Gone Fishin’ GETTING THE MOST FROM A GREAT DAY OF FISHING
Born and raised in Claremore, Oklahoma, Gordon Montgomery always preferred being outdoors. Early in his thirty-year career, Gordie worked the first five at the Old Skelly Ranch and Woods and Water before going out on his own guiding fishing and hunting trips. Over the years Gordie has built relationships with clients in what he still describes as a fun job. Nowadays, most of his business is repeat, introducing fishing and hunting to new generations of the same families. “I’m entertaining people while sharing the knowhow of fishing, and then seeing how they light up when they start catching fish.”

Gordie’s White Bass Recipe • Before preparing, cut any red meat from fillets • It’s best to soak fillets out for 24 hours with some salt in water • I like smaller pieces of fish for cooking • For breading I use ¼ box of Jiffy Cornbread mix combined with cornmeal and salt and pepper to taste • Deep fry at 350 degrees

So, what is Gordie’s secret for catching lots of fish? “Oklahoma, particularly this part of the state, has some of the most wellknown and well fished rivers and lakes in the country. There are no secret fishing holes. It’s about knowing where fish can be caught under varying conditions.” Gordie’s fishing trips are on northeastern Oklahoma’s interconnected rivers and lakes encompassing Grand Lake, Lake Hudson, Lake Skiatook, and Fort Gibson. You can count on an enjoyable day with a true pro and catching lots of fish in the most scenic part of the Sooner state. Gordie takes care of providing poles and bait. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, cap or hat, and be ready to take lots of photos. At the end of the day, Gordie can even clean and fillet your catch, and send you home with a recipe for the best way to cook it. Then it’s time to relax and talk, and watch a hawk makin’ lazy circles in the sky. Weather can be challenging in Gordie’s fun job. Think about it. He runs a year round business dealing with rain, snow, sleet, floods, drought, ice storms, thunderstorms with lightning and wind that comes sweepin’ down the plain. Yeeow! Ayipioeeay! It’s where Gordie’s knowledge and experience count most. Knowing how the flow and temperature of water in the morning and afternoon impacts fish, conditions that prolong the spawn of different species makes all the difference for a good day of fishing.
Gordie has built and maintained strong relationships based on honesty and respect with property owners in northeastern Oklahoma who he leases land from for hunting birds, migratory waterfowl, and whitetail deer. Access to these private hunting areas is a big benefit for Gordie’s clients. Fishing trips are scheduled April through June. Game bird, waterfowl, and whitetail deer guided trips are set during fall and winter based on Oklahoma’s hunting seasons. Contact Gordie for dates and scheduling. Spotlight on Tulsa’s Celebrity Attractions
There’s no business like show business. Celebrity Attractions will vouch for that. The company has presented and produced national touring Broadway shows, and more, since 1983. “It’s an honor to be part of a company that contributes so much to the quality of life and economies of the markets we serve,” said Kristin Dotson. She marks five years as Celebrity Attractions’ CEO this month. “Our staff is some of the best and most experienced in the country — committed to building and maintaining strong relationships with our patrons, our partners and our industry. And I learned from the best,” she noted, referring to the company’s founder Larry Payton. A friend and mentor to many, including me, Larry passed away in 2013 at the age of 64. Both he and his wife Kay Payton started Celebrity in their Tulsa home, building the company into a midwestern vanguard for Broadway. In addition to the touring Broadway productions they bring to Tulsa, Celebrity currently presents shows in Little Rock, Amarillo, Abilene and Springfield, MO. The company also invests in entertainment projects, including Tony Award-winning hits like Once, Spamalot, Kinky Boots and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Celebrity’s economic contribution to Tulsa cannot be overstated. For decades, the only crowd-drawing event taking place downtown on nights and weekends was a Broadway show. Celebrity Attractions was a boon for local business and theatre lovers alike. Celebrity’s 2021-22 season is well underway, with show dates from the 2020-21 lineup reconfigured to meet the

