“
My son, now 3.5, started taking lessons at The Swim Revolution right at age 3. The summer before he was so afraid of the water that he wouldn't go near it. I was terrified he would fall in by accident and I would have my hands tied with my older daughter. After just 2 months of swim class, my son's fear completely subsided and he started to develop a real love for the water. By the end of this past summer he was able to swim completely independently! I cannot even explain the level of ease and confidence I had going to the pool with my kids this past summer. Before The Swim Revolution, I was terrified to be at the pool with my kids. Now I know my son would be able to save himself and stay afloat in case of an emergency. We chose to continue his lessons once summer ended because we didn’t want him to regress in his swimming skills and he seems to love it so much! I cannot wait for this coming summer when both my 4 and 6 year olds will be swimming on their own at the pool and beach! Thank you Swim Revolution!
- Andrea (Smyrna & Current Swim Revolution Mom)
Little beginner swimmers need an average of 4-6 months of swim lessons before they’re swimming floatation free. Once they’re doing that,

Hotel Indigo celebrated it's grand opening on November 19, 2015.
The new hotel also features some new technology, too. The Neighborhood Guide, as seen at other Hotel Indigo properties, is a touchscreen display unit which allows guests to connect with others at the hotel, the local community, and people at Hotel Indigo locations around the world. The Hotel Indigo Atlanta - Vinings hotel is owned by Rialto Capital Management, and managed by Valor Hospitality Partners.
SMYRNA ROTARY CLUB DONATES STEM EQUIPMENT TO TEASLEY ELEMENTARY When Smyrna Rotary Club learned Teasley Elementary was in need of new technology equipment, they stepped up right away. Teasley Elementary’s STEM teacher Erin Sumners said, “We want robotics technology to teach our students coding and computer programming. They are extremely excited about technology and robotics, and I hope to offer them growing experiences.” Smyrna Rotary Club responded to this need with $3,500 of technology including 12 Bee-Bots, 12 activity mats and two docking/charging stations for Grades K to 2 as well as 40 Ozobots for Grades 3 to 5. Smyrna Rotary Club donated STEM equipment to Teasley Elementary.
HOTEL INDIGO ATLANTA - VININGS IS NOW OPEN! After much work and a pushed back opening, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) opened the third installation of the Hotel Indigo brand in metro Atlanta. The 160-room hotel is located at 2857 Paces Ferry in the heart of Vinings, steps from the shops and restaurants in Vinings Jubilee. This boutique hotel is striving to be a space for both hotel guests and locals to relax together in a chic, yet comfortable setting. Guests at the Hotel Indigo Atlanta - Vinings are greeted by artwork, furniture, and custom-created pieces to embody the history and feel of the Vinings area. This includes a front desk that resembles whiskey barrels as the area once produced a high quantity of whiskey. Influences of Nellie Mae Rowe, famed American folk artist, and a previous owner of the land the hotel sits on, can be seen throughout the hotel in the bold color palette. There are also murals and other art in guestrooms and elevator lobbies that feature the history of Vinings as a riverfront town. In addition to the hotel, The Public House at Vinings, the hotel's restaurant has opened too. Located in the lobby of Hotel Indigo Atlanta - Vinings, guests can enjoy southern-styled cuisine, with a local flavor as well as hand-crafted cocktails.
“Bee-Bots are a kid-friendly robot that will teach the 480 students in Grades K-2 coding, sequencing, problem solving and estimation," explains Sumners. "The Ozobots are for grades 3-5’s 355 students to learn coding and sequencing using iPads or their own drawings.”
Guestrooms feature unique hard-surface flooring, plush bedding, and spa-inspired bathrooms. Guests have access to a 24-hour fitness

focusing on the future. Our Club is really interested in doing all that it can for our community. Smyrna’s kids need to have the best chances that they can at getting into great colleges and having great jobs. When Smyrna will need employees or customers, there is a good chance that they will come from Teasley Elementary and our other schools. This is why we have done project after project in the area’s schools including a recent $4,500 robotics grant at Griffin Middle School. Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators, consumers and leaders. The better they are, the better our community’s long-term success and prosperity.” Smyrna Rotary Club is currently having a membership drive

