The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled some gift guides to make your shopping easier and that also support our local businesses. During this season of giving, we’ve written about a special lady, Tina Parkhill, who goes above and beyond in giving back to our community. We spoke with a few of our first responders to find out how they celebrate Christmas away from their families and spread holiday cheer. We want to thank them and all first responders for serving and protecting our community and wish them a safe and joyous holiday. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

“I just don’t have the time.” It’s something that most of us say. And many of us say it quite often. We live in a busy world, with a seemingly never-ending to-do list. Sure, we give back in little ways like dropping a few dollars to the homeless person on the corner as we wait for the stoplight to change, teach a Sunday school class, or pick an angel from the Angel Tree during the holidays. But the truth is, most of us are focused on just getting through the day, meeting our responsibilities, and carving out a few minutes for ourselves at the end of the day. But now

and then, the universe provides us an example to remind us about what life is truly about. We encounter someone who looks at their surroundings and thinks, “there just isn’t enough time in the day to do everything for everyone who needs it.” These rare people have what is known as a servant’s heart… and after knowing someone who has one, we are touched and never quite the same. Allow me to introduce you to someone who spends her time living with a servant’s heart. Her name is Tina Parkhill, and she is one such example.

On A Giving Trajectory “Much of what drives me comes back to my mother. She instilled in me the desire to give back to the community philanthropically. I grew up very modestly in a small community and we didn’t have much money, but still I was taught through the kindness and willingness to give to others that I saw through my mother. Then in high school, I was fortunate to have mentors who continued to instill in me what my mother always had. Even then, I was beginning to develop a servant’s heart,” Tina said. She would stay on that trajectory of giving and kindness as she entered into college at Oklahoma State University joining a sorority that focused heavily on philanthropic projects. It was a path she had begun as a child. Though still quite young, but old enough to know the family didn’t have much money, she was able to recognize that she had more than many others. Just knowing this made her want to share when she could and just be kind if she couldn’t. Although the desire to give can be a learned behavior, for her it always seemed as though it was a part of the fabric from which she was created, a trajectory of charity and kindness woven into the very fibers of her being, it seems. A Servant’s Heart “I get a lot of satisfaction from giving to others. I enjoy seeing the smiles of those I help and bringing joy to others,” she said. This is evident at just a glance of the organizations and projects in which she has been involved. It reads as a resume from a highly accomplished charity foundation. In fact, too many to be listed in this article. And with her sense of humility, she wouldn’t want them listed. The amount of time it takes to give to others as Tina does is astonishing. And she has done this while building and maintaining her successful business, Parkhill’s Liquor & Wine South, and raising a family. For those who do not live with a servant’s heart, this is beyond admirable. But for Tina each moment was just another opportunity to make someone smile. Each week she provides 10-15 hours in various capacities for the betterment of her community. For 30 years, Tina has been making a difference in Tulsa. Countless hours

and financial contributions, she has donated with no expectation of anything in return. She has been recognized and awarded for her philanthropic endeavors, but these accolades hold little value to her in comparison to the differences she makes in others’ lives. To Tina, talking about the importance of giving back to a community that has given her so much, and how just a little bit of ourselves can provide so much for others, is what matters most. A Stitch In Time From those meager times growing up in Clayton, New Mexico with very little, to a successful business professional, Tina followed a trajectory that has led her to be one of those rare among us who doesn’t claim to “not have time” when someone is in need, but rather the one who says there is always time to make a difference. And for this, she is, without a doubt, a swatch of fabric stitched into the proverbial community blanket and one of the few patches for its holes which blanket us all in the Tulsa community. As the weather gets colder and more fireplaces are in use, there is a corresponding rise in house fires originating from chimneys. You may be thinking, ‘Big deal. Aren’t chimneys capable of withstanding a little fire?’ Well, the answer is no. Chimneys are meant to contain smoke, not fire. Jason Morgan, Fire Captain for the Tulsa Fire Department says, “Wood-burning fireplaces with masonry chimneys are the primary culprits of chimney fires. Over time, two things can occur. First, cracks may appear in masonry chimneys either from settling or from exposure to heat over time. These cracks can reveal framing and other flammable substances to the high heat meant to be contained by the chimney, leading to fires in walls and attics that spread undetected for quite a while before occupants of the house become aware of them.” “The second contributing factor is soot accumulation which leads to potential creosote accumulation. With a sufficiently hot fire in the fireplace and sufficient

