As we savor the last few weeks of summer, we wrap up this issue with a delightful end-of-summer crab boil idea. It’s the perfect way to gather with friends and family, soaking in the final moments of sunshine and warmth before fall fully takes hold.

We hope this issue inspires you to embrace your unique style and explore the wonderful world of local fashion. Don't forget to tag us in your favorite style moments and summer memories on social media – we love seeing how our vibrant community stays chic and connected.

Our magazine services the communities of Armonk, Bedford, Bedford Hills, Chappaqua, Katonah, Mount Kisco, Pound Ridge and Valhalla.

Executive Vice President, KOSL Building

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BUILDING HIGH-END HOMES?

Building custom homes is an extremely gratifying experience.  All aspects of a project from creative inception to completing the vision have intricate involvement, making each home truly unique for our clients.

WHAT ARE SOME INDUSTRY TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS?

The earlier you engage a builder the more successful your project will be. A credible development company will help guide you in finding the right property, creating idyllic plans, securing required entitlements, and constructing your dream home. A strong builder-client relationship is critical to ensuring a smooth and successful project.

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?

We do our best to appeal to the broad market while remaining unique with our signature KOSL touches. While we build everything from traditional to modern estates, the blending of the two as a Transitional finish seems to strike the best balance. Our unique style is quite distinguishable and is constantly evolving based on client preferences.

WHAT ARE THE INDUSTRY TRENDS RIGHT NOW?

The new luxury is really convenience. Amenities that some consider luxury (radiant floor heat, smart home integration, central vac, wine cellars, etc.) are a standard for us. Blending similar-looking materials to create a uniform feel like a white oak wood floor/millwork accents with silk marble finishes complement each other.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

We currently have three custom projects and two spec projects being built in Scarsdale, Rye, and White Plains. Each project varies in magnitude based on client preferences, all of which are distinct in their own way.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING IN WESTCHESTER?

The beauty of Westchester is its diversity and stability. Its renowned reputation is attributed to the various characteristics and enhancements of different Towns which we are proud to be a part of.

INTRODUCING KAT JAMIESON

Founder of Everyone Loves the Weekend, a new timeless fashion line
PHOTOGRAPHY

14 years ago, Kat Jamieson started her blog 'With Love from Kat,' after working in the fashion industry and living in New York City. After studying interior design in college, Kat realized her ultimate passion was in fashion. She was able to use her blog as a creative outlet tying in her love of fashion, decor, wellness, travel, beauty and so much more.

Flash forward to present day and Kat has written her own book, "Blended" and successfully launched a stunning clothing brand, Everyone Loves the Weekend. A name fitted for the level of style she has created.

Kat, and her husband, Thomas got married 3 years ago in Nantucket and now live in New Canaan. As an avid traveler, Kat has used some of her favorite places she has visited as inspiration for her pieces including Nantucket, Capri and St. Barth. Through each of her designs, you are able to see the intricate details she has worked in, a taste of those stunning destinations.

Upper Westchester Lifestyle spoke with Kat, the creative visionary behind this recently launched brand.

CONTINUED >

UWL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CREATE “EVERYONE LOVES THE WEEKEND” AND WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR BRAND?

KJ: I felt there was a need for quality midi-style dresses that were both timeless and flattering.  I love wearing dresses, they’re so easy to throw on and can be dressed up or down.  I wanted a collection that prioritized beautiful fabric, so I set out to use the finest 100% linen and cotton material I could find!  The collection is full of classic, effortlessly chic pieces that you’ll have for years to come.

I’ve always been extremely creative and had a love of fashion and design. My first job when I was 16 was working at a local clothing boutique, and then from there I became a sales associate at Calypso St. Barth and then Saks. I remember spending my entire paycheck on clothes, I was in heaven being surrounded by beautiful things every day.

UWL: THIS ISSUE IS ALL ABOUT “STYLE” WHAT ARE SOME FASHION TIPS YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE AS WE APPROACH THE FALL?

KJ: Cinch your waist with a thick brown leather belt like the one I’m wearing here. It instantly adds contrast and dimension to an all black or white silhouette. I’m a big fan of re-wearing my clothes.  I do a ton of monochromatic outfits in the fall and then have fun with the accessories to mix it up.  I also love doing a simple head-to-toe black outfit with a saddle color leather bag and Chanel ballet flat. Jackie Kennedy has always been a huge style inspiration for me.  If you look back at photos of her outfits from 50 years ago, they’re still just as stylish today!