PLACES TO VISIT IN GEORGIA 1. DRIVE THE GEORGIA BREWS AND Q’S TRAIL (Historic Heartland Re-
gion). Spanning 14 counties from Athens to Perry, Georgia’s first barbecue and beer trail highlights the best in saucy eats and thirst-quenching drinks. mons Island vacationers, upgrades have made this an inviting destination unto its own. New hotels such as the Westin Jekyll Island, coupled with the recently completed Jekyll Island Beach Village and beachfront Convention Center, as well as the storied Jekyll Island Club Hotel, have given a renewed feel to this Georgia coastal treasure. 3. DUNAWAY GARDENS (Newnan). Celebrities such as
Walt Disney frequented these gardens that also served as a theatrical training ground for the performing arts from the 1920s to 1940s. Eventually forgotten and overgrown, the gardens were restored and gates reopened in 2005 and are now one of the Southeast’s largest natural rock and floral gardens. 20

F
or more than 10 years, Diamond Dallas Page was one of the most recognizable professional wrestlers in the world. During his time in the World Championship Wrestling, Page became a three-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, two-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, four-time WCW World Tag Team Champion, and won the WCW World Television Championship once, as well as a WCW Triple Crown Champion. But Page, unlike most professional wrestlers, began his career in his early thirties. Originally a manager, Page quickly gained the support of fans and pro-wrestlers alike, and began official training at the WCW Power Plant in his mid-30s. He was the oldest rookie in the history of pro-wrestling. With his trademark work ethic, determination, and style, Page reached champion status within five years and began a career that would propel him into acting, writing, and motivational speaking. There was nothing he couldn’t do. No one he couldn’t beat. Until it all ended. After a string of back and neck injuries, Page allowed his wrestling contract to expire in 2002. He was at a crossroads. “Because of my injuries, yoga was the only thing I could do,” Page says. “For years, I was the guy who wouldn’t be caught dead doing yoga. But I noticed a significant difference when I added yoga to my rehab moves. And I ended up creating the workout by accident.”

DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE (CON TI N U ED)
The workout he created is DDP Yoga, an enhanced yoga program that focuses on resistance, core strength, cardio, and flexibility. It is literally for everyone – young, old, injured, obese, or just out of shape – because there is no need for fancy equipment or tools. Your body is your machine. One of the most desirable things about this program, however, is that minimal stress is placed on your joints. DDP Yoga provides an intense, effective workout without hurting your body in any way. Many professional athletes have adopted DDP Yoga as their main source of exercise, including WWE wrestlers. Page designed DDP Yoga to be more than just a workout. He built a performance center in Smyrna and developed an app, both of which will provide many resources including live workout videos, cooking demonstrations, workshops, and even recipes. Page wants to educate the people of this community and show them that health isn’t only attained via exercise, but also through putting the best food you can into your body. For instance, many of the DDP Yoga workshops focus on the workout as well as meal prep and eating guidelines. Page believes in clean eating – gluten/wheat/ diary free, organic fruits and vegetables, and free range meats.
“I believe in whole, real food. All the health problems that have appeared during the last 20 years? The one thing that’s changed is the food,” says Page.
WHERE DOES PAGE WANT TO TAKE DDP YOGA IN THE FUTURE?
“I want DDP Yoga to be a household name,” Page says. “I want people to realize that there are so many different kinds of yoga, that it’s not only calm. I want to change the meaning.” Diamond Dallas Page has seen his share of ups and downs, but he never, ever gave up. He strives to impart that determination to others, and his passion is obvious. With dozens of success stories already, DDP Yoga is poised to be part of the next fitness revolution.
WHAT IS DDP YOGA? This ain't your momma's yoga! Diamond Dallas Page originally developed DDP YOGA for athletes like himself who had suffered years of injuries due to high-impact sports. It is the yoga for people who "wouldn't be caught dead" doing yoga, or anything like it. It combines the very best techniques of yoga, traditional fitness, sports therapy and dynamic resistance to create one of the most effective fitness plans in existence today. And it is something that anybody can do! The main benefits of DDP Yoga are body fat loss, lean muscle growth, and improved cardio levels all without placing undue stress on the joints. DDP YOGA is currently used by professional football players, over 40 professional wrestlers, MMA fighters, and regular everyday people who want to see life-changing results and improve their quality of life. DDP Yoga has been featured on Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Doctor's among many others. Classes are held at the DDP Yoga Performance Center at 1239 Concord Rd SE Smyrna GA 30080. Individual classes are $15 each and are held nearly every day of the week. Passes to multiple classes can be bought at discounted rates. 30

