FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS, CHARLES NICHOLS, OWNER OF NICHTECH ROOFING SYSTEMS, HAS BEEN INSTALLING ROOFS WHICH STAND THE TEST OF TIME KEEPING HOMES WARM AND DRY. With spring now in the air, and the high winds and hail it always brings with it, roof damage is a certainty. For those who may soon find themselves in the aftermath of Mother Nature’s tantrums, we thought a bit of information about those time-tested roofs might be nice to know. Below are some of the most asked questions Nichols receives about Nichtech’s storm-proof roofs.

SINCE THE ROOFS ARE METAL, ARE THEY NOISY? No. You will not hear any more noise than you will with an asphalt shingle roof. However, if there is hail, you will hear that, but you will also hear noise through a traditional roof as well. The stone-coated steel which makes up the roofs have a granulated surface like an asphalt roof and that dampens the noise.

WILL THE METAL ROOF CAUSE ONE TO GET A LIGHTNING STRIKE? There is no scientific proof that metal roofs increase the odds of a lightning strike. I have never had a client inform me they have had their roof struck by lightning.

ARE METAL ROOFS HOTTER THAN TRADITIONAL ROOFS? The best way to explain this is by exposing the myth that a lighter shaded roof will reflect sunlight. The reality is that in order for something to be reflective, it must be smooth. There is no asphalt shingle that is smooth. So a straight metal roof without stone coating would be more reflective, but there is very little difference in surface temperature between an asphalt shingle roof and a stone coated steel roof.

DISCOUNT FOR METAL ROOFS? Yes. I cannot say that every company does, but the top three largest ones do. However, they may require a waiver be signed for small cosmetic damage such as dings. Depending upon where you live in the state of Oklahoma, that discount could be as much as 28 percent off the homeowner’s premium.

HOW RESILIENT ARE YOUR METAL ROOFS TO DAMAGE LIKE HAIL AND WIND? The stone-coated steel is unique because of its rigid construction, which gives it its strength plus the added stone coated surface. So even if the roof is damaged with dents, you will never see it. And because they are metal, they will not burn or crack and have a written warranty for 2.5 inch hail and up to 120 mph winds or equal to an F-2 tornado.

WHAT IS THE COST OF YOUR METAL ROOF SYSTEM COMPARED TO A TRADITIONAL ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOF? They are more expensive. It’s about double the cost of the shingle system that contractors use in new homes. There are two important factors though to consider. The first is that the cost of asphalt rises every single year. The second is that stone-coated metal roofs are a forever product. They never need replacing. I tell people that if they do not plan to stay in a home for longer than ten years, they should purchase asphalt. But if it is a forever home, a metal roof will more than pay for itself. I should also mention that though asphalt roofs are designed to last over 30 years, the average life span for one in Oklahoma is only nine years due to the weather conditions.

Teresa Knox ENTREPRENEUR The restoration and renovation of Harwelden Mansion and The Church Studio is the current passion of Tulsa entrepreneur Teresa Knox. Her involvement in commercial property acquisition and historical preservation comes after many years in career and technical education. Knox is the founder and former CEO of Community Care College, Clary Sage College, and Oklahoma Technical College. In 2015, she converted the schools into a nonprofit called Community HigherEd and now serves on the executive board.

Most recently, Knox purchased Harwelden Mansion and is restoring it to its original Tudor-Gothic design.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1920s mansion was a private residence and in later years, home to many arts organizations. When completed, the mansion, gardens, and carriage house will serve as a boutique hotel and events center.

The Church Studio, built in 1915 as one of Tulsa’s first integrated churches at 304 S. Trenton, was turned into a world-class recording studio in 1972 by Leon Russell. A devoted fan of Russell, Knox purchased the building and is restoring it to be a recording studio, theater, and community space. She and her husband Ivan Acosta worked nearly a year getting it listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its historical significance to Tulsa and the music industry.

Lori Carver CEO Lori Carver is the president and CEO of Mazzio’s LLC based in Tulsa. Carver joined the Italian food chain in 2012 as the chief financial officer and stepped up to the senior position in 2018. Carver graduated from SMU with a degree in accounting and became a CPA in 1994. After working as an auditor at Arthur Andersen LLP in Houston and Baltimore, Carver moved to Tulsa in 2004 while working for Barton Cotton, Inc. as CFO. Today, Mazzio’s has 140 restaurants in 10 states and employs more than 1,500 with 850 in Tulsa. The restaurant chain supports the Tulsa United Way, No Kid Hungry, Child Abuse Network, Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, Route 66 Marathon, Oklahoma Soccer Association and dozens of local schools, booster clubs and faith-based organizations.

In her personal time, Carver is the leader of a Girl Scout troop, sings in the choir at South Tulsa Baptist Church and serves as the church treasurer. She also volunteers as a counselor for youth at camps and mission trips.

PUBLIC SERVANT Khara Rogers is the community relations officer for the Tulsa Police Activity League (TPAL) and was named Tulsa Police Officer of the Year at the 2019 Above and Beyond Awards sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tulsa.

Influenced by her father who was a police officer in Norman, Oklahoma, Rogers chose a career in police work after seeing the impact his work had on the community.

She joined TPAL to help build positive relationships between youth, police officers and the community to prevent crime.

Recently, she was given a pink police car to celebrate her work ethic and to provide visibility in the community. She credits Major Travis Yates for the TPAL program which he created in 2007. “He has allowed me the freedom to explore different organizations and program ideas to find the right fit of TPAL at its infancy.” TPAL offers recreational, educations, enrichment and mentoring programs for youth ages 7 to 17 at no cost.

The Rotary Club of Tulsa’s Above and Beyond Awards, founded in 2008, recognize Tulsa’s police officer and firefighter of the year for outstanding acts of character, commitment and compassion to both their profession and community.

Kelly Meeks FIREFIGHTER AND MEDIC Kelly Meeks is the winner of the E. Stanley Hawkins Firefighter of the Year award in Tulsa.

Nominated for the award by her peers, Meeks received the honor at the annual Above and Beyond Awards event conducted by the Rotary Club of Tulsa.

Meeks has served as a firefighter for 11 years. She is stationed at two firehouses serving the Tulsa airport where she is also participating in FAA Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighter training.

Meeks graduated from OSU with a degree in Human Nutrition, but her true calling was to help others which led her to become a firefighter and medic.

In her personal life, Meeks volunteers for the Little Light House as a classroom helper for children with special needs, and for Meals on Wheels where she delivers nutritious meals and provides wellness checks to home bound seniors.

The firefighter of the year award is named after former Tulsa Fire Chief E. Stanley Hawkins who served the department for 37 years – 21 of those as chief.

She found her match in Washington state’s award-winning Columbia Valley.

“Handpicked grapes cost more to harvest but it is important to me to use workers with the skill and knowledge to pick only ripe, healthy grapes to ensure the quality of the wines,” says Hendershot.

FROSE ingredients: ++ 25 oz of Downward Dog Rosé ++ ¼ cup Coppermuse Strawberry Vodka ++ 8 oz strawberries trimmed, hulled, and quartered ++ ½ cup simple syrup ++ 5 Tbl lemon juice directions: 1. Pour Rosé into a shallow pan and freeze for at least 6 hours until almost solid.

2. Add the frozen Rosé to a blender with the vodka, lemon juice, strawberries, and simple syrup.

3. Blend all ingredients together and serve!

You can use mint for a garnish.
