Happy Summer, Venice! July days are the hottest and longest of the year, leaving us all needing a little relief. Luckily, in this issue our team at Venice City Lifestyle has put together a plan for getting you that relief—a plethora of ideas on how to have fun during summer in Venice! We start with a feature by our very own Stephanie Snow of Stephanie Snow Photography, who has been contributing excellent photos to our magazine over the past two years. Stephanie has been scuba diving for over twenty years, and she takes us on a hunt for fossilized Megalodon teeth and other treasures on shore dives all over the Venice region. Over at Big Bam eBikes, Pamela and Ray Fiume are pioneering the emergence of electric bicycles in Venice. Big Bam eBikes offers tours around the island of Venice and I had the good fortune of participating in one. My notion that riding an ebike means no real exercise was totally wrong. You actually pedal the bikes just like traditional bicycles and when you need a little boost going up a hill or when you are a bit tired, click the gear and let the bike’s electric motor do the work for you! I loved my experience on my Big Bam eBike Friday Coffee Ride. We stopped at the South Jetty on Venice Island to enjoy the beautiful Gulf view, a cup of coffee, and a treat of Mini Donuts and Cinnamon Shark Bites from Jetty Jack’s. Venice Avenue Dermatology offers us tips on how to protect our skin while having fun outdoors in the Florida sun, while Mayhem Athlete gives us plenty of ideas on how to have a bodyweight workout at home or on a vacation when time doesn’t permit you to go to your gym. Fireworks will be taking place on the Fourth of July at the Venice Jetty and at the Atlanta Braves’ CoolToday Park. CoolToday Park will also offer a whole host of family-friendly activities inside the stadium and on the Events Lawn. In our Business Monthly section, our continued regional growth has seen a new South County courthouse open, while Village on the Isle raised nearly $100,000 at its 3rd Annual Golf Classic. Other tips for summer fun in our Local Experiences section include parasailing, visiting the Myakka Outpost, hiring a fishing charter, and enjoying Happy Hour at Nokomo’s Sunset Grill. HIT THE TRAILS AT WELLEN PARK

Visit Wellen Park any time of the day and you’re bound to see people on the move. The fast-selling community’s growing network of trails not only offers pedestrians, bicyclists and joggers an easy outdoor recreational outlet, it also enhances wellbeing and a connection to each other. Residents and locals enjoy a communal experience every time they hit Wellen Park’s 21 miles of existing multimodal trails designed for walking, cycling, running and low-speed vehicles. A journey that may start as a solo endeavor often grows to include neighbors, friends and coworkers. The level of interconnectiviy the trails provide is outstanding,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “Residents of gated neighborhoods get on the trails and meet residents from other neighborhoods, people they might not meet otherwise. The trails connect everybody. Woven throughout the community, Wellen Park’s nine interconnecting trails range from the 0.67-mile loop around the West Villages Lake to the 6.3-mile route circling the West Villages District. Other paths meander along Tamiami Trail and Preto Boulevard, loop around Blue Heron Park and connect to CoolToday Park, River Road and the public lakefront Fit Trail and activity stations on the State College of Florida campus. All trails lead to Downtown Wellen, the vibrant, pedestrian-friendly gathering place under construction for Wellen Park and the region. The trail system is so integral to Wellen Park’s focus on wellness and outdoor recreation, it will eventually expand to 40 total miles, including two new trails coming in the next two years – a 2.8-mile loop around the centerpiece

Grand Lake in Downtown Wellen and another 4-mile route brushing against a large nature preserve and wetlands. The new trails will deepen the connection to the natural environment and feature crushed stone and natural surfaces. As an amenity for residents, trails rank at the top of what matters most to homebuyers. “Trails are the number one amenity homebuyers want and they’re the number one amenity residents use most when they move in,” said Severance. “New residents may never step foot on the tennis court, but they’ll use the trails. The investment in trail systems for generations to come adds value to a community.” There are plans for QR-coded signs introducing visitors to the local wildlife and natural habitats and wayfinding signs where paths cross. Future trails will elevate the nature and community experience with boardwalks, vistas across wetlands, prairies and ponds, and easy access from existing and future neighborhoods. With 12-foot-wide concrete and asphalt surfaces, benches and shade, Wellen Park’s trails are a favorite destination for regional cycling and running groups who appreciate the changing scenery and enhanced safety. Mile markers were recently installed for added convenience. Wellen Park hosts monthly running, walking and cycling group meetups at the Welcome Center where participants can explore the trails with friends and neighbors. Sign-up at wellenpark.com. And keep a look out for some exciting race events coming this Fall/Winter. “Our commitment to trails and pathways is paramount,” said Severance. “It’s where wellbeing thrives. Trails have a way of engaging both in the physical aspect of wellness and the mental and psychological benefits of wellbeing.”

