August - Kids and Pets Issue As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. It seems like yesterday when I sent my oldest off to her first day of kindergarten at the new McAuliffe Elementary in the Union School District but it was decades ago. Horses were grazing in the fields next to the school and all the roads were single lanes. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we’ve highlighted day trips and weekend trips throughout Oklahoma, as you look for one more getaway before school begins. There is a big need for foster families for the numerous animal rescue organizations in the Tulsa metro so we reached out to some teens who shared their love for fostering. We all love our fur babies but what about the emergency veterinarians that take care of them in times of need? We’ve highlighted some of their fur babies! Furst Class Canine Makes House Calls

In 1971, Peter Townshend’s song “Going Mobile”— celebrating freedom and traveling the open road— debuted on The Who’s album, Who’s Next. Forty-six years later, Laney Dicksion celebrated going mobile when she launched Furst Class Canine Mobile Grooming Salon and Spa, LLC, which serves Oklahoma City and its surrounding communities, from Goldsby to Edmond/Arcadia and most everywhere along the I35 corridor, as well as the Greater Tulsa Area from Broken Arrow and Bixby to Owasso. “Interestingly enough,” she said, “we have the largest service area in the state at this time.” Laney chose to go mobile for several reasons. “Personally, I have always preferred ‘express’ type services for the comfort of my clients. Doggies prefer to be close to home and their ‘hoomans’ and definitely don’t enjoy being away for long periods of time,” she said. “I also needed flexibility for my own children, as it’s a high priority for us as a family to be as present as possible for school pickup and drop-off and extracurricular activities,” she added. “Mobile solved all these needs. My pups could have my undivided attention and care close to home, and I could manage my schedule efficiently for my family.” Her choice has proven to be a sound one. “The pups are SO happy and much more content with private one-on-one care, the hoomans are pleased by how convenient the service is and how happy their doggies are, and our stylists love being mobile!” she said. Laney describes Furst Class Canine as “a luxury, all inclusive, one-on-one mobile pet styling service” in which “each pet receives customized care tailored to their individual needs without being limited to certain packages or offerings." “Nose to tail, big or small, we literally do it all—every time, without question,” Laney said. “Furst Class stylists are all highly skilled stylists who can provide any style requested with ease and who pride themselves on being thorough and detailed professionals.”

Furst Class bath services start at $90 while their haircut/groom services start at $115 and go up based on breed, size and service. “There are many mobile grooming services in Oklahoma, as well as storefront salons. However, we believe there is a groomer for every dog and a dog for every groomer. Our niche tends to be for clients wanting high-level grooming work and/or the convenience and attention of mobile,” Laney explains. “What truly sets Furst Class Canine apart, though, is our amazing team of stylists,” she added. “We have an amazingly talented and experienced team of stylists who can provide top-level service regardless of the request. From senior care to fancy flair, they can do it all! And we’re pretty proud of ‘em, if you couldn’t tell. There are simply not enough ways to brag on our team!” Describing her own upbringing as tough (she was raised by a single mother with addiction issues), Laney says her story has parallels to that of Cinderella. “I was lucky to have always had wonderful educators who looked out for me and basically raised me; it helps I was a bit of a nerd,” she said, laughing. “When I was 13, I stumbled into a groom shop looking for summer work and started out sweeping floors and cleaning cages. The rest, as they say, is history. “But I’m not quite done yet accomplishing more and growing this industry,” she continued. “I am a fervent advocate for continuing education, improving customer contact and relations, and stabilizing pricing and quality in the industry nationwide.” Furst Class Canine requires proof of vaccination but has few other limitations. They do not currently accept Chow Chows or Akitas. Feline grooming services are provided in the Tulsa area only. At Salt Plains State Park, you can view the remaining salt from the prehistoric ocean that covered Oklahoma. Walk along miles of nature trails or plan a stay at one of the park’s newly renovated, eco-friendly cabins. The state park also includes Great Salt Plains Lake. The lake is about half as salty as the ocean, and it’s a great place to fish for catfish, saugeye, sand bass, and hybrid striper, watch for migratory birds, or spend time viewing the scenery from a boat or kayak.

