Welcome to Venice City Lifestyle!
October is a special time for us at Venice City Lifestyle as we celebrate the Food & Drink issue. With the arrival of cooler Florida weather, new appetites and cravings for seasonal flavors naturally follow.
For example, in “Autumn Fare: Seasonal Drink & Dish Recipes” you’ll find recipes from one of my go-to spots, Paradise Grill, to make at home or enjoy at the restaurant. Also check out “Savor the Best,” to learn how you can expand your olive oil expertise through tasting classes with Venice Olive Oil Co.’s in-house OO Sommelier.
As the seasons change, so can our perspectives. This year, we've explored the healthful side of food. No one is immune to unexpected health challenges—myself included! In “Food for Health,” we consulted a medical expert and a nutritionist to explore the power of nutrient-dense foods in maintaining health and combating disease, whether through the Mediterranean diet or a plant-based approach.
Both of these food plans emphasize the importance of incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet. That’s why, in “Find Your Farmers Market,” we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of local markets where you can find the fresh ingredients you need to support a healthier way of eating.
Also in this issue, I’m teaming up with Phil Adams to serve as host bartenders for the Child Protection Center’s Celebrity Bartender Challenge on October 17. Don’t miss your chance to see Phil and I (a.k.a. Venice Inspirator and Chocolate Thunder, respectively) "Shaking It Up for a Cause!" from 7-9 p.m. at Brewburger’s Back Porch. If you can’t make it but still want to donate 'tips' (all proceeds go to CPC programs), simply scan the QR code on page 17.
Last, but not least, the Sun Fiesta is a beloved community tradition organized by the Women's Sertoma Club of Venice. This three-day event (Oct. 18-20) in downtown Venice, will be a fun-filled experience that also benefits the Venice community.
This just in at press time! October 15-18 marks the 37th year that Plantation Golf & Country Club will host the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. ( LPGA) Annual Tour Qualifier and the LPGA Qualifying School II. Learn more at plantationgcc.com/lpga-tour-qualifier Enjoy the issue, and happy October!

These were just a few questions being asked at the Venice Yacht Club. The yacht club took these questions to heart and formed the first Environmental Committee in the state of Florida. The formation of the committee was voted into the By-Laws on January 8, 2023 and is chaired by Past Commodore, Melinda Short.
Their mission is to raise awareness of environmental and sustainable issues to our membership and to promote and protect as well as aid our intercoastal waterways and surrounding environment.
To do this the VYC Environmental Committee created partnerships to promote coastal stewardship and aid by partnering with multiple organizations along with city and state entities. Partnerships created since 2023 are: Sarasota Bay Watch; Suncoast Reef Rovers; Oyster Boys Conservation, Reef Innovations, Reef Foundations, Suncoast Aqua Adventures, Boy Scout Troop 77, VYC Kayak Club, Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Two underwater clean-ups were performed in Robert’s Bay with the removal of 800 lbs of debris. We started a recycling program that will save 21,000 lbs from the land fill each year, along with reducing plastics from our takeout containers as well as getting rid of plastic silverware at our tiki bar. We are
using the wine, beer and liquor bottles from our recycling program in an environmentally friendly kiln into recyclable glass dishes that when sold the dollars are being returned to help fund other projects. A year long oyster study is being conducted on one of their docks and is being monitored by a marine biologist who’s results will be shared with numerous organizations around the state.
This committee has worked with their partners to install 19 reef balls on Roberts Bay as well as over 100 vertical oyster gardens to clean our waters. That coupled with working with the City of Venice on the “first” limited anchorage area on the west coast of Florida on Robert’s Bay will help us keep derelict boats from anchoring in our bay. In May 2024, 120 red mangroves were planted around Robert’s Bay to help filter out nutrients and improve water quality, while helping with erosion and creating nurseries for small fish.
Stay tuned for upcoming projects: “Adopt A Mangrove Plant”, Storm Sewer Marker Replacement Project and a pilot program introducing clams into Robert’s Bay.