creosote accumulation, the creosote will ignite and burn extremely hot,” he says. “This can result in shooting flames coming out of the top of the chimney and igniting the surrounding roof or escaping through those cracks in the chimney into the attic or wall space. The high heat of a creosote fire will also cause additional damage to the chimney itself.” To protect against this, be sure to have your masonry chimney cleaned and inspected regularly by a certified chimney sweep. They will check for dangerous creosote deposits, flue blockages, and other issues that could increase your chances of having a chimney fire. Find a local CSIA-Certified Chimney Sweep at CSIA.org. JA S O N MORGAN FIRE CAPTAIN/PARAMEDIC WHAT DOES CHRISTMAS DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? I will arrive at the fire station by 7 a.m. on Christmas morning and stay until the 26th. When my kids Gage and Carly were younger, we would wake up super early to open presents from Santa. Now that they are teenagers, we celebrate on Christmas Eve.

HOW DO YOU STAY FIT DURING THE HOLIDAYS? Staying fit is a priority for me. High levels of fitness allow firefighters to perform more effectively and avoid injuries. As a lifelong fitness enthusiast, I opened Select Fitness in Jenks 19 years ago with my business partner Mike Pierce.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A FIREFIGHTER THIS TIME OF YEAR? Because we show up when somebody is having a "bad day", we have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact despite their misfortune. WILL YOU BE WORKING ON CHRISTMAS DAY? In the past, my family and I have made it work by celebrating Christmas on a different day. Luckily, I was able to set a schedule this year that would sacrifice working on Thanksgiving to be off on Christmas.

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ALIVE WHILE ON DUTY? It’s easy to have Christmas spirit this time of year, whether it’s wearing a Santa hat or listening to Christmas songs. EMSA receives comfort items from a local non-profit and we give them to young patients, which is extra special during Christmas time!

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMILY TRADITIONS? We have many little traditions in the Kolodzej household. But my favorite by far is shopping for a new building for our Christmas village. This year my oldest son, Zeno, will have the honor of choosing the building.

WHEN DO YOU CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS? We usually celebrate the holidays around my schedule. In the past, I have traded days with officers with younger kids so they can enjoy Christmas morning.

BEST SAFETY TIP FOR THE PUBLIC? The best safety tip I can offer is to not drink and drive. Drive like you mean everything to someone--because you do. We do not like responding to collisions, they are all hard, but the holidays add to the burden we already carry.

WHAT BRINGS YOU THE MOST JOY DURING THE HOLIDAYS? I love helping those that cannot help themselves, such as the elderly. I especially enjoy the opportunity to help older veterans because their sacrifices paved the way for what we are able to do today. Christmas is extremely important to me because it’s also my 8-year-old going on 9-year-old’s birthday! I enjoy wearing a Santa hat while on duty and have been blessed with gift cards to hand out to those in need. One year, I was on a burglary investigation on Christmas Eve where a family had all their gifts stolen from under the tree. I was able to give the family an expensive gift card donated by a local company to replace ALL the gifts that were taken. It was a great feeling!

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT POLICE OFFICERS DURING THE HOLIDAYS? Food is always good. Drop it by the different divisions or if you see an officer in a restaurant, offer to buy their meal. Support is so important in today’s world. A simple thank you goes a long way, but it’s always a blessing to be provided a meal.

The Importance of Tracing Assets in a Divorce Case Tracing separate property or assets in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage. They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed. The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts before marriage argues that the pre-marital por-

tion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce. The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage. At a minimum, parties may need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determine the amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage. In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank

accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies, and other assets where a party might have built up cash value before marriage. In some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted before getting married. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
