AUGUST IS A TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. The school bells will be ringing soon, and not long after, the first snowbirds will start coming back home. While the lazy days of strolling the quieter beaches and emptier parks may be drawing to a close, August also brings a great sense of anticipation of our vibrant town getting busy once again. Earlier in the year, we dedicated issues of Venice Lifestyle to the men and the women of our community. In this issue, we celebrate some of our cutest residents: our kids and pets! Don’t miss our feature this month on Dr. Matthew and Lisa Corn’s gorgeous new puppy, Pranna, who is being trained as a therapy animal at the Corns’ 65+ Center for Active Aging. Then meet Lucy, a beautiful racing greyhound recently adopted through the nonprofit work of Adoptable “Greythounds” of Florida. Also in this issue, you’ll find Petable Portraits’ Daniele Jones and her amazingly detailed drawings and paintings. And you’ll learn about the work of Venice’s own St. Francis Animal Rescue, which is celebrating 25 years of helping homeless cats. On the kids' side of things, Venice Lifestyle is delighted to offer two reports from

In our "Our Town" feature, we are so pleased to tell the story of our master photographers, Harald and Petra Prion of Venice’s Prion Photography. It is an honor for us every month to feature their lovely photography, and now we also get to highlight them! Cheers to another wonderful month ahead. We hope to see you around town!

“I LIKE TO HEAR STORIES ABOUT THE PETS I PAINT SO I GET TO KNOW THEM A LITTLE AND CAN BRING THEIR PERSONALITIES TO LIFE IN MY ART.”
DANIELE JONES MOVED TO VENICE FOUR YEARS AGO TO BE CLOSER TO HER GRANDCHILDREN. She finds Venice to be “the perfect balance between a small town where everybody knows your Jo
name and a city where you feel anonymous.” She has been making art as long as she can remember. Daniele earned a BFA from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. “In 2007, I was asked if I could do a portrait of a pet. Shortly after, my partner, Joe, and I put together a website, and I got our first order in a week,” Daniele says. “I like to hear stories about the pets I paint so I get to know them a little and can bring their personalities to life in my art.” Daniele works in graphite or charcoal for black-and-white art, as well as colored pencil and acrylic for color portraits. LUCY
JANET AND BOB DIEHL ARE THE FOUNDERS OF ADOPTABLE “GREYTHOUNDS” OF FLORIDA. Janet and Bob retired to North Port from St. Louis and founded Adoptable “Greythounds” of Florida in 2016. Lucy, pictured here, is one of their dogs. In 2018, Florida voters passed Amendment 13, which ended greyhound racing in the state. More than 8,000 greyhounds will now be retired from racing in Florida. Their nonprofit serves the Venice region, locating foster and adoptive homes for greyhounds. The nonprofit helps prepare racing greyhounds for adoption and life as pets. “When they are retired, they go through a transition period,” says Janet, owner of four greyhounds. “They are used to being around many dogs. After we get dogs from the trainers, we take them to the vet, they are spayed and neutered, their vaccinations are made current, and then they go to foster homes where they learn about swimming pools, glass doors and other new experiences. We ask $295 as the adoption fee to cover costs.” Greyhounds make great pets, and with a 98% placement rate, the time to adopt a greyhound is right now. “We are working to make sure no dog is left behind,” Janet says. “We can put you in touch with the dog’s former trainer. The trainers are more than happy to answer questions about the dog’s life because they care. Adoptive parents will receive papers from the National Greyhound Association. The bloodlines go back to the early 1800s.” ADOPTABLE “GREYTHOUNDS” OF FLORIDA 573.535.4812, AdoptableGreyhoundsOfFlorida.com

LISA AND TREVOR REDVERS ADOPTED LUCY. “It’s always been important for us to rescue dogs,” Lisa says. “Lucy was regal and elegant. Her first week was a real adjustment. She had never lived in a home. We committed to loving her. After about a week and a half, she started to play with us and our other dog, Rosie. One night she woke us up in the middle of the night. She was twisting herself in the draperies like playing hide and seek. Little things scared her, like the icemaker.” Greyhounds have a temperament that suits older people well. “Greyhounds are goofy. Lucy will climb on the ottoman like a goat,” Lisa says. “We call her ‘Loopy.’ They have a sense of humor like no other dog. They’re couch potatoes. They need short bursts of energetic activity but do well even in smaller homes. They are great for older people because they are gentle creatures that need a lot of downtime.” Greyhounds are loyal and loving. “Lucy is one of the most beautiful things that has ever happened in our lives,” Lisa says. “She loves us as much as we love her. She just never had a home before. She did not know what to do, did not know what was expected of her. If you are thinking of adopting, speak with people who have greyhounds. “Greythounds” of Florida really helped us understand how to help Lucy settle in. She has added so much to our lives.”