Don’t be afraid to wear ivory in the winter. Winter whites are beautiful.

“My

first job when I was 16 was working at a local clothing boutique, and then from there I became a sales associate at Calypso St. Barth and then Saks. I remember spending my entire paycheck on clothes, I was in heaven being surrounded by beautiful things everyday!”

UWL: WHY DO YOU FEEL THIS COMMUNITY IS IMPORTANT AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF IT?

KJ: I’ve been so pleasantly surprised by how inviting the Fairfield County community is.  We’ve loved having our neighbors over for cozy wine nights by the fire and immediately felt at home in the area.  It’s been fun to connect with so many NYC transplants as well as fellow female entrepreneurs.  There’s such a wonderful mix of culture, style, work ethic, and warmth here!

Having a small business isn’t easy, and I’ve been so grateful for the women who have rallied behind me during this launch.  Within the first week, women who I had just met were opening up their yoga studios, homes and boutiques for our trunk shows.  The love and support we’ve felt from this community has been incredible.

HIDDEN GEM

Founded in 2006 in New York City, Odette's journey began with founder Jennifer Sarkilahti, an artist initially drawn to the vibrant painting scene in Manhattan. She soon discovered a new passion that would transform her career and life. "I fell into jewelry design almost by accident," Jennifer recalls.

The Journey of Odette Jewelry from NYC to Bedford

“Each time I see my designs transformed from wax to metal, I still feel a thrill.”

"After earning my MFA in Painting from George Mason University, I was drawn to the vibrant energy of New York City. During that time, I began buying jewelry supplies out of curiosity and started experimenting with assembling pieces."

This exploration evolved into a profound fascination with the lost wax technique, a method that allows for the creation of intricate sculptures in wax, which are then cast into metal. This discovery was the catalyst for the birth of her brand Odette, leading to the establishment of a Brooklyn studio and a decadelong journey of selling jewelry.

Jennifer's artistic background has played a crucial role in her approach to jewelry design. Each piece starts as a sketch, inspired by her surroundings and

experiences. She then meticulously carves the design into wax, refining every detail before it is cast into metal. This process allows her to create intricate and unique pieces that stand out in the world of jewelry.

"Over the years, I've been fortunate to see Odette worn by notable figures like Taylor Swift and Tracee Ellis Ross, which has been amazing," Jennifer shares. "A standout moment for me was when Michelle Obama wore Odette earrings during her book tour for 'Becoming.' It felt like a significant milestone and a validation of the hard work I’ve put into my craft."

The bustling city life eventually gave way to a yearning for tranquility. "While I appreciated the hustle and bustle of city life, my husband and I had two small children which made us seek a quieter

environment," she explains. "We had friends who had moved to the area, and we often visited them on weekends, drawn in by the area’s stunning beauty—it truly felt like a hidden gem."

The move did not cause Jennifer to sever ties with her NYC showroom but instead provided a harmonious work-life balance. While the move to Bedford was primarily driven by a desire for a better quality of life for her family, it also had a profound impact on Odette as a brand.

"The sense of community here is unlike anywhere else I’ve lived," Jennifer notes. "I’m continually meeting interesting people up here and have formed meaningful connections with a group of creative women. Collaborating with them has been incredibly inspiring and has pushed me to think outside the box."

This new setting allowed her to balance her roles as a mother and an artist more effectively, leading to a renewed passion for her work.

Looking to the future, Jennifer envisions expanding Odette's reach while maintaining the integrity and craftsmanship that define the brand. "It’s hard to believe I’ve been making jewelry for 18 years! Each time I see my designs transformed from wax to metal, I still feel a thrill," she admits. Always seeking innovation in the jewelry space, she is excited to continue pushing boundaries, as her creativity drives the brand.

In her free time, Jennifer enjoys spending time in Upper Westchester with her friends and family. You can find her playing tennis, visiting farmers markets, or stopping by some of her favorite local businesses like Folkways, Tavern at Bedford Post Inn, LMNOP, Duchess, Be Well, and Our North.

