I love November. I

have always loved November. Besides being my birthday month, it is the season of change in the South. Flip flops and shorts are put away for good (or at least until the next south Florida beach vacation) and boots, skinny jeans, and wool sweaters again dominate my closet. As the seasons change, we thought it would be appropriate to spend time looking at the changing face of our community, too.

Vinings is more than just the square mile area off Paces Ferry, and in this issue we meet six people who represent the new demographics and geography of the larger region of what has come to be known (even unofficially) as Vinings. We also share some delicious (and easy) caramel corn recipes, take you on a tour of Big Canoe, and introduce you to the mom behind McCray's Tavern, Rachel McCray. Also be sure to read about my newest obsession: Blown Away App for on-demand in-home hair and make-up. It's genius! November means birthday cake from Piece of Cake!

As November is the season of thanks, I'd be remiss to not shout out my steady-asthey-come husband and four (usually) sweet children. I'm blessed beyond measure. I'm also blessed this year to share this season with you!

Around Town VININGS GIRLS JOINS ALL-WOMAN FLIGHT TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL GIRLS DAY IN AVIATION On Saturday, September 26, Delta’s first female pilot and retired Captain Joy Walker took to the skies once again to mark another “first” in the airline’s history book: The first National Girls in Aviation Day. Captain Walker flew, along with more than 130 girls, from Minneapolis to a flight museum in Seattle. From charter planning to catering, meteorology to dispatching, every detail of the flight is being supported by women aviation professionals. The girls spent the day with Walker and other Delta employees soaking in their knowledge and educating themselves about career opportunities in aviation in roles such as pilot, airport customer service agent, maintenance professional, airline engineer, and flight attendant. They were also able to spend time learning from industry professionals at Boeing and NASA over lunch at the Seattle's Museum of Aviation. The girls even met some female astronauts. One of the lucky girls on this trip was 8-year-old Sofie Canales who is in 3rd grade at Nickajack Elementary School in Smyrna. Though younger than most of the other girls, Sofie was able to go on the flight thanks to her mom, Aubry Canales, who helped to photograph the momentous occasion. "I loved having Sofie with me on this experience," explains Aubry. "I think at first she didn't understand the significance; she couldn't grasp that women haven't always been treated equally. But then she did, and then she understood that she can (and will) do anything she wants to do, as we have always taught her. If she wants to fly to Mars, she can if she puts her mind to it. It was amazing to meet so many smart women that have achieved so much in male dominated fields."

LOCAL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN ROBOTICS COMPETITION The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and the U.S. Navy hosted 300 metro-Atlanta middle school students for the GTRI-Navy STEM Summit and SeaPerch Competition. SeaPerch is a robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Students from 10 area middle schools, including Campbell Middle 12

School, were invited to participate in the STEM-related event. These students have been engaged in the SeaPerch process and have followed the steps to completely assemble a ROV. Four 7th graders competed at Georgia Tech including Kunal Pol, Courtney Waybright, Kedar Johnson, and Sophia Sobrino, lead by Science teacher Ann Dubick. Campbell Middle School's SeaPerch Team is the only Cobb school to compete and they won 1st place in the robot competition and 3rd place in the poster and presentation. CMS students will go back to GA Tech to participate in a discussion panel at the CTAE state-wide conference.

PEBBLEBROOK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WINS $10,000 PRIZE FOR MUSICAL TALENT Pebblebrook High School performing arts program has created another winner. Ryan Wolpert, 16, of Mableton, won the $10,000 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award for his singing and musical talent. Ryan's determination, commitment and dedication to his music career throughout his life has been awe-inspiring to many around him. Ryan plans to use the winnings for voice lessons and to pay for a summer musical program next summer. The Cobb County Center for Excellence in Performing Arts program at Pebblebrook High School has been a life-changing experience for Ryan. Not only has he developed into a mature music professional capable of winning this prestigious award, but also as his teachers and mother can attest to, he has developed into a man of good character as well. Ryan has benefited from a staff who are comprised of devoted and passionate performing arts educator professionals. They challenge their students to strive to be the best that they can be every day and Ryan has epitomized that idea. In addition to being a musical standout, Ryan has also embraced Pebblebrook High School other extra-curricular activities, including becoming a member of the National Honor Society and playing on the Varsity Tennis Team.

