Fall into October
T
he changing of the colors from vibrant, summery greens to autumnal yellows, rusty oranges and dark reds.
OCTOBER 2017 PUBLISHER
The shorter days spent at school and outside and the cooled-off weather after those dreaded dog days of summer. The smell and crunch of freshly-fallen leaves, the taste of warm apple cider and perfect pumpkin pastries—so much pumpkin. The windows-open Saturday football days and the chili-in-theCrock-Pot Sunday football afternoons.

Jackson Ave. Named a Top Ten Oktoberfest by USA Today and Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, Linde Oktoberfest features 40,000 square feet of decorated entertainment and bier Zelts (tents), with more than 80 bier selections, authentic German food, live music, an arts and crafts MarktHaus, carnival rides, and German-themed games and pop-up activities. General admission tickets are $10 at the gate or $7 in advance, and admission is free for children 12 and younger. Free Family Friday offers free admission on October 20 until 4 p.m. Advance tickets, VIP packages, Friends and Family packages, the popular Autobahn pack, MaßKrugs (pronounced “Moss Krooghs”) and more are available for purchase at TulsaOktoberfest.org. New for 2017 is the Thursday night Zelt Crawl, featuring admission, a 5oz mini mug and unlimited tastes from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “Fall is fast approaching, and Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa is right around the corner,” said Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. “Linde Oktoberfest offers four days of Bavarian – styled fun for everyone, with proceeds benefitting River Parks, one of Tulsa’s most-cherished assets.” Three bands will travel from Germany to perform at Linde Oktoberfest: Dorfrocker, Edelweiss Show Band, and Sepp Diepholder. A full lineup of German bands from Florida, Texas and Ohio are scheduled along with local Tulsa favorites. Das Glockenspiel will return featuring live performances every hour from their double decker stage with specialty drinks served from a full-service bar below. The expanded kids’ area, Das KinderPlatz, will host an entertainment Zelt, Das JugendZelt, and Grünflächen (green space) for families to gather throughout the day. Das JugendZelt will offer a variety of activities and entertainment for children each day, including magic shows, live music, a science show, Lego building, sand art, face painting and more.

The commemorative bier stein will be offered again this year. The German Maßkrug is a one-litre (33.8 fl ounce) stein designed to closely resemble those found in Bavarian bier gardens and bier halls and is a staple of the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. hen you first see a John Hammer painting, it’s normally the character in
the piece that draws you in. After looking at it for a bit longer, you may realize it’s the bright, unconventional colors that makes the painting special. Hammer is a Pop Impressionist. His portraits of real and fictitious people run the gamut from Woody Guthrie, Will Rogers, Maya Angelou and Michelle Obama to Batman, Darth Vader, Steve Zissou from The Life Aquatic and “The Dude” from The Big Lebowski. He’s even painted exotic versions of the Golden Driller and the Blue Whale of Catoosa – both northeast Oklahoma roadside landmarks. His work is bold and bright. Some of his

characters’ rosy cheeks are colored with bright blue and green hues. Skin tones are purple. The highlights and wrinkles in faces are purple and white. But, when you see a Hammer character, you know exactly who it is. After a field trip to a museum in second grade, Hammer was motivated to begin sketching. He first drew black and white pictures of horses, his grandparents, and characters from MAD and Cracked magazines. In high school, he drew pictures of his favorite rock band, KISS, which he sold to his friends for fifty cents apiece. He kept on drawing and progressed through college ultimately graduating with a commercial art degree from the OSU Institute of Technology (OSUIT) in Okmulgee. Post college, Hammer created hand drawn illustrations and cartoons for Tulsa’s Uptown News. After working at an ad agency in California for a few years, he moved back to Tulsa and worked in commercial art for Ad Inc., CONTINUED >

I knew what I needed to do with my career,” said Hammer. “I would pick up the brush and be a painter.” Hammer opened The Hammer Studio and began working prolifically. His first showing was a 5x5 exhibition at the Tulsa Artists’ Coalition (TAC) Gallery in the Brady District in Tulsa.

While painting a portrait of Pugsley from The Addams Family television show for the exhibition, he attempted to shadow Pugsley’s face in a realistic manner. What Hammer created was a young Pugsley with green cheeks and yellow eyes … a zombie-like version of the lad. But something about it worked. It was then that he started using fantastic colors in faces … a trademark style for Hammer. Using only acrylic paint, he has now evolved to painting impressionistic abstracts with pure intense colors in Hammeresque style. He paints in both small and large format ranging from 25 square inches to 25 square feet. His work can be seen regularly on exhibit throughout the Brady Arts District and on his Facebook page at @TheHammerStudio. Other installations of his paintings include a permanent display of 30 images at OSUIT in Okmulgee, portraits of Woody Guthrie and Will Rogers at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa and the Will Rogers Memorial and Museum in Claremore, and a painting of a guitar displayed in the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa. And, if you ever make it to the home of “Weird Al” Yankovic on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, you will see one of Hammer’s portraits of Yankovic commemorating the 25th anniversary of the film UHF. big physical change.
Lance Parkhill is in the process of putting the finishing touches on the new, 20,500-squarefoot Parkhill’s Liquor & Wines, which is due to open in early November just east of the businesses’ longstanding home. And Parkhill has designed the store to take full advantage of the sweeping changes in the state alcohol laws when they go into effect next year. “Overall this change is exciting,” he said. “The upcoming liquor law changes combined with the new building will bring some fresh energy into our current business model.”
The new store will allow Parkhill to bring to midtown the tasting
room concept Parkhill’s wife Tina incorporated into her store in south Tulsa. A 3,000-square-foot area upstairs will host private tastings of
beers, wines or select liquors, to give the uninitiated a chance to learn about tequilas or scotch, for instance. Parkhill also plans to rent out the space for private tastings and donate the space so that charities can hold their own tastings. “We haven’t opened the new store and I’ve got people calling wanting to rent the tasting room already,” he said. At a total of 20,500 square feet, the new store isn’t much larger than the original 18,000-square-foot location. But it will still provide the opportunity for Parkhill to expand the stock, as the new space was designed from the ground up as a liquor store. “The current store was originally a grocery store,” he said. “We’ve remodeled many times, but there are still nooks and crannies we haven’t been able to use.” Parkhill said while the Fikes Shopping Center served the store well over the years, he’s looking forward to working in a fresh, modern new space. The exterior of the store features cool grays and clean lines, similar to his wife’s store in south Tulsa.

