Mattamy Homes debuts a new era in active adult living with the opening of seven fully furnished model homes in Brightmore at Wellen Park. Introducing the area’s newest and most vibrant 55+ lifestyle, Brightmore offers paired villas, single-family homes and 11 acres of future resort-style amenities catering to lively and leisurely pastimes – from pickleball courts to poolside cabanas and a 21,000-squarefoot clubhouse.
Residents of Wellen Park’s first for sale community for 55+ active adults enjoy inspiring homes nestled along culde-sac streets, lakes and wetland preserves and an elevated experiential lifestyle fit for social butterflies, yogis, fitness enthusiasts and even four-legged family members. Engaging activities, entertaining events and programs will enhance social opportunities, filling residents’ calendars from sunrise to sundown and beyond.
The professionally decorated models provide an inside perspective of Brightmore’s lifestyle and Mattamy Homes’ 12 inspired home designs featuring attractive coastal, transitional and craftsman exterior architecture and openconcept floor plans with large, light-filled main gathering spaces and lanais for outdoor living. Versatile flex rooms meet both needs and wants – as a den, home office or hobby room.
Two furnished models illustrate Brightmore’s trio of twobedroom, two-bath paired villa designs, including the largest – the 1,754-square-foot Champagne. The villa homes also have two-car garages, abundant storage and are right-sized starting from 1,412 square feet.
Mattamy Homes has completed five single-family model homes with two and three bedrooms and 1,687 to 2,478 square feet. Several homes feature 12-foot multi-sliding glass doors elevating the indoor-outdoor connection. The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Sapphire has a wraparound porch, 2,385 square feet and a tucked-away morning kitchen/coffee bar that doubles as a butler’s pantry for ease in entertaining.
All homes in Brightmore feature quartz countertops, kitchen pantries, center islands and stainless steel ranges, microwaves and dishwashers. Well-appointed owner’s suites have walk-in closets and private bathrooms with two sinks and glass showers. Homes are built with impact-resistant windows and include smart-home tech packages and paver driveways and lanais.
As the heart of Brightmore’s robust lifestyle, the future clubhouse and campus-inspired amenities feature distinctive architecture and favorite gathering destinations. Inside, there’s a social hall, clubroom, cafe and bar, fitness center and group fitness studio.
Outdoor amenities include two pools – a 2,800-squarefoot lap pool and a 3,700-square-foot resort-style pool with sun shelf and spa and a sloping beach entry. The resort experience is complemented by abundant gathering spaces, a sandy beach, shade cabanas with loungers and multiple firepit destinations.
Brightmore’s 11-acre amenity campus will also have eight pickleball courts with a ninth stadium court, plus a yoga lawn, dining area and separate paw parks for large and small dogs.
“The amenities provide a place where our residents can stay and play all day as there will be so much to enjoy,” said Bob Meyn, president for Mattamy Homes’ Tampa and Southwest Florida division. “We are very excited to bring this unique lifestyle community that is like no other in Wellen Park.”
Brightmore residents will enjoy meeting new friends and neighbors the moment they move in – a full-time lifestyle director is busy planning a year-round calendar of events, clubs and classes.
Brightmore is located along West Villages Parkway in the heart of Wellen Park’s Playmore District.
Homes start in the low $400,000s.

The 20,000 sq. ft. Rugs as Art showroom offers distinct areas dedicated to handmade, machine-made, and custom-made area rugs.
In the early-to-mid 1980s, John and Lucy Murse embarked on a journey from Pennsylvania to find the perfect place to call home and realize John’s dream of owning a beautiful rug store. The quest led them to various places in the Southeastern US over a two-year period.
“OUR CUSTOMERS COME BACK BECAUSE THEY ENJOY DEALING WITH US, AND THEY KNOW THERE IS A GREAT SENSE OF INTEGRITY AND HONESTY HERE.”