Stepping into Success

THE JOURNEY OF VANESSA L. SEIDE AND VERY LOVELY SOLES

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, where trends shift rapidly, a brand like Very Lovely Soles stands out. Founded by Vanessa L. Seide, the company is not only known for its stylish footwear but also for its commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. Vanessa’s journey from working for major shoe companies to creating her own brand is a story of passion, resilience, and determination.

Vanessa’s path to founding Very Lovely Soles was shaped by her extensive experience in the footwear industry. “I began my journey working for a well-known shoe company, where I gained extensive knowledge in shoe design, production, and marketing,” she recounts. However, an unexpected layoff became a turning point in her career. Rather than seeing it as a setback, Vanessa viewed it as an opportunity to take control of her professional destiny.

“Driven by the determination to never be in a position where I had to rely on someone else for my professional future, I embarked on the entrepreneurial path,” Vanessa explains. Her vision was clear: to create a brand that offers stylish, high-quality footwear while embodying her commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. This journey, though fulfilling, has also been “incredibly exhausting and scary,” she admits.

The decision to start her own company came during a significant moment in Vanessa’s life. “I was dating someone who had his own successful restaurant. He really put the idea to start my own thing in my head,” she recalls. The pivotal moment happened on a street corner in Geneva, Switzerland—a day she will never forget. “I decided to go for it,” she says with a smile.

Starting Very Lovely Soles was not without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was securing funding. “When I started out, banks were not giving loans to women, especially for fashion and footwear,” Vanessa notes. She relied heavily on her own savings and financial support from family and friends to get her business off the ground.

Choosing a name for her company was a deeply personal decision. “My initials are VLS—Very Lovely Soles. I thought it was fitting,” she explains. This name not only reflects her identity but also encapsulates the essence of her brand.

For Vanessa, the most rewarding aspect of her journey has been the fulfillment of turning her vision into reality. “Seeing my designs come to life and knowing they resonate with customers is immensely gratifying,” she shares. Positive feedback from customers reinforces that she is on the right path.

Moreover, building a brand that aligns with her values has been incredibly rewarding. “I’ve had the opportunity to implement sustainable practices and work with ethical suppliers,” Vanessa proudly states. Creating a team that shares her passion and watching them grow alongside the company is another highlight.

The freedom to make decisions and steer the company in her desired direction has been both liberating and empowering. “It’s this combination of personal and professional growth, along with the positive impact on our customers and the planet, that makes this journey so rewarding,” she reflects.

Vanessa’s design process is a blend of creativity, innovation, and a deep commitment to her customers. “The journey begins with gathering inspiration from various sources, such as current fashion trends, nature, art, and even everyday life,” she explains. Her approach to design is characterized by a “less is more” philosophy, focusing on simplicity and elegance.

“The journey begins with gathering inspiration from various sources, such as current fashion trends, nature, art, and even everyday life.”
“Driven by the determination to never be in a position where I had to rely on someone else for my professional future, I embarked on the entrepreneurial path.”

From sketching and prototyping to material selection and quality control, every step of the design process is meticulously executed. “I source high-quality, sustainable materials that provide durability and comfort,” Vanessa emphasizes. Each pair of shoes undergoes rigorous testing to ensure they meet her high standards.

What sets her designs apart from others on the market is her deep understanding of quality combined with simplicity. “I prioritize simplicity and elegance, ensuring every shoe is crafted with the highest quality materials for durability and style,” she says. Her designs also incorporate extra foam for enhanced comfort, offering a superior wearing experience.

Looking ahead, Vanessa’s primary goal is to keep moving forward. One project she’s excited about is finding a new artist to collaborate with, following the success of a previous collaboration with a local artist.

Balancing the demands of running a business with personal life is a challenge Vanessa continues to navigate. “Each day is so different. I can only say a typical day is always a whirlwind,” she laughs. Prioritizing tasks and accepting that sometimes things will take the back burner has been key to maintaining balance.

In her journey with Very Lovely Soles, Vanessa L. Seide has not only built a brand but also a legacy of quality, sustainability, and ethical practices. Her story is a powerful reminder that with determination and a clear vision, it’s possible to create something truly remarkable.