delays instigated by COVID. Oklahoma!, the 2019 winner of the Tony Award for Best Revival, plays at the Tulsa PAC, June 17-19. The musical has generated controversy due to director Daniel Fish’s take on the 1930 play by Claremore, Oklahoma native Lynn Riggs. To be noted, Rodgers and Hammerstein took a sunny, post-war look at Riggs’ piece when fashioning the musical. In Fish’s creation, not a single word of dialogue has been changed from the stage version. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s score of beloved tunes are all there. This Oklahoma! does not attempt to reproduce the 1943 musical or 1955 movie. It does accomplish what is seminal to art — innovation, novel perspective and creativity. In the upcoming months, look for other productions that found new time slots due to COVID: Anastasia (July 19-21), Pretty Woman (Aug. 23-28), the mega-hit Hadestown (Sept. 27-Oct. 2), and Frozen (Oct. 20-30). Knowing that ardent musical theatre folks don’t want to miss a single show, Celebrity just announced its stellar 2022-23 roster. “Subscribers are hungry and scrappy, and their ongoing support has brought us to this exciting day,” said Celebrity Attractions CEO Kristin Dotson at a recent press conference. Showgoers will recognize her reference to the blockbuster musical Hamilton. “We have an incredible lineup fit for a king and a queen, or maybe even six,” she teased. As unveiled, the season incorporates two of the biggest musicals in Broadway history, two new and popular shows, and a perennial favorite.

Hamilton March 7-19, 2023 Clearly the most celebrated theatre experience of the last decade, Hamilton has become part of American zeitgeist. Founding father Alexander Hamilton is at the center of the story, but the musical imparts much about the broader core group of patriots who fought for freedom. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music will linger in your head long after you leave the theatre, and the choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler is riveting.
Ain’t Too Proud The Life & Times of the Temptations April 4-9, 2023 Otis Williams is the founder and only surviving member of the Motown phenomenon known as The Temptations. Ain’t Too Proud intertwines Williams’ memories and The Temptations’ R&B hits —“ My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and many more. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and the winner of the 2019 Tony Award for Best Choreography, the musical follows the struggles of the group through tumultuous times and triumph.
Disney’s The Lion King June 1-17, 2023 I’ll never forget the first time I saw The Lion King. I cried during the opening number in response to its sheer beauty. Director Julie Taymor created something extraordinary and lasting with this musical. It deservedly won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Elton John and Tim Rice crafted the score, which includes “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” and my favorite, “Shadowland.” Visually, it recreates the majesty of Africa and carries the hopeful message that life carries on.

If you’ve been around Tulsa for a while, you might remember a tall building in Utica Square that used to be where P. F. Chang’s and Fleming’s are now. It was an eight-story high medical building, and it’s where many of Dr. Mark Davis’s patients started seeing him 40 years ago. Davis, now general and cosmetic dentist at Perfect Smile Tulsa on Lewis, says that level of patient loyalty says a lot about any business. It’s a testament to his commitment to service. “We make it a point to get to know you and your family and treat you with the best compassionate care,” Davis says. From patients, to staff, to family, Davis is clearly people-oriented. His advice to Tulsans looking for success with small businesses only confirms it. “Stick to your core values and treat people fairly and honestly,” he says. “Invest in yourself and your staff. But he still finds time for an active lifestyle, cycling with MaryCaroline and taking family vacations as often as possible. Growing pains were prevalent as one was taking hold of something and the other was learning to let go. As small children learning to walk, we can’t imagine where our steps in life will take us. But every parent knows that baby steps will eventually make adult size impressions. Parents also know that a small part of themselves will always keep those baby steps in their hearts even when those toddler’s feet grow to wear adult shoes and follow in their footsteps. There is an intrigue in the mind of a child as he takes his play hammer, screwdriver and other assorted toys and emulates his father’s actions. It’s a seed that both father and son will sometimes cultivate into a career from one to the other. For Emmanuel Mora, the specific seed of his father Augustin’s profession would begin as a work ethic and a desire to succeed in a foreign land. It would grow with each step Augustin took toward his desire to be a painter and owner of Impressions Painting Company. As he refined his step toward his goal, Emanuel was learning he would have some large shoes to fill when the time came to walk with his father on each job .… and fill he has in his youthful stride of 22 years of age. But it has not been a walk without obstacles. There have certainly been growing pains since first picking up a paint brush at the age of 13 on one of his father’s jobs. For Emmanuel, everything started at the age of 13, an age where men and women begin working in the Hispanic culture. He and his family migrated here from Mexico. Augustin had begun working in food service in Texas upon his arrival in the US. After a few years, he would soon grasp on to two simple desires; to make more money and to do so by painting houses. He was making such little money working in restaurants that he began painting houses for $500. And at even such a low amount, he was making more money and doing something he loved. Augustin became immersed in his craft learning everything he could about painting and drywall. Over the next few years as his skills increased so did his workload and profits. And like his father, he too enjoyed the painting trade. He became more involved even working after school through high school. And though college was in the cards for him at the time per his parents’ wishes, he had a love for business and developing ideas to build them. He would eventually follow in his father’s footsteps, but also clearing a new path that both would walk. “I was juggling school and work and the company hadn’t gone full-blown yet as we were still just working as subcontractors and not really moving forward. I had to decide what was more important to me. I quit school and started working in the business full-time,” Emmanuel said. The next year would be a battle of ideas and a measure of growth for both father and son. Growing pains were prevalent as one was taking hold of something and the other was learning to let go. “Once we became committed to building the business, we would argue a lot. My dad is the father figure and had been the boss, and it made for a weird dynamic at work for a while,” Emmanuel said. But after some discussions and realizations on both sides, father and son were able to become father and son business partners. And it seems to be working well for both with each handling different aspects of the business. Together they have been able to grow to three crews full-time and have done over one million dollars per year for the past two years. The father and son team paint homes and businesses, interior and exterior, as well as drywall work. “A one stop shop for anything painting,” Emmanuel said. They also do repairs such as exterior wood replacement that is needed before painting. In the end it seems some bonds are never broken; they just grow into new footprints that fit like an old pair of comfortable shoes.

