LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Father's Day!

June 2022 PUBLISHER

Charmaine Tincher charmaine.tincher@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Welcome to summer, Venice! Our summers used to be so quiet. But our region has undergone such spectacular growth that we hardly slow down at all anymore. From entertainment, to shopping, to dining, there’s so much more to do, and so many great people to do them with! In this, our annual ‘Gentlemen's Issue,’ we’re pleased to introduce you to some of the talented neighbors that help make Venice the great place it is. Our cover this month—shot by our talented photographer Stephanie Snow—is Dan O’Dowd, the subject of our main feature. An analyst with MLB Network and former General Manager of the Colorado Rockies, Dan’s incredible life includes multiple World Series appearances, and along with his lovely wife, Jackie, the raising of three wonderful kids. Learn about this remarkable family, and Dan and his son Chris’s new start-up company, WIN Reality, in Trendsetter on page 18. Next, meet Executive Chef Frank Rossitto, the man behind the culinary magic at local-favorite Allegro Bistro. Chef Frank offers us step-by-step instructions to prepare Allegro’s famous Shrimp and Scallops Portofino on page 28. Over at Ciao Bella Salon, our good friend and master stylist Joe Zottola offers us expert advice for men’s hair. You can read about his wealth of styling experience on page 24. Capstan Financial Consulting Group, a local, independently operated company, is pleased to announce its newest location—right in the heart of Downtown Wellen—on page 32. We share photos from the annual Chalk Festival and Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County’s Volunteer Appreciation Picnic in our City Scene section, while in Business Monthly, we meet the great new hires at Venice Avenue Dermatology, learn about Apex Boxing + Fitness’s free pop-up bootcamps, and the Venice Symphony’s amazing summer camps for kids. With Father’s Day upon us, in our Local Experiences section our team has come up with a number of great Dad-centered activities to enjoy locally from chartering a boat, to having a cold one at the ballpark, to golfing. Don't forget that even though Spring Training is over, the Atlanta Braves' CoolToday Park has a full slate of summer events on its schedule! Lastly, check out our contest to win a trip to Austin Texas on page 36. Happy Father’s Day to my son, Brandon, and to my son-in-law, Jeff. And with all the graduations this time of year, congratulations to all our graduates. May your dreams come true!

INTRODUCING THE BANYAN HOUSE, DOWNTOWN WELLEN’S PREMIER LAKEFRONT RESTAURANT

At The Banyan House, Downtown Wellen’s premier lakefront restaurant, patrons will enjoy upscale new American cuisine and picturesque sunset and water views along the 80-acre Grand Lake. The locally owned restaurant was recently announced as Downtown Wellen’s signature dining experience and exclusive event caterer for Solis Hall, Wellen Park’s event venue for celebrations and special gatherings. “The Banyan House introduces an exciting concept to Downtown Wellen and complements our growing restaurant scene,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “It reflects the vibrant, joyful spirit of Wellen Park as a place to gather with family and friends, celebrate milestones and everyday moments, and connect to nature and the water.” Anticipated to open in November 2022 with the completion of Downtown Wellen’s first phase, The Banyan House will serve lunch, dinner and brunch and offer a menu of orangewood-fired grilled seafood, steak and eclectic fare. Created by long-time restaurateurs, brothers David and Dennis Valentino and partner Mark Costanzo, The Banyan House is the only lakefront restaurant in Downtown Wellen, the central hub and social gathering destination for residents of Wellen Park and the regional community. The restaurant will offer seating for 320, a large bar and lounge, and 6,100 square feet, including 2,000 square feet of alfresco dining – all showcasing lingering lake views. “We are excited by the opportunity to bring a first-class dining experience to Wellen Park,” said David Valentino. “The Banyan House will offer upscale dining but in a fun, high-energy space. We really want to lean into the waterfront setting and being part of downtown.” The restaurant’s open, light-filled interiors by Tampabased api(+), ArchitecturePlus International are centered around a large wood-fired grill and will pay tribute to the