Sustainability & Style Andy Yu's

A TRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY AND DISTINCT CREATIVITY.

I recently saw Andy Yu appear on the hit Netflix show, Owning Manhattan. Undoubtedly, he was attending a fashion-forward event wearing his "chic-cycled" creations alongside noteworthy friends. He always makes a statement, from what he wears to who he's with and what he's working on.

I originally met Andy during the pandemic through a top stylist at Saks Fifth Avenue and a mutual friend. I was looking to secure an auction item for a fundraiser and our phone introduction led to securing box seats at Madison Square Garden for the charity. Needless to say, I was impressed at how generous he was from the moment we met. Fast forward a couple of years, Andy has invited me to many of his community-driven events that support culture, local brands, and unique businesses. I've had the honor and unique privilege of meeting his family, and friends -- including the noteworthy ones, and I can honestly say that he’s built a wonderful community.

Besides being a people person, what I love most about Andy is his passion and talent for art, fashion, and inclusively. I should also add that he's a great chef and that he knows how to make an exquisite (and delicious) dumpling. I suggest you watch him make them on the hit Roku show, Martha Cooks! As I interviewed him for this article and we spoke about the many projects that he's working on from fashion shows at the UN to high-profile gala events in collaboration with some of the biggest names in fashion worldwide, I was most intrigued by a local space that he is developing on his property in Westchester. A space designed and curated to promote coming together by this talented individual is sure to be unlike anything else.

SB: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE A SPACE TO SHARE FOOD AND ART WITH THE COMMUNITY?

AY: You know I love culture and bringing people together. I find that food is a great gateway and platform for this.

CONTINUED >

From local dumpling pop-ups to entertaining dinner parties at my home with renowned Chefs, I enjoy it all. During the pandemic, we moved to Westchester so that our boys could escape the city and experience country living. We started building the barn and at the time I knew this would be a space to host and entertain. Over the past few years, I’ve developed a new network of friends in the local community and the idea to make this more of a multi-cultural experience started to take shape. I want to celebrate cultures from around the world through food and friends.

SB: SINCE RETIRING FROM A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY YOU’VE TAKEN ON A LOT OF NEW PROJECTS RELATED TO FASHION SUSTAINABILITY. HOW HAS THIS EVOLVED?

AY: Yes, this year has been extremely busy for me and we’re just getting started. I was invited by CCTV network to create a fashion collection showcasing 30 upcycled looks for a very special event that celebrated the Lunar New Year. The event was broadcast all over the world and all major media outlets covered it. Martha Steward and Fern Mallis walked down the runway with me at the end. It was an iconic moment and I was proud to share my culture with New York and the world! This summer I was invited by the UN to execute a similar show with 20 looks during the “International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations”. Through creative expression, art can bring people together, bridging differences and promoting a sense of unity and mutual respect across various cultures. What I am doing now is so much more than fashion, it is sharing and celebrating culture to bring people together. I am also focused on sustainability and preserving nature. I incorporate the elements into what I am doing now and I would say nature and the elements are reflected in my new designs.

“I love culture and bringing people together. I find that food is a great gateway and platform for this.”

SB: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE EVENTS IN THE WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY?

AY: I am a supporter of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts and attend their annual gala. This is a special place and right in our backyard. I also enjoy The Summer Party at The Glass House in New Canaan just over the border and Farm Dinner at the John Jay Homestead. These events are well-curated and support important cultural organizations. I also hosted a “Sew-Stainable” event at the Community Center of Northern Westchester in Katonah. This event was in partnership with the Katonah Museum of Art and Bedford 2030. I highlighted eco-friendly chic styling which has become my signature. A lot of the events I enjoy incorporate nature and preservation.

SB: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT THIS FALL?

AY: I’m currently collaborating with friends in the fashion industry to unite top designers in support of a foundation I started with Unipix Media and CKS Management. Our mission is to support women and children in fashion and art. To raise funds and awareness, we are planning a gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art or a similar prestigious venue. People can stay updated with all the latest on my website (andyyunyc.com) where I share details about the many projects I'm involved in. Additionally, I will begin hosting private events at the barn featuring a chef-tasting series. I envision the space as an immersive experience with music, art, food, and community, showcasing all the things I love.
