This inaugural Best of Smyrna/Vinings issue is brought to you by you. Our initial call for readers to nominate local businesses they love as a best of Smyrna/Vinings business yielded thousands of results. We added all the businesses nominated into a survey with 43 different categories including restaurants, home services, personal care services, and services for kids and pets. Over 30,000 votes were cast during a six week period via an online form. After tabulating the responses, we found our Best of Smyrna/Vinings winners. While every category winner can probably be debated, the end result is that the Vinings and Smyrna areas are home to some fantastic businesses. Smiles All Around VININGS DENTISTS FIND SYNERGY TOGETHER TO BUILD THRIVING PRACTICE.
M
utual friends introduced Drs. Dina Giesler and Marianna Kovitch in 2011. A shared passion for comprehensive dentistry sparked
their professional partnership, now five years strong. “It was like fate,” says Kovitch. “We instantly hit it off.” Located within the Post Riverside residential complex in Vinings, Atlanta Smiles & Wellness has treated 3,500 patients over the last two years, according to Giesler. She estimates the practice has 30-40 new patients a month. In addition to serving a roster of general dentistry patients, Atlanta Smiles also performs cosmetic dentistry procedures as well as extractions, crowns, implants and whitening. Kovitch estimates 40 percent of treatments are cosmetic procedures. Both dentists espouse a patient care philosophy centered on overall health. This means screening for underlying medical problems that can leave signs in the mouth such as oral cancer, sleep apnea, Crohn’s Disease, irritable bowel syndrome and diabetes. “We are really part of the whole medical team,” explains Giesler. The pair believe in a personalized and conservative approach to dental treatments. Kovitch describes it as striving for the most effective but minimally invasive option available, and giving the patient

choices when possible. “There is no universally perfect treatment, but there is a perfect treatment for each person,” she says. Geisler started Atlanta Smiles and Wellness from scratch when she relocated from Houston, Texas in 1999. Kovitch came on board after graduating from Dental School in 2011, and became an official business partner in 2015. Between the two of them, Kovitch and Giesler have received over 15 professional honors and accolades. Geisler is among less than one percent of American dentists to achieve the distinction of Master Dentist by the Academy of General Dentistry. She has been recognized as a “top dentist” by various publications. In 2007, she received the Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry for her work helping survivors of domestic violence with dental reconstruction. Several years newer to the profession, Kovitch has gained impressive honors as well. Among these is a fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantology for her work in placing and restoring dental implants.

Apple Crumb Muffins
F
all is just around the corner, and that calls for a little bit of spice, and a lot of everything nice. It also calls for baked goods which evoke
warm and fuzzy memories for the cool mornings ahead. To keep with the 'Best Of' theme for the month, here's one of the best muffin recipes even the pickiest of eaters can't refuse: Apple Crumb Muffins. These delicious muffins use the best ingredients of the season: a mixture of sweet Pink Lady and tart Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, cardamom and, of course, sugar. The muffins come together quickly and bake in under 30 minutes. These muffins make fantastic breakfast treats, after school snacks, or as a nice addition to bring to the next potluck brunch. They freeze well too! THE BEST APPLE CRUMB MUFFINS CRUMB MIX INGREDIENTS:
MUFFIN INGREDIENTS:
⅓ cup brown sugar
½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
1 tb granulated sugar
½ cup dark brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
2 eggs, room temperature
⅔ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup sour cream 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt ¼ cup milk 2 small apples, chopped
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees and grease muffin pan. In a small bowl, make the crumb topping. Combine both sugars, cinnamon and melted butter. Fold in the flour until it’s all coated. The mixture will be thick. Set aside. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, or with handheld beaters, beat the butter on high until smooth. Add the sugars and beat on high until combined. sour cream and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for one minute until the texture is smooth. Add the dry ingredients and beat on low speed, being careful not to over mix. Add the milk and combine on low speed. Gently fold in the apples. Spoon the muffin batter into the muffin pan’s cups, filling each cup to the top. Top with the crumb topping being sure to pat the topping down to ensure it stays on the muffin. Bake for 5 minutes and then turn the temperature down to 350 degrees and bake for another 20-25 minutes. The muffins should be golden on top, and a toothpick stuck in the middle should come out clean. Let cool off a bit and enjoy!

T
he arrival of college football season makes southerners as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. There are only a few Saturdays down here when white-tailed bucks graze peacefully in open pastures and doves fly unmolested over soft brown fields of sunflower while hunters exchange their camouflage for collegiate jerseys. Staunch southern Republicans and Democrats stand united with those who have never cast a vote to support their mutual teams. I grew up on the Chattahoochee River in Vinings across the street from Kim King, the most prolific passer in Georgia Tech’s history, who later became a storied GT radio broadcaster, successful developer and generous philanthropist. Kim’s 'hero status' at GT greatly benefited me and my friend, Beau, Kim’s son. We climbed around GT’s ‘Ramblin’ Wreck’ Model-A and tossed the pigskin with the legendary quarterback on Grant Field. Yet, despite Beau’s strong encouragement to swarm with his beloved yellow jackets, I have always bled red and black. In the South, you simply have to choose sides because loyalty and allegiance matter. Football stadiums reminiscent of the ancient Roman coliseums fill with upstanding citizens who morph into seemingly bloodthirsty mobs chanting for victory and the downfall of their opponents. These stadiums collectively hold more than a million seats which sit quietly vacant six days a week before swelling to the size of cities on a handful of fall Saturdays reverently referred to as ‘Gameday.’ SATURDAYS IN THE SOUTH MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS IN DIFFERENT STADIUMS.
• In Knoxville, Tennessee, fans proudly adorn orange attire that could not be given away and fill one of the world’s largest stadiums singing ‘Rocky Top’ on an endless loop. Their mascot, a Bluetick 42

Coonhound named Smokey, proudly leads the Volunteers onto the field through the “T” formed by the marching band. • Generations of families travel to Tuscaloosa’s famed BryantDenny Stadium where the Crimson Tide has only lost about fifty games there since it opened in 1929. The visiting team's locker room is literally named “The Fail Room.” Tickets are coveted like passes to the Masters tournament. Every home game has been sold out since 1988. • Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium becomes Alabama's 5th largest cities on game days when it welcomes 87,451 screaming Tiger fans. The 'Deep South's Oldest Rivalry' of UGA/AU began in 1892, and yielded essentially an even win-loss record. • Over in Oxford, Ole’ Miss’ co-eds, dressed in their Sunday-best, tailgate beneath three hundred year old oak trees in ‘The Grove’ where they celebrate the ‘Walk of Champions’ and exchange the mysterious greeting: “Hotty Toddy!” • Down in Gainesville FL, gator fans are known to don their jorts (jean-shorts) and slither into a stadium they call “The Swamp” where they clap sun-baked arms in a ritualistic reptilian imitation. Fall Saturdays for me are spent in my beloved Sanford Stadium in Athens where, since 1929, the Georgia Bulldawgs have fought valiant battles “between the hedges”. Few things excite me more than listening to the lone bugler play its soulful Battle Hymn before "our boys" thunder onto the gridiron to the deafening roar of the bulldawg nation. No matter which team you support, Southerners’ love of college football with all of its deeply-rooted traditions and rivalries, is part of the rich character and common bond that defines us. Soon, players and fans from other parts of the country will have the moxie to challenge our teams and that will afford us the opportunity to welcome them to Saturdays down South. I can hardly wait…
