We thought it might help to plan a little earlier this year if you're thinking of inviting him over. Saving the best for last, we were thrilled when Tulsa Police Chief Franklin was able to meet with Nancy and Cindy, our writer and photographer, and want to thank him for taking time from his busy schedule. Property Division in Divorce differentiate between “separate” property that belongs to just one spouse and “marital” property that belongs to both spouses. Separate property typically includes assets owned before the marriage began, gifts, and inheritances. In some cases, separate property transmutes to marital property when it meets specific requirements. The second phase of equitable distribution is the actual division of marital property. The judge must assess multiple factors to reach the fairest possible determination in the matter, including:

Many people believe that divorce is simply the ending of a marriage. However, the reality is that the process involves several key factors, including the division of property. This can often be one of the most contentious aspects of any divorce. It is important for parties to understand the laws surrounding property division in their jurisdiction. Most states uphold an equitable distribution statute aimed at providing the fairest possible division of property. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people starting the divorce process to misunderstand how equitable distribution works. First, it is vital not to confuse the term “equitable” with “equal.” Most states uphold an equitable distribution law that strives to ensure the fairest possible division of marital property in a divorce. By contrast, some states uphold equal community property laws that ensure strict 50/50 division of marital property. While the equitable distribution process is more complex, it typically leads to more agreeable results for all parties involved than policies in community property states. The first step in an equitable distribution determination is identifying the full extent of the divorcing couple’s marital property. To do so, it is vital to

• • • • •

Each spouse’s income and earning capacity. Each spouse’s conduct as it relates to marital property. Divorcing parents’ custody rights if children are involved. Any prenuptial contract. The amount of separate property each spouse owns.

These are just some of the most crucial factors a judge must consider when analyzing property division in a divorce case. Ultimately, the judge has the final say. As a result, many couples may look toward alternative dispute resolution methods like mediation as opposed to traditional divorce litigation. If parties are willing to negotiate privately, they can keep their property division determination firmly within their own control.

Regardless of what path parties choose to handle their divorce, financial disclosure requires careful consideration. Financial disclosure means providing complete and accurate information that clearly lists all relevant details about all property and assets. Both parties must provide a complete list of all separate property they intend to claim, as well as records of all marital property and assets. Unfortunately, some people heading for divorce attempt to hide assets or intentionally waste marital assets out of a desire for personal gain or to spite their soon-to-be ex-spouse. These are unwise decisions the court will eventually reveal. If the court discovers that parties intentionally hid or squandered marital assets for personal gain, they should expect these actions to carry significant consequences. In some cases, hiding marital assets can lead to fraud charges. way. Whatever you need. We will work through it and find what you need.’” Franklin occasionally had been “poked and prodded” by colleagues who wanted him to seek higher rank. His good friend, the beloved Jenks coach Allan Trimble, also encouraged Franklin. “He kept saying, ‘Hey, when are you going to be Chief?’” remembered Franklin. I’d say ‘Oh my God, Coach. I’m not going to be Chief. That’s not something I‘m looking for’ — and here I am.” One wonders if Franklin had foreseen how 2020-21 would unfold, that he might have chosen differently. Certainly, he’s had options. Having first earned a bachelor’s from Langston University, Franklin graduated from the Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police in 2015 and from the FBI National

“Everyone seemed to elevate and comfort one another to get through it,” said Franklin. When dealing with tragedy, preparing for a presidential visit or the heavily armed Second Amendment March, the TPD, the mayor’s office and other city departments all lend expertise and support “to make it all work,” he noted.

“I wanted to do more, you know, ‘What more can I do to be a part of protecting our country?’”

Franklin’s wife Arquicia has been at his side for his entire law-enforcement career. doing things better,” he said. June 2020 brought more potential powder-keg moments to Tulsa when a hastily organized rally for President Trump was held at the BOK Center. Many citizens viewed it as a COVID super-spreader hazard, and others were angered by the President’s choice to hold the event on Juneteenth, a date that celebrates the emancipation of slaves. The rally date was eventually moved, but tensions in the community remained high. “The more people that are in a confined area, the worse something could be,” Franklin advised. “That was a challenge.” Not long after the Trump rally, Franklin was awakened one night with disturbing news. Two officers had been shot during a traffic stop. The 43-year-old father of two, Sgt. Craig Johnson, died. Officer Aurash Zarkeshan hung onto life by a thread. “I felt like I was sleepwalking through a lot of it because we had not had a tragedy like that in 24 years,” recalled Franklin. He credits a multitude of caring people and trained assistance groups for helping the police department cope with those dark days.

whom he laid down his life. Born during the Great Depression into a devoutly Catholic farming family in Okarche, Oklahoma, young Stanley soon determined he wanted to become a priest. After completing seminary and serving several years in Oklahoma, in 1968 Father Rother received permission to join the Oklahoma Catholic Archdiocese’s mission in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. For nearly 13 years, he would live and work amongst the poverty-stricken native tribe of the Tz’utujil, who are Mayan descendants. Although he had struggled with Latin while in seminary, he nevertheless became fluent in both Spanish and the tribe’s native dialect—even creating a Bible translation in the latter language. He assisted the tribe with both spiritual and practical matters, spearheading the building of a parish hall, hospital and radio station, developing irrigation systems, teaching farming techniques, and even importing a tractor from his family’s farm to assist with local agriculture.

