Fall into October

T

he changing of the colors from vibrant, summery greens to autumnal yellows, rusty oranges and dark reds.

The shorter days spent at school and outside and the cooled-off weather after those dreaded dog days of summer. The smell and crunch of freshly-fallen leaves, the taste of warm apple cider and perfect pumpkin pastries—so much pumpkin.

The windows-open Saturday football days and the chili-in-theCrock-Pot Sunday football afternoons.

The commencement of all of these wonderful things can only mean one thing: fall is in the air.

BE Orthodontics Celebrates National Orthodontic Health Month

Just say NO to hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, bubblegum, jelly beans

BE Buys Back Candy to Support Breast Cancer What do braces and breast cancer have in common? They both ROCK the month of October! Most of our patients are familiar with Breast Cancer Awareness Month but did you know October is also National Orthodontic Health Month. As an orthodontic practice with two female doctors you can understand how important both causes are to us! This month BE Orthodontics and our staff are helping patients avoid potentially “sticky” situations by buying back those chewy, gooey, sticky candies that can wreak havoc on your braces (not to mention extend treatment time)! For every pound of candy you bring in we will donate $1.00 to the Breast Cancer Society AND you will be entered into a drawing for a four-pack admission to Ultimate Escape Game OR a $200 VISA gift card! (You do not have to be a patient to participate!) All candy must be received by November 13 and will be shipped to Operation Gratitude’s Halloween Candy for Heroes- providing our troops with yummy treats from home!

MAXIMUM PHYSICAL POTENTIAL is my

Passion AMY FARTHING PT, DPT

H

elping my patients achieve their maximum physical potential is my passion. It is important for all of us to maintain a healthy

lifestyle to help reduce the risk of injury, especially as we age. As a physical therapist, I work with many different types of people with varied goals and backgrounds. There is no “cookie cutter” individ-

ual; therefore your goals are my goals. Whether it is recovering from surgery, a sports-related injury or whatever the case may be, we will work together to get you back to your life. TIPS FOR PREVENTING INJURY

1. Choose a realistic workout for you. Be sure to ease into anything new, especially anything high impact. 2. Proper technique is key. Poor form can lead to injuries. 3. Warm up properly. 5-10 minutes of cardio or dynamic stretching can help start your workout right to avoid injuries. 4. Listen to your body. No pain/no gain is not the way to work out. You have a greater risk of injury if you are pushing through the pain. 5. Vary your workouts. This will help avoid overuse injuries, provide good muscle balance and prevent boredom. 6. Proper nutrition and hydration is a must. Prevent dehydration, fatigue and injury by drinking plenty of water and eating healthy, well-balanced meals. 7. Cool down and stretch after working out. This is the time for

What can I do to eliminate the stains?

First I would recommend having your teeth cleaned if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while. There are certain foods that cause stained teeth that you should limit and avoid. Coffee, certain teas, red wine, dark drinks can all cause stains. To decrease staining, it’s best to rinse your mouth with water for 30 seconds after consumption. Sometimes those stains can actually be decay, so it’s best to see the dentist if you’re having a difficult time removing stains at home.

Are my headaches coming from my neck? The root cause of migraine and tension headaches is often Cervicogenic, which means a headache caused by the neck. Misalignment of the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) at the junction of the head and neck is the most common cause of cervicogenic headaches. The result of neck misalignment is nerve pressure and muscle spasm, which can trigger a headache at the base of the skull or temples. The first goal in treating headaches is correcting the balance between the head and neck. One simple test is to run your fingers along the base of your skull. If you feel tension at the upper part of your neck, that is a great sign that your headaches are coming from your neck. Another test is to look in the mirror and see if your head is tilting to one side. If you have head tilt, your head and neck are likely misaligned and that could be causing your headaches.

SPORTS MOMENTS STEVE HELLIER — WHITEFIELD ACADEMY’S VARSITY BOY'S HEAD SOCCER COACH

This is Coach Hellier’s 19th year at Whitefield Academy.

1.

The miracle season experienced by the

2017 Whitefield boys soccer team. Against all odds, we won the state championship, but the memory of these young men supporting one another and honoring something far greater than themselves is what I cherish the most.

2.

Winning the South Carolina state

championship as a senior in high school was a big moment for me. In the final game, we upset the reigning state champs—and heavily favored opponents—in overtime.

3.

Quarterfinals of Whitefield’s boy's

soccer championship. We stayed focused, on point and our team did a complete 180. A very proud coaching moment.

4.

The Falcons 2017 Super Bowl col-

lapse. I humbly confess that during that disaster I became frightfully aware that sporting events were far too important in my life.

5.

Mid-season, competitive cross-coun-

ty tournament—our team learned a valuable lesson after that game. Never let words of another team or player cause you to lose sight of your goal. The greatest response to bad sportsmanship is to win on the field.

My first ever out-of-the-park home run

during an end-of-season tournament against Hillgrove. I was in the seventh grade.

3.

Playing at ASA Nationals for the first

time this past August was an awesome opportunity for me to see how well I could compete with the best teams in the country.

4.

Attending three Division I college soft-

ball camps this summer—University of Kentucky, where I met Coach Lawson; University of NC at Chapel Hill and met Coach Papa; and the University of Alabama. My goal is to play softball in college.
