It all happened so quickly I was at an appointment and stepped out because I couldn’t catch my breath. My inhaler wasn’t working. Gasping for air, I suddenly felt myself sliding down the wall. Someone called 911, and I was taken by ambulance to Hillcrest South. After a quick examination, the specially trained Emergency Department team identified the problem and worked to open my airway. I was having a life-threatening asthma attack caused by an allergic reaction. While treating me, the caring staff kept me calm and reassured me that I would be okay. I’m so grateful for their compassion and expertise. They saved my life.

t’s been a wonderful year. First I want to tell you what I’m thankful for. Then I’ll ask for some big presents to come our way on Christmas morning. I’m thankful for friends and family who keep a smile on my face every day. I’m happy to have celebrated their achievements this year including two graduations, three new jobs and even an engagement! I’m thankful for my sweet rescue dog, Ellie. Who knew a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel that eats acorns from the driveway would be so cuddly, loving and cute? I don’t even mind the giant red spheres of hair that skip and float across my hardwoods on the regular!

ince 1905, Citizens Bank of Oklahoma has served as a dependable resource for residents of Osage County and those in the Tulsa area. That tradition isn’t changing. What’s new is the name -- starting this month, Citizens Bank of Oklahoma will now be known as Blue Sky Bank. Gentner Drummond, principal owner of Blue Sky Bank, said part of the reason for the change is to differentiate the institution from other banks with “citizens” in their names. “We did multiple studies and found there’s a lot of name confusion and ambiguity in the banking industry,” he said. magine you have to run a race. But there are a few other things you have to know before you hear the shotgun start. This race is for endurance, not speed. There lies no track so you don't know the way. No one to tell you where to go....plus there are unidentified land mines you have to run around. Now, imagine doing this blindfolded. This is how Gregg Heller feels every day. Gregg is a father to Kyra, a beautiful 13-year-old girl. Kyra happens to be gifted. When you see her volunteering at ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) every Saturday, you would never know of what she is capable. The other children assisting are polite, friendly, and very knowledgeable. When you speak to Kyra, you know immediately that she is extremely intelligent....more so than the average teenager. Why? Her memory is photographic. The wiggling dog she is holding, Wolfe, was born a day before her birthday. In fact, she knows the

names and birth dates of the 20 plus animals she is assisting every Saturday. She never picks up a sheet more than once to read it while customers are speaking with her. It is incredible. By the way, if you were wondering, typical recall of the average person is up to 7 digits or phrases. In 1944, pediatrician, Hans Asperger referred to these genius children as “little professors.” According to a study of 8 gifted children, “working memory isn't just the ability to remember long strings of numbers. Kyra has a lot to learn about her talents as she matures—the life of a gifted person is typically full of frustration as they learn to navigate both talents and triggers. Kyra’s current diagnosis is ADHD and autism. She has been tested 4 times but each time her diagnosis has changed. ixby couple Bobby Zigmont and Sharon Phillips Zigmont were always destined for each other. But it took 16 years to get there.

Bobby, a Bixby police officer, and Sharon, a FOX23 news reporter, met in their teens. She was a senior at Jenks High School and he was the older college guy...who was dating her best friend. "It was the summer of my senior year and I was at my friend's house for a party. As soon as he walked in the door, I knew I was going to marry him some day," she says. Her friend went back to college and started dating someone else. Sharon seized the opportunity and called Bobby. But like many young romances it ended after only three months.

REMEMBER ME? Sixteen years later, Sharon was working in San Diego, California when her mother casually asked her if there was anyone from her past that she would like to keep in touch with, and she immediately thought of Bobby. She sent him a Facebook friend request and the rest, as they say, is history. Bobby says, "She was always on my mind. I remember years before being at my parents house with the TV on behind my back when I heard her voice. I turned around and she was on the air. I didn't see what channel CONTINUED >

it was so I went online and scoured all the networks but couldn't find anything." She says, "That was in my early media days when I was a news producer. I was occasionally on the air but my name wasn't listed on the website." He says, "I knew I had missed my chance, but fast forward a few more years and I was in the same place at my parents' house when she came on the air again. I was in another relationship at the time and didn't act on it but I was so glad to see her doing well," he says. In 2008, he was single again and thought of reconnecting with Sharon. He looked on the FOX23 website and read her bio. He says, "I thought about emailing her a note. Something like, 'Hey, you might not remember me, but..." He hesitated thinking she gets creepy guys sending her notes all the time. He looked her up on Facebook and saw a photo of her with someone else and assumed she was married with kids and left it alone. But then on a sunny spring day, he received a Facebook message from Sharon that said, "Hey, you might not remember me, but..."