The Great Salt Plains Lake is about half as salty as the ocean and it’s a great place to fish.

You can also visit the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, home to more than 300 species of protected birds. The refuge is also known for one of the area’s most popular activities: salt crystal digging. The crystal digging season normally runs from April to October, and visitors can dig for free from sunrise to sunset! It’s a great outing for children. While you’re in the area, you can also see how the pioneers lived at the Sod House Museum in Aline, Oklahoma. It was built in 1894 and is the only sod house left in Oklahoma. The museum also has period farm tools and other artifacts on display.

LAKE MURRAY STATE PARK Lake Murray State Park’s 12,500 acres would make a perfect Oklahoma getaway. There are options for

everyone: you could camp in an RV or tent in the park’s beautiful forests, rent one of their 56 rustic cabins, or, if you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, stay at their modern lodge overlooking the lake. There are plenty of entertainment options, too. Explore Civilian Conservation Corps buildings from the 1930's, play golf on the park’s course with a view of a natural waterfall, ride ATVs or dirt bikes on 1,000 acres of trails, paddleboat on the lake, and more. You can even go on a trail ride with Lake Murray Riding Stables. Lake Murray State Park is a great getaway for everyone – whether you’re wanting a peaceful retreat or a woodsy adventure. CHOCTAW CULTURAL CENTER Learn more about Oklahoma’s roots at the new Choctaw Cultural Center in Durant. The center, which is more than 100,000 square feet, opened in 2021. It includes dynamic exhibitions that span more than 14,000 years of the Choctaw people’s history, displaying ancient artifacts and sharing information about the tribe’s rich history and bright future. Visitors can also explore the cultural center’s Living Village, home to reconstructions of Choctaw dwellings inspired by Nvnih Waiya, a Choctaw ceremonial mound in Mississippi. Children may enjoy the Living Village’s dance and stickball demonstrations. The center also holds Chahta language classes, children’s activities, and more. You can even eat onsite at Champuli Cafe, which serves both traditional Choctaw dishes and innovative, modern versions of traditional cuisine. Stop by the Hvshi gift store before you leave to commemorate your visit. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 5. Visit the Choctaw Cultural Center website for more information.

In Clinton, you can check out the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. Operated by the Oklahoma

Historical Society, the museum features a collection of curios found across the route and guides visitors through a history of transportation in America. It's also known for playing a great soundtrack of classic rock and folk music! Cap off your trip with some fun at Route 66 Bowl in Chandler, where your family or friends can bowl, eat at their on-site restaurant, or play arcade games, laser tag, and mini golf. Pets not pictured: 5 other dogs: Goose, Ringo (Pit Bulls that were abandoned at the AEC), Tuff (Black Labrador); Kaipo, and Iniki (both are Chihuahua/Pekingese mix) and one miniature donkey named Wyatt. “Waylon is the newest addition to our family and came to us after we lost two beloved Aussies over the last several years. He is a gentle giant that loves to play with, and harass, his Chihuahua brother and sister constantly.” “Elliot came to us in 2021 as a retired Hunter-Jumper athlete. He spent the last several years of his career as a teaching horse for younger children who were getting started in Equestrian sports. He enjoys his retirement with his little buddy Wyatt, our ten-year-old miniature donkey.” Dr. McNamara has been a Veterinarian with the Animal Emergency Center since 1997 and has served as the Medical Director since 1998. Sheri McNamara has been with the AEC since 1992 as a Registered Veterinary Nurse. In addition to her duties as a nurse, she has also served as the Business Manager since 2004.

