LIFESTYLE LETTER

From Smoking Cosmos to Waterfront Favorites: Eat, Drink & Enjoy! Welcome to one of our most delectable issues of the year. That’s because October is when Venice City Lifestyle celebrates the food and drink that make Venice such a delicious place to call home. Fortunately for us, Venice is a foodie kind of town. Our story, Pizza in Venice, says it best: There really is something for everyone. And we’ve put together a full menu of stories to prove it. In Beyond Dining: Local Restaurant Fun, we explore the entertainment, events and experiences offered at Paradise Grill, San Marco, Mirabella’s Coastal Italian and BrewBurgers Back Porch. Along with great food, guests can enjoy live music, special celebrations, game nights and plenty more. Sips Worth Seeking highlights hallmark drinks from Made in Italy, The Banyan House and Longet. Distinctive, delicious and sometimes a little dramatic, these cocktails can be destinations in themselves. Speaking of destinations, Waterfront Favorites, Year After Year visits two Venice dining landmarks with decades of staying power. The Crow’s Nest Restaurant & Marina celebrates 50 years in 2026, while Sharky’s on the Pier has been serving diners since 1987, with sister restaurant Fins at Sharky’s approaching 15 years. Time flies when you’re eating well! For those who want to bring a little seasonal fun to their own table, Venice Olive Oil Co. shares how to make its Día de los Muertos Antipasto Salad. It contains all the antipasto fixings, including salami, tomatoes, peppers, olives, cheese, and more—and there's a playful Halloween twist in the presentation. Beyond the dining table, we also have news from the Venice Institute for Performing Arts Management, which is taking over management of the Venice Community Center. The transition promises to bring upgrades, expanded services and a renewed vision for this longtime community gathering place. Food has a wonderful way of bringing people together, whether we’re lingering over dinner with friends, discovering a new favorite restaurant or sharing something delicious at home. As always, thanks for reading. Here’s to savoring every bite, sip and moment this fall. We’ll see you around town! Bon appétit! Beyond Dining: Local Restaurant Fun Paradise Grill, San Marco, Mirabella’s, and BrewBurgers Back Porch feature standout events and entertainment

More than just exceptional cuisine, these restaurants are home to spirited gatherings that spread cheer and unite the community. With musical acts, seasonal celebrations, special events, and fundraisers, there’s always something to look forward to. Patrons of Paradise Grill in Nokomis can expect a side of quality entertainment along with a fresh coastal, crowd-pleasing menu. Since opening in 2016, the restaurant has hosted live music every night—and was one of the first in the area to do so. Its impressive musical lineup has grown to include karaoke nights, singer Tracy Zito each week on Taco Tuesday, classic rock and country band 2 Doors Down every Thursday, six-piece band Soundwave the first Saturday of every month, the Michigan-based Cheese Brothers in Paradise, and Paradise Grill staple DJ Harry. Paradise Grill also celebrates seasonal events with enthusiasm. “In October, we will definitely have a Halloween party, which even the staff dresses up for and gets into,” said general manager Brenda Nava. Other fall happenings include an annual car show and Trunk or Treat event in October and Friendsgiving in November.

December coincides with Paradise Grill owner Mary Beth Hansen’s birthday, traditionally celebrated with a Holiday Toy Drive. “The Toy Drive is a special event for us at Paradise Grill,” said Nava, “we usually have thousands of dollars’ worth of gifts for local children and teens donated.” To keep track of upcoming events, Nava suggests visiting the restaurant’s website and Facebook page. “Be sure to keep an eye out … because you never know what our team has come up with!” she said. Nava noted that each event is designed to feel warm and welcoming to newcomers. “We have a large number of ‘regulars’ for a reason,” she said, “it’s because we want our guests to feel recognized and seen as soon as you walk in the door. We greet by name; we get

At Paradise Grill, you aren’t just a paying customer, you’re a new friend.” San Marco and Mirabella’s Coastal Italian, both owned by Jeffrey and Kathleen Ziccardi, serve up classic, traditionally prepared Italian food and select wines and cocktails along with special shows, elegant private events, live music, and activities. While San Marco’s seating area is furnished with a stage and blackout curtains, Mirabella’s contains a 5,000 square foot ballroom for 250 people.