GIVING BACK The Zigmonts have been married for four years now and have a beautiful daughter, Aerilyn. They both have demanding, stressful careers and may be called upon at a moment's notice. As a news journalist, Sharon rushes to where the news is happening and may be gone for hours. It can be hard to decompress after a difficult day. Sharon says, "I'll call or text Bobby that I've had a bad day and he'll have a bubble bath waiting for me with candles, music, and a glass of wine. He's wonderful about doing things like that, so when I come home I can relax and enjoy our family time." As a police officer and SWAT Team member, Bobby has a stressful and dangerous job. He says the best way to reduce stress is communicating quickly if he has a bad day.

He says, "For me, talking about an unpleasant event right after it happens at the scene or talking with Sharon later at home flushes it out of my mind allowing me to move forward. Physical activity helps me, too. For years my outlet was coaching youth soccer and playing on a mens soccer league, but now I enjoy working out with FIT First Responders." FIT First Responders Foundation was founded by Coach Jonathan Conneely and empowers Tulsa’s first responders to be their best through fitness, nutrition, and creating a winning mindset. It was created to provide police officers, firefighters, and all those who serve as a first responder. Bobby says, "It's a great non-profit organization. It allows us to work out with other first responders who understand our challenges which is a great stress reliever." The Zigmonts are both active in the local community. Sharon is involved with CureSearch Walk benefiting CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, a national non-profit foundation that accelerates the search for cures for children’s cancer. Bobby is the Chairman for the Bixby PASS (Positive Actions for Safe Students) Coalition. The organization started as a teacher-based group and has since evolved into a community-based organization. Bixby PASS Coalition partners with the Tulsa Health Department and Bixby Optimist Club to provide educational opportunities on the dangers of substance and alcohol abuse.

JOY IN THE CAUSE Both Bobby and Sharon share a love for Joy in the Cause. Sharon's mother, Debbie Phillips, is best friends with Lisa Bain, the founder of the charity. The charity began from lessons learned when Bain's mother was diagnosed with cancer. Joy in the Cause provides care, compassion, and personal acts of kindness to those with life altering illness and special needs. Sharon says, "Lisa dresses up her bulldog Mavis Pearl in tutus and brings her to

the hospital to brighten a patient's day. She created little stuffed bulldogs and takes them to nursing homes, cancer treatment centers, and children's hospitals. It simply exploded. Now, Mavis Pearl dolls are in Afghanistan and Iraq." Bain says, "Care comes in all shapes and sizes. It may be through the comfort of an unhurried conversation and visit, or therapy dog visit from Mavis Pearl. It could be receiving the gift of a house cleaning, grocery card, or bill payment. Support looks different for every person going through a life altering illness or those facing special needs. Bain reached out to Bobby for Joy To The Rescue – Project: Kids In Crisis which equips first responders with resources to soothe a child’s fear. Bobby introduced Bain to the Bixby Police Chief and now each Bixby police car is equipped with backpacks which contain an Usborne book, Mavis Pearl coloring book and stuffed dog, colored pencils, special t-shirt, and other donated items.

HOLIDAY CHEER For Christmas, time will be spent celebrating with both sides of the family; with Bobby's family on Christmas Eve and Sharon's family on Christmas Day. They both are looking forward to homes full of kids, laughter, and food. Bobby says, "My mom is a Southern Bell from Arkansas and most of her food is comfort food. She makes the most amazing dressing. My sister and I would always beg for that, and her turkey gravy with diced up eggs that you pour on top of it." "I'm the oldest of five and love holiday dinners. But the best part for me is the leftovers a few hours after the big meal. My brothers and I would love to grab some turkey or ham and put it on the little dinner rolls," she says. The Zigmonts are grateful for their many blessings. But most of all, they are thankful for the uncertain path taken to find each other.

