Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers, Springfest will be at the Tulsa Garden Center, and we can always enjoy the gardens at Philbrook, Tulsa Botanic Garden, Ray Harral Nature Park & Center in Broken Arrow, Gathering Place and the multitude of parks and landscapes that the Tulsa metro offers. There are a number of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. Be sure to check out our suggested list for staycations and find even more locations on citylifestyle.com/Tulsa. Tulsa also has lots of sporting events to adventure out to. Maybe it’s time to take in a soccer game with FC Tulsa, or stop by ORU or Driller’s Stadium for some baseball or support your local school athletics. For some of us, our life is an adventure. THE ARTS AT HOLLAND HALL From visual art to dance, Holland Hall’s arts teachers cover a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines. They have many qualities in common: a thoughtful passion, a student-centered mindset, an innovative spirit. But one stands out. Most of these arts teachers are creating beyond the classroom as well-established artists themselves. We talked to a few of them to learn more about what motivates accomplished artists to teach.

BYRON SHEN An art class at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Washington D.C. began Hong Kong-born Byron Shen’s love of art. His painting eventually led him to attend the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. After teaching at several arts organizations, Holland Hall’s longtime Visual Arts Department Head, Eleanor Carmack, invited Shen to have an art exhibition at the school. Later, she asked him to join the department. When asked what such a gifted painter enjoys about teaching, Shen says he loves “being with students and helping them improve as artists as they find more understanding about themselves and the world. Art has that unique ability to be transformative both individually and collectively.” Shen speaks affectionately about Holland Hall’s support of the creative arts. “Holland Hall’s warm sense of community and desire to help develop an overall thoughtful and caring individual, where the arts are an important part of that development, sets it apart.”

TYNE SHILLINGFORD Enrolled in formal dance lessons from three years old onward, Tyne Shillingford has been in her students’ shoes. She’s a Holland Hall alumna and says she was honored to step into her former dance teacher’s position. Regarding teaching, Shillingford says she’s always been interested in creating and sharing movement with others, young people in particular. “They are so curious and honest, and I really love helping them discover their own creativity through movement,” Shillingford says. Last year, Shillingford led her students in a production highlighting Tulsa’s Greenwood District’s history and legacy. “It was the most meaningful and collaborative production I have ever done at Holland Hall because of the investment and support I received from the entire Holland Hall community,” she says.

Photography teacher Mazen Abufadil, originally from Lebanon, remembers time spent daydreaming as a child. “I often spent quiet moments simply observing everything around me, picking out intriguing sounds, details, textures, colors of my environment, and watching things move,” he says. Abufadil says his students are one of his most significant sources of inspiration, always keeping him thinking and engaged. “I am grateful that I have time to converse with my students - about art and life, philosophical debates, materials, techniques - every element has been a significant part of my being as an artist,” he says. His hopes for his students’ artistic development are simple.

“When a student is better able to see even a grain of sand that is integral to their element, then I am content,” Abufadil says. He appreciates the depth of arts education Holland Hall encourages. “We have time to craft relationships, to gain understanding, and to develop concepts, not just to use tools and techniques to make art,” he says. Abufadil was part of a recent exhibit at Gilcrease Museum highlighting the contributions of immigrant artists. He exhibited photo frescos representing his immigration experience.

Leslie Long, Holland Hall’s upper school theater teacher, didn’t fully realize her passion for theater until she started college at KU. Her road took her to Holland Hall, where she sees her students learning important life skills that reach beyond a set. “It’s not necessarily about students becoming actors. That’s very rare. For me, it’s more about teaching students to find the confidence to express themselves, no matter what age they are, and that ability to trust others and to be vulnerable and empathetic,” Long says. “It’s not a lonely discipline.” Long grew up with a cousin who had Down Syndrome, and soon after she started teaching at Holland Hall, she knew she was ready to do something to serve the Down Syndrome community. Her idea blossomed into a rich partnership between Holland Hall’s upper school students and the Down Syndrome Association of Tulsa. Long and her upper school students hold acting classes, put on productions, and host summer camps and fundraisers for people with Down Syndrome. “Holland Hall is a second home for them,” she says.

Adding Third Parties Into a Divorce Proceeding A divorce proceeding can be complex enough. Where parties do not agree on one or more matters, it can turn a divorce into a contested legal proceeding. Whether the differences be on child custody, child support, spousal support, property and debt division or any other issue, if there is not a complete agreement, a judge often has to resolve the dispute after a trial. However, in some cases, matters may even be more complex. For example, in some cases, third parties may need to be added to the divorce itself for jurisdictional purposes. In addition, third parties can hire legal counsel, call witnesses and present evidence at trial. Thus, the dispute between the two parties to the marriage can become broader and complex. Many are confused at the notion of a third party being added to a divorce proceeding. But in some cases, the third parties have to be added to ensure the court has jurisdiction to address all relevant issues. Without their addition, the court lack may lack jurisdiction to address essential matters regarding property and debt division and child custody. Here are some examples of times where third parties are necessary: Third Party Fathers: When children are born of the marriage or a pregnancy, there is a presumption that the husband is the father of that child. However, in some cases, that is in dis-