‘THE SHEPHERD CANNOT RUN’ (CONTINUED)

Sue Bond and husband Dr. James Bond used their book proceeds to purchase 3,000 trees for the new Shrine.

“He plowed the fields side-by-side with his parishioners,” Bond said. “He taught them about God with not only words, but by acts of love. He loved the people of his parish, and they loved him.” When a civil war broke out in Guatemala in 1980, the Catholic church was targeted by the government. Violence against the parishioners ensued, and Father Stanley’s name was among those added to the government’s “death list.” At the Oklahoma Archbishop’s request, Rother returned to the States, but soon went back to Guatemala, saying simply “The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger.” Three months later, on July 28, 1981, intruders entered the parish and the beloved priest was martyred. On Dec. 1, 2016, at the request of the Oklahoma Archdiocese, Pope Francis officially recognized Father Rother as a martyr for the faith— the first from the United States and the first U.S.-born priest to be beatified. EXPLORING ALASKA AND ALL IT HAS TO OFFER

I RECENTLY MADE A TRIP TO ALASKA WITH MY SISTER SARAH AND OUR COUSIN KENDRA. We spent several weeks exploring across the central/southeastern area to experience what the last frontier has to offer. We used our Airbnb in Anchorage as a base camp in between adventures. Much of the time spent in Anchorage was for planning the next sights to see, playing board games and cooking excellent meals. There were many trips made to the Kenai Peninsula to take advantage of everything this part of the state has to offer. I spent a few days fishing the Kenai River, where I was able to catch salmon, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden trout, which was a first for me. The best part about fishing this area was observing a mama bear and her cubs feeding in the deep pools where salmon were holding. I could sit all day and watch the cubs dive down for fish and then fight each other for it when one of them got one.

ALASKA: QUICK FACTS Alaska is by far the largest U.S. state by area,

Mountains reflecting off of a lake in Wrangell National Park

comprising more total area than the next three largest states (Texas, California and Montana) combined, and the seventh largest subnational division in the world. While it has one of the smallest state economies in the country, Alaska's per capita income is among the highest, owing to a diversified economy dominated by fishing, natural gas, and oil, all of which it has in abundance. United States armed forces bases and tourism are also a significant part of the economy; more than half the state is federally owned public land, including a multitude of national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges. Of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, 17 are in Alaska. Denali, the highest peak in North America, is 20,320 ft. above sea level. Denali, the Indian name for the peak, means "The Great One." The Yukon River, almost 2,000 miles long, is the third longest river in the United States. There are more than 3,000 rivers in Alaska and over 3 million lakes. The largest, Lake Iliamna, encompasses over 1,000 square miles. Alaska has 6,640 miles of coastline and, including islands, has 33,904 miles of shoreline. Some of Alaska's popular annual events are the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome, World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, the Blueberry Festival and Alaska Hummingbird Festival in Ketchikan, the Sitka Whale Fest, and the Stikine River Garnet Fest in Wrangell. The Stikine River attracts the largest springtime concentration of American bald eagles in the world. Influences on music in Alaska include the traditional music of Alaska Natives as well as folk music brought by later immigrants from Russia and Europe. Prominent musicians from Alaska

SANTA'S ON VACATION BUT WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

“While always believing in the spirit of Santa, we were reminded how to believe like a child does.”

THE BEARD, HAIR, AND ROUND LITTLE BELLY OF THIS SANTA ARE REAL. Bob Bulick, along with his wife Jocelyn, are members of Oklahoma Santas, a chapter of IBRBS, an International organization of Santas and Christmas Performers. She is now the new President-elect of Oklahoma Santas. Both participate regularly in professional performance development while supporting other Claus ambassadors. “Initially we saw it as simply something fun to do as a couple. But something happened, something wonderful, much more important to our community than we ever imagined.”

a fun Christmas card photoshoot; Jocelyn waited until retirement to tap back into her community theater thespian mode and develop Mrs. Jossie Claus. Both create joy by engaging audiences in song, dance, games, and storytelling, besides posing for your memorable photographs. Knighting children into The Order of The Holly, singalongs, relating new North Pole stories, and tuck-ins are just a few of the fun things Jossie likes to do. They recently published MOMMS: The Mountain of Mis-Matched Socks, a heartwarming, beautifully illustrated Christmas book. All children bring their toy lists and tell Santa their wishes, and so do a few adults. “While always believing in the spirit of Santa, we were reminded how to believe like a child does. For us; we are not the Clauses, I am simply an old man with a big beard, a red suit and Jossie is a retired college administrator. But our hearts have grown three sizes since beginning this adventure. We are not the Clauses, but we get to represent the best that there is. We are not Santa and Mrs. Claus until a child recognizes us and then we are all of that, and more. Through Santa’s eyes we get to see hope and joy we never thought was so abundant.”