HAPPY HANUKKAH! Traditions Light Up the Holiday

ften referred to as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah is an eight day celebration that begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev (a date that falls anywhere from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar). This year, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 24th and lasts until January 1st. Hanukkah marks the victory of the Jews, led by the Maccabees, against Greek persecution and religious oppression. When the Maccabees came to rededicate the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, they found only one flask of oil with which to light the menorah (a special candelabra). Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, leaving time to find a fresh supply. Hanukkah is a time for celebrating with family and friends gathering nightly to remember and honor this miracle by lighting one candle of the menorah each night of the holiday, enjoying traditional holiday foods, singing songs, playing games, and exchanging gifts. LIGHTING THE MENORAH

Lighting the Menorah is the main Hanukkah tradition. It has nine branches, one for each night of the Festival of Lights, plus a shamash, meaning helper or attendant, which is lit first and then used to light the other candles. The shamash always sits a bit higher or lower than the rest of the candles so as to not get confused with 36

the others. The candles are placed on the menorah from right to left, the same direction in which one reads Hebrew. However, when lighting the menorah you move in the opposite direction, using the shamash to the light the candles from left to right. Blessings are recited before or after the candles are lit depending on tradition. EATING FRIED FOODS

The miracle of the oil lasting eight days is not only celebrated through the lighting of the menorah, but also in the traditional foods that are eaten. Deep-fried in oil, latkes (fried potato pancakes) are the most popular Hanukkah food topped with applesauce or sour cream. Beef brisket, short ribs, and noodle kugel will likely be on the menu along with dairy products, especially cheese, in commemoration of the Jewish heroine Judith (Yehudit), who helped secure an important military victory with the aid of her homemade cheese. Hanukkah desserts may include decorated holiday sugar cookies, cupcake menorahs, and most importantly, traditional sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts).

SPINNING THE DREIDEL

Another tradition of the holiday is playing dreidel, a gambling game played with a square top. During the time of Antiochus' oppression, those who wanted to study Torah (an illegal activity) would conceal their activity by playing gambling games with a top whenever an official or inspector was within sight. A dreidel is marked with four Hebrew letters: Nun, Gimel, Hei, and Shin. These letters stand for the Hebrew phrase "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham", a great miracle happened there, referring to the miracle of the oil. Gelt, which are chocolate coins covered with tin foil, are part of this game. GIVING GIFTS

Although giving children money has been a part of Hanukkah for a few centuries, the giving of presents is a relatively new practice due to its close proximity to Christmas. Gifts range from traditional books, dreidels, and fruit and nuts, to giving a donation on someone’s behalf which is considered a “mitzvah” or good deed, to modern gifts and toys.

Hanukkah has become one of the most well-known Jewish holidays. Like most other festive holidays, it is made richer when people get together and enjoy the unique traditions of years past.

he wine culture in this country has been growing by leaps and bounds. It’s no longer something that we savor only on special occasions. We explore it, find it, consume it and we share it everyday. Among a wealth of choices, here are some that are definite stand outs. Bryant Family Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon-This cult cab is very small production, highly sought after and also lives up to the hype. It has consistently been reviewed with some of the highest scores vintage after vintage. It’s rare, expensive, will age for decades. A bottle of the 2011 vintage will set you back $689.99. Other Cabernets that warrant consideration are the Caymus Special Selection ($199.99) which has set a standard of consistency and quality for years and Silver Oak, a legendary winery that only makes cabernets…one from Napa Valley ($118.00) and a second from Alexander Valley ($74.99). Among French Champagnes the elite are referred to as Tête de Cuvée or Cuvée Prestige. These are made only in outstanding vintages and comprise a mere 1-2% of all the sparkling wine made in the world. The two most famous are Moët & Chandon’s Dom Pérignon ($179.99) and Louis Roederer's Cristal ($249.99) Other notable Cuvée Prestige are Veuve Clicqout’s La Grand Dame ($154.99), Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne ($194.99) and Perrier-Jouet’s Belle Epoque ($179.99). The second approach to gift giving for a hardcore wine lover is finding that cool, unusual alternative to the wines they already know and love. For the vino fans that like to explore the possibilities, here are some suggestions for gift giving or for you to try this holiday season. Tignanello ($118.99) is one of the original Super Tuscans, wines made in the Tuscany region of Italy that combine traditional Sangiovese grapes with non-traditional varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has had a worldwide following and reputation for quality since its creation in 1974.