We’re a middle-class family. We live by a budget. And we take care of our money so we can take care of our child. But as our daughter grew older and wiser, taking care of her meant giving her challenging classes and an ambitious curriculum, an engaged learning community, AND exceptional extracurricular opportunities.

ilization it would seem. To take it one step further, this also means that brewing has been around that long as well. This process of turning hops, barley and yeast into what is now the most widely consumed alcoholic drink in the world, spawned what is known as the brewmaster. Basically, this is just what it sounds like…the master over the brewing process; a natural chemist who uses nature’s bounty to concoct a taste that is unique, flavorful and Robust. With over 5,500 breweries in the US and 27 in Oklahoma, it’s easy to see that tastes do vary. Most probably do not have a monogamous relationship with one label when there are so many beautiful lagers and ales that fancy our taste. In the past however, it had been the fairly run of the mill marriage between tasters’ palates and one of the classics like Coors, Budweiser or Miller. But as time passed, tasters began to crave a mistress. Tulsa beer brewing lovers were more than happy to introduce potential desires to beer enthusiasts by feeding those cravings through a new area of brewing and marketing dubbed craft beers.

begun to warm up though. Then in the early 2000s, Huebert Brewing in Oklahoma City began operation as did Krebs Company with Shock Brewing in McAlester. The fuse was burning away and the popular idea of locals everywhere having favorable options to brew their own beer had begun. The keg had been ignited! These companies were able to then begin targeting state laws for changes that made it illegal to produce and sell beer over 3.2 percent alcohol and the localities where that beer could be sampled and sold.

Eventually, through the insistence of a friend, Marshall was persuaded that it was time to come home and be on the frontlines of what was certainly going to be a craft beer explosion in the Midwest. Marshall’s Brewing Company was home!
BEER 101
In 2012 St. Louis native Brian Welzbacher took notice that the
beer culture in Tulsa was almost non-existent; a small blimp on the radar, he said. Hailing from St. Louis, he was raised in an environment where brewing beer was part of the community identity. He decided it was time to remedy this and help bring attention to those brewing enthusiasts who were working to bring craft beers to Oklahoma. He began networking with other "beer geeks” in the area where they could come together, try the new beers that locals were producing and discuss aspects ranging from tastes to legislative issues pertaining to the laws governing brewing. This spurned his website, Beer is OK. The site initially began as a platform to inform people about beer in Oklahoma through blogging. The following year he kicked off OklahomaCraftBeer.com. Through this endeavor he began doing podcasts about the history of breweries in the state and the people behind them. Using his graphic design background, Welzbacher began creating merchandise such as t-shirts, stickers and hats to sell on his site that promoted craft beers in Oklahoma. As his enterprise grew, he split the sites with BeerisOK.com being the retail site and the OklahomaCraftBeer.com site becoming the information tool for craft beer enthusiasts to catch up on the newest breweries, their beers and the impact craft beer is making on the community. He is passionate about educating people about beer. Not just the science of brewing but also about the realities and difficulties these breweries face financially, legally and logistically.
IT’S BEER:30
“Anytime someone says they’re in it for the
money, they’re lying. Brewing is a hard job like anything else or digging ditches. It’s a form of art and people are putting their blood, sweat and soul into creating these beers. I think one of the reasons craft beers have gained such popularity

Rounding out the menu options are a rotation of daily all-natural soups and savory shareable appetizers such as the Warm Herbed Goat Cheese or Urban Zest. In addition to progressive food options, guests can also enjoy wine by the glass or bottle and locally brewed beer on draft. The restaurant will also offer Folded Flats, a sandwich-style offering filled with fresh meats, cheeses and veggies, for catering orders. “We’re excited about opening in Tulsa. It’s a dynamic city with a fast-growing restaurant scene. We’re confident that the Cherry Street area is a prime location for everyone to come enjoy what Crushed Red has to offer,” said co-founder and Chief Development Officer Powell Kalish. “This is an exceptional place and we look forward to introducing everyone here to our hand-crafted salads and fresh-baked pizzas. We’re growing fast and are excited about the milestone expansion into Oklahoma.” In addition to artisan-crafted menu items, Crushed Red is also committed to running every restaurant as a sustainable operation, meaning it creates little-to-no waste. Crushed Red utilizes LED lights, recyclable batteries, paper instead of plastic bags, hand dryers versus paper towels, beverages served in glass bottles, compostable linen trays, real silverware and glassware in place of plastic ware, washable linens, and more to keep waste at a very minimal level. The new restaurant will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and can be reached at 918.960.2015.
About Crushed Red Based in St. Louis, Crushed Red is carving out a distinct niche in the fast-casual restaurant segment dubbed “Artisan Fast.” Founded in 2012 by award-winning restaurateur Chris LaRocca, Crushed Red began franchising in 2014 and serves up chopped-to-order salads, artisan-crafted whole-grain pizzas, all-natural soups and savory appetizers in an elevated fast-casual atmosphere.