“We host everything from full-blown weddings to baby showers and small birthday parties,” said Jeffrey Ziccardi of Mirabella’s. He noted that guests enjoy the one-on-one attention and comfortable atmosphere of the venue. “We make sure the event goes great from start to finish,” he said, “we make it memorable.” San Marco and Mirabella’s also treat customers to live music by local performers such as solo guitarist Chuck Lang and Sinatra and Dean Martin cover artist Frank Gomes. Ziccardi said that many appreciate the talent and peaceful volume of the performers, who are experts in subtly enhancing the dining experience. As an added perk, San Marco now offers stylish, one-of-a-kind souvenirs for jewelry enthusiasts: bar customers are given a free bracelet and charm on their first visit, and a new charm each visit thereafter. “Folks come in, have a glass of wine or a cocktail, have a conversation, and get a charm,” said Ziccardi. This fall, Mirabella’s is set to host The Kollections Band on October 9, October 31, and November 27; a Wine or Martini Glass Painting Party on October 22; and a Witch’s Broom Decorating CONTINUED >

Upon making the decision to join the fun and attend a Mirabella’s special event, Ziccardi said to “make a reservation, because they fill up fast!” Venice’s BrewBurgers Back Porch is known for its popular bar and deliciously innovative burgers and handhelds. Its weekly entertainment offerings and highly anticipated annual events are also a big draw. “There’s always something going on at Back Porch,” said owner Michael Bacon. Bacon described Monday’s Music Bingo as “great fun,” and Tuesday’s Trivia Night, hosted by Last Resort Trivia, as the biggest night of the week. “Sometimes there’s 160 people,” he said. Music Bingo and Trivia Night winners receive house gift cards along with a lively evening of friendly competition. Back Porch hosts a variety of special events throughout the year to support the community. “Every month we sponsor a different charity,” explained Bacon. October 8, is the Child Protection Center’s Celebrity Bartender Challenge. Last year, eight local celebrities—including VCL’s own Charmaine Tincher—paired up in teams of two and competed to create the best specialty drink. The team with the most tips at the end of the night had their names added to the Shaker Cup and, as Bacon put it with a smile, “bragging rights.” After this year’s challenge, Bacon plans to celebrate the event’s five-year anniversary with a championship round. “Whoever wins this year will compete against [winners from] the first three years.” Bacon described Back Porch’s events as charity-based festivities that allow attendees to have a good time, give back to the community, and make a difference. He encourages people to “donate money to charity, open your heart, open your checkbook, show up and have some fun!”

Three popular Venice restaurants offer outstanding cocktails that are sure to amaze. When it comes to the ultimate espresso martini, Made in Italy on Venice Ave. offers a sophisticated, yet comforting take. This crowd favorite features fresh-brewed espresso, 360 Vodka and 360 Madagascar Vanilla Flavored Vodka, Borghetti espresso liqueur, a splash of simple syrup, and a topping of three coffee beans. “People constantly ask for the recipe, which we don’t keep a secret; they’re very simple ingredients,” said manager Sergio Martinez, “but we make sure that we use the best quality ingredients and execute it properly every time.” The refinement of the drink sets it apart, allowing the coffee and vodka to mingle with ease. Martinez noted that the shaken fresh espresso creates a light foam on the top of the drink, contributing to an overall subtle sweetness without an overwhelming number of additives. “This is as pure as it can be,” he said. “It’s the kind of drink you want to wind down to, it’s perfect for people who want to skip dessert,” he explained. Whether one is capping off a special occasion or simply a satisfying, authentic Italian meal, Made in Italy’s espresso martini delivers on flavor.

everyone watches it … and you get the touch because you can touch the bubble. Then, when you release it, it actually gives you an aroma, too.” Jones described the drink’s flavor as cool, refreshing, citrusy, and not overly sweet. The Banyan Cosmo’s light, fresh flavors pair well with anything on the menu making it a fitting choice for any occasion. “Whether it’s a celebration or you’re looking for something fun, it really checks all the boxes,” said Jones.

