lined shopping avenue in all of Europe. Be sure to visit the Arc de Triomphe which honors those soldiers who fought in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Beneath the vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. While there, take in the breathtaking view of the Champs-Elysees from atop the Arc de Triomphe. Cycling fans will recognize the ChampsElysees as the site of the celebrated eight-lap dramatic cobblestone finish of the Tour de France which takes place there every July.

A visit to Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre is not to be missed. The Basilica du Sacré-Coeur is perched on a hill and its white domes can be seen from all over Paris. Situated in the Montmartre neighborhood, once popularized by artists such as Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, the area has retained its bohemian charms. The neighborhood, bursting with cafés and museums, remains a haven for artists and art-lovers.

If you enjoy art, you’ll want to visit two of the most famous museums in the world: The Louvre and Musèe d’Orsay. The Louvre is massive and you could spend several full days visiting the museum. Therefore, you may want to determine which exhibits (like the Mona Lisa) that you want to see and plan to return on a future visit to the City of Lights. The much smaller Musèe d’Orsay, housed in a converted railway station, is known for its superior collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art. You’ll find works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and many more of the great masters sprinkled throughout this breathtaking museum.

If you have enough time, take a day trip outside of Paris. The countryside surrounding Paris is beautiful and it will be a nice change of pace from the huge city. My all-time favorite day trip from Paris is a day in Chartres with a visit to the incredible Chartres Cathedral, one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in the entire world. Another option is a visit to the gorgeous Loire Valley, resplendent with castles, châteaux, and vineyards.

Paris, and all of France for that matter, holds an unforgettable and indelible place in the hearts of folks who have had the pleasure of visiting. If you’ve never been to Paris, you may want to plan a visit and find out for yourself the true meaning of joie de vivre. Create your own precious memories of the most beautiful and romantic city on the planet!

Cafés in Paris are places to see and be seen.

People watching at a café, observing Parisians in their day to day lives, is one of the great highlights of a visit to Paris. Linger over lunch or dinner or simply enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, but either way, relax and soak in the moment. The French have a way of living, being in the moment and enjoying life which they refer to as joie de vivre.

The rustic, log cabin feel of the room is both warm and cozy. The crackling of the real wood fire is inviting, and the king-size bed is beyond comfortable. Waking up in this rustic charm will have you well-rested and excited for the day ahead. There are an endless amount of activities at C Lazy U Ranch, and you’ll want to try them all! But before the fun begins, breakfast will be the way you want to start your day.

At the all-inclusive C Lazy U Ranch, all the food is five-star quality. Starting with breakfast in the main lodge, you’ll experience an open made-to-order menu as well as a full buffet. The wait staff is incredible and will accommodate you any way they can. If you have any food allergies, no problem. The chef will create something just for you. After your morning activities, you’ll experience an extensive buffet for lunch served poolside. It’s made to order daily with food for every appetite. Horseback riding is the main attraction at C Lazy U Ranch. It truly is every horse lover’s dream to ride in this beautiful scenery with such stellar horses. With a herd of 180 horses, there is a horse for every

Academic Coaching is more than tutoring, it is a broad approach to helping your child acquire the necessary tools to be successful in the classroom. • Remediation/Support – Individual program for those below, but within two years of grade level.

• Coaching – Individual program for those who are on grade level, but require support. We can also help students review and prepare for EOG (3rd – 8th grade) or EOC (9th – 12th grade) standardized state tests/examinations.

• Development of Executive Function Skills – Designed to address the eight key executive functions instrumental in academic acquisition and learning including: impulse control, emotional control, flexible thinking, working memory, self-monitoring, planning/prioritizing, task initiation and organization.

• Development of Study Skills – Designed to work with students to develop key study skills that often times impact a student’s academic performance, such as time management, note-taking, reading/decoding of questions, environment, proper value and habits).

• ACT/SAT Preparation – This program is designed to help students prepare for their high-stakes tests providing them specific skills and review of content generally presented on these tests.