pute or not true. It might be alleged that the wife had an extramarital affair and that another individual is the father of the child. In those cases, the actual father of the child will need to be added to the divorce if it is proven that the husband is not the father through a DNA test. By adding the natural father, the court can divorce the parties, make a finding that the husband is not the father and can name the third party as father of the child for custody and support purposes. Trust Assets: In some marriages, there are trust assets that can come into the dispute as to marital property and debt division. The exact type of trust can vary. However, many of these trusts can be irrevocable trusts where neither party to the divorce is a trustee. Yet, one party to the divorce argues that trust assets or income is marital property in some regard. When this is the case, the trustee of the trust often needs to be added as a third party to the divorce for matters relating to the trust in the divorce resolution. Jointly Held Property: Parties who are divorcing can sometimes hold property jointly with other third parties who are not their spouse. For example, it could be real estate, vehicles, bank or investment accounts and various assets. Sometimes, this is done innocently. But in other cases, the property is jointly held in an attempt at shielding it from the divorce court. When one spouse alleges that the jointly held property is martial property, the third party who holds title to this property often needs to be added into the divorce as a third party. Otherwise, the court would have no

jurisdiction to order this third property to do anything relative to this jointly held property. Business Interests: If a business interest is at issue in a divorce, the business or corporation may need to be added to this litigation as well. Adding the business or corporation into the litigation as a third party gives the court jurisdiction over the entity. It also gives the entity the ability to defend their interests. Adding a third party entity into litigation is often more important where there are other owners besides the divorcing parties. When a third party is joined, the third party generally has a right to file legal pleadings and motions to protect their interests. These third parties may also opt to issue discovery, take depositions, call and examine witnesses and president evidence at trial. Thus, the addition of a third party can delay the divorce proceedings in certain respects. It might also make the litigation more complex and costly. At the same time, the addition of third parties is sometimes a necessity. Bill Miller, Piano Man Extraordinaire T U L S A ’ S

Talk about an interesting life journey, Tulsan Bill Miller is a third generation craftsman in a family with 157 years of combined experience with a love of music. Following the path of his German grandfather and father, Bill provides world-class service and piano repair work and distinct, old-world remediation strategies with museum-quality restorations which he began learning at an early age. Early on Bill’s adventure took him to the other side of the world via serving in the US Navy from 1952 to 1960 where he suffered a major injury on board a ship resulting in a three month stint in the hospital. “We took Marines to 38th parallel in the Korean police

action. It got down to twenty below zero over there, and we were not outfitted for twenty below.” Returning from military service, Bill took a job sacking groceries at Safeway. “There weren’t a lot of jobs back then. I made 28 cents and hour and worked 50 plus hours a week and the rent on my apartment was fifty dollars a month.” Luckily, after two years, Bill was hired by American Airlines where he spent thirty-eight years doing aircraft maintenance. After hours he worked for Tulsa Public Schools tuning all the pianos owned by the school system, which numbered in the hundreds. “I tuned every piano twice a year.”

One of those TPS pianos, a Baldwin grand, was played by an up and coming musician named Leon Russell. “Leon practiced on the piano at Second Baptist Church in Tulsa. They banned him from playing it because he was a banger (rough on the piano). I set up a piano for him in the basement of the church” When it comes to piano restoration, Bill assures you should never anguish over impossible piano damage. “No matter what disaster has befallen your concert piano, priceless antique, or household treasure, I can recover the charm and pride of your treasure. I have restored pianos damaged by tornadoes, fires, and floods. One was a baby grand crushed among the rubble of the 2011 Joplin, Missouri tornado. That piano was filled with glass and other debris and had many scratches.” The owner praises Bill’s hard work restoring both the look of her piano and how it plays. He recently completed restoration of an 1830 piano with four legs from London, England. At one time Bill’s company had three locations in Tulsa. These days he, along with his wife, works out of their garage. “There’s plenty of business tuning, repairing, and restoring pianos.” Currently they’re working on 1909 and 1920 uprights and an 1880s square grand with four legs measuring five feet wide and seven feet long. Bill reminisced about the cost of petroleum based products he uses in restoration. “I used to get cans of stain for eleven cents. Now it’s forty-nine dollars. Lacquer thinner that was 89 cents a can now runs twenty-seven dollars.” Bill shared tips to care for and extend the life of your piano. “All manufacturers recommend tuning pianos at regular intervals. A good rule to follow is to have your piano tuned when you turn on the heat, and then when you switch on the air conditioning. Humidity, temperature, and exposure to sunlight all impact the sound quality and appearance of your piano. Expert tuning keeps the proper stress on the strings. Absence of tuning can cause a wide range of issues including fractures on the sound board. We can change worn parts with new pieces, clean the interior, and refinish the outside.”
