February Love Local Issue I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our community. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The seventy-one-year romance between Phil and Emily Wood began with exchanging glances in autumn 1941 at church in Summit, NJ. The sixteen-year-old high school seniors were also witnessing Hitler rolling through Europe via newsreels and newspapers. Communication and commitment became the core of their relationship that carried them through the rest of their lives. After high school graduation Emily worked a summer job doing piece work in a zipper factory producing fasteners for military use before entering Smith College. Phil followed his father and brother, classes of 1915 and 1942, to Princeton. That summer before college brought a few casual dates with Phil in Chatham. In the fall Emily received an invitation from Phil to attend a football weekend at Princeton. They kissed for the first time by the gothic tower of the Graduate School under a full moon. In December 1942, Phil came to a Charity Ball at Smith bringing several Princeton friends for Emily’s Smith friends. Letters were their main communication while in college sharing details of their studies, Phil’s participation in a prank to remove the clapper from a campus bell, and their growing love. When Phil wrote he would soon be called for military service, he talked about how much he would miss her but said they were too young to marry. He also didn’t want to subject Emily to the life of a soldier’s wife. During training and after deployment with the 86th Infantry 10th Mountain Division, Phil wrote her

He received a furlough in August 1944 where they were engaged at a family party. While in New York City to get her ring, Emily fainted when it was put on her finger. Emily documented their inspirational life story in her 2015 book, “It Was Magic” available on Amazon.

I did well in Los Angeles and became a SAG/AFTRA member. But my father passed away while I was in California, and he always wanted me to go on to an advanced degree. I really missed academia, too, so I continued acting but worked on advanced degrees at the same time. I got a master's in physiological sciences and that led me to a master's in behavioral neuroscience. I began studying toward my Ph.D. and enjoyed my medical classes so much that I decided I wanted to be a physician. I picked up my headshots from my agent and moved to Chicago for medical school. WHAT LED YOU TO START YOUR OWN CLINIC? AND HOW DOES YOUR EXPERIENCE IN SO MANY OTHER FIELDS HELP INFORM YOUR WORK WITH PATIENTS NOW? I love academia – I guess that’s how I became double board certified in Internal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. I believe in the physician-patient relationship and cling to the old, personal ways of medical practice rather than those of the big practices. I love the autonomy, and I’m able to spend more time with my patients. This is what led a few of us to leave our larger practices and move to our own multi-specialty clinic.

WHAT CONCERNS DO YOU MOST OFTEN SEE PATIENTS COME IN WITH? In practice, I have come across a few conditions that really don’t have great modes of treatment, like vaginal atrophy, lichen sclerosis, vaginal dryness, and dyspareunia. These can eventually plague relationships and be causes of real concern. Long before “Killers of the Flower Moon" was a sensation, in fact, decades before author David Grann had even penned its first word, someone else had begun writing about the Osage. She was someone who cared not for the prospect of a bestseller, but only for the hope of writing a story worthy of telling. And telling that story would itself become a story all its own. It would be over forty years in the making. To put that much time in perspective, this is the same span of time as ten presidential terms or 14,610 days. Although not every one of those days was dedicated to writing what would eventually become the book “Head of the Household,” not one day passed without thoughts about it. It was an intense labor of love from a woman who didn’t consider herself a writer, but a granddaughter in awe of her grandmother’s life that she felt the world should know about. Not a famous woman, this subject matter. But the life of a lady who loved, who lost, and who never let the losses take her love of life and family. She was an Osage woman who, as a child, was taken from her family and shipped off to a faraway boarding school run by the white man. In addition, she gave birth to fourteen children from two marriages – one arranged to an older man. This lady had experienced wealth from Osage oil money and poverty during the Great Depression. And even owned a movie studio in Hollywood for a time. And as though straight out of a movie, she even ran off with a ranch hand with whom she fell in love. Through it all, a rebel who followed her heart, even when it cost her dearly. But to this granddaughter and aspiring author who devoted so much time to a book about this lady, she wasn’t even sure anyone would publish it, let alone read it.

An entire adult lifetime this author spent researching family history and her Osage culture. With countless phone conversations, emails, marked book passages, sticky notes of information, and meetings with others knowledgeable about the Osage, she would become an expert with credentials that college degrees cannot provide, and scholars would envy. All the while building relationships and friendships that transcend bloodlines and cultures with many whom she felt were more educated and knowledgeable. And, in her humility and unbeknownst to her, it was she who had impressed others with her talents, drive, and knowledge of a complex people with a difficult history. To her, however, it was frustrating to tell this story without the skillset she believed writers should have. Moments of insecurity crying out to God, “Why me? Why have I been chosen to write this when so many others are more qualified?” were part of the process as she experienced moments of hopelessness accompanied by tears of momentary defeat when the process became difficult and the task too arduous. But those moments always passed, and she would resume what she knew was one of her life callings. A reassuring word or a solution to a problem would eventually come. There was always an answer and hope found in God and family. Poring over historical documents or conversing with just the right person always provided her with exactly what she needed to push her over the hurdle to pen yet another chapter. The years rolled by. So, what was started by a young middle-aged woman full of energy and fervor ended with a frail and aging senior ever closer to her own mortality. The only thing remaining the same between these two points in time was the conviction in her heart CONTINUED >

to tell a story. Every closed door for forty years upon which she had knocked had been opened to her in only ways God could have opened. She knew it, too. Every moment of lacking confidence, each hour of confusion as to how to proceed when she felt lost, and each overwhelming obstacle had been overcome so more words could come for this story that only she could tell. Unknown to any of us who saw this journey she was on, there was something else within the pages of that book. Its completion ultimately revealed that it contained not one, but two stories: the one unfolding within the pages, and a hidden one of struggle and uncertainty by a woman who devoted half of her life to telling a story that no one else knew to tell. In many ways, these two main characters are kindred spirits whose lives were entangled in a cosmic novel written by a Divine author that neither knew was being written. It has essentially become the story of two women who shared struggle, despair, and unfairness in a world they could not control. And yet, never gave up on themselves regardless of their circumstances, each adding new chapters to a book of life that they made their own. The name Sammie Dennison Harmon is listed as the author of this life’s work. But to me, this author will always be Mom. My siblings and I witnessed the forty years it took Mom to write this book. The frustrations and celebrations were part of our - and eventually our children’s - lives. We laid her to rest only a few days after her book was published. She never held a copy of the completed work that had been such a part of her life or knew the joy of

signing one for someone. However, she felt the pride of seeing her book on Amazon and the honor of ‘Top New Release in Native American Literature’ it received. But to her, the greatest success was knowing her supporters had never given up on her. After forty years, and when it mattered most, they showed that support with multiple book purchases. My mother’s entire life revolved around her family and friends. They always came first. Her book was always left idle when it came to their needs and wants. It is no wonder it took so long to complete. Her children and grandchildren were witness to this matriarch of a huge family that grew to include everyone she ever met. And she never failed to be worthy of that title by her generosity and time devoted to family. I do not feel the irony is lost on the very name of her book titled some forty years ago would be exactly what she herself would become, “Head of the Household.” It is widely believed among her family that the illness that took her life should have taken her earlier due to its volatile nature. But the cosmic author would not end His novel without a proper conclusion. No ending is complete without the perfect resolution. And in His ending, he allowed Sammie Dennison Harmon the honor of penning the last sentence, the last words of His Divine story. They were the words that took a lifetime to say: “I told you I wouldn’t leave this earth until this damn book was finished! BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.