Speaking for Those Who Can't Speak for Themselves MEET SPECIAL NEEDS ADVOCATE KIMBERLY FISHER ARTICLE BY RUKSANA HUSSAIN | PHOTOGRAPHY AMY LEE

imberly Fisher is many things. She can be called an art collector, philanthropist, special needs advocate, travel enthusiast, home cook extraordinaire and business manager. However, her most beloved titles include wife and mom. Kimberly is the wife to Smyrna's well-known orthodontist, Dameon Fisher, and mother to 11-year-old Mackenzie, who has been diagnosed with autism. She is also the director of operations for Fisher Orthodontics of Atlanta, and has served the community alongside her husband since 1999. Fisher Orthodontics has now grown to include three locations. A true passion Kimberly shares with her husband is a love of art. They enjoy adding to their art collection which includes several Radcliffe Bailey pieces, as well as ones from Kevin Cole, and acclaimed early-20th century artist, Charles White. Their Smyrna home is a testament to this creative zeal. A healthy appetite for travel prevails as well. The Fisher family has enjoyed many trips to the Caribbean over the years. They love to island-hop while soaking up the easy beach life. The Fishers also relish spending free time relaxing at their vacation home in Big Canoe. Kimberly and Dameon Fisher attending Kimberly is a member of Delta Sigma an art festival in New York City. Theta, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women - MECCA chapter, and the North Suburban Atlanta chapter of Jack and Jill. She is also busy with the rigorous schedule that accompanies raising her special needs daughter, who is in fourth grade at Nickajack Elementary in Smyrna. A strong interest in advocating for all special needs children has Kimberly serving on two foundation boards. At Dentistry for the Developmentally Disabled, she is the patient advocate, helping parents facing issues and facilitating assistance with resources. She also serves on the board of the Dream Makers Youth Foundation, which helps children with special needs engage in sports and other Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Kimberly loves living in the creative and athletic opportunities. rue heart health - not the kind that comes from diet and exercise - is a
key and often overlooked piece of wellness. It’s the kind that comes from giving one hour, dollar, Saturday, or element of your schedule. That kind of health can help change the trajectory of one life. According to a study published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology, people who give social support to others tend to have lower blood pressure, recover from coronary-related events quickly, and have greater self-esteem, less depression and lower stress levels than those who don’t. In our book, Make It Zero: The Movement to Safeguard Every Child, out January 5, 2016, we highlight inspiring stories of real lifechange and show you how to get involved in meaningful ways. Here are some ways you can jump in to be the change and serve your community in 2016.
Be the Change You Want to See This Year SIMPLE TIPS FOR INSPIRING REAL LIFE CHANGE IN 2016 Mary Frances Bowley and Jennifer Bradley Franklin are the author's of Make it Zero: A Movement To Safeguard Every Child.
FEED ONE.
Did you know Americans spend $61 billion on pet food annually, as compared to the $50 billion our country spends to feed hungry people every year? To become involved with reducing hunger, it’s important that you learn all you can. TIP: There are tons of resources online that
can easily help you find ways to help. • Check out the Gift Catalog for Children’s Hunger Fund: Catalog.ChildrensHungerFund.org • Become informed about hunger. Toolkits are available on Feeding America’s website: FeedingAmerica.org • Volunteer at the local food bank. • The No Kid Hungry Campaign outlines eleven things you can do. Visit NoKidHungry.com for specific tips. BUILD EMPATHY.
Sometimes we aren’t even aware of the daily pain people may be experiencing one street over. Whether it means becoming a mentor through an existing organization, fostering a child or creating a community of support for a child or family, the act of caring will impress the recipient of his/her worth and has the potential to change the trajectory of that life. 36