aramel is one of my favorite fall flavors. I love it mixed in hot cider or dripping down the sides of a ripe apple, and just a plain square of it can brighten up any day. One of my favorite flavor combinations though is when popcorn meets caramel. This salty, sweet relationship is enough to make anyone fall in love.Â The Popcorn Board relishes in my love for caramel popcorn and has provided three recipes featuring this matchmade-in-heaven combination that are as easy as they are delicious! Which one will you make this month?

Easy Oven Caramel Corn

EASY OVEN CARAMEL CORN Yield: 5 quarts Ingredients • 5 quarts popped popcorn • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine • 2 cups brown sugar, packed firmly • 1/2 cup light corn syrup • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Optional nuts - choose one: • 1 cup salted peanuts • 1 cup whole almonds • 1 cup pecan halves Directions • Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Line a large, rimmed baking pan (17x 12-inch) with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray. • Spray a large mixing bowl (not plastic) lightly with cooking spray and place popcorn inside. • Spread optional nuts over popcorn, if desired. • In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and salt. • Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. • Lower heat and boil 5 minutes, stirring frequently. • Quickly stir in vanilla and baking soda. • Quickly pour hot mixture over popcorn; stir well to coat. • Spread evenly into prepared pan and bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. • Cool completely in pan; store in an airtight container. CARAMEL CORN CRUNCH Yield: 3 quarts Ingredients • 1/2 cup butter • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed • 3 quarts popped popcorn Directions • Cream butter; add brown sugar and whip until fluffy. In a large baking pan, combine popcorn. • Mix in creamed mixture. • Bake in 350-degree oven for about 8 minutes or until crisp. • Serve warm if desired. POPCORN CARAMEL APPLES Yield: 4 apples Ingredients • 1 quart freshly popped popcorn • 1 (9.5 oz) package caramels, unwrapped (35 caramels) • 1/4 cup light cream or “half and half’ • 4 lollipop sticks (or wooden candy apple sticks) • 4 apples • 1/2 cup chocolate chips • Sugar sprinkles • Decorative ribbon, optional Directions • Place popcorn in a large bowl; set aside. Place a sheet of waxed paper on work surface. • Heat caramels and cream in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir frequently until caramels are melted and cream is blended into caramels. Push a stick into an apple center and dip into caramel. Spoon caramel over apple to coat. • Place caramel-coated apple into bowl of popcorn and press popcorn onto caramel to cover. Place apple on waxed paper to set; repeat with remaining apples. • Place chocolate chips in a small, resealable plastic bag. Microwave 10 seconds and press chips to aid melting. Repeat, heating at 10-second intervals, until chips are completely melted. Cut a small corner off bag and squeeze chocolate onto each apple allowing chocolate to drip down sides. Sprinkle with sugar sprinkles. • Tie a bow to each apple stick, if desired. To serve, cut apple into slices.

inings, Georgia, is more than the few square miles off Paces Ferry. It's bigger than the locally-dubbed "true Vinings" though that area could certainly be seen as the heart of the region. Unofficially, Vinings now extends much farther, including parts of Smyrna, Mableton and Atlanta. A Vinings zip code was even recently established that extends from the new Braves stadium on Cobb Parkway all the way to South Cobb Drive. While the geography of the area is changing, the demographics are changing as well. Vinings was once a sleepy suburb, but is now a dynamic, growing community. Vinings includes families flocking to the resurgence of public schools, young professionals raving over the foodie scene, business owners nabbing engaged customers, and empty nesters who find no need to leave. To celebrate the new face of Vinings, we found six area residents who represent it well. Read on to learn why they have chosen to live in Vinings.

