LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Kathy Slemp | kslemp@citylifestyle.com CONTR IBUTING WR ITER S

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Tulsa City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but instead offered some fun things to try that are a little healthier and a nearby staycation for physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

The Importance of Tracing Assets in a Divorce Case Tracing separate property or assets in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage. They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed. The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts before marriage argues that the pre-marital por-

tion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce. The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage. At a minimum, parties may need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determine the amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage. In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank

accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies, and other assets where a party might have built up cash value before marriage. In some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted before getting married. The Mocktail Movement T H E Z E R O - P R O O F C R A F T C O C K TA I L T R E N D I S H E R E T O S TAY

An increased awareness of health and wellness has consumers drinking 33% fewer alcoholic beverages, according to an October 2021 report from Nielsen IQ. But they still want to socialize at a bar or restaurant with friends. Today's mocktails are much more than virgin versions of popular cocktails. Ashley Porter, Bar Manager at NOLA’s Creole & Cocktails says the availability of higher quality ingredients such as premium distilled non-alcoholic spirits and fresh house-made juices and syrups creates a luxury experience for their customers.

THE SE A SON OF ENG AGEMEN T A GUI DE TO PLA N N IN G YOUR SP E CIAL DAY

Love is in the air! With the stress of the holidays behind us and Valentine’s Day nearing, now is the time to start planning your special day and enjoying all the milestones that come with the process. For most couples, engagement is the shortest period of time spent together, and though it can be hectic, it’s a special chapter that won’t come again. As you finally begin planning your wedding, the long to-do lists may be daunting. But if you start early and take it piece by piece, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy each step in the journey toward life together!

FIRST: FIND THE PERFECT VENUE AND DATE When you start planning, it’s most important to choose your venue first, so that you can finalize your date and start building the event around it. Have a special date in mind? Talk to several venues to find out if it’s available! If your dates are flexible, start by narrowing things down to a specific season or month for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Then you’ll be able to explore dates with a venue. And if you haven’t yet found your dream venue, set up a tour (or multiple) to find one that accommodates your style as a couple. Book your date before taking on the details!

SECOND: VENDORS, VENDORS, VENDORS After you’ve booked your venue and finalized your date, it’s time to start searching for vendors. From photographers and florists to caterers and coordinators, weddings are made up of a lot of moving parts. They each play a role in creating your wedding’s atmosphere, so it’s important to consider what kind of wedding style you envision. Are you going for dramatic and dark? Bright and airy? Moody and colorful? Pinterest will become you and your bride or groom-to-be's best friend at this stage of your wedding planning experience. Once you’ve found your dream wedding style, you’ll be able to choose vendors that fit into your aesthetic.

THIRD: DON'T FORGET THE DETAILS

Sometimes, the magic is in the details. During this step of the process, you’ll choose your wedding’s colors, finalize invitation designs and guest lists, work with your officiant to map out the ceremony, and create a rough timeline for your reception. This is also the time to think about your must-haves. Is there anything specific you’ve always dreamed of incorporating into your wedding? This is the time to make sure these special additions get included.

FOURTH: YOU’RE ALMOST THERE! You’ve confirmed your final guest count with your vendors. You’ve double and triple-checked your timeline and gotten the go-ahead from your coordinator and photographer. You have reviewed all of your rentals and decided on all of the final little decor, table setting, and floral details. On the week of your wedding, you’ll go to the courthouse to get your marriage license and keep it somewhere safe, where it absolutely won’t be lost or forgotten. Then relax and savor your last few special days together as fiancés - you are ready for the big day!

SAVORING THE FLAVORS OF ANNIE’S EXTRACTS

ARTICLE BY JOE HARWELL

28

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MCRUIZ PHOTOGRAPHY

FANTASTIC FLAVORS FOR A FANTASTIC WORLD

Annie Hartwig is a runner, setting the pace for everything she does in life. She’s a mom of three, wife, volunteer, gardener, inventor, entrepreneur, and marketer of a growing line of food and beverage extracts. Describing herself as ‘creative and crafty’ with a degree in marketing, Annie began making vanilla extract ten years ago. “I made vanilla at Christmas for family and friends who brought the bottles back for refills throughout the year. Since vanilla was such a hit, I began to wonder what other flavors I could create.” The pandemic led to a year of virtual schooling for her children. “Virtual schooling was much harder than I thought it would be and I needed a creative outlet. I often worked late at night creating new flavors while my three children and husband slept.” Annie’s Extracts began in early 2022 and continues to grow. Even after scaling to a business, Annie maintains a very personal relationship with customers and store owners. “Because my flavors began as gifts for family and friends, I strive to maintain that same personal touch with every customer and business owner I work with.”