If interested in volunteering to help with these projects, please contact Melinda Short at MLSVENICE@GMAIL.COM

Unlock the power of nutrient-dense foods to sustain health and combat disease
ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS
In today’s world, the link between diet and health is undeniable. Scientific research consistently shows that what we eat plays a crucial role in preventing disease, boosting immunity, and promoting overall wellness. "Food is either creating disease or preventing disease," according to Dr. Chippy Ajithan, a cardiologist at Heart Specialists of Sarasota.
Medical professionals and dietitians alike agree that nutrient-dense foods and balanced diets are essential for maintaining health and reducing the risk of chronic conditions. With the right dietary choices, we have the power to shape our health and well-being.
Dr. Ajithan believes that good nutrition is one of the keys to a healthy life, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital Dietitian Laura McLeroy agrees. That’s because “strengthening the body’s immune system hinges on the food we eat,” she explained.
McLeroy recommended incorporating nutrient-dense, "powerhouse" foods–such as berries, citrus, fish, beans, yogurt, tomatoes, and both cruciferous and colorful vegetables–into our diets. These foods combat illness-causing free radicals and help prevent chronic conditions like heart disease and cancer. To maximize these benefits, McLeroy
further advised focusing on obtaining essential nutrients from unprocessed foods rather than relying on supplements.
Amid the countless diet options available, the Mediterranean diet, and plant-based diets, stand out as the most effective for promoting overall health, focusing on wellness rather than just weight loss. Studies have associated both food plans with improved blood sugar control, heart health, and even brain function.
• Research consistently shows that diets rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and low in animal products are among the healthiest. The Mediterranean Diet, known for its balanced variety of healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, is linked to reduced inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.
• Plant-Based: Plant-based eating promotes overall health by emphasizing whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. It’s linked to lower risks of chronic diseases, improved digestion, and increased energy. This sustainable diet nourishes both the body and the planet.
Dr. Ajithan cautioned that major dietary changes can be challenging, so start small. Slowly reduce processed foods and cut back on red meat and poultry while, at the same time, increasing your intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In this way, "we crowd out animal protein with plant-based choices," she said.
Author Kiki Nelson, in her new book “Plantfully Simple,” embraces the idea that life and food should be simple and joyful. The book offers more than just recipes; it’s a guide to a healthier lifestyle.
The author recommends transitioning to a plantbased diet gradually over three weeks or more. "Start by swapping your old meals for plant-based ones," she advised. "Focus on easy, simple meals without worrying about protein or macros at first." As you progress, she suggests incorporating more whole foods and cutting out refined, calorie-dense packaged items.
Nelson also encourages a shift in thinking: “Instead of focusing on protein, carbs, and fats, think of your meals in terms of a side of non-starchy vegetables, a side of starchy vegetables like brown rice or chickpeas, and finish with some fruit for dessert.”
If healthy eating feels like an uphill battle, it might be time to explore the insights of registered
We can learn to eat when we’re hungry, honor our body’s unique needs, and find pleasure in food!
dietitian, nutritionist, and author Shana Minei Spence, MS, RDN, CDN. In her new book, “Live Nourished: Make Peace with Food, Banish Body Shame, and Reclaim Joy,” Spence guides readers on a journey to heal their relationship with food. She delves into concepts like intuitive eating and health at every size, offering a compassionate approach to wellness.
Live Nourished isn’t just another diet book— it’s a roadmap to living, moving, and eating in a way that truly works for you. Spence’s message is clear: by separating our self-worth from diet culture, we can learn to eat when we’re hungry,
honor our body’s unique needs, and find pleasure in food—all while nourishing both body and soul.
Spence emphasizes that every positive choice, no matter how small, is an investment in your health and happiness. "Whether it’s choosing to spend more time outside and less time in front of a screen, investing in a portable water bottle to stay hydrated, or saying yes to brunch with friends without worrying about restrictive diets—any progress is still progress. And remember, there's no such thing as perfect anything."
