It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be.

Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolved around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them.

Our January issue is dedicated to the importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love.

IT TAKES AN ISLAND TO CROSS AN OCEAN

A University of Oklahoma alumnus/U.S. Marine Corps veteran teamed up with three other U.S. armed forces veterans on a daring rowing challenge across the Atlantic Ocean in December to raise funds for organizations in their home state of Florida targeting veterans struggling with mental health issues.

Paul Lore, who earned his master’s degree in public administration in 2011 from OU, is sharing their story in hopes that news of their involvement in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge—billed as the “World’s Toughest Row”—will inspire members of the OU family— and the public at-large, especially those currently serving or having served in the armed forces—to follow suit by creating their own campaign or aiding an established fundraiser such as this one.

During the race, Lore and his team rowed more than 1.5 million oar strokes. They rowed for two hours, and slept for two hours, constantly, 24 hours a day, in waves measuring up to 20 feet high. Rowers generally burn over 5,000 calories a day, and on average lose over 26 lbs. during the crossing.

“We are embarking on this endurance journey to raise awareness and funds for PTSD and veteran suicide—partnering with organizations that are making a discernible impact in this area,” says Paul, who served as an air traffic controller in the Marines and retired from a 30-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Every day we’re on the ocean for this unsupported row, we will be pushing for each stroke, for each mile, for each day—we will get up and put in the work to achieve the goal. While this is the hardest endurance challenge the four of us will face, it pales in comparison to what warriors with PTSD face every day.”

The other members of Paul’s ocean row team were Billy Cimino, Cameron Hansen and A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann, veterans of the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy, respectively. Of course, not unlike with any military foray, the FOAR FROM HOME team also included numerous people working behind the scenes. This “army” of supporters included their spouses and a land support team working in areas ranging from boat shipping and equipment logistics to row coaching and media consultant.

Even before the race, the FFH team had exceeded its initial $500,000 goal to benefit their partner organizations—K9’s For Warriors and Cross The Line Foundation. The team coined the phrase “It Takes an Island to Cross an Ocean” early on in their campaign, and their fundraising successes have proven this to be true. The team will continue to push with their fundraising through 2022 by working to fund four more dogs for K9’s for Warriors and four additional scholarships for Cross The Line Foundation, as well as the broader mission of raising awareness of PTSD and other issues plaguing our nation’s warriors.

THE TALISKER WHISK Y ATL ANTIC CHALLENGE Atlantic Campaigns SL, a Spanish company situated in San Sebastian de La Gomera, has organized the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge since 2012 and overseen seven ocean rows and seven Guinness World Records. Over $7 million has been raised for charities worldwide over the past four races.

This year, the challenge began in early December, in the race village of San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, and included 30 to 40 row teams from around the world.

The challenge took FOAR FROM HOME and the other rowing teams more than 3,000 miles west to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbor, Antigua—one of the two major islands that comprise the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. The rowers battle with sleep deprivation, salt sores and other physical extremes while they work together to ensure they reach their destination safely.

I’ve enjoyed the glories of Italy during several excursions, yet I harbor a continuing, passionate yearning to see more. Learn more. Eat more. The quest to experience all that I possibly can in this vibrant country, from the top of the boot to its toe, is a work in progress.

People, it seems, travel to Italy for a variety of reasons.

For me, it’s a way to connect to my roots. My mother’s maternal grandparents were from southern-most Italy.

I grew up on feasts of marinara-topped pasta with such depth of flavor, it tasted like food for the gods, or the last meal requested by gladiators.

During my travels, I’ve been fascinated by nearly every street corner in Rome. Venice was transcendent, and Florence was everything this Art History graduate had dreamed. When I learned of the Umbrian jazz festival, hosted every year in Perugia, I knew I had a mission. My husband and I spent a month there and visited as many of the Umbrian hill towns that we could by bus or train.

But what of Southern Italy? We’ve been to Sicily and Capri. Our return to the Campania region this past November was again memorable. With its astonishing vistas, Positano has to be the most romantic spot on earth.

What we had not experienced until recently was the region of Apulia (called Puglia by the Italians), and its neighboring region, Basilicata. Apulia is located in the boot heel of Italy, and Basilicata is inland from there.

The UNESCO World Heritage site Alberobello, located in Italy's Apulia region, is famous for its conicalshaped houses called trulli.

Traveling east from the lemon-kissed seaside town of Sorrento, we arrived in picturesque Trani on the Adriatic Sea. We settled in for a lunch of fresh-from-the-boat seafood and an exquisite view of its quaint harbor. In its day, Trani was an important trade center. It’s still known for its sweet dessert wine, Moscato di Trani.

Scholars opine that Trani’s Romanesque-era Duomo (cathedral), founded in 1097 and completed in the middle of the 13th century, is the most beautiful church in Apulia.

It’s not often that you see such an imposing structure positioned on a seafront promontory. The contrast of its white-washed stone exterior and the azure Adriatic is stunning, as is the simplicity of the church’s interior.

Travelling along the Adriatic from Trani, you will discover Bari, a cosmopolitan city with art galleries and a grand opera house.

developed by the Romans. There are two important sections of the town, the Citta Vecchia, which is a labyrinth of ancient streets, and the Citta Nuova, or modern city, with wide boulevards and French architecture. Napoleon’s brother-in-law, Murat, had a hand in laying out modern Bari on a grid.