Tami Treadway and Pasha of Sarasota K9 Search & Rescue
TAMI TREADWAY, PICTURED WITH PASHA, IS A FOUNDER AND CURRENT TEAM LEADER OF THE NONPROFIT SARASOTA K9 SEARCH & RESCUE. “Sarasota K9 Search & Rescue began 23 years ago,” Tami says. “We assist law enforcement locally, nationally, and internationally with tracking and trailing. We help find people with Alzheimer’s who have wandered away from their care facilities, people lost in the woods, missing children. We currently have 27 dogs who are either deployable or in training. My dog, Pasha, is a 7 1/2-year-old German shepherd. She’s one of two dogs in the world who has passed GA K9’s Level 4 training.” Pasha’s special temperament makes her exceptionally good at her job. “Pasha’s one of the best dogs in terms of friendliness with people that I have ever had,” says Tami, who also owns three Belgian Malinoises. “When she’s finding a lost person, she has a double drive to succeed. She’s driven to earn the toy that she knows she will be rewarded with, but she’s also working hard because she loves the praise she’ll get from the people. She enjoys the work.”
PASHA
When she’s not busy rescuing people, Pasha is a loving pet. “Pasha’s over-the-top friendly, to the point that sometimes it’s obnoxious,” Tami says. “‘Pet me! Pet me! Pet me!’ She has a nice demeanor, is great with kids and other dogs. She loves to be outside, to find a stick or rock, and she will entertain herself for hours.” SARASOTA K9 SEARCH & RESCUE Donations and volunteers requested. 941.915.0560, SarasotaK9SAR.net.

VENICE LIFESTYLE’S KIDS FILE REPORTS FROM THE FIELD
from fltohricdaarolina + nor Mason shows off gemstones he mined in North Carolina.
MASON, 6, RECENTLY TRAVELED WITH HIS GRAMMY (OUR PUBLISHER, CHARMAINE TINCHER) HIS PAPA AND K CUP TO NORTH CAROLINA’S APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS TO VISIT FAMILY AND ATTEND HIS COUSIN’S HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. Mason saw mountains and the rivers that tumble through them for the first time. The family drove from Venice to a small town south of Asheville, where they rented a cute cabin and Mason spent lots of time playing with his cousins. “The best part was seeing my cousins,” Mason says. “We saw a really big waterfall. There were river rafters going by. One of the rafters lost his paddle. I couldn’t get it, and they couldn’t get it back because the river was too fast. The weather was nice all the time, not hot like it is here.” Mason also visited a gem mine, where he sifted through a bucket of sand and discovered semi-precious stones. He brought these home as keepsakes. Mason made many memories on his trip and cannot wait to go back to the mountains and visit his cousins again.
“My cousin Cameron was graduating from high school. Everybody got dressed up, and they had fireworks at the end.” “I made an ice cream taco at my aunt’s ice cream shop. I filled a folded waffle cone with mint ice cream, Sour Patch Kids and Oreos. It was the best!” “I played a lot of Super Smash Brothers and got to battle my new friends. They made the wrong choice battling me!” “I went gem mining. You scoop up the sand, put it in a screen, and put it in water. Then you find the gems!” “Being in the car for a long time, you need to bring an iPad.” 22