BANYAN COSMO Wellen Park’s Banyan House features a variety of refreshing, tropical cocktails; As for the most eye-catching drink, however, the Banyan Cosmo is a clear winner. Made with Banyan Reserve Vodka, Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice—and topped with an impressive raspberry-flavored gelatin smoke bubble created with a Flavor Blaster—it can’t help but draw attention to itself. General manager Stacy Jones described the drink as “Instagram worthy.” “It’s a showstopper, because if anybody has one in the dining room, everybody looks around to see what’s going on,” he said. Jones noted that the drink appeals to several senses: “visually, it’s pleasing because it’s a Cosmo, but it has that cool smoke bubble, so

WATER LILY MARTINI The Water Lily Martini at Venice Ave’s Longet was originally crafted by mixologist Caroline Follos for the Venice Art Center’s 2026 Artini event where the cocktail won Best Tasting Martini. In alignment with Longet’s French fare, Follos chose Claude Monet’s classic masterpiece Water Lilies as her artistic inspiration. She described the drink as both light and complex. “There’s a lot of components to this drink,” said Follos, “there are many different flavors, but it’s super well balanced.” The airy martini’s floral and citrus notes emanate from the blend of parfait amour, house-made orange tincture, fresh lemon juice, lavender simple syrup, egg whites, and vodka.

Longet’s Caroline Follos and her creation, the Water Lily Martini.

Follos suggested pairing the Water Lily Martini with light appetizers on a girls’ night out, as the drink’s bright aesthetics and frothy texture often catch the attention of the entire party—and soon everyone wants a taste. “A whole table will order them,” said Follos. “I think this one has such a unique color that whenever somebody sees it, they are always interested,” she explained. “I’d say, if you like vodka, and you like fresh, bright, complex drinks … this is the perfect drink for you to try; It’s pretty unique, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Follos.

WATER F RONT FAVOR ITE S, Y E A R A F TER Y E A R TWO VENICE DINING LANDMARKS WITH DECADES OF STAYING POWER Waterfront dining is one of the true pleasures of Venice life. Enjoying a meal with a breeze off the water and a view of the Gulf, can elevate the spirit. The Crow’s Nest Restaurant & Marina, celebrating 50 years in 2026, and Sharky’s on the Pier, serving diners since 1987, have made that experience an enduring Venice tradition.

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

Situated along the Venice Inlet and Intracoastal Waterway, The Crow’s Nest has welcomed generations of diners since 1976. Manager Danielle

Posniewski has seen plenty of that history herself. She started as a busser 16 years ago and worked her way up. “This restaurant is a part of Venice’s history,” she said. She regularly hears stories that prove the point. “I have had people tell me they used to come here with their grandparents as a kid, and now they want to bring their kids or even grandkids,” she said. That continuity extends to behind the scenes. When its original owner sold the business after 40 years, much of the staff remained and many longtime menu favorites stayed put. “We knew we were doing something right, and we kept with that,” Posniewski said. Part of The Crow’s Nest’s appeal is providing two dining experiences under one roof. Downstairs, the Tavern offers a casual gathering place for fresh fried seafood, sandwiches and its famous One Way Salad. Upstairs, Posniewski said, “is where the romance is.” The restaurant offers casual fine dining, with seafood entrees, hand-cut steaks, an extensive wine list and broad views of the Venice Inlet and Intracoastal Waterway. And with a full-service marina just outside, guests can arrive by boat as easily as by car. It all adds to The Crow’s Nest’s place in Venice: part restaurant, part gathering spot and, after 50 years, part of the city’s history.

SHARKY’S ON THE PIER & FINS AT SHARKY’S

Sharky’s on the Pier has been family-run since Mike Pachota opened it in 1987. Today, his son Justin Pachota, president and owner of Venice Pier Group, carries on the tradition.

Nearly four decades on, Justin sees second- and third-generation guests returning to a place they remember as a classic Venice beach destination. Set directly on the Gulf beside the Venice Fishing Pier, Sharky’s is casual, lively and “meant for everyone,” said Justin. Frozen drinks and cold beer, live entertainment and what he calls “elevated beach fare” fit naturally with the sand, Gulf views and come-as-you-are atmosphere. It’s also more than a place to stop for a meal. A day here might include time on the beach, fishing from the pier and lunch at Sharky’s before moving next door for dinner at Fins at Sharky’s. Opened in 2013, Fins expanded the experience with a “polished casual” alternative. Prime steaks, fresh seafood, sushi and handcrafted cocktails make it equally suited to date night or a special celebration, with expansive Gulf views keeping the waterfront front and center. In all, Sharky’s and Fins offer two different ways to enjoy one of Venice’s best-known waterfront settings. Together with The Crow’s Nest, these area treasures are long-standing local traditions, bringing generations of diners back to Venice and onto the water.