restaurant’s namesake with 20-foot-tall lifelike banyan tree sculptures. The Banyan House’s chef-driven menu will offer casual lunchtime selections, fusion-inspired new American cuisine during dinner hours, and a formal brunch with carving stations and a champagne bar. It joins a family of Venice and Port Charlotte restaurants created by the Valentinos and Costanzo during the last 25 years: Prime Serious Steak, Donato’s Italian Restaurant and Bocca Lupo Coal Fired Pizza. Their Bocca Lupo at Wellen Park’s Marketplace opened in 2020 and quickly became the number one location. “From a culinary perspective, it’s incredibly exciting to build an entirely new menu for The Banyan House,” said Valentino. “We’re having a lot of fun with it.” The Banyan House will also be the exclusive caterer for indoor and outdoor events, community celebrations, weddings and parties at neighboring Solis Hall. With their Claw and Co. lobster roll concept, the team also plans to be part of The Yard, Downtown Wellen’s hub for food and fun. Designed to inspire joy and merriment, The Yard is a collection of repurposed shipping containers featuring counter-served cuisine with al fresco seating and outdoor activity centers. The Banyan House joins a growing list of retail, restaurants and professional services coming to Downtown Wellen, including Mirabella’s Italian Coastal Cuisine, Oak & Stone, Villani & Co., Bright Ice, Capstan Financial Consulting Group, and Kind Vibes Outfitters for bicycle, kayak and paddleboard rentals. Additional retailers and companies that will have a presence in Downtown Wellen include Paint Nail Bar, Princi Pets, Florida Lakes Surgical, Dr. Seymour Orthodontics and RWA Engineering.

Dan O’Dowd Circles The Bases

The Boca Grande Resident And Former MLB General Manager Talks Executive Decisions And His New Tech Startup: WIN Reality ARTICLE BY TONY D’ SOUZ A | PHOTOG R APHY BY STE PHANIE SNOW PHOTOG R APHY

18

T R E N D SE T T E R | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

Dan O’Dowd is a humble guy who has no real right to be one. After all, just look at what he has accomplished. The son of a New Jersey dairy farmer, Dan’s 40-year career in Major League Baseball saw him make the 2007 World Series as General Manager of the Colorado Rockies, the 1995 and 1997 World Series as Assistant General Manager of the Cleveland Indians, and win the 1983 World Series with the Baltimore Orioles as a young executive. In 2009, he was named MLB’s General Manager/Executive of the Year. Over the past seven years, he’s been a regular analyst on MLB Network. And he’s recently launched a tech start-up—WIN Reality—with his eldest son, Chris. By the time he was six-years-old, Dan knew baseball would be his life. Recruited to play at Florida’s Rollins College, he quickly recognized he wasn’t the most talented player on the field. He decided that even if he wasn’t going to be a professional MLB player, he could aspire to be a MLB executive. He was accepted into MLB’s Executive Development program, a coveted national internship that only took on two young people per year. His first mentor, Bill Murray, gambled on Dan, and so did his next, the Orioles' Hank Peters. “They saw something in me,” Dan explains. “Those were the guys who really gave me a chance.” His ensuing career in Major League Baseball is storied. For more than three decades, he spent 200 days per year on the road while raising three children with his wife of 32 years, Jackie. “If I could do anything over,” Dan says, “it would be to have better work-life balance. Everything I’ve achieved is due to Jackie. She saw my passion for my career, and she supported me in every way. She raised our three kids—Chris, 31, a Dartmouth graduate, Lexie, 27, a Vanderbilt graduate who was just married in February at Boca Grande’s Gasparilla Inn, and Jack, 20, a sophomore baseball player at the University of Texas—to be the wonderful people that they are. That they are such great kids is absolutely due to her.” For her part, Jackie has a slightly different take. “While I appreciate Dan giving me all the credit,” Jackie says, “if you ask our kids, they’ll tell you they felt Dan’s presence all the time. He’d call us throughout the day to check in with us when he was on the road. He was an amazing father. Yes, there were many evenings that I packed the kids up and drove them to the stadium so they could see him, but they didn’t mind because they loved getting to do that and see a ballgame!” And now Dan gets to work with his kids. Based on an idea he had around 2016, and starting in earnest when his son Chris retired from his own six-year minor league baseball career in 2018, Dan and Chris launched WIN Reality, a VR program focused on improving baseball players’ hitting.

