THE TOY STORE A TRIP TO THE TOY STORE IS ALWAYS FUN. There are so many toys to choose from! According to ARBetterBeginnings.com, following the guidelines below will point you in the right direction when choosing a toy. SAFETY FIRST - Toys should match a child’s developmental level and age, be clean and have no sharp corners or small, detachable parts. LONG-LASTING - To survive a child’s repeated handling, a toy must be made of stable and solid materials. EASY TO USE - A child must be able to work a toy by himself in order to enjoy it. ENTERTAINMENT VALUE - Ideally, a child should find a toy fun to play with now and as she grows. Look for toys that a child can play with in many ways. EDUCATIONAL VALUE - Play teaches a child to think, create and imagine. Choose toys that allow for pretending, role-playing, problem-solving and practicing skills. SOCIAL VALUE - Children learn important social skills, like cooperation, negotiation and compromise, by playing with other children. For older children choose toys that they can use with others.

Ho, Ho, Hoax NAUGHTY PHONE SCAMMERS ARE TRYING TO STEAL YOUR MONEY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
‘TIS THE SEASON FOR DECKING THE HALLS, SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS, AND FRAUDULENT PHONE SCAMMERS. They seek to steal your money or personal information through phone calls made by real people, robocalls, or text messages. Detective Elizabeth Weatherly with the Tulsa Police Department’s Financial Crimes division has the following tips to avoid being taken advantage of by holiday phone scammers. THE GRANDPARENTS SCAM One popular scam during the holidays is the “Grandparents Scam” where a scammer will call late at night pretending to be a grandchild in need of help. They will say they are in jail, in the hospital, or having car trouble and need money right away. The scammer will try to keep you on the phone and get your credit card or bank information. The best thing to do is to hang up and call your relative to verify, even if it sounds like them. GIFT CARD SCAM In these scams, a seller will ask you to send them a pre-paid gift card number and PIN. But instead of using that gift card for your payment, the scammer will steal the funds and you will never receive the item. Remember, gift cards are gifts, not for paying someone. “This is how a scammer will avoid prosecution because they can claim your payment is a gift. Report gift card scams to the card issuer, the police, and the Federal Trade Commission,” says Detective Weatherly. 26

Nourishing Things To Do While Going Through A Divorce Going through a divorce can be a stressful experience. For many, it can feel like their life and the life of their kids are hanging in the balance. The uncertainty can cause lots of clients to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Instead of engaging in unproductive activity, it is important that individuals take positive steps to move forward. Taking positive steps can take an individual’s mind off the divorce and put them in a better place when they have to make decisions in their case. An individual going through a divorce must nourish their mind and soul. For everybody, there may be different ways to do so. However, below are some possibilities: Exercising: Physical activity can often help somebody relax and feel better. Whether jogging, biking, lifting weights, yoga, or other physical activity, getting some exercise can help raise morale and make somebody feel relaxed and energized. Spirituality: Obviously, faith and beliefs are different for everybody. But if you enjoy going to church, a synagogue, mosque or temple, it is crucial
to keep that in your schedule. One going through a divorce may often think about leaning into that more than before and engaging in social gatherings there as well. Having faith and hope in something beyond yourself can help ease your worry. In addition, being around other optimistic individuals with faith can often be helpful. For those who are not religious, it might mean time engaging in yoga, meditating or other relaxation. Friends & Family: Spending time with positive friends and family members can also help an individual get to a better place. Having a support system around in the middle of a divorce is essential. So, do not be afraid to reach out to those that care about you. Hobbies: If there are hobbies an individual enjoys that ease the mind, it can be vital to spend time doing those activities. Whether it’s getting into nature, going to movies, attending sporting events, decorating, cooking or any other hobby or recreational activity, it’s essential to get out and enjoy life. Read and Listen to Podcasts: Books and podcasts can be important for those going through a divorce. This can be particularly true if these books and podcasts are uplifting. The beauty of podcasts is that many of these can be
found online for free. Therapy: A divorce is often a traumatic experience. Those going through a divorce should think long and hard about seeing a therapist to help work through the pain and anguish of a divorce. The best therapists are excellent listeners who can also provide guidance and critical insight. While most know that divorce is conceptually hard, it’s hard to really understand it until one goes through it. For this reason, it is vital to take positive steps and engage in activity that is nourishing. The above examples are just some possibilities for those to consider who are going through a divorce. Indeed other individuals might find different ways to raise their morale during a divorce. GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have
Anna Sarol
otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