However, just like the classic “Goldilocks” tale, nothing felt ‘just right,’ prompting the family to take a break and visit Lucy’s aunt and uncle in Florida. “They were on Anna Maria Island, which we’d never heard of before,” said John. “Lucy’s uncle told us to check out Sarasota as a possible location,” he added.
John visited Sarasota, did his due diligence, and realized it was the right fit. “Sarasota wasn’t too big or too small. It had the flavor of a large community and the tempo of a smaller town,” he explained. Plus, his research indicated that Sarasota would experience steady growth potential over the next 25 years.
Rugs As Art, Inc. began in an 800 sq. ft. space in Gulf Gate in 1986. In 1989, it relocated to a South Tamiami Trail location of 4,500 sq. ft. They launched an online presence in 1992, and in June 2001, Rugs as Art moved to its present 20,000 sq. ft. building two miles south of the previous South Trail location.
The building was designed to last, boasting 14-foot ceilings, handsome hardwood flooring, excellent lighting, and efficient rack systems accommodating several thousand rugs, accessories, and furnishings. Separate areas are dedicated to handmade, machine-made, and custom-made area rugs.
The business was founded with the objective of providing quality area rugs to the Sarasota market with superior selection, outstanding service, and highly attractive pricing. The selection has always included top-quality traditional Orientals, world-class contemporary designs, and many levels of classics in between.
When asked about the secret to Rugs as Art’s longevity, John first gives credit to a higher power. He also believes one key to the company’s success is a personal relationship with the community.
“We have repeat customers of 38 years,” said John. “They come back because they enjoy dealing with us, and they know there is a great sense of integrity and honesty here.”
“We always live by the 3 S’s,” said Jesse Murse. “That is SELECTION, SAVINGS, & SERVICE.” Jesse explained that “Rugs As Art has a selection of thousands of rugs to choose from with savings that can put a smile on your face, and we are known for our awarding winning customer service, before and after the sale.”
Being a family business is rewarding and also a huge plus. Today two of John and Lucy’s three
sons and their wives are all engaged in the business and “all share their talents in different ways,” he explained.
Over 38 years as a staple in Sarasota, the Murse family continues to earn high praises not only from customers, but also from international vendors, manufacturers, and industry icons receiving multiple awards and recognition. Calling the business a ‘one store regional powerhouse,’ Industry magazine “Rug News” commented that “Rugs as Art is an anomaly in the world of 21st-century retailing... attracting customers from an ever-expanding area of demographic influence.”
“OUR SELECTION HAS ALWAYS INCLUDED TOPQUALITY TRADITIONAL ORIENTALS, WORLD-CLASS CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS, AND MANY LEVELS OF CLASSICS IN BETWEEN.”
TOP: This 100% wool pile rug, hand-knotted by artisans in India, brings a touch of antique beauty into any home.
BOTTOM LEFT: Influenced by the cubism art movement, and hand-knotted in luxurious silk and wool, this modern work of art brings elegance and sophistication to any decor.
BOTTOM RIGHT: Hand-knotted of 100% wool, this abstract area rug brings our favorite gulf coast colors to life in a contemporary and easy to decorate around design.
An important part of the Rugs As Art philosophy is making sure customers become educated about rugs. “We offer a product people don’t necessarily understand a lot about. We simplify the explanation, educating our customers so they have a better comprehension of what they are considering purchasing,” said John.
What’s more, the store boasts an in house repair and fabrication shop that can help restore and repurpose customers’ existing rugs. Also, for those who need that extra help in finding something special, Rugs As Art offers a custom rug design center with a dedicated graphic designer who can help assist your imagination and creativity run wild and develop your own rug, for example, transform a photo of your pet into an area rug, John explained. “My old saying is: ‘If we don’t have it, can’t get it, or can’t make it, you don’t need it!’”
INTRODUCING “DAVID ANDREW” PAINTS, THE RESULT OF DECADES OF DEDICATION TO CUSTOMER SERVICE
““We developed David Andrew Premium paints to do exactly what they are supposed to – every time.”