“We have a total of eight dogs. (My wife knows about seven of them. By the time this is published, one more black lab will be part of the family. Surprise!) Of the eight total, six are Labrador Retrievers. The other two are a Weiner dog and a Frenchie. The Labs, Tripp, Coda, Mahomes, Vidalia (Onion), and Bunny spend the fall and winter at a South Dakota hunting lodge. Their days are spent chasing pheasants, ducks, and geese. An occasional crane as well, but only for those dogs (Tripp and Coda) willing to wear protective goggles.” “The picture is of Mahomes and Vidalia holding me still while they posed professionally. Neither of their names was on my granddaughter’s list of acceptable puppy names. However, one granddaughter shares my passion for KC Chiefs football and convinced the other two that Homie was a good compromise.” “Vidalia on the other hand was a much more difficult sell. One morning, coming home from work at 2:30 a.m., I was staying awake by listening to the radio and singing along. I heard a Sammy Kershaw song about a girl named “Vidalia”. I am thinking, what a perfect name for a female dog. I shared my proposed name with the granddaughters. It was not well received and definitely not on the puppy name list.” “ ‘First of all,’ they said, ‘how can you be singing along with a song that you have never heard before? Second, who names a dog at 2:30 in the morning? Grandpa, this is sketch.’ ” “So, in an attempt to be un-sketch, I mentioned the Shriners and Vidalia onion sales. Blank stares from each granddaughter. Then, I tried playing ‘Vidalia’ on my phone.” “‘Flip phones have large numbers grandpa, but can’t play music.’ I finally convinced them to listen to the song on their phones after I spelled Kershaw and Vidalia.” “After listening, they agreed to the name. Okay, not to Vidalia, but Onion. My granddaughters are all about compromise. The oldest dog, Tripp (Q.T. Pie), was supposed to be named Sparkles. The granddaughters think it is spelled ‘Cutie Pie’. Grandpa is also a good compromiser.”

“The pictured cat is Blake. She is a tuxedo domestic shorthair. I adopted her last August from work, at the Animal Emergency Center, where she had been abandoned the year before by her previous owner. She typically only likes mouseshaped toys. She was previously called Linda or Hellen before I adopted her. I also have an eight-month-old western hognose snake named Vasuki (not pictured) that I got about 2 months ago. He likes to burrow most of the time rather than explore but will occasionally chill outside with me and will try to burrow into my sleeve.” Dr. Tinnin joined the AEC a little over a year ago. He likes to spend time outside of work doing outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and gardening. When the weather isn’t ideal, he enjoys reading, playing video games, doing hands-on projects like model building and puzzles, and restoring/refinishing furniture.

“Aspen is my two and one-half-year-old Golden Retriever. She became a part of the family on July 3, 2021. One of my daughters found her posted on Facebook as a giveaway and I had been looking for an adult Golden. When she came to us, she was thin and infested with fleas and hookworms. She was also six weeks pregnant with her second litter.” “Just over two weeks after getting her, she had eight healthy Golden Retriever puppies. Dr. Bill Gooldy “I’m Dr. Bill Gooldy. I joined the staff of the AEC about three years ago. Prior to that, I worked in an Emergency Center in Phoenix, AZ. My wife, Juli, and I live on a ranch in Pryor, OK where I was raised. This is one of our horses, Smoke. I rescued him when he was about six months old. He was suffering from starvation and severe parasitism. I was very concerned about re-feeding syndrome and had to introduce nutrition to him very slowly. He is now a healthy four-year-old and is in great physical shape and has joined our herd of ranch horses. He is such a pleasure to be around, quite full of himself and just a little pampered. He thinks he is pretty special.” We asked Dr. Gooldy about rescuing horses. He pointed out that it is often a long process, and unfortunately not all horses are capable of recovery. FOSTER LOVE YOUNG TULSANS MAKE A DIFFERENCE HELPING RESCUE ANIMALS

Last year, more than 14,000 animals entered Tulsa area animal shelters. While the longterm goal of organizations like Tulsa SPCA and Puppy Haven is to find permanent, loving homes for rescue animals, they often look to foster families to free up space in shelters and prepare animals for adoption. "Foster families play a very important part in the success of a rescue,” explains Puppy Haven Rescue, a Tulsa non-profit committed to saving neglected, abandoned, impounded, or forgotten dogs and puppies.

Foster care helps rescued cats and dogs “become more acclimated to indoor living and gain confidence around humans and other animals,” says Taylor Roepke, Director of Community Engagement for the Tulsa SPCA, an organization that has advocated for and found loving homes for rescue animals since 1913. “Foster families enjoy the company of a four-legged friend without a long-term commitment and just as importantly, it allows the [organization] to take another animal into the shelter in its place.” For the Pets & Kids issue, we spoke to three young Tulsans, who are making a difference fostering rescue animals.

