A STITCH IN TIME: A TRIBUTE TO SHELBY COUNTY’S QUILTING HISTORY Shelby County Museum and Archives has a collection of quilts dating back to the early 1900s on exhibit. Information is being sought on the historical significance of one quilt in particular—a quilt that has hundreds of signatures and three historical buildings stitched on it. The names seem to link back to residents that lived in the community in and around 1915. The quilt has been nicknamed the “Mystery Quilt.”

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LAND FIRST IN CULINARY COMPETITION Local culinary students at the Shelby County College and Career Center won first place win at this year’s FCCLA State Culinary Competition. to prepare the menu that would persuade the judges to make their decision.

Judges based their verdict on overall appearance, execution of technique, food plating, following the recipe and teamwork.

The team was praised on their superb execution of the dish as well as their remarkable teamwork. Awards included a gold medal and $2,000 scholarship. The team now moves on to compete in the National FCCLA competition held in July in Nashville, Tennessee.

OMMS ROBOTIC TEAM QUALIFIES FOR ELITE COMPETITION The ultimate objective of any robotics team is the opportunity to compete in the VEX Worlds Robotics Competition. As it happens, Oak Mountain Middle School had five teams qualify.

To qualify for this elite competition, students must first build the robot. Once the robot is created, the next step is to sync a joystick for operation. The machine must also operate autonomously (without remote).

A research paper on the STEM topic of Robotics Technology in the Community is the final stage of the competition.

So far, this year, the 16 OMMS Robotic teams have a combined total of 34 awards.Â

Who are you? I'm originally from Akron, Ohio. My family and I moved to Birmingham in the mid-'90s. I went to John Carroll Catholic High School and played soccer and basketball. We won state championships in soccer all four years and once in basketball. I played college soccer at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. What would people be surprised to know about you? They would be surprised that I was adopted, straight from the hospital, by two loving parents. There is a total of eight of us, and seven of us were adopted.

What is your favorite thing about living or working in the Two Eighty area? My favorite thing about working/living in the 280 area is that everything is a short drive away. Anything you need or want to do is close in proximity.

What advice do you have for young men living in this area? Get out of the house. Go out and explore new things and meet new people. You can never have too many friends.

ithin the Two Eighty Lifestyle region, men's grooming trends often are about the total experience of barbershops and salon services. Keeping male looks

fresh and relevant is the goal.

Fade haircuts and hairstyles have been very popular among men, and local stylists predict this trend likely will continue beyond 2017. Fade haircuts generally cater to men with short hair, but more recently guys with medium or long hair have been getting in on the trends with a higher fade.

Fade hairstyles are sometimes also called the military reg. This cut simply means hair tapers from the bottom to the top. Hair at the sides and back is cut as close as possible or desired and fades up into almost any length on top. Typically, one would start with a clipper guard No. 3, and determine where to place the fade line, switching the guard to a No. 2 and eventually to a No. 1 lower on the head. Hair can be neatly styled or given a more texturized, messy look using gel, paste or pomade.

A newer facility to the area, The Vintage Barber Shop in Vestavia Hills, just celebrated their first business anniversary in February. Vintage barber Dustin Varner says current, popular summertime cuts are tight fades, undercuts and textured crew cuts.

"Given Alabama's heat, customers are requesting a lot of undercuts, with hair tight (very short and close to scalps) all the way up the sides and no blends," Varner says. "Some men still leave 2 to 3 inches on top to style, comb over or do a side part."

He says the general taper or fade haircut is still the king of style, but the variations and creativity shown within it differ from year to year.

Mario Kinion, manager of Legends Barbershop in Hoover, says the twoyear trend of longer beards is still going strong. One of the most requested men's hairstyles at the shop is the South of France original haircut, which was made so famous by pop-R&B musical artist and actor Usher Raymond, it's commonly called the “Usher Cut." 22

Michael has spent most of his life on Lake Martin. Growing up in Opelika in the 1960s, both his and his extended family bought second homes on the lake. He spent every summer weekend exploring every inch of Lake Martin - as only a child and then teenager can.

He was also instrumental in the sales and marketing of many of the new numerous national and international awards for being a Top Marketing and Producing REALTOR®. He attributes much of his success to the many great REALTORS® and Brokers that were his mentors over the past 15 years, such as Mickey Phillips, Lee Lester, and John Margeson who have tools and knowledge that he still uses daily.

ne of the smells that remind me of my home is my Aunt Dru's banana

bread. I make this when I want to bring back memories of my childhood, and I am sure it will for you as well.

• 1/2 cup butter or a little more • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 3 bananas finely crushed (for a bit more moist and delicious, try 4 bananas) • 1 1⁄2 cups flour (you can use gluten-free; almond and coconut flour work well) • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt, kosher • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (I use the paste) • 2/3 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Cream together butter and sugar.

2. Add eggs and crushed bananas.

3. Combine well.

4. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla and walnuts.

5. Mix until combined. Do not overmix.

6. Pour into greased and floured loaf pan.

7. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.

8. Keeps well refrigerated, but it will not last long.