DAVID AND BARBIE COOPER, CHURCH PASTORS/CHRIST CRUSADERS

FRED BLANKENSHIP, TELEVISION ANCHOR/FAMILY MAN

You might have spied Fred Blankenship and his family at Taylor-Brawner park or strolling through Vinings Jubilee, But you probably know him best for bringing you the news you need to know since 2007 on WSB-TV's Channel 2 Action News, what he refers to as the best job in the country. Fred and his stunning wife Paige have been married 10 years and have 3 children: Freddy (8), Layla (5) and Jaden (2). They have lived in the area for the last eight years. Fred is a Los Angeles native but feels at home in Vinings. He loves the abundance of young families, its convenience to everything in Atlanta, and he swears it is the new hot spot to live. "Vinings is a place where communities are growing at a record pace. The school system is working hard to keep up with the standard in East Cobb.” Fred continues, “I'm going to let you in on a little secret. My area is the new hot spot. Just remember, you heard it here first."

Dr. David Cooper has been the senior pastor of the 11,000-member Mount Paran Church of God (MountParan.org) for the last 18 years (and on staff there for 24 years). His wife of 30 years, Barbie, is the Woman's Life pastor. Together they minister to one of the largest churches in Atlanta and reach people across the world through a strong online ministry. David and Barbie have loved living in Smyrna through the years, raising two children here. Though both children have grown and the Coopers are now grandparents, they relish staying in the area. When asked what keeps him here, Dr. Cooper answered with his characteristic faith-based boldness. “I am concerned for the spiritual welfare of our people. I want to help has many people as I can to have a true relationship with God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and to live a life of purpose that God has for them.” Pastor Cooper can often be spotted inconspicuously working on a sermon at Starbucks or enjoying the great outdoors with his longhaired dachshund, Mikey. The Coopers have found Vinings a good place to serve God’s purpose.

DEVIN TAYLOR-CLARK, INTERIOR DESIGNER/RESIDENT COOL GIRL

Devin is the epitome of cool. People are drawn to her effervescent personality and her easy, West Coast transitional style. In the design industry for the last 13 years, Devin has made a name for herself in Atlanta since moving here seven years ago and starting Devin Taylor Interior Design (DevinTaylorInteriorDesign.com). She has designed projects for NBA players Blake Griffin, Kemba Walker and Cole Aldrich, and is currently working on a complete custom-build for Jeff Adrien. In addition to juggling design projects in multiple states, Devin also juggles family responsibilities to her 6-year-old son, 2-yearold daughter and well-traveled husband Lorne Clark. She has created a community of friends-who-feel-like-family and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Whether it's an impromptu cocktail party on the verandah of her newly-restored Smyrna home, Sunday brunch around her massive marble kitchen island, or date night at the walkable Muss & Turner's, Devin shows Vinings can be for hipsters, too. "The Smyrna area is a great metropolitan suburb with so much to offer. We've met people from all over the world here. This community is a place where neighbors wave as you walk by…and then invite you over for cocktails,” says Devin.

DR. JAHA HOWARD, PEDIATRIC DENTIST/EDUCATION VISIONARY

Dr. Jaha Howard has become a celebrity around town. Some people know him from his fast-growing dental practice, A+ Pediatric Dentistry, but others recognize him as the face of Wave of Excellence, the Facebook group he started to support Smyrna-area public schools. With nearly 1,800 members of Wave of Excellence, Dr. Howard has helped to reenergize a population that once thought pricey private schools were their only "good" option. “I want people to know our schools have transitioned from our "Achilles' heel" into one of our stronger assets,” says Dr. Howard. “I've been so impressed with our teachers and principals. Our kids are in very good hands. “ Dr. Howard believes in creating a sense of community within his office that extends beyond his Smyrna doors, living his office's motto, “Excellence and Compassion” everyday. Dr. Howard is married to his chic, formidable wife, Vanessa, and they have three children ages 5 to 1. The Howard family plans to take advantage of all the opportunities in Vinings for decades to come.

Gillian has lived in Vinings for 10 years but spent countless hours here since she was a child helping her mother sell antiques in the Old Pavilion. After an exciting career as a flight attendant for Delta, Gillian launched her second act in Vinings and fell in love with the Mayberry-like quality of Vinings Village. She enjoys having a small-town life in the middle of the big city. As part of both the "old" and "new" Vinings, Gillian is excited about the growing energy and the permeating sense of community. "We are a community full of volunteers who work together to make our village great...We are loyal to the businesses, shops and restaurants in the area. It’s a very unique community with a lot of community comradery. It’s just a great place to live!"