Tannon, 8, spends his summers in Northern California,
from florida + northern c alifornia
where his champion snowboarder mother grew up at the base of snow-capped Mount Shasta and where his stepfather, Venice Lifestyle’s editorial coordinator, has spent two decades vacationing and fishing. “Northern California is a great place to catch trout,” Tannon says. “I like to go camping, hiking and swimming in the really cold rivers with my family. I also get to visit my grandparents.” For Tannon, Northern California is different from Florida because the mountains are full of trees and trout streams. “I stay in a small town called Dunsmuir, and the river runs right through it,” Tannon says. “I love Florida because I can catch lots of different species of fish. But the fish are easier to catch in California. I have been fishing in Northern California with my grandpa since I was 3 years old, and my stepfather is a great fisherman, too. California is beautiful and so much fun. I love being out on the river.”
“You have to have the right tackle. Hook size matters because not every fish’s mouth is big.” “I use lighter line in California. You need a heavier line in Florida. You might catch a big snook!” “I use nightcrawlers in California. I also tie flies. I tied the ones on my hat.” “I cast a worm, leave the spool open and let the line sit in a whitewater eddy until I get a bite.” “Be careful beside the river. If you slip and fall in, it’s cold and fast.”
Tannon tied the flies on his hat himself.

The shelter works with local veterinarians to provide medical care. Other costs include medicines, food, staffing and transportation. St. Francis has to fundraise continually. On Monday, Aug. 12, St. Francis will be hosting a fundraising dinner at Cassariano Italian Eatery in downtown Venice, part of a series of annual fundraising events. “I have been a volunteer here more than six years,” Marylou Loughrey says. “The things that attracted me to St. Francis and what keeps me volunteering here are twofold. First, the volunteers are appreciated, and they have a sense of belonging. ‘St. Francis is my shelter.’ That is very important to the volunteers whether they are adoption councilors or socializers (volunteers who patiently work with abandoned cats to reacclimatize them to human contact.) The other is that we are truly a rescue. ‘Give me your tired, your poor. You have three legs? Oh yeah, come on in. You have one eye? We’ll deal with it. You have one and a half ears? We will take you. Have you been beaten up or you’re ill? Come on in. Let’s see what we can do to fix you up.’ That is this organization.” Marylou travels 30 miles one way from Lakewood Ranch to volunteer at St. Francis. “I do it because it’s special,” Marylou says. “People who come here love cats, and they understand ‘cattitude’.” Bruce says most of the cats eventually find adoptive homes. The shelter has a Facebook page and a website, but it is really word of mouth that gets information about St. Francis’s cats out to the community since the shelter has operated for so long. “We work on the cats’ behavior to make them adoptable,” says office coordinator and volunteer Ingrid Blokzijl. “It takes a lot of patience. You have to gain their trust; they have to be touched. It’s a long and tedious process. You don’t really see their true personalities until they go to an adoptive home where they can relax.” St. Francis Animal Rescue 1915 S. Tamiami Trail 941.492.6200, StFrancisARFL.org

VENICE IS BLESSED WITH MANY FIRST-RATE ARTISTS. Foremost among them are Harald and Petra Prion, German-educated and -trained photographers who moved to Venice in 2012. Married in 1981, Harald and Petra are a true love story, both in their lives and in their art. “We are better when we are together,” Petra says with a smile. “Harald talks, and I photograph.” “We have always been together for the last 40 years,” Harald says. Trained under a rigorous German system of photography education, Harald’s strengths are in commercial photography, while Petra excels at portraits. An easy-going, friendly couple, the Prions both served demanding photography apprenticeships after completing their graduate studies. Always on the cutting edge of photography technology, the couple moved from film to digital in 2001. Today, Harald has an FAA license to fly photography drones, and Petra has mastered making people comfortable in their well-appointed Venice studio. For the past eight months, the Prions have shot nearly every photograph published in the pages of Venice

The Prions have practiced professional photography for four decades. Their business once grew so large that they had 14 employees in Germany. “We use Macintosh computers,” Harald says, “and we spend most of our time editing and retouching our photographs.” High-end photographers, the Prions have a busy schedule photographing everything from real estate and weddings to
“We show our clients the raw photos, they pick the ones they like, then we retouch them, and the real work begins,” Harald says. HOME HOME
Nicki, thanks again to you and Darrell for all your help in decorating our home on the bay! We were so relieved to have walked into your store after searching everywhere in Southwest Florida for quality coastal furnishings at an affordable price! You and Darrell listened to our thoughts, looked at pictures of our space and made suggestions that were perfect. Your flare for coastal design, quality product and excellent service has made our house a home.