Sarasota Paint owner David Jasik is dedicated to providing the utmost quality for his clientele. In that pursuit, the authorized Benjamin Moore dealer recently introduced his own, exclusive premium line of paints under the banner “David Andrew.” These meticulously crafted Interior and Exterior paints bear the hallmark of Jasik's commitment to excellence in both customer service and product offerings.
Reflecting on his four decades of experience working with a myriad of paints and finishes, Jasik identified a persistent need for a product line that both retail customers and painting contractors could trust unequivocally. He shared, "Over the past 40 years, I've had the opportunity to work with hundreds of paints and finishes. I realized there was still a need for a product line that our retail customers, and our painting contractors, would have faith in. These paints will do exactly what they are supposed to – every time."
• Guardian: a self-priming exterior paint that also fills hairline cracks and provides extraordinary weatherability.
• Armor: an Interior/Exterior trim paint that offers tenacious adhesion and unrivaled scrubbability.
• Classic: a flat-finish interior paint for ceilings and walls where no reflectivity is important.
• Essence: a premium high hiding interior wall finish offered in a subtle matte, and an eggshell finish.
• Prime: an interior primer sealer for wood and drywall surfaces that’s high hiding, provides exceptional bonding and can be left as a finish paint.

David Andrew paints are customizable in a spectrum of colors and exhibit excellent color retention. Leveraging his role as the developer, Jasik has successfully maintained cost efficiency, passing on substantial savings to his customers. The entire paint line is available at a more affordable price point, often half the cost of comparable premium paint products. Jasik expressed, "Many of my long-time customers and (contractor) painters have told me that this is going to be what they use, exclusively."
Furthermore, the David Andrew Exterior paints come with a remarkable 10-year labor and material warranty when applied by a licensed painting contractor. Jasik assured, "We have relationships with very qualified painting contractors that I’m happy to give out." Regarding the Interior line, he emphasized a "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back" policy if customers felt the product did not meet their expectations.
With ownership of six Sarasota Paint stores in Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Nokomis, and the newest addition in North Port, Jasik ensures widespread accessibility to both Benjamin Moore and David Andrew paints. The North Port location, conveniently situated on North Port Blvd. and US 41, caters seamlessly to Wellen Park residents and beyond.

Living well–especially as we grow older–is an art worth pursuing. Recent trends suggest that mature adults’ definition of “retiring in style” is rapidly transforming, thus reinforcing why savvy senior living communities like Jacaranda Trace are reimagining their future.
Most retirees seek maintenance-free living with well-appointed amenities and services to maintain the freedom to travel and enjoy life at their leisure—as well as live in a stylishly designed home that matches their distinct personality and budget. The added value of a seamless system filled with choice and convenience to access member-exclusive wellness and future healthcare options, such as outpatient rehabilitation, in-home support, skilled
home health, and boutique-style assisted living with nursing care when needed, elevates Jacaranda Trace beyond most retirement living options.
Jacaranda Trace is located in south Venice and encompasses a beautiful 33-acre neighborhood surrounded by many prized golf and country club communities. After Jacaranda Trace was acquired in mid-2022 by Convivial Life, Inc., a Florida not-for-profit organization, Convivial wasted no time responding to the ever-evolving paradigm from a growing segment of seniors.
“The word ‘Convivial’ speaks to the culture and experience we want to create in our communities now, and, into the future,” stated
“Jacaranda Trace is Venice’s premier community–providing an exceptional and stylish retirement experience.”
CEO Joel Anderson. “Jacaranda Trace is filled with a wonderful family of resident members, neighbors, and staff who make the community a great place to live and work,” said Anderson, adding “Our timeless design of the community and homes available, Convivial’s onsite healthcare, and other amenities are great, but it’s our community’s culture that prospective residents see and feel when they visit us. It sets us apart and builds confidence in their decision to become a member.”