Known for his amazing turnaround of the once-troubled Barnsley Gardens Resort, the 48-year-old Euan has set his sights on Vinings. "I dearly love Vinings given its village feel and history. It has such great energy. We tried to capture that in our Hotel Indigo project." As the co-founder and managing partner of Valor Hospitality Partners, a hotel management, acquisition and development company, Euan has an enviable listing of 28 hotels around the world, including seven in the US. This global empire, which Euan began in 2012, is run out of offices in the heart of Vinings. Euan’s pet project, the completely renovated Hotel Indigo, opened recently off of Paces Ferry. He was very hands-on for this renovation, hoping to create a chic social space for guests and locals alike. His goal is a sophisticated, sexy vibe. My guess? He’ll be spot on. And Vinings residents and visitors will not be disappointed.

ou may not know Rachel McCray. But you should. She is the driving presence behind McCray's Tavern in Smyrna and the Jill-of-all-trades who keeps all the plates spinning and balls in the air. When asked about her official role at McCray's, Rachel had to think for awhile. She finally said, "I'm the momager. I just take care of things." And what a good momager she is! She and her husband, Scott, are raising Scottie (11), who has epilepsy and a mild intellectual disability and Kaci (9). Rachel also helps Scott run the bevy of restaurants he's opened in the Atlanta-metro area in recent years including McCray's West Village Tavern, McCray's Tavern on the Square, The Mill Kitchen and Bar, Lava Lounge, Cosmopolitan, and their newest addition, Hook Line & Schooner, which opened earlier this year. If that weren't enough, Rachel is also a member of the Atlanta Board of Realtors and has been a real estate advisor with Engel & Völkers for the last year. 30

Rachel loves working out and being outdoors, but it is when she she interacts with people where she really shines. Making Smyrna her home since 2003, she has had a lot of opportunities to create long-standing friendships within her work, restaurant and home communities. She calls on those friendships to help support the charitable organizations she works on behalf of each year, including the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia. She runs the Magnolia Race each year to raise money for epilepsy research with her team, Sprinting for Seizures. Rachel also hosts a huge benefit at McCray's Tavern each year to further help support the foundation. This past August crowds packed McCray's for the Bourbon and Beer Tasting Epilepsy Fundraiser! Rachel is a tiny woman in size, but after meeting her even for a few minutes, it is easy to tell she is formidable in spirit! There is no doubt that she is the force behind much of the success of the restaurants she and her husband have opened!

here is a lot you won’t find here -- the low hum of lawnmowers; the revving snarl of motorcycles; annoying horn honks from impatient drivers. Passing through the check-in gate, a drive across the covered bridge means you enter a world devoid of sound you didn’t realize existed. At first it seems an uncomfortable quiet that causes even suburban dwellers a moment of uneasy confusion. But then an epiphany happens: what you are experiencing is peace. If you're not originally from the Atlanta area, it’s likely that you haven’t heard of Big Canoe, a hidden gem of relaxation strategically located where the mountains meet the metro, one hour north of Atlanta. With roughly 30 percent of the property acreage at Big Canoe reserved as green space, it’s not surprising that outdoor activities abound here. Over 20 miles of trails allow you to leisurely saunter through a meadow looking for deer, or follow the fern-carpeted forest to follow a natural stream flowing to meet the lake. Trails ranging from easy to strenuous afford views of local fauna and give

quiet-goers an opportunity to spot native wildlife such as bear, deer, geese and other North Georgia indigenous animals. Terrain options range from paved to rocky. Even Fido can have a romp in one of two off-leash dog parks. Don’t forget your wheels! Paved and rugged trails are available for biking. A one-of-a-kind, 1.7-mile Jeep trail allows 4-wheel drive vehicles to drive through creeks, past waterfalls, and along rocky terrain. Three lakes provide ample opportunity for boating and other watersports. One thousand pounds of trout are stocked in the lake most months of the year; and bass, crappie and bream can be caught as well. Pontoon boats, canoes and paddle boards are all available for rental through the marina. During the summer, Lake Disharoon is water play central. Floating inflatable slides and an obstacles course are located