New South County Courthouse Opens As Region Experiences Rapid Growth The 42,000-square-foot, two-story South County Courthouse opened in May with a ribbon-cutting and remarks from county commissioners. The courthouse has one full-sized courtroom on the first floor and three more full-sized courtrooms the second floor. It's designed to accommodate additional courtrooms in the future as Venice grows. AT BIG BAM EBIKES, THE ENERGY IS ELECTRIC Offering electric bicycle sales, rentals, tours, and repairs for electric and traditional bikes, Big Bam eBikes and its exuberant owner Pamela Fiume, together with her husband Ray Fiume, are at the forefront of the electric bike revolution. The bikes, which feature small battery-powered motors, assist riders as they pedal. Popular in other regions of the country, they are just now gaining ground in Florida. “Three years ago, I was reading an article about ebikes and how common they are in California,” says Pamela. “I knew they would be in demand here because they make riding easier for people who have physical issues, who are getting older. It came to me like a message from above. For the next four months, I researched everything about ebikes. I’d never even ridden one!” Pamela—a Riverview High School grad— had returned to Venice after spending long stretches of her business career in California and Kansas. She and Ray, who also manages an insurance agency, named their new ebike business after two different ebike lines—Big Cat and BAM Power—and put one of their beloved dogs, Arthur Underfoot, in their logo. They rented a space at the Venice Farmers Market and began selling ebikes and testing the public’s interest. The response was instant.

“I was talking to 30 or more people every Saturday,” Pamela says. “Then in December 2019, we found a location for our store right at the end of the Legacy Trail on Venice Avenue. It became the very first ebike store in Venice. I had so many people coming in saying, ‘There is so much information and so many options online, I had to come into a real store and look through the bikes.’ People get tired of all the information online and they want to actually see and experience the bikes.” The onset of the pandemic made interest in ebikes explode. People in lockdown needed new forms of entertainment and just to get out of the house. They flocked to Pamela’s ebike lines like Magnum, Bagi Bike, Gazelle, Emojo and others. Along with Ray, Pamela’s Big Bam eBikes now has four employees. “We call ourselves ‘The Happiest Place In Venice,’ because of how happy people are when that motor kicks on and they suddenly feel like they are flying,” Pamela explains. “People feel really elated. We are dedicated to making sure everyone finds their perfect ebike and that they can ride them safely. When our customers are getting started, some haven’t ridden a bicycle in many years, others feel unsteady. I run behind them holding on to their bike, just like you would with a kid on training wheels.”

When my husband and I moved here several years ago, we found ourselves at the beach every week, enjoying the sand and sun. Scuba divers for more than two decades, we wanted to try to find Megalodon teeth, whale vertebra, mastodon teeth, and other ancient treasures found in an underwater fossil bed just off the coast. With more than fourteen miles of beach from Casey Key to Manasota Key, our area offers endless opportunities to shore dive. Divers must display a minimum 12”x12” Diver Down flag and stay within 100 feet of it, but aside from that, grab your gear, a tank and a compass and start exploring! Remember, too, divers must stay at least 100 yards away from the Venice Jetty and the Venice Fishing Pier, so although that area is a great spot for a post-dive lunch, don’t plan your dive here! One of the best places to dive and search for fossils is at Service Club Park, which has showers for before and after your dive. “When you get to the beach, turn 45 degrees to the right and swim out 350 yards,” says Ben Schultz, owner of the Venice Dive Center and a fossil expert. There you’ll find gravel and fossil beds and it can be a good place to look for Megalodon teeth. It can take twenty minutes to swim out to twenty feet of depth, but you’ll know you’ve arrived when the bottom changes from plain sand to black sand ripples full of shells and teeth. Take a 250 degree heading from shore and swim out until you’re even with the pier. Descend fifteen feet and you’ll be in a good area for teeth. Fifty yards west is a coquina reef full of fish. South Brohard Park is another popular beach for shore diving. Cross the boardwalk on the left closest to the parking lot entrance. Take a heading of 250 degrees, cross over the sand bar, and 50 yards farther out is an artificial limestone block reef in fifteen feet of water. Enjoy the fish and fossils around this area. If you take a 270 degree heading, you’ll swim over a lot of sand, then suddenly reach a coquina reef in fifteen feet. This sedimentary rock supports algae and grasses and provides habitat for crabs, hogfish, snapper, sea robins and black drum. Take a heading of 300 degrees and swim out 250 yards to an area of black sand, broken shells and potentially some fossils.