Robust demand in 2023 broke the 20-year record of new member sales at Jacaranda Trace, making it the ideal time for Convivial to announce the expansion of 88 apartment homes for the final phase of development at Jacaranda Trace. The expansion’s floor plans will include both one- and two-plus bedroom designs, ranging from 1,250 to 2,200+ square feet. Each residence will be beautifully designed and offer a private outdoor terrace, underbuilding parking, and Jacaranda Trace’s celebrated lifestyle. Priority deposits are now
being accepted to lock-in special privileges to preview and reserve these new homes when presales begin in the second quarter of 2024. Convivial is also thrilled to begin improvements on the clubhouse’s amenities and services, as well as significant upgrades in each existing apartment home and villa to match what most retirees are seeking. “We receive rave reviews in the upgrades and improvements we are making,” said Kristen Myers, Vice President of Membership Sales. “Our spacious residences offer many choices from apartments to villas and include open floor plans to entertain with quality finishes and design options to satisfy incoming members’ preferences.”
Higher standards will be expected from those like Jacaranda Trace to satisfy every aspect of active retirees’ living preferences. That’s why Convivial is dedicated to seeing Jacaranda Trace be Venice’s premier community in providing an exceptional, and stylish, retirement experience.

LOCAL ARCHITECTURE FIRM THAT DESIGNS EXTRAORDINARY RESIDENCES & PUBLIC BUILDINGS NOW LEADING THE RECONSTRUCTION OF VENICE THEATRE AFTER HURRICANE IAN
Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors has gained renown for crafting luxurious custom homes and designing stand-out public buildings. Here is a look at some examples of both, plus an update on the firm’s
Sweet Sparkman excels not only in aesthetic design but also in structural engineering, particularly for coastal areas. This was evident when both
“SEPTEMBER 2022’S HURRICANE IAN WREAKED HAVOC ON THE HISTORIC VENICE THEATRE, CAUSING DEVASTATING DAMAGE.”
current work: rebuilding the Venice Theatre post Hurricane-Ian.
HOMES DESIGNED BY SWEET SPARKMAN
One standout example of Sweet Sparkman's geographically informed contemporary architecture is a residence in Blackburn Bay, which showcases a splitlevel floor plan that harmoniously complements the site's natural topography. Similarly, Osprey’s "Guest House in the Trees,” set within a mature oak hammock along Sarasota Bay, draws inspiration from the character of live oaks shaped by coastal winds. These homes exemplify the firm's commitment to organic architecture reflective of its surroundings.
Southwest Florida residences and public buildings designed by the firm withstood the battering of Hurricane Ian–a residence on Captiva Island and the Captiva Fire Station included. The firm's expertise in coastal design ensures structures are not only visually appealing but also robust in the face of natural disasters.
In September 2022, Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc on the historic Venice Theatre, causing devastating damage. The storm knocked out the back wall of the 1926-built structure, which led to extensive water damage throughout the theater.
“ONE IMPORTANT GOAL IS TO UNIFY THE LOOK OF THE THREE VENICE THEATRE BUILDINGS.”
Before the hurricane struck, Sweet Sparkman was already involved in conceptual master planning for the future growth of Venice Theatre, and renovations to existing buildings. That included ADA upgrades, cosmetic renovations, roof replacements, HVAC upgrades, and plumbing updates across all three of its buildings.
Hurricane Ian also destroyed the theatre’s Fly Loft, which is the crucial area above a theater stage where sets and mechanical elements of a production are stored. Sweet Sparkman worked with Sarasota's Magnum Builders to not just rebuild, but also modernize the structure to current theatre standards and safety codes.
Project Manager Hannah Boehmer emphasized the importance of modernizing the Fly Loft to enhance the theatre’s capabilities, ensuring it can last for 50 years or more. The project included efforts to secure approvals from various boards, such as Site & Development, Rezone, Height Exemption, and the Historic and Architectural Preservation Board.
That earlier master plan for Venice Theatre is on hold, said Boehmer. Moving forward Boehmer said that one important goal is to unify the look of the three Venice Theatre buildings.