directly out from the 300-yard sand beachfront of the Big Canoe Swim Club. Paddle boats, kayaks, paddle boards and a 200foot rock slide are just a few of the amenities located at the club. Now that it is fall though, color explodes at Big Canoe in a visual treat. The foliage shines with its red, orange, and gold spectacle that meets its mirror reflection upon the many lakes and ponds across the community. Autumnal splendor at Big Canoe can rival anything the North puts forth. A 27-hole championship golf course winds around lakes and is flanked by the rising mountains. Tennis courts, pickleball, fitness center, bocce ball courts, playgrounds, a kiddie pool, basketball court, soccer field and even baseball field are all located within the gated community. Big Canoe is also close to popular attractions such as Gibbs Gardens and Amicalola Falls. CONTINUED >

8 Things You Probably Didn't Know ABOUT THANKSGIVING WORDS KARI APTED

hanksgiving hasn’t always conjured up images of a picture-perfect family gathered around the table, joyously partaking of turkey and pumpkin pie. The history and celebration of our American Thanksgiving is fraught with amusing traditions and colorful characters. Here are eight things you might not know about everyone’s favorite November holiday: 1. The first Thanksgiving was long! The first celebration at Plymouth lasted three full days. Since the Calorie Control Council estimates we consume between 3,000 and 4.500 calories on this holiday, waistlines everywhere pause in gratitude that it’s now just a one-day feast. (Although leftovers seem to appear forever and ever, amen.) 2. Politicians thought a day for thanksgiving was ridiculous. Think today’s politicians are dark, ungrateful souls? During the 1800s, newspaper editor Sarah Hale wrote letters to five different presidents over three decades, trying to convince them to declare a national day of thanksgiving. Thomas Jefferson actually called it “the most ridiculous idea ever.” Undaunted, she continued until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln finally proclaimed the holiday as a way of uniting America after the Civil War. 3. Thanksgiving Day is the most-traveled day of the year. Though the media makes it seem like the Wednesday before Turkey Day is the busiest day, 91 percent of Thanksgiving trips are made by car and more of them happen on Thanksgiving Day. Multiple hours trapped together in the car might explain why so many families show up to dinner already looking for a fight. 4. Traditional foods aren't traditional at all. Nearly all of the foods we consider traditional for Thanksgiving aren’t foods that were eaten at the first Thanksgiving. Lobster, deer, swans, shellfish, eels, radishes, maple syrup, goat cheese and cabbage are all thought to have appeared on the original Thanksgiving table. Strangely enough, 50

An average of 46 million birds are gobbled up on Turkey Day alone. In contrast, it’s taken 20 years for Tofurkey to sell 3.5 million of its tofu-based roast substitutes. 5. Macy's first animals weren't filled with hot air. The animals at the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924 weren’t oversized balloons. They were real elephants, camels and lions provided by the Central Park Zoo, escorted through New York City by 400 costumed Macy’s employees. 6. Macy's first balloons were explosively good. In 1927, Felix the Cat appeared as Macy’s first giant balloon. The following year, Felix and the expanding cast of his balloon friends were filled with helium and set free at the end of the parade—unexpectedly exploding right after. 7. It's not the turkey's fault! Overstuffed people have long blamed turkey as the cause of the legendary after-dinner food coma. Post-feast exhaustion actually results from stuffing down a week’s worth of carbohydrates in one sitting, enhanced by chugging that extra glass of wine to drown out Aunt Martha’s incessant rambling. Turkey Day cooks also know that getting up at 5 a.m. to start roasting the bird only exacerbates the need for a serious afternoon nap. 8. Black Friday for plumbers? The day after Thanksgiving, isn’t just a banner day for retailers. According to Roto-Rooter, America’s largest plumbing service, it’s also the busiest day for plumbers. Apparently, all our feasting strains more than just our zippers. After all, those 736 million pounds of turkey have to end up somewhere, right?
