Fall into October

A

ah, can't you just feel it the air, the nice crisp feeling of fall being ushered in? Or in my case, growing up in middle Tennessee around Nashville, we could smell it in the air. In those days tobacco farmers would cure tobacco crops in the barns by a process known as "firing." In today's world, if you Google firing tobacco, it gives you this definition: "Fire curing produces a tobacco low in sugar and high in nicotine. Pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff are fired cure." Either way, if you feel it, or if you have been lucky enough to smell it, I'm sure we are all excited to finally have fall upon us. October is one of the most beautiful times of the year in the Two Eighty area. Mornings are crisp but not cold. Afternoons are pleasantly warm but not obnoxiously hot. October always brings a blaze of color: crimson reds, buttery yellows and pastel pink ribbons. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as a family that has been impacted by this terrible disease, it's a cause we feel particularly compelled to support. There are numerous ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the Two Eighty area. The important thing is to join the fight! This month in Two Eighty Lifestyle we take a look at what it takes to be the best football fan. We also offer suggestions on the ultimate tailgate, and we introduce you to a business that is making sure the athletes in this area are "Better, Faster and Stronger." Until next time, I hope to see you out in the Two Eighty area celebrating and enjoying the change of seasons. Whether it's the temperature, the smell (if you haven't smelled this you need to) or the colors, including pink, enjoy the season.

Michael has spent most of his life on Lake Martin. Growing up in Opelika in the 1960s, both his and his extended family bought second homes on the lake. He spent every summer weekend exploring every inch of Lake Martin - as only a child and then teenager can. After selling his marketing company, he permanently moved to the lake in 2002 and went to work for Russell Lands Real Estate. He has grown to be one of Lake Martin’s premier REALTORS® and prominent leading the Russell Land’s Dadeville office in sales as their top producer. He was also instrumental in the sales and marketing of many of the new numerous national and international awards for being a Top Marketing and Producing REALTOR®. He attributes much of his success to the many great REALTORS® and Brokers that were his mentors over the past 15 years, such as Mickey Phillips, Lee Lester, and John Margeson who have tools and knowledge that he still uses daily.

In 2016, Michael saw a need for a company strongly dedicated to promoting and selling property on the ‘Dadeville/Atlanta side’ of Lake Martin. He formed his own Real Estate Brokerage has grown to be THE top listing brokerage in our market – from Martin Dam to the Highway 280 Bridge.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT BRINGS TOGETHER LAW ENFORCEMENT, COMMUNITY National Night Out 2017 was tons of fun for all ages. The Helena Walmart Neighborhood Market parking lot was filled with fire trucks, police cruisers, ATVs and police Hummers on August 1. This night was designed as a community-building campaign to enhance the relationships between law enforcement partners and their neighbors in the community. This year’s affair had a great turn out. Police officers and firefighters gave out safety tips, free pizza and hot dogs, and there were some great photo ops with the officers, firefighters and their vehicles. Firefighters also demonstrated the proper way to put out a kitchen fire, which is the No. 1 cause of house fires in the United States.

EIGHT TEAMS COMPETE FOR BEST BARBEQUE BUTT IN HELENA On Saturday, July 15, the air was filled with tasty aromas as competitors prepared their best butts. There were eight different teams this year competing for the first-place trophy and the title Best Barbecue Butt in Helena. The event is an annual fundraiser to help support the Miracle League of Helena. This year, $1,892.50 was raised to help the organization. The Que Brothers won the people choice award, and Driveway Boyz BBQ won the judges' award.

fits perfectly into Birmingham’s athletic atmosphere. Located just off of Highway 280, Blackwatch is an athletic training facility with one simple goal in mind: build better people by using the platform of athletics. CEO Randy Beckham, a Troy University alumnus, moved to Birmingham from Orlando, Florida, in 2011. What began as a temporary move for him and his family turned into a permanent stay in the Iron City once Beckham realized that Blackwatch’s vision and values “would be a great fit for the community, the schools and the athletes.” The main focus is growth in strength, power and speed through specifically organized performance and skill training. “An athlete’s going to come in here, and there’s always going to be a plan for them,” Mary Kate Smith, the facility’s director of membership, says. “They’re not just going to come in and work out on their own. They’re always led by coaches, and they’re directed through the workouts, and the workouts are also going to be based on their needs as an athlete.”

ALABAMA FOOTBALL FANS

What's it Take to Become the Best Alabama Football Fan?

ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS HONESTLY: • Have you ever told someone you couldn't make an important event just because there's a football game occurring at that same time? • Do you secretly check up on your football team more than three times a day? • Have you hallucinated about bleeding orange and blue or crimson or green and gold? • Are football items always at the top of your requested personal gifts? • Do you chant football battle cries, such as "War Eagle" or "Go Blazers," when all alone driving? • Are these questions unconsciously making you whisper "Roll Tide?"

If you answered "yes" to any of the aforementioned queries, you might be a revered, Alabama die-hard football fan!! It's widely perceived that Alabama has the highest concentration of college football fans in the United States. Is Alabama college football fandom so intense because the

good number of sports involve the use of a ball. In honor of the sports issue, I'm sharing two sphere-shaped snacks. These fun size appetizers will be a hit with any crowd. Each of these recipes makes 18 bites. My boys loved the chicken bites and had a hard time limiting themselves to three each. For a crowd, you may need to double or triple the batch. We do like it hot, so you may need to adjust the hot sauce if you prefer a tamer bite.

3. Roll balls in coating mixture. 4. Refrigerate if not serving immediately. 5. Before serving, let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes and insert pretzel sticks.

BUFFALO CHICKEN BITES INGREDIENTS

2 cups shredded chicken—rotisserie chicken works well 3 tablespoons hot sauce—I used Tapatio brand 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons chopped chives 2 tablespoons ranch dressing 1 cup flour 2 eggs, beaten 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Cooking spray Ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine chicken, hot sauce, cheese, chives and ranch. Roll into golf ball-sized balls. Refrigerate as you set up dredging station. 3. Use three shallow bowls, fill one with flour, one with the beaten eggs and the third with panko and pepper—mixing the two ingredients to combine. Dip each buffalo chicken ball in flour, then the egg, then the panko mixture. Set the balls about 1” apart on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. Spritz buffalo chicken balls with cooking spray. 4.