Notable in old Bari is the church of San Nicola, founded in 1087. It houses the bones of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Russia. His remains were stolen from Turkey by 47 opportunistic Bari sailors.

That bit of piracy put Bari on the trade map of the

influential Appian Way. The town retains much of its old-world character. In the Citta Vecchia, we found women in alleyways making the region’s signature pasta, orecchiette (little ears). Of course, everywhere you go in Italy, the pasta is incredible, and the gelato is divine. A memorable culinary coup was scoring a delectable hot slice of focaccia in Bari’s old town. One hint: don’t go there at night unless you are good with directions. The secret to finding your way out is that the dark cobblestones lead to the area’s exit points.

A side trip from Bari down the coast, past miles of olive groves, is the UNESCO heritage site of Alberobello. Dotting the hillsides of this 13th-century town are trulli, which are conical-shaped limestone dwellings, constructed without mortar. Legend is that when the tax collector was coming to town, the citizens could take apart their houses and hide in the woods to escape paying tax. People live in the houses still.

Stay in town until dusk. When tourists leave, you can sense its unique character.

It is easy to lose one's self, and one's way, in Bari's ancient city.

If you’ve never heard of Matera, you are not alone.

However, millions of people around the globe will have seen Matera in the opening scenes of the latest James Bond film. Nine civilizations have thrived here, dating back to the 8th-century BC. Quite recently, people lived in the town’s rock-cut dwellings, called sassi, that have origins in the Byzantine era.

Located in the very heel of Italy’s boot, between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Lecce is a stone’s throw from lovely beaches. Known as “The Florence of the South,” Lecce’s is famous for its Baroque CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / T UL SA

architecture. The local sandstone is so soft, it can easily be carved and detailed. One example is the city’s Basilicata di Santa Croce (1549-1679).

There’s also a well-preserved Roman amphitheater in the center of town that is fascinating. Arts and crafts are big here, so time for browsing and shopping is recommended.

We ended our trip in Naples, which has the best pizza and one of the finest archeological museums in the world. Many treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum are found at Naples’ Museo Nacionale.

There’s much to do and relish in all of Italy, and particularly in the south. Find a seaside town, sip on the perfect glass of wine and take in the beauty. “Il dolce far niente” — the sweetness of doing nothing — there’s a lot to say for that, too.

Inheritance and the Perils of Commingling Inheritance is an event that eventually happens in the life of many.

When a family member becomes deceased, or even a close friend, an individual may inherit a piece of their deceased family member’s or friend’s estate.

The inheritance can be through the probate process in probate court where a Last Will and Testament existed. In other instances, there might be a non-probate transfer of inheritance.

This can come by way of life insurance or other assets, like bank accounts, that have payable on death or transfer on death designations. With real estate, there might even be a beneficiary deed. When that is the case, the transfer of real estate can happen outside of the probate court.

No matter the circumstances, inheritance is almost always treated as separate property in a divorce. Thus, if one spouse received the inheritance alone, in the case of divorce, they would ordinarily get this inheritance free from any claims of their spouse.

There is a common scenario,

however, that can blur these lines. The common scenario involves the commingling of the separate inheritance with marital property.

Take an instance where a party inherits liquid funds — either through a probate or non-probate transfer. Instead of putting this inheritance in a bank account in their name alone, what some parties do is place the inheritance in a marital bank account that also has their spouse’s name on it along with marital money.

When this is the case, commingling has occurred. By commingling, it means that the separate inheritance has been mixed with marital money.

When that takes place, many family courts will treat all the money in the marital bank account, including the separate inheritance, as marital property.

Further, when the bank account has both spouse’s names on it, many family courts will also consider this marital property under the doctrine of transmutation. Transmutation is where separate property is treated as a donated gift to the marital estate because it was placed in a jointly titled account or, in the case of real estate,

the inherited property is placed in the name of both spouses by a subsequent deed.

For parties who are receiving the inheritance, and they wish to keep that inheritance their separate property in the case of a divorce, it is vital to speak with an attorney before receiving these funds or property. Not commingling and/or transmuting the assets in the first place can be critical.

In cases where commingling has occurred, it might be possible to hire a forensic accountant in some cases to trace the separate property from the marital property, although in many cases, the damage might already have been done.

long-haul covid Putting Out the Fire of Inflammation

Nearly 50 million people in the US have had a Covid-19 infection at least once. More than 30% of recovered patients are reporting symptoms long after the virus has cleared. Some of the lingering symptoms reported include continued loss of smell and taste, chronic fatigue, clouded thinking, headache, anxiety, depression, difficulty breathing, lingering cough and poor sleep.

The symptoms have been given several official names including Long-Haul Covid-19, post-COVID conditions and Multisystem Inflammatory Response. As of October 1, 2021, medical practices have ICD-10 codes including U09.9 (post COVID-19 condition, unspecified), which can be used to bill for patient visits related to these lingering symptoms.

Post viral syndromes are not new. The body’s response to a viral infection may be compared to a battlefield in a war. When a war is over, the earth is left with rising heat and evidence of destruction. Similarly in the body, after fighting a virus, the body is left with the effects of inflammatory responses, metabolic by-products and toxins.

Prolonged inflammation is thought to contribute to the lingering symptoms. One of the goals of treatment would be to resolve the inflammatory state and remove symptoms. Ideally, any treatment used would be effective and free of side effects.