Should We Live in the Same Home During a Divorce? When a divorce is filed, the couple often begins the process while living together in the same home. The question then for many is whether or not this is sustainable. Should the parties continue to live in the same home during the divorce? Or is it better that one party moves out of the house? And when there are kids involved in the divorce, does this change the analysis? These are all questions that many ask. The reality is that like anything else, there really are no black and white answers. Every case is different and every circumstance is different. Thus, it’s vital for parties to speak to an attorney about their particular situation. However, in a general sense, there are some factors that most parties ought to at least consider: 1.) Can the parties peacefully live together in the same home during the divorce? If they can, then perhaps it’s possible to stay in the same home. But if there are arguments, fighting, and any signs of domestic violence, then one party should almost always move out. 2.) Can the parties afford two residences? In some divorce actions, there is enough
money and assets for the parties to pay for two residences. But in other cases, money is extremely tight. There might be debts and other obligations. Further, there might not be any arguing, fighting, or domestic violence. In these cases, maybe the parties can stay in the same home while the divorce is pending.

3.) When there are kids involved in the divorce, bickering and fighting can have an adverse impact on the children from an emotional and psychological standpoint. Thus, in many of these cases, it makes sense for one party to move out for the benefit of the children.
5.) Some judges can be leery of granting a divorce where the parties are still residing in the same residence. They might believe that the marriage is not irretrievably broken and savable if they are still living in the same home. This can be true even where emotional separation is enough legally in certain states to grant a divorce. Thus, for parties who want a divorce, one party might have to move so that the judge grants the divorce. In this regard, it is important for a party to speak to a lawyer who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction.
4.) What are the goals as to child custody and can an agreement be reached as to custody and visitation in conjunction with one party moving out? Some would argue that if one parent moves out and leaves the children predominately with the other parent, it can impact that parent’s custody and visitation time in the end. In some ways, this can be true where there is a pattern established of the children spending more time with one parent or the other. But where a temporary visitation plan is put in play in conjunction with one party moving out, that concern can often be negated. Further, where there is fighting, arguing, and worries about domestic violence, and concerns that the police may be called, that can often hurt a custody case much worse than one

Blackberry Basil Crush A berry-licious drink to enjoy on warm summer days; includes a non-alcoholic version
BLACKBERRY BASIL CRUSH INGREDIENTS 1-2 tsp sugar | 3-4 basil leaves 1/2 lime | 1/4 cup frozen or fresh blackberries 2 ounces bourbon whiskey | Ice cubes 2 ounces club soda INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a cocktail shaker combine sugar, basil leaves, lime juice, blackberries, and bourbon. 2. Muddle to break up the berries, basil, and lime, and to dissolve the sugar. 3. Add a generous amount of ice, shake to chill and combine. 4. Fill an old fashioned glass with ice. Strain cocktail over ice, top off with club soda. Garnish with additional basil, berries, and lime if desired. With this recipe the bourbon can be exchanged for any other alcohol: Tequila, Vodka, Scotch, Gin or Rum. Double the club soda to make it non-alcoholic.