Learn about artisan oils, balsamics, and kitchen favorites for every occasion from Venice Olive Oil

Lets Make a Día de los Muertos

Ant ipasto S alad!

Antipasto salad - cheese daisy detail

Día de los Muertos Antipasto Salad

Ingredients

For the vinaigrette • 3 tablespoons 18-year-old traditional balsamic vinegar • 5 tablespoons Tuscan herb olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt For the salad • 4 cups salad spring mix • 48 slices herb-crusted salami, thinly sliced • 2 yellow bell peppers, sliced into rings • 1 pint pear tomatoes, halved • 1 English cucumber, sliced into rounds • 1 cup Delizia garlic-stuffed olives • Yellow cheese slices, cut into small flowers with a cookie cutter • 2 tablespoons Divina black olive spread

Directions

1. Make the vinaigrette: In a small jar, combine the balsamic vinegar, olive oil and sea salt. Whisk or shake until well blended. Set aside. 2. Make the salami roses: Bring the salami to room temperature. Fold the slices halfway over the rim of a drinking glass, slightly overlapping each slice. Continue layering until the rim is completely covered, gently pressing the slices together as you go. Invert the glass into your palm and gently shake the rose free. Refrigerate until ready to assemble. 3. Arrange the spring mix on a large serving platter to form a bed of greens. 4. Place the Día de los Muertos mask in the center of the platter. Cover the eye

openings with cucumber rounds topped with tomato halves and olive slices. 5. Arrange the yellow pepper rings and salami roses above the mask to create a decorative display. 6. Scatter the remaining cucumber, tomatoes and olives around the mask. 7. Place a small dollop of black olive spread in the center of each cheese flower and tuck the flowers around the mask. 8. Serve immediately with the vinaigrette on the side for guests to drizzle over their salads.

Note: Use a clean, food-safe decorative Día de los Muertos mask (find one on Amazon. com and elsewhere).

THE BACKYARD PIZZA OVEN OBSESSION CLASSIC MARGHERITA

Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, room temperature • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce • 4 to 5 ounces fresh mozzarella, torn into pieces • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved • A handful of fresh basil leaves • Olive oil • Flaky salt

Not long ago, an outdoor pizza oven in someone’s backyard was rare, and the kind of purchase that hinted at a serious devotion to entertaining. What was once a niche indulgence has become a fixture on patios and terraces across the country, and the appeal is easy to understand once you’ve stood next to one. These ovens climb past 900 degrees, hot enough to turn out a proper Neapolitan crust in under two minutes, with the same char and blistered edge you’d find at a well-regarded pizzeria. What’s driven the shift is accessibility without any real compromise on quality. The newer generation of countertop ovens, running on gas or wood pellets, has made that level of heat achievable without a masonry install or a small fortune. The result is

a dinner party that essentially hosts itself: guests gather around the oven the way they once gathered around a fire pit, the dough gets stretched and topped in full view, and the meal becomes entertainment rather than a meal quietly assembled in a kitchen. Part of the appeal of a pizza oven is how quickly it rewards experimentation. With a cook time measured in minutes rather than hours, there’s little downside to trying an unexpected topping or a pairing you wouldn’t normally think to combine. Fig and prosciutto, hot honey and pepperoni, nothing is really off limits once the oven is hot. That said, it helps to start from a solid foundation. Below are tried and true recipes that are guaranteed to be crowd pleasers no matter who’s on the guest list.

Whichever you make first, go easy on the toppings. A hot pizza oven cooks a pie in under two minutes, and a heavy pie won’t cook through in time. Keep it light and let the oven do the work.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough into a round. 2. Spread the tomato sauce over the top, leaving the edge bare. 3. Scatter the cherry tomatoes over the sauce, then add the mozzarella in a few big clusters. 4. Bake until the crust is puffed and golden with dark spots. In an outdoor oven this takes about 90 seconds. In a home oven, bake at 500 degrees on a hot pizza stone for 8 to 10 minutes. 5. Top with fresh basil, a drizzle of olive oil, and a pinch of flaky salt.

