The Importance of Exhibit Books at Trial exhibits are then topically organized, marked by letter or number, and batestamped. A cover sheet at the front of the exhibit book denotes whether the exhibit was offered, admitted, or rejected. In most cases, it makes sense to organize the exhibits topically. In a divorce, there can be many issues like property and debt division, child custody, child support, spousal support, attorneys’ fees, and even marital misconduct. Having all exhibits of a specific topic next to each other is more organized. Presenting witnesses in the general order in which the exhibits are in the exhibit book can also be considered. The last exhibit on each topic should entail a bookend exhibit where the judge can clearly see what the party is requesting. This includes child support calculations, proposed custody schedule or parenting, proposed property and debt division, etc. Organization is key at trial. Having a lawyer who carefully considers the order and manner in which evidence is presented and submitted is important. Having copies of exhibit books for the witness stand, opposing coun-

Most divorce and family cases settle before trial. To achieve this, parties should aim to send a settlement offer. It makes sense in most cases to settle once the terms are within the margin of error versus litigating a case where there is nothing to be gained. However, not all cases settle. Some parties are unable to reach an agreement that makes sense for them both. In other cases, the parties’ viewpoints on what is reasonable are so opposite of the other that settling is impossible. When parties cannot settle, the only way to resolve the case is to try it. Organization at trial can go a long way in helping a party receive a better result. Judges hear lots of cases, so to obtain the best chance at a positive result, it is vital to present the case in a coherent manner. One way to be organized is for a lawyer to have an exhibit book put together before trial. An exhibit book generally involves all exhibits being bound in a three-hole binder before trial. The

sel, the guardian ad litem, and judge can also help. The lawyer can refer to the exhibit number and page number of an exhibit when a witness is on the stand. By doing this, everybody in the courtroom can reference the relevant page. Judges can also take these books with them after a trial. As a judge weighs a case, it can be a useful tool for them to have all the exhibits organized in a bound book. The easier a lawyer makes this for a judge, the better. An exhibit book can also shorten the trial time. Time is wasted in court when parties struggle to figure out which exhibit is being referenced and its page number. Having an organized book helps eliminate confusion in the courtroom. When a trial takes less time because a lawyer is organized, most judges are happier. Clients also incur less in legal fees the less time a trial takes. As the clock strikes 11 a.m., Meyer addresses each child by name before she hands out maracas for them to join in. Old favorites like “You are my Sunshine” and “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” have kids singing and even busting a move. After a few favorites, Meyer settles in to book time. But it doesn’t feel like a traditional story time. Meyer interacts with the children during the story asking their thoughts and observations. The kids are as integral to story time as Meyer is, but she insists it’s them who give her the most joy. “I get so much from their enthusiasm and smiles.”

"Music has always been a part of my life," exclaims Meyer.

YOU KNOW THEM BEST AS SOUTHERN SAFE ROOMS, BUT WHAT YOU PROBABLY DON’T REALIZE IS THAT THIS COMPANY GOES BACK FURTHER THAN STATEHOOD. In 1904, founder J.W. Tidwell established Southern Cornice Works, which primarily supplied the flourishing oil industry with its sheet metal needs, such as tanks built specifically for water. The company then began to supply ducts for the growing field of forced-air heating. But what really set the company apart was a patent developed for a revolving ventilator, a forerunner to the ventilators many homes have today. But, it was a Joplin, Missouri, tornado in 2011 that inspired what they’re most well-known for – Southern Safe Rooms. That horrific storm motivated them to design and build storm shelters using the company’s expertise in metal working. With the assistance of outside engineering consultants, the company designed affordable and well-built storm shelters. The final product was debris-tested at Texas Tech University’s Wind Science and Engineering Research Center using 2x4’s flying at 100 mph. Since that time, Southern Safe Mike and David Tidwell proudly display one of their safe rooms.

metal for walls, floor and roof and doors that open inward so they aren’t blocked by storm debris. Removable hinges on the inside also give it an extra layer of safety. While there are prefabricated rooms ready to install, they can design anything to meet individualized or commercial needs. But what is the key to owning a successful business starting its 117th year? David Tidwell, who is the fourth generation heading the company says, “An integral part of our success and longevity are our employees, many of whom have been here at least 25 years and have been instrumental in sustaining the company.”

Southern Safe Rooms began as Southern Cornice Works when it opened its doors in 1904.

OTHER HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: + Currently, the hotel houses four food and beverage outlets (open to both hotel guests and the public): Basin Bar, OKC Tap House, Bob’s Steak & Chop House and Park Grounds. Three other venues are slated to open soon: Seltzer’s Modern Diner, Catbird Seat (the poolside bar) and Double Double Burger Bar. At OKC Tap House, we ordered one of its signature pizzas, along with two sandwiches—the Pork Banh Mi, a Vietnamese-inspired sandwich generously topped with fresh cilantro, and the Chicken Teriyaki—all of which were quite tasty. Before leaving the next morning, we sampled the delicious coffee at Park Grounds, which is billed as a “neighborhood espresso bar, ice cream shop, bakery and deli”; the shop features everything from micro-roasted artisanal coffee drinks and locally sourced ice cream to fork-and-plate pastries and savory sandwiches.