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Wholesale is important to Annie. “It is an honor to be part of the small business community in Tulsa. This supportive and unique group of business owners cares deeply for one another and loves to celebrate each other’s successes.” Today, Annie’s Extracts can be found online or in the following Tulsa Area stores: Primo’s Fine Wine and Spirits, Bon Broth Bar, Robinson Ranch, Kwenchers, Cecropia Decor, Ida Red, Pure & Simple Market, Queen City and more. Running, intermittent fasting and cutting back on sugar helped Annie lose weight after her third child was born. Adding extracts to water, coffee and tea boost flavor without adding calories or sugar. “Extracts typically need a sweetener to get the full flavor. I leave the sugar out of my flavorings so the customer can decide which sweetener to use. Although stevia and sugar are great, I personally prefer agave or honey.” There are no artificial colors and as many natural, organic and local ingredients as possible used to create these extracts. Annie believes what we eat and drink can be both healthy and delicious. Recipes include vanilla-rose ice cream, homemade coffee creamer, and cinnamon vanilla honey latte. There are refreshing drinks (with cocktail options) like Mint Medley Lemonade, Fresh Basil Gimlet, Prickly Pear Perfect Margarita, Citrus Mimosa Thyme, Christmas At The Cape and many more. Four Ways Straight Teeth Can Improve Your Health

Dr. Mark Davis

A straighter smile leaves you healthier and happier

Getting Started with Invisalign

ARTICLE BY DR. MARK DAVIS Your teeth and jaw are a highly sophisticated mechanism. They work in tandem to help you chew your food and speak properly. But when your teeth are crooked, it makes it harder for your mouth to perform those functions and can also lead to other issues. Along with having a more appealing smile, here are 4 ways that straight teeth can improve your health.

1. BETTER DIGESTION Well-aligned teeth can grind and chew more effectively, allowing you to eat a bigger variety of nutritious foods, instead of soft starchy food. Being able to chew your food properly (into small pieces) also means that you can digest those foods better.

2. HELP PREVENT CAVITIES AND GUM DISEASE Straight teeth are much easier to clean, which means fewer cavities and less dental work needed. Crooked teeth make it harder to floss and your toothbrush may not be reaching all the places it needs to. Straight teeth make it easier for your toothbrush bristles to brush the front and back surfaces of your teeth and they allow for floss to reach the spots in between your teeth.

3. PROTECT YOUR TEETH FROM DAMAGE Misaligned teeth can grind against each other in ways that damage your teeth. Grinding your teeth can wear away your enamel, cause your teeth to become loose, or lead to TMJ problems. TMJ issues can then cause problems chewing and eating certain foods or cause pain when eating.

1

|

At your first visit, Dr. Davis will talk with you about your teeth straightening goals and if you’re a candidate for clear aligners (some people with severe crowding may need traditional braces.) You should also keep in mind that if you need other dental work, you will most likely need to complete that before you start your Invisalign treatment.

2

|

If you’re ready to get started, we will scan your mouth and take lots of pictures of your teeth. We’ll send your scan and pictures off to the lab to fabricate your clear aligners.

3

|

4. STRAIGHT TEETH CAN HELP YOU SPEAK BETTER

When your case comes back, we’ll see you to make sure everything fits correctly. Then you’ll start wearing your aligners 23/7 (only taking them out to eat and clean )

Crooked teeth often cause speech impediments. The tongue needs to be in the right place to be able to produce the correct sounds and when your teeth are crooked, your tongue may not be able to go where it needs to go. Straightening your teeth will put your teeth back to where they need to be and help improve your speech.

If you’re interested in a straighter smile with Invisalign, call us at 918-863-2474 to schedule your consultation.

Braces, or invisible braces like Invisalign, not only straighten your teeth, but help improve your overall health as well. A straighter smile leaves you healthier and happier.