Chris leads all the company’s operations as CEO. Daughter Lexie now handles the company’s social media. The company has grown under Chris’s leadership to include more than 50 employees, and with their Oculus-based hitting program now being used by most MLB teams and over 200 colleges and major success in sight, Dan will likely have to learn how to be humble all over again. “There are two types of people in sports,” Dan says and laughs. “Those who are humble, and those who are about to be. In my career as a general manager, I really learned what it was like to live alone on an island. I was responsible for 150 people and I got a grade every single day in the form of a win or a loss. It teaches you resiliency. Our company name comes from something I used in player development—‘What’s Important Now’. I’d tell my players, ‘Worry about what you can work on in the present, and the future will take care of itself.’ I learned that though I was ultimately responsible for the losses, I was really responsible for developing all the players and staff into being their best versions of themselves. Working with my children now is utterly wonderful. I fully believe that Chris will be recognized as one of the nation’s best CEOs under 40 based on

Dan, Jackie, Lexie and Chris at the Cleveland Indians' stadium.

the work he’s done with WIN Reality and the success that we are having.” A true tech startup, Win Reality is based in Austin, Texas, where many virtual reality developers are located. The company began in a simple 1,000 sq. ft. office with Chris putting in countless hours of work. “Now we have really grown,” Dan explains. “It has the feeling of one of those tech ‘unicorns.’ Hitting is all about timing. It’s nearly impossible to approximate game-speed pitching and hitting outside of playing the actual game. WIN Reality’s software allows the user to experience gamespeed pitching in virtual reality. We offer a variety of different drills to allow the user to see where their hitting measures in an average of players in their age group. It’s amazing where Chris has taken the company as CEO. And we have only penetrated 15-20% of the available market!” Winreality.com.

“I have noticed three qualities that all good executives possess,” says Dan O’Dowd. “First, they process thought quickly. Second, they are creative thinkers. And third, they are world class problem solvers.”

Joe Z. Knows Style THE MASTER STYLIST NOW CALLS VENICE’S CIAO BELLA SALON HOME AFTER A FOUR DECADE CAREER THAT TOOK HIM ALL OVER THE WORLD

Joe Zottola has been styling men's and women's hair for four decades. Here, he styles a client at Venice's Ciao Bella Salon.

Joe has trained at famous studios in New York, London, Toronto and elsewhere.

To people in the know, Joe Zottola is one of the nicest guys in town. He’s also amazingly talented at styling hair. The son of hardworking Italian immigrants, Joe was born and raised in Pittsburgh, where he followed his older cousins into the hair business at age 16. He opened his first salon when he was just 22, ‘Salon Z,’ which he operated in Pittsburgh for 36 years and grew to include 14 stylists. At the same time, he also founded a second salon aimed at strictly men and boys called ‘Game Day Haircuts.’ “I have always loved doing hair, especially coloring women’s hair,” Joe says now at Venice’s Ciao Bella Salon, where he’s been styling for the past three years. “I love making people happy with the way they look. Communication is the most important part of taking care of clients. You learn about your clients’ lives and celebrate their milestones with them. I love the personal aspect of doing hair. This business has been very good to me.” Grandfather to two-year-old Adam, and father to adult children Justine (Adam’s mother) and Joe Jr., Joe has trained all over the world,

from London, to New York, to Toronto, at famous studios like Vidal Sassoon, Toni & Guy, and Jingles International. His four-decade career has seen him master all sorts of trends and styles. “I really loved the 80’s,” Joe says. “There were so many creative things going on. Today’s styles are relaxed, anything goes, there’s no right or wrong. We used to have a seasonal clientele here, but with all the growth we have had, it isn’t like that anymore. We are seeing more permanent people, and younger people.” For men, Joe stresses the importance of investing in their hair by regularly going to an experienced stylist. “It makes a difference in finding someone who is seasoned and educated in what they do,” Joes says. “People notice the quality of the style. It certainly helps with the individual’s confidence. Men should get styled once a month. If they are willing to try new things and trust their stylist, they should take a risk on a different style every now and again.” 2161 Tamiami Trail South, Venice. 941.220.7112, Vagaro.com/ciaobella3.

A FATHER’S DAY DISH Allego Bistro's Executive Chef Frank Rossitto has been making fine Italian food since he was 14 years old.