The end of Alhambra Road is another popular shore diving spot. There are no facilities and parking is limited, so gear up at your vehicle and follow the sand path to the shore. Swim directly offshore until you come to the small sand channels with shells, fossils and teeth. Shore diving at Manasota Beach involves a long swim out, and the fossil beds aren’t as defined. The times I’ve dived there, I've been pleasantly surprised by the hundreds of sand dollars and unusual creatures like gaudy clown crab, toadfish, sea nettles, and flying gurnards. Shore diving takes work and preparation. Visibility is usually less than ten feet and it’s difficult to keep track of dive buddies. I make sure each diver has a flag and compass. We review our plan in case we lose each other. When you’re ready to get offshore into deeper water, there are several dive boat operators to choose from. Venice Dive Center is the only full-service dive shop in Venice and offers daily trips, gear for purchase and rental, and dive classes. Their Coast Guard certified vessel carries up to eight explorers. The knowledgeable crew takes divers to the best locations along the famous ‘The Boneyard’ fossil bed, which is between 1 ½ to 3 miles offshore. The two-tank trip leaves at 7:30 AM and returns around noon.

It’s summertime and the living is easy. School’s out, snowbirds have flown North and it’s time to let the adventures begin! No matter where your summer fun takes you, sunscreen and sun protective gear should be part of the equation. “We love spending time outdoors and on the water--the beach, the pool, the golf course,” says board-certified dermatologist Jeffrey R. Hunek, M.D., founder of Venice Avenue Dermatology. “But people of all ages really must be diligent with the sunscreen and sun protection. Skin cancer doesn’t accept excuses.”

Dr. Hunek's best practices for staying sun safe while enjoying outdoor activities start with protective clothing. Choose lightweight sun protective cloth with a tight weave and a UPF rating of 50 or higher. Include a wide-brimmed hat. Carry your shade with you and wear a hat with a 7” or wider brim – all the way around. The skin on your face and neck will thank you. Find the SPF 30 or higher sunscreen you like best and use it every day - on all exposed skin. Lay it on thick. Make sure you use at least a shot glass full (1 oz.) each time you apply. If a bottle lasts more than a few outings, you’re probably not using it correctly. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Avoid using expired products as they can be ineffective. Avoid peak sun hours, usually between 10 AM and 2 PM. If you can’t avoid peak hours, seek shade. Bring a UV protective umbrella or other portable pop-up tent or shade structure. Dr. Hunek and all the providers at Venice Avenue Dermatology take sun protection seriously - and they think you should, too. Caring for patients on Florida’s Southwest coast for nearly two decades, they have seen what can happen, from sunburns to skin cancer, when sun protection falls off the priority list. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the risk for melanoma doubles if you’ve had more than five sunburns. “There’s no such thing as a healthy tan. A sunburn or any change in color to your skin following UV exposure is a sign of damage,” says Dr. Hunek, who recommends monthly self-skin exams, followed by an annual checkup with a board-certified dermatologist. Even if you don’t notice a change, Dr. Hunek says that it helps to get a second pair of professional eyes on your skin yearly. Protection and early detection are the key. “Go out and enjoy your time in the sun doing all those activities you love, just be smart about it,” advises Hunek. “I like to say that tans are for tourists.