CHICKEN PESTO WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATO Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, room temperature • 1/3 cup basil pesto, plus extra for serving • 1 cup shredded mozzarella • 1 cup cooked chicken breast, diced • 1/3 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped • Fresh parsley, chopped • Salt and pepper INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough and spread the pesto over the top in place of tomato sauce. 2. Top with mozzarella, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes. 3. Bake until the cheese is melted and the crust is charred in spots. This one cooks a little faster since there’s no wet sauce, so keep an eye on it. 4. Top with parsley and serve with extra pesto on the side for dipping.

PIZZA IN VENICE There’s Something for Everyone

Whether you're devoted to the pizza you grew up with or simply love trying different styles, Venice's locally-owned pizzerias are ready to satisfy every craving. From old-world Italian favorites to hearty Chicago classics—and even pizza on a bagel—there's something for everyone. This is by no means a complete list, just a delicious sampling to get you started.

BRICK OVEN OR WOOD-FIRED PIZZA

For a true taste of Italy, stop by Made in Italy (MadeInItaly-Venice.com) on West Venice Avenue. Their wood-fired pizzas feature imported ingredients, house-made mozzarella and a thin, lightly charred crust that's crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside and packed with flavor.

CHICAGO DEEP DISH PIZZA

If you think pizza should be thick enough to require a knife and fork, Joey D's Chicago Style Eatery & Pizza (JoeyDsFl.com) on U.S. 41 Bypass N. delivers. Their famous deep-dish pizzas are

layered with cheese, sauce and generous toppings. Prefer something lighter? They also serve traditional thin crust, Sicilian and gluten-free cauliflower crust.

NEW YORK-STYLE PIZZA

Large slices, a thin crust and that signature fold make New York-style pizza a favorite for many. You'll find it at Asaro's Pizzeria Ristorante (AsarosPizzeria.com) on Laurel Road in Nokomis. The dough is made fresh daily, and the menu includes everything from classic cheese and pepperoni to specialty pies loaded with fresh ingredients.

NOT FOR PIZZA PURISTS— BUT DEFINITELY DELICIOUS

Sometimes it's fun to break the rules. BrewzaBagels (BrewzABagels.com) serves pizza bagels by the half or whole, with creative combinations like the barbecue-loaded BBA ZA or the Garden State, topped with pesto, vegetables and mozzarella. It may not be traditional pizza— but it's definitely worth a bite.

The Venice Community Center will see new upgrades and expanded event services under VIPAM's management

ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS

Venice Community Center Reimagined VIPAM plans upgrades, expanded services and a renewed vision for the historic gathering place Derek Blankenship is Executive Director of Venice Institute for Performing Arts Management

O UR TOWN | EVENT P L ANN IN G + SE RVICE S

The Venice Community Center enters a new era as the Venice Institute for Performing Arts Management (VIPAM) takes over its management. The transition follows a competitive selection process by the City of Venice and comes with an ambitious goal: build on the center's legacy while expanding its role in community life. "We are thrilled to partner with the City of Venice as we begin this new chapter for the Venice Community Center," said VIPAM Executive Director Derek Blankenship. "Our goal is to create a vibrant space that brings residents, businesses and organizations together while fostering connection, engagement and civic pride." While much of the work will happen behind the scenes, visitors will notice improvements to the building's exterior. Inside, the ballroom and stage are being modernized with new lighting, followed by enhanced audio and video capabilities, thus creating a more versatile venue for everything from weddings and galas to meetings, expos and community performances.

VIPAM also plans to make event planning easier by offering concierge-style services, connecting renters with caterers, production support and experienced event staff. Rather than simply renting a room, organizations and individuals will be able to choose as much—or as little— assistance as they need. Supporting that expanded vision, VIPAM is hiring dedicated Community Center staff while also drawing on the expertise of its Venice Performing Arts Center team. "It's also a great opportunity to utilize and grow our apprentice program," Blankenship added. Looking ahead, Blankenship hopes to build on the Venice Community Center's long-standing role as a gathering place by expanding the range of events and experiences it can offer— from high school proms and nonprofit fundraisers to neighborhood meetings and community celebrations. "We fully intend to make it an even more vibrant and valuable community asset that everyone can be proud of," he said.