NORA AND NATALIE PAYTON, 15 AND 17 Nora and Natalie Payton were 10 and 12 years old when their family began fostering with Puppy Haven. Over the past five years, the girls have helped raise 20 puppies placed in their home as fosters. Fostering puppies is a serious commitment. Nora and Natalie do everything from feeding and bathing them to potty training and even waking up in the middle of the night to feed “bottle babies” with a medicine dropper. “Fostering has always been a family affair and we all have to pitch in,” explains their mother Jennifer. Despite the hard work, Nora and Natalie consider the job rewarding. "We absolutely love being able to say that we are helping the dog population in Tulsa and doing good,” says Natalie. “The work is hard, but seeing another dog get rescued and adopted into a loving home is a beautiful feeling." Being a foster family has also provided invaluable life experience for Nora and Natalie, admits their mother, who points to lessons in responsibility as well as compassion and empathy: “The girls have learned the practical side (cleaning, feeding, etc.) but they have also learned that everything we put into the puppies helps to ensure their success as a pet.” “Maybe the best lesson is that one person can make all the difference in the world to another living thing, and if you can do that, then you should.” – Jennifer Payton, Puppy Haven Rescue Foster CONTINUED >

GUS PATINO, 18, TULSA SPCA Gus Patino and his mother Sonia have been fostering with Tulsa SPCA since his freshman year in high school. He began as a volunteer with Safari Sanctuary, an exotic wildlife rescue in Broken Arrow, and the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, before doing an internship with Tulsa SPCA. As soon as he learned that fostering was an option, he was ready: “I wanted to become a foster right off the bat, but my mom said no. It took some convincing, but she finally agreed!” Although he has lost track of the number of dogs his family has fostered, he says they have all been special to him. “You fall in love with them and it’s hard to give them up for adoption. I know they will have a good life, so that makes it easier to let go.” Gus will begin college in the fall at OSU, majoring in Pre-Veterinary & Zoology, and attributes his career choice in part to his experience fostering. Recognizing a need for affordable veterinary care, he hopes to open an animal shelter and low-cost clinic, so that the homeless and those without means to care for their pets can receive support.

Property Division in Divorce Many people believe that divorce is simply the ending of a marriage. However, the reality is that the process involves several key factors, including the division of property. This can often be one of the most contentious aspects of any divorce. It is important for parties to understand the laws surrounding property division in their jurisdiction. Most states uphold an equitable distribution statute aimed at providing the fairest possible division of property. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people starting the divorce process to misunderstand how equitable distribution works. First, it is vital not to confuse the term “equitable” with “equal.” Most states uphold an equitable distribution law that strives to ensure the fairest possible division of marital property in a divorce. By contrast, some states uphold equal community property laws that ensure strict 50/50 division of marital property. While the equitable distribution process is more complex, it typically leads to more agreeable results for all parties involved than policies in community property states. The first step in an equitable distribution determination is identifying the full extent of the divorcing couple’s marital property. To do so, it is vital to

differentiate between “separate” property that belongs to just one spouse and “marital” property that belongs to both spouses. Separate property typically includes assets owned before the marriage began, gifts, and inheritances. In some cases, separate property transmutes to marital property when it meets specific requirements. The second phase of equitable distribution is the actual division of marital property. The judge must assess multiple factors to reach the fairest possible determination in the matter, including: • • • • •

Each spouse’s income and earning capacity. Each spouse’s conduct as it relates to marital property. Divorcing parents’ custody rights if children are involved. Any prenuptial contract. The amount of separate property each spouse owns.

These are just some of the most crucial factors a judge must consider when analyzing property division in a divorce case. Ultimately, the judge has the final say. As a result, many couples may look toward alternative dispute resolution methods like mediation as opposed to traditional divorce litigation. If parties are willing to negotiate privately, they can keep their property division determination firmly within their own control.
