Publisher’s Letter

The magic of an idea... the beginning of the summer season.

June….

Looking back on childhood, memories flood the mind of long, lazy days at the beach, road trips to visit grandparents, and adventurous bike rides. They were also the days we played outside until dinner time and used our imagination to stay entertained. That’s when the ideas came to life!

Tree houses were built, caves were stockpiled with wood for campouts, and Sears & Roebuck models were cut out of the catalog to use as illustrations for a storybook in the making. Plays were written, costumes designed and programs were colored with crayons so when the neighbor's doorbell rang, they could pay a quarter to watch the five minute play on their front lawn. And of course, there was the everlasting lemonade stand that sold whatever was available that day, homemade cookies, freshly picked blackberries and blueberries, or cups of water. The earnings allowed us a trip to the general store in town that boasted rows of glass jars with penny candy. By the end of summer you believed you could accomplish anything!

Looking back, the ideas came to life with the support of the community. The adults supported the children’s endless ideas and the children knew they needed each other to accomplish the idea of the day. The result was a prosperous and proud community.

The idea behind Tulsa Lifestyle is “Inspired by Community.” Half of the publication brings you stories about people, businesses and causes in the Tulsa community. The other half of the publication is about ideas that have come alive from those that live next to you or down the street. They are our advertisers. This combination, along with support from our readers, allows us all to be part of a prosperous and proud Tulsa community.

Enjoy this month’s publication about the home. It may possibly invigorate some ideas that you can follow up on during the lazy days of summer.

Around Town CHECK OUT ONE OF TULSA’S FIRST LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES Congratulations to St. John's Episcopal Church for creating the book exchange for their community. The church designed their library to look like a little church. The idea originated with a group of women who come together to do needlework and end up talking about books. Dorian Kurin, an architect in the parish, volunteered to design and build the little library, with the traditional red doors you see on all Episcopal churches. The Little Free Library is on the east side of St. John's House at the corner of 41st Street and Atlanta Place. You can see it, and drop off or pick up free books, at their address at 4200 S. ALEX'S LEMONADE DAYS RETURNS Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, invites volunteers across the country to take a stand against childhood cancer when Alex’s Lemonade Days returns, June 12-14.

ALSF’s National Lemonade Days began in 2004 when Alex Scott set her sights on raising $1 million to fight childhood cancer, including hers. Alex invited volunteers to join her in hosting lemonade stands to help achieve her goal $1 and one lemonade stand at a time. Through the help of these volunteers, Alex would reach her goal before losing her life to cancer in August of that year. Each June, the weekend before Father’s Day, supporters ev12

They looked at all the senior living homes throughout the United States to identify which ones provide the best experience to residents. According to them, none of the award winners were chosen based on arbitrary metrics of quality. If they received an award, it’s because actual residents and their loved ones were happy enough with their experiences to say so.

The website has more than 74,000 reviews and ratings from users, adding up to a lot of valuable data that paints a picture of the varying quality of the country’s different senior living options. To qualify, each of the winners earned a rating of 4.5 stars or higher – a difficult enough standard that only the top 1 percent of the facilities nationwide managed it.

The Tulsa area’s two winners are Sunrise River Road and Sterling House of Broken Arrow.

Tips for a Smooth Mortgage Process ARTICLE MAX FROST

T

he mortgage application process can be a stressful one. Our friends at First Mortgage Company offer these tips to help make the process as smooth as possible.

BEFORE YOU BUY:

• Make a personal budget ahead of time to make sure you know what payments you are comfortable with.

• Meet with a loan officer and get pre-approved in advance of shopping for the home.

DURING LOAN APPLICATION:

• Check your email/mail often to ensure prompt receipt of time-sensitive documents or requests for information. Delaying their acknowledgement and return could delay your appraisal, approval and/or closing.

• Be prompt in providing any requested documentation.

• Always contact your loan officer if you’re making any changes to your financial picture to ensure that it will not alter your loan request. This includes changes of employment and shopping for and/or incurring additional credit.

• Keep all paystubs and bank statements that come in after initial application readily available should more recent documentation be needed.

• Contact your loan officer if you’re making any large non-payroll deposits so that they can walk you through what documentation may be required to source these assets.

• Before you transfer assets for your closing, talk to your loan officer to make sure that you obtain the proper documentation on that paper trail, should it be needed later.

• If you’re not closing for more than 90 days, your entire credit package will need to be updated.

Try not to allow any new credit inquiries on your credit report, which can lower your credit scores.

• A new copy of your credit report may be pulled within 72 hours prior to closing; any changes will require explanations and could result in your loan being delayed.

• If you make any changes regarding the details of your loan, such as the source of your down payment funds, the amount of your down payment, change of insurance agent, etc., please contact your loan officer immediately to avoid last-minute complications and violations to the guidelines of the loan program.

I

f the idea of longer, warmer days has you reaching for the tongs, it’s time to get your grilling game on before the season is in full swing.

Serving family and friends the most mouth-watering grilled entrees with ease requires a little know-how and a few crowd-pleasing recipes. From versatile chicken to hearty ribs to tender seafood, it’s never been more fun to incorporate new flavors into grilled cuisine.

For the best results on the grill, keep these tips in mind: · A grill is not an oven, so don’t walk away from it when it’s on. Organize what you’ll need ahead of time; no running back and forth. · Always scrape hot grill grates clean with a wire brush so food will release more easily. Before cooking, try using tongs to dip paper towels lightly into oil and swipe over the grates. · If the meat or skin sticks, it’s not ready to be turned.