Cheval de Andes ($69.99) is a collaboration between the renowned French Bordeaux maker Cheval Blanc and the Argentinean wine house of Terrazas de Los Andes: a blend of Malbec from Argentina and Cabernet from plantings in France that results in an old world Bordeaux style wine with new world value. Figgins Estate Red Wine ($95.99) is second label from the Figgins family that owns the esteemed Leonetti Cellars in Washington State. Figgins is a rich and balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot that bookends Leonetti’s excellent Cabernet Sauvignon. Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Cuvée Cuis 1er Cru ($59.99) is what is known as “Grower” Champagne. These very small production, handcrafted Champagnes are made exclusively by the families that grow the grapes and are often made from fruit of just a single vineyard. Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad ($24.99) is a Spanish Cava or sparkling wine made from only the first pressing of the grapes of each vintage and aged on the lees for 30 months in the bottle. It has superb depth and complexity as well as offering tremendous value. When the wine you choose is a gift there’s never an issue of what to do with it. Of course, the more wine you purchase for yourself, the more space you’ll need to store it. Though many of us buy our wine on Thursday and drink it by Sunday, wine cellars are still popular and a wise investment for anyone that wants to buy wine in volume and keep it properly for the long term. And who knows, if you do start your own wine collection, then maybe….just maybe, someone will give you that special bottle that makes your wine cellar complete.

he City of Tulsa’s flag recently made waves for being one of the worst designed flags in the United States. However, there’s hope thanks to a group of committed Tulsans, taking on the challenge to revamp the flag. Tulsa has an official flag. We’ll wait while you realize that you’ve never thought much about this aspect of this great city. It’s pretty straight forward: The flag is just the seal of Tulsa slapped on a white background. The seal is fine for viewing up close on paper, but not on a flag high in the sky. Roman Mars, a journalist and TED Conference presenter, spoke at a recent TED Conference, giving a presentation titled, “Why city flags may be the worst-designed thing you’ve never noticed.” Mars reasoned cities don’t think about the importance or relevance a flag brings to the city, instead often throwing the town logo or other garbled images onto a flag and calling it done. And, guess what city’s flag was included in the worst city flags in America? You got it – Tulsa. In Mars’ summation, Tulsa’s flag does not hit the five key points of flag design, according to the North American Vexillological Association, a group dedicated to the scientific and scholarly study of flags. In their opinion, great flags: 42

1. Keep it simple. 2. Use meaningful symbolism. 3. Use two-to-three basic colors. 4. Do not use any lettering or seals. 5. Are distinctive or related to. Depending on your definition of these rules, Tulsa’s flag breaks just about all of them. It uses several non-basic colors, a lot of lettering, and its logo is small and complex. If that wasn’t enough to get it mocked at a national conference, the image of the Tulsa flag is copyrighted, meaning reproduction is actually prohibited. It’s a case of what-not-to-do when it comes to flag design. This is why there is help on the way to make this flag one Tulsans can take pride in. A creative agency in Tulsa, Gitwit, has stepped up and is powering the movement to redesign the Tulsa flag to better represent Tulsa to the world. The new Tulsa Flag campaign includes a solid month of gathering input of what should be on the flag from all districts of the city. The team will read every answer, and distill the input to pass on to designers. By utilizing proper flag design principles, the designers aim to increase civic pride by having the flag become a branding piece for Tulsa. Artists will produce multiple flags, before the power is again turned to Tulsa citizens to choose the new Tulsa Flag design. “Our current flag is both ineffective as a flag because of its current design, and its reproduction and distribution limitations render it useless for anything outside of flying in front of the court house,” Jacob Johnson, Gitwit Principal and Strategist says. “It’s not even a question that a new flag needs to be proposed.” Johnson says the time to change the flag is now – not only because the current flag is lacking and has received negative national exposure, but also because the ground swell of growing pride and love for Tulsa demands it. “Tulsa pride has been growing steadily for the past decade,” Johnson said. “And it’s time we have a flag that we can display proudly however and wherever we want.” “Printed, embroidered, tattooed or painted, we need a flag that represents Tulsa and Tulsans across the globe,” Johnson said. “A great flag is about bringing people together and inviting others to come find out why Tulsans are so proud of their city.” When Gitwit has completed several designs for the new flag for Tulsa, members of the team will host a reveal to announce the possibilities to the Tulsa community. Oh, he's hilarious! He tells jokes a lot and makes the other reindeer laugh all the time. Most of all, he's the leader of the reindeer team and takes his job very seriously making sure we stick to our schedule on Christmas Eve.
