Uncorking the Cure for MS

Lucia and Dr. Brent Laughlin to receive MS Hope Award, the highest award presented by the National MS Society

Look up the term “servant leader” in the dictionary and you will find a photo of Lucia and Dr. Brent Laughlin. There is no task too small nor too large for them to tackle when they volunteer for a cause close to their hearts. Their involvement with the National MS Society started with Uncorking the Cure over a decade ago, an event they eventually chaired for two years. Brent took his devotion to new heights when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and planted an MS flag at its peak, while raising over $35k for a cure! Lucia and Brent donate their time and talent out of love for their sister-in-law, Nancy Hawkins. Brent joined the Society’s Oklahoma Leadership Council to help Oklahomans living with MS, and was invited to join the Regional Board of Trustees in 2021, providing creative input and strategic leadership from his unique perspective as a family physician and a person who loves someone living with MS. Lucia and Brent will be recognized with the MS Hope Award on Friday, March 4 at the 20th Annual Uncorking the Cure for MS event. The MS Hope Award is the highest award presented by the National MS Society for community and humanitarian efforts.

Recipients are those who strive to improve others’ quality of life today and create a better world tomorrow. Events like Uncorking would not be possible without the incredible volunteers of the National MS Society. Volunteers are helping people living with MS live their best lives. What Can Bank Statements Show in a Divorce? In a divorce, there is a lot of information and evidence that a court may look at in terms of helping to ensure a just result. One piece of evidence that can become important is bank statements. In some circumstances, the courts may order the parties to exchange bank statements voluntarily. In some cases, the parties may agree to exchange bank statements by consent. And in other cases, the parties may issue requests for production upon each other to produce bank statements. In some cases, the parties in a divorce may have jointly titled all of their bank statements. In other cases, the parties may have had separate bank accounts during the marriage. This can lead to different levels of concern

in some cases — and different levels of need to exchange this information. What can bank statements show? And why can they be important in a divorce? These are questions many would ask. As it relates to spousal maintenance and child support, bank statements can show deposits into an account. In cases where the income of the parties is a disputed issue, this can be even more relevant. This can be particularly true where there is commission-based income, tips, rental income, or income from secondary employment. Bank statements can also show spending habits. These spending habits can be important as it relates to determining the expenses of parties in a divorce. These expenses can be important as it relates to spousal maintenance. It can also be important

as it relates to child support when the expenses relate to the children. In some cases, the parties might need to show fairly recent bank statements. Beaver Creek A GEM IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES

We all have that dream of waking up on Christmas morning in the mountains, snow falling, fire place lit and surrounded by loved ones. This year, I spent the holiday with my daughter in the town of Avon near Beaver Creek ski area. It was Christmas Eve and the first big snowfall of the season as we drove into Beaver Creek. The snow sparkled on trees lit with white lights that dotted the hillsides. On Christmas morning the sun was shining over the Rocky Mountains and the fresh powdered snow blanketed the landscape. The condo faced the ski slopes and below was a walking path that ran along the scenic Eagle River. My passion? Skiing! I’ve been skiing since I was two and raced slalom and giant slalom through high school. I missed skiing the last five years and was excited to have the opportunity. Around

the corner from the condo, I rented ski equipment from Beaver Creek Sports which sits next to The Westin. Residents and visitors can use the ski valet service which allows you to store your skis and boots overnight. Outside the doors of Beaver Creek Sports and The Westin sits The Riverfront Express Gondola which carries you up the mountain. Near the end of the gondola ride, you pass a majestic building, The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, a luxury resort with ski-in, ski-out access. We skied non-stop for the entire day. There were groomed slopes, trails, moguls, steep terrains, and easy runs and in the two days of skiing I only saw a part of the entire ski area. One of the lifts takes

you over a home that used to be 38th U.S. President Gerald Ford’s home and there is a bunker built in the ground where the secret service stayed. Saving the best for last, we were invited – well mom tagged along – to First Tracks. There is a Beaver Creek Club and once a month club members and invited guests are the first skiers on the mountain from 7 to 9 a.m. It was snowing, the powder was inches deep, the runs were forever and honestly, it was the BEST SKIING I have ever experienced. It was truly a wonderful Christmas; time with family, meeting new friends, good food, great skiing, gorgeous views and a quaint little town with never-ending snowflakes falling from the sky.

Multi-instrumentalist Tulsa jazz musician Joesf Glaude studied music at Christopher Newport College in Virginia. He then became the Head Guitar Professor at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa before leaving to pursue music exclusively, focusing on small groups, solo acoustic, and harp guitar. With his signature style, Joesf has performed an impressive music repertoire, ranging from classical and bluegrass to punk rock and jazz for audiences around Tulsa and across America since 2000. In addition to his established reputation as a musician, Joesf has also made his mark as a philanthropist, donating his talent to perform at events hosted by a long list of local charities over the years, including Soldier’s Wish, Helpless Hounds, Catholic Charities, Emergency Infant Services, Food For The Poor, and many others. He was also involved in the Hurricane Harvey Festival in 2017. He also created his own event---now in its 26th year---called the BUS concert, which he hosts twice a year at various venues, dedicated to getting donations of blankets, underwear and socks to support Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless. Once homeless himself, he sees the concerts as his way to give back to those who helped him.

Joesf has 13 CDs to his creative credit and is currently working on a Christmas CD. Apart from his work as a soloist and clinician, his other projects include classical guitar and violin with James Ruggles, Guitars Gone Wild (a jazz fusion group) with Jarrod Elmore and Bill Jones, and Blues/ R&B/Soul with vocalist Big Joe Muse. Joesf has also worked with Angie Cockrell and Sean Al-Jibouri, who played on his CD Sentimental Blue, and popular local musician Randy Brumley. Joesf can be heard on Pandora, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart Radio and other internet radio stations. Most awarded for jazz, Joesf is a five-time winner of Urban Tulsa Magazine’s Absolute Best of Tulsa for Jazz Artist of the Year, Instrumental Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. He’s been featured in Oklahoma magazine, Tulsa World, Tulsa Front Page, The Current, and others. He also was recognized as one of the World’s Top 50 Harp Guitarists by the music industry’s popular Fingerstyle Guitar magazine. PASSION AN ART IN HUMAN FORM ARTICLE BY C.L. HARMON

My dad never worked a day in his life after he began what was to be his chosen profession. It sure seemed like work to me though. For me, sanding and painting cars, body work and panel swaps felt like work. The dust, fumes and occasional expletives when things weren’t going right had all the earmarks of my definition for work. But not to him. He was a man who was having fun. And each new job was an eager challenge to be met with fervor and a positive attitude. It just made no sense to me that this man loved getting up early to open his shop and then wore a smile at work every day to boot. But he knew something I had not yet learned. It is something that only those who experience it can define…passion…to do every day what brings us fulfillment and pride. It’s a strange phenomenon which burns, thirsts and drives as though it is alive. For those spotlighted in this edition and many others around the globe, passion is their professions. They chased it and it allowed them to catch it. The same is true for all of us when we find what is worth going after and then do it. Passion is art in human form; the creation of something inside us that somehow welds us perfectly to what we care about. It’s a chase that each of us should embark upon and become ours for the catching and relish in the reward of the passion which is then ours for the taking. Because that which is designed for us to find fulfillment through our endeavors is, after all, the noblest of pursuits in our pursuit to define passion in ourselves.