Vinings Lifestyle | January 2016
ARTICLE MARY FRANCES BOWLEY & JENNIFER BRADLEY FRANKLIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED TIP: Have you personally benefited from a mentor in a personal or
work situation? Ask yourself what skills are most valuable to me? Can I teach someone else how to leverage his or her gifts to gain success? JOIN FORCES.
The thought of changing the world for someone can be dauntmore. Don’t feel as if the weight of the whole world rests only on your shoulders. There’s so much power in the commitment of one. Your simple, single act combined with hundreds of other simple acts can create true change for a community, gaining momentum to create a movement to safeguard every child. TIP: What’s the change you wish to see in the world? Find a local orga-
nization that aligns with your compassion and see what small options might be available for you. Hands On Atlanta is a perfect local resource to connect with organizations who need volunteers. Once we become aware of problems, most of us want to create change, especially when it comes to children. Realizing that even if one child is at risk, all children and our communities are affected. If we band together and commit to embrace these basic tips, change will occur. You can help make it zero! Learn more actionable items to start your year off on the right foot! Trend Setter
Southern-Styled W
Outerwear
inter in Atlanta is always questionable. However, with the exception of a few winter storms, the weather still allows you
to be fierce with fashion. Who said being bundled up has to mean a puffy coat and knit hat? Fashion is a representation of who you are and should reflect your personality no matter the season. There are always trends that come and go, but stylish outerwear is a constant. A fabulous coat can be on trend for two to three years, or more! For winter 2016, the design trends are all about the details. Think about updating your current outerwear wardrobe with simple changes to reenergize your look. If you have a well-tailored jacket, switch up the buttons. Wrap a new belt around a vintage dress coat. Tie a scarf into a new shape and add it as an embellish-
ment more than something to keep you warm. Even pinning a colorful broach to a basic overcoat can spice things up. The details really do make all the difference. J'Amy Tarr (JamyTarr.com) is a brand that is all about the details and creates a winter wow effect with her minimalist outerwear. Her fit, tailoring, and luxurious fabrics evoke modern elegance and glamour. The Fall/Winter 2015-2016 collection is described as woodland wildflowers meet military precision. Check out these three trends epitomized by this luxury designer.
BLANKET CAMEL COAT ▷▷
This coat made from a mid-weight brushed Japanese wool. It's both comfortable and chic. The tie-fastening belt easily makes this coat figure-flattering and versatile. It comes in cream and navy, which slightly fades to darker towards the bottom. This adds an element that allows your eyes to follow the coat from top to bottom. All you need to add are black leather gloves and a simple hat to complete the look. Retail price: $688.
38

THE CAPE ◁◁
Another elegant option for an Atlanta winter is the cape. The J'Amy Tarr cape is made from soft-brushed wool. It features a high collar with lambskin details and a silver metal buckle with a magnetic silver snap closure. This is the pièce de résistance of a fantastic outfit. A great legging or slim-fit pants with flats or knee-high boots would work well with this cape. It comes in multiple colors including black, navy, lightstone grey and forest green. Retail price: $538.
FUNNEL-NECKED JACKET ▽▽
This versatile jacket can be worn four ways (closed, half-zipped, one side zipped, and open) to create several unique looks. It comes in navy and black and is made from brushed wool. It features leather-lined welt pockets and an asymmetrical front zipper. Retail price: $598.
Don't want to pay these premium price tags? Look for similar trends at local boutiques such as Sandpiper, Hemline, and Francesca's Collections. These outerwear trends allow you to be both cozy and chic. So don’t allow the cold to dictate your fashion this winter. Make a resolution to be fabulous in every season!