Allegro Bistro’s Executive Chef Frank Rossitto isn’t just the star of the famed Venice eatery’s kitchen, he’s also family. Married to Maria, the sister of Allegro Bistro’s owner Nella Valenti, for almost 40 years, Frank grew up cooking since age 14—his father owned the Paradiso Restaurant in their native Hartford, Connecticut. “Maria worked at a pastry shop and I used to go in there and she always would smile,” Frank says. “So one day I asked her, ‘Do you like me?’ And she said, ‘Yeah.’ I asked her if she wanted to go out, and that was it. We were both 16. We got married at 19.” The couple have two adult sons, Antonio and Michael. Chef Frank has the same passion for cooking as he had when he began his career. “It’s all about creating great food and seeing people enjoy it.”

directions: “I start with a pan at medium heat,” Chef Frank says. “Melt a little bit of butter in there. Then cook the onions and the mushrooms until they are sautéed. Throw in the shrimp and scallops and sautée them as well. Put in a bit of fresh chopped garlic, salt, pepper, garlic powder and a little bit of oregano. Add some white wine. Reduce the sauce a bit. Hit it with fresh tomato sauce, a little cream, a scoop of grated cheese, let it cook. Then toss it with some freshly made al dente spaghetti. Finish with grated cheese and chopped parsley. People just love it.” Chef Frank’s tips on cooking pasta al dente, i.e. properly: “You have to have hot water; salty water like seawater,” Chef Frank says. “Let the water come to a hot, rolling boil, and then put in the pasta. It has to be a really hot boil, never a simmer. If you cook your pasta in a simmer, it will come out like goo and stick all together. It will look like murky water filled with starch. It won’t even taste good, you’ll have to throw it away. When you have your pasta in that rolling boil, stir it every couple of minutes so it doesn’t clump up. Too much water isn’t bad, too little water is the worst. Taste your pasta and when it still has a little bite to it, dump it into a colander, drain it and it’s ready to serve.” 1740 E. The Firm Will Occupy A 4,500-Square-Foot Office in Downtown Wellen, The Social And Shopping Hub For Wellen Park And The Surrounding Region The independently owned and operated Sarasotabased Capstan Financial Consulting Group is expanding to Wellen Park with a 4500 sq ft, second story office in Downtown Wellen. “Downtown Wellen was designed for convenience and bringing restaurants, retail and professional services to the local community,” says Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “We are pleased to announce the addition of Capstan Financial to our growing list of tenants.” Currently under construction, the first phase of Downtown Wellen is expected to open during the fourth quarter of 2022. Capstan Financial has already established a presence in Wellen Park, operating from temporary office space at 19503 S. West Village Parkway Suite A4 until the new building is completed. Managing Partner Matt DePalma says the location will employ about a dozen people and have offices for eight advisors. “We’re looking forward to getting in on the proverbial ground floor and being entrenched in the community for the next 20 to 30 years – and beyond,” says DePalma. “This is a great opportunity to grow with the community. Wellen Park appeals to the hometown approach of Capstan.” Started by DePalma and Bill Marsh in 2010, Capstan is a boutique financial consultancy, managing $1 billion in client assets as of March 2022. The firm provides retirement, estate and education planning, wealth management, investment plans and employee and executive benefits. DePalma said Capstan is currently recruiting advisors and support staff. For more information on Capstan Financial Consulting Group, call 941.477.5300 or visit Capstanfinancial.com.

Downtown Wellen continues to announce new businesses, most recently Kind Vibes Outfitters as its outdoor recreation outfitter offering bicycle, kayak and paddleboard rentals, located on the 80-acre Grand Lake. Additional tenants include Mirabella’s Italian Coastal Cuisine, Oak & Stone, Villani & Co. and Bright Ice. Designed as a vibrant gathering place, Downtown Wellen features the 80-acre lake, retail shops, waterfront dining, pedestrian-friendly streets and public community spaces. It will also have a permanent food truck park, event lawn and Solis Hall for concerts, events and other community gatherings. Nature-inspired features like a children’s playground blending into its surroundings and a hammock grove with a lounge area under a nearly 100-year-old heritage oak tree connect visitors with the outdoors and provide spots for rest and relaxation. A 2.8-mile trail circles the lake, creating opportunities for biking, walking and running. Consistently ranked among the U.S.’s top fastest-selling master planned communities annually by prominent real estate consulting firm RCLCO, Wellen Park offers a mix of residential, commercial and recreational options. The community currently has approximately 9,000 residents, and at full build-out will have more than 50,000 residents and 22,500 homes within its three distinct districts: West Villages, Downtown Wellen and Playmore. For more information about living at Wellen Park, call 941.960.7805, go to Wellenpark.com, or visit the Welcome Center at 12275 Mercado Drive in Venice.