Let it sit for another minute or two. · Try chicken thighs, which have a deeper, richer flavor than breast meat. · The pork tenderloin can withstand the dry heat of the grill and stay moist. · Salmon, tuna and swordfish steaks grill well because they are thick and crumble less than other types of fish. · A safe inside temperature for ground beef is 160°F; medium steaks is 140°F. Heat poultry to 165°F and whole cuts like breasts to 170°F. Medium pork should be 150°F. Seafood should be 145°F. · For maximum flavor and juiciness, let meat rest 5-10 minutes before cutting or serving.

MOLASSES APPLE BUTTER BBQ SAUCE FOR CHICKEN

Servings: 4 For up to 2 pounds of chicken 1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 1/4 cup molasses 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Mix all ingredients in medium bowl. Brush sauce over chicken in the final 5 minutes of grilling. Additional sauce can be served at the table.

CITRUS APPLE BUTTER GLAZE FOR SEAFOOD

Servings: 4 For up to 4 fish fillets or 2 pounds of shrimp 1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 2 tablespoons orange juice 2 tablespoons lime juice Mix all ingredients in medium bowl. Cook one side of seafood (skin side down). Brush glaze generously on top. Flip seafood and cook until done. Discard any remaining sauce.

ASIAN APPLE BUTTER GRILLING SAUCE FOR PORK

Servings: 4 For up to 2 pounds of pork tenderloin or ribs 1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 1/4 cup Musselman’s Apple Cider Vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons honey 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper Mix all ingredients in medium bowl. Lightly brush or mop sauce over pork during entire grilling time, so sauce slowly cooks into pork.

Discard any remaining sauce.

The annual event is presented by the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa, a not-for-profit, professional trade organization. Its more than 900 professional members must meet stringent requirements, including customer and professional references, insurance certification, and adhere to a strict code of ethics.

Jaime Christensen, director of marketing and public relations for the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa says, "The Tulsa area is seeing continued growth and housing starts are on the rise."

Indeed, one of the hottest areas is the chic downtown district exploding with unique home choices. It's one of the areas Christensen is most excited about for this year's tour.

"The condominiums and townhouses in downtown Tulsa will be on the Parade, including the new, upscale Urban8 development in the east village," Christensen says. "This event offers consumers a variety of housing options and is truly an event for everyone, from young couples about to start a family, to empty-nesters looking to downsize."

In addition to individual homes, Christensen says the Parade of Homes will highlight five communities and host two twilight tours this year—one in Stone Canyon in Owasso on Tuesday, June 16, and the other in Yorktown in Jenks on Thursday, June 18. The extended hours are from 6 -9 p.m. to allow those who can't make it during the day to spend more time enjoying the homes.

Audi Q5 Diesel has Fuel Economy and Performance ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

C

lean diesel power appeals to drivers on two levels: performance and fuel economy. Audi’s midsize utility vehicle, the Q5, is available with five powertrains, ranging from a 2.0-liter turbo to the supercharged V-6 in the sporty SQ5, but the one that catches my eye is the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6.

Sure, the 354 horsepower in the SQ5 has addictive acceleration, yet the TDI clean diesel engine delivers more torque than any engine in the lineup. Torque is the force that pushes you back when you mash the throttle, and the diesel steps away from a stop with a satisfying lunge. The TDI scoots to 60 miles per hour only 1.4 seconds slower than the hot SQ5, but its value is the fact that it has a highway mileage rating of 31 miles per gallon versus 24 for the SQ5. I submit that most of us would trade mileage for a fractionally slower acceleration.

Diesels used to be loud and smelly, but the current crop of clean diesels is neither. In fact, if you didn’t know this was a diesel you couldn’t tell by listening. The Q5 TDI has a base price of $47,000.

That’s at least $4,000 less than the SQ5. The Q5 is an ideal size if you don’t need three-row seating. It slips through urban traffic as easily as a midsize sedan, yet you sit higher and have a better view of the road. The diesel is backed by an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that can be shifted manually with steering-wheel paddles. A quick burst of power only takes a flip of the paddle shifter. After a few seconds, the transmission reverts to automatic mode.

Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system divides power from side to side and front to back as conditions require. That means the wheels with the most grip get the most power. That’s handy on slippery surfaces, of course, but also on dry pavement when driving briskly. The test car’s 20-inch wheels and summer tires would not do well in ice and snow, so winter tires are probably in order. In spite of its taller ride height, the TDI handles more like 26

a sedan than a utility vehicle. The ride is firm, and the brakes are strong and powerful. The blind-spot warning system has yellow lights in the side of the outside mirrors.

The Q5’s interior is well designed and executed. The combination of brushed aluminum, soft-touch surfaces and optional piano black trim is inviting.

The sculpted front sport seats were supportive and comfortable. Wind and road noise was not intrusive at highway speeds, and the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system with 14 speakers has excellent sound.

PRICE The base price of the test car was $47,000. Options

included the prestige package of blind-spot warning system, Bang & Olufsen sound system, navigation, rear view camera and Audi connect. The exclusive package includes Nappa leather and piano black inlays. Sport front seats, 20-inch wheels and summer tires round out the pricing. The sticker price was $62,025.

WARRANTY Four years or 50,000 miles. The first scheduled

maintenance, at 5,000 miles or 12 months, is free.

O

ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process.

She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like the birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals at each other's homes, playing cards as couples, we’d pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her miniCooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends.

That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows.