CITY DOGS, LEXI AND ZOE, HAVE LEARNED TO ADAPT TO SMRYNA LIFE
ARTICLE MARIA R. SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
L
exi and Zoe started off their lives as city dogs but have quickly adjusted to life in the suburbs over the last three years. Lexi, a Brittany Spanial and Zoe, a Golden Retriever are the much loved pets of Brad and Michelle Bielen, owners of Uptown Pups in Vinings. The family loves living in the Vinings area and considers it a great place for pets. Lexi and Zoe have spent many days "working" alongside Brad and Michelle at Uptown Pups, greeting everyone who came into the store. They were also adept at making animals comfortable before being groomed, showing off all the great toys and equipment, and giving their opinion on all the many foods Uptown Pups carries for animals (dry kibble, canned, or raw). Lately, Lexi and Zoe have "retired" though they still get all the treats and toys they're used to getting. They miss their in-town favorite place, Piedmont Park, but the parks in Cobb County have been great. Burger Park in Smyrna is the family's new favorite. They also love going to East Palisades to play in the river and go on hikes. Lexi and Zoe may miss all the ear scratches they would get walking through the city, but they have made lots of dog friends in Smyrna and can't wait to meet more. If you would like to have your story told and shared here. Send your story and high resolution photos of you and your special pups to contests@uptownpupsonline.com. 42

Top Ten Resolutions Even I Can Keep WORDS ANNE POTTER ROSS
A
s we all contemplate the joys of January and the requisite making of resolutions (and the systematic breaking thereof...), I thought it poignant and pertinent to make some resolutions to which I know I can adhere. Really, who likes to start off a brand new year with the best of intentions only to see them slide down the slippery slope? Not me! That's why this list, thanks to Mr. Letterman, is manageable and meant to make you smile. Stay out of the gym during the month of January. There will be 1,003 people there who think they can go nine miles per hour on the treadmill because they saw some yahoo on Biggest Loser do it, and they're sure it's not that hard. Get off before you hurt yourself. 9. Refuse to do any more stupid people tricks. I entered some ridiculous 50,000-words-in-a-month novel writing contest in November. First of all, I don't have 50,000 words I can put in an understandable sequence in a month. Second of all, don't you people have lives? Moby Dick is already taken. 8. Do not buy one more appealing paperback book until I have finished one of the seven appealing paperbacks on my bedside table. 10.

I don't care if it's got Oprah, Michelle Obama, Ellen DeGeneres, Mackenzie Phillips, and Snoopy all on the cover, I'm not buying. 7. I am not going to pay more to check my underwear on a flight than I pay to check my whole person. Do you hear me? I'll take a cab to Mazatlan, I swear. 6. Insist that wait staff at restaurants learn the soup of the day before they approach my table. True story... recent restaurant outing; asked the waitress what the soup was; she replied, "Umm, something with chicken in it, I can't remember the name." Oh, that narrows it down. 5. Put my Christmas cactus in the closet so it blooms on Christmas instead of November 19th. Oh, for the love of penguins, does this mean Al Gore was right? 4. Use the word "Shankapotomus" more. Seriously, try it. "Catapotomus, Dorkapotomus, Freakapotomus," isn't that fun? 3. Watch more prime-time television. Really. I'm the only one I know who can't keep up at a cocktail party because I have no idea why Madmen aren't sitting on the laps of Desperate Housewives. 2. Figure out why they put Braille lettering on the ATMs in the drive-up lane. 1. Go to the gym in February.
