Q: SHOULD I VACCINATE MY CHILD?

A: YES. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends vaccines to prevent severe and possibly deadly illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control provides a vaccination schedule for children, which the AAP and most board-certified pediatricians endorse. Vaccines have become more frequently discussed for so many families. Vaccines serve as a method of minimizing some of the worst illnesses that have been seen over the past couple of centuries. Fortunately, many parents of todays’ young children have never seen the horrible effects or the child deaths resulting from the illnesses that vaccines protect against. The truth that isn’t being discussed often enough is the reason parents haven’t experienced these illnesses with

their children. Vaccines have either greatly reduced the occurrence or eradicated, in some instances, many different illnesses across the country. Unfortunately, due to many families choosing to not vaccinate, some of these illnesses, which were not being seen in children, have re-emerged. It is always difficult making decisions as to what will be best for our children as medicine continues to have so many advances. However, I encourage my parents to always weigh the risks and benefits. When the benefits outweigh the risks of any medical recommendation, then it should be highly considered. I encourage parents to always discuss any concerns with the pediatrician so that he/she can assist them in making the best, wellinformed decision for their children.

No place like home.

t's a cliche for a reason: there really is no place like home. The home my family and I live in now has seen first steps, happy reunions with friends and family, and many loud, joyous parties. It has survived the Terrible Twos times four, some home improvement projects that didn't quite improve anything, as well as the time someone overflowed the bathtub. (Not good!) Our home is filled with too much stuff and some may say too many people, but it works for us...for now any way! This month at Vinings Lifestyle, we are focusing on ways to make our abodes a little less humble. He’s been in Atlanta for the past 10 years, working with Fifth Group Restaurants before joining Common Quarter in 2013. Common Quarter specializes in coastal Southern cuisine and offers guests a warm and inviting atmosphere. Sean, a product of Griffin Middle School and the International Academy of Smyrna charter school, is a great example of Smyrna's public education system. Sean is the epitome of being well-rounded. He plays soccer with Smyrna Soccer Club and also enjoys tennis, swimming, and go-kart racing. He has been active in Jr. Beta Club and has taken part in numerous volunteer activities in the Smyrna area. He has also participated in both orchestra and chorus, earning honors for both endeavors. Over the years he has been involved with Beta Club, Model UN, and the Quiz Bowl team. Academically, Sean shines as well. From the Math Bowl to the National Geographic Bee to achieving all A's for his entire middle school tenure, Sean certainly holds his own in the classroom. Sean is studious and ambitious, and has been recognized as a leader by his peers. He has a passion for service and international travel and looks forward to putting those two things together on a future service trip to China with his AP Human Geography teacher Mr. Lynch and fellow IB students at Campbell High School. Sean is adjusting well to the rigors of the International Baccalaureate program at Campbell and hopes to study engineering where ever his post-secondary plans take him. When selecting paint, Taylor says “you want it to be cohesive with the rest of the house. Don't make a color departure that doesn't blend.” Think about the house as a whole. Is it mostly warm tones or cool tones? Try to stick with one or the other. UNCOVER THE TREND

Taylor suggests collecting images of favorite styles in a Houzz or Pinterest board. Look for trends to emerge. Is there an overall rustic feel or more of a modern edge? Are flamingos making a frequent appearance? Perhaps that doesn’t mean a flamingo theme is materializing; maybe it simply means bright coral should be the room’s dominant accent color and playful should be the mood. Idea boards can narrow down style, palette, and mood for a room, which will make collecting items easier and more enjoyable. DON’T OVER-DECORATE

If a child’s room is fully decorated and planned out from birth, there isn’t any room left for Mason jars filled with seashells and snapshots of smash cakes. Leave space for life to happen, collections to unfold, creations to be made, and interests to develop. THINK HOME

Home Renovation THE EXPENSIVE WAY TO STRENGTHEN YOUR MARRIAGE

s a well-to-do bachelor in the late 1800's, George Vanderbilt built a summer get-away in the western North Carolina town of Asheville, which he named the ‘Biltmore Estate.’ The 250-room home sprawls out over four acres. It has 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces along with a swimming pool, gym and bowling alley. He referred to it as his “little mountain escape.” History doesn't record Vanderbilt’s frustrated musings about the construction - perhaps because they were not fit to print. To this day, Biltmore Estate remains the largest private home in America and its impeccable construction stands out as one of the best examples of the Gilded Age. Inspired by a visit to Biltmore Estate, my wife and I decided to renovate our Southern colonial antebellum-styled home in a manner befitting the beautiful and historic Vinings community in which we live. It sounded so romantic when we embarked on the journey together. By the time we finished, we had a new concept of what constitutes romance. We lived at home throughout the renovation process despite the fact our house was reduced to a skeleton of studs. For a year

we managed to survive without a kitchen, making meals exclusively with a hot plate, toaster oven or microwave as we moved from room to room like fugitives on the lam. I requested three "luxuries" during the renovation: (1) internet service; (2) a working sink; and, (3) a couple of toilets, (not necessarily in that order). In hindsight, I should have been a touch more specific because our beloved contractor, “Builder Bob,” had a mischievous sense of humor. Arriving home one evening, we found “his and hers” toilets sitting side by side among the great room studs. There was also a note indicating a temporary “sink” was installed downstairs. It was disguised as a potty and required a ladle to use. Internet service required six months of arguing with the cable company. Their solution involved trenching across our neighbor’s lawn. (We opted for something else of course.) Despite the challenges, thanks to patient neighbors and the talented, hard-working folks who helped us, we renovated our home and strengthened our marriage too. Home indeed is where the heart is. And though it may not be Biltmore Estate, we love our own little mountain escape right here in Vinings.
