Abby Snethen | abigail.snethen@citylifestyle.com

As the warm weather begins to slowly cool, and the leaves start to fall, we are all left wondering how our style will change. From sandals and dresses to boots and sweaters, most fashion alters in unison with the weather. Colors, styles, and combinations can be seen across all beauty and style professions. Hair, makeup, clothing, shoe wear, jewelry and aesthetics all help us fully express ourselves, curating to our own personal style that makes us who we are. My style journey started in my mother’s bathroom. Sneaking into my mom’s makeup before school and experimenting on my own canvas was a highlight of my childhood. Growing up, my grandmother and I would create crafts of all kinds together, slowly moving into sewing and learning how to work a sewing machine. During the heat of COVID in 2020, I decided to thrift a machine of my own. My grandma helped me fix it and learn every piece. She would stand in long social distancing lines to buy fabric for me to work with and my mom turned our downstairs living room into my own personal studio. I started a small, social media based clothing business, where I learned to express myself through threads on a piece of fabric. Art and fashion are synonymous for me, working together to make me who I am today. Our September issue presents you with a plethora of style and expressive options. From the physical expression that lives right behind your closet door, Aaron Asunsolo offers you designer clothes that can compliment any feature for a variety of body types, to the art of hairstyling and owning the work of art that is on your head, Haircrush Salon helps you fall in love with something we are all born with and curates to your needs so you can wear it well. Although we are all beautiful in our own way, AE Aesthetics NW helps customers elevate and gain confidence in their everyday appearance, gracefully creating treatment plans that add on to personal style and beauty. We see self expression across a multitude of cultures, bringing light, love and confidence to the canvas and to the artist. Our September issue is at your disposal, not only as a voice for businesses but as a megaphone to amplify your persona. T HE A R T OF AGING W E L L NATURAL ENHANCEMENTS. TIMELESS CONFIDENCE.

ARTICLE BY ABBY SNETHEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN SIMCOE

There is a special kind of science that goes behind looking good and aging gracefully. Yes, diet, exercise, skin care and vitamins play an important role, but what about beyond that? Allison Ehrlich is the sole owner of AE Aesthetics NW, a business that started in 2022 and is located in downtown Sherwood. Ehrlich was a Physician Assistant for 14 years before moving into the aesthetic industry. Primary and urgent care set her up for success, falling in love with the procedural side of aesthetics and beauty.

S ELF CA R E | BEAUTY

After being in the industry for four years, Ehrlich learned that injections and other sides of aesthetics aren’t for everybody. She starts slow, with an hour consultation to learn about her patients’ goals. She creates a strong foundation, educating people on how to get their end goals and the steps that are required. “Comparison is the thief of joy,” said Ehrlich. Realistic and undetectable results is her end goal, focusing on natural procedures that enhance the beauty patients already possess. “I help people restore the volume that they’ve lost over time and help refresh their balance,” said Ehrlich. The first connection we have with people is through our eyes, smile and face, which is the focus of AE Aesthetics NW. “Aging well means looking your best at that stage.” The key to looking natural in your aesthetic journey is to start small. Ehrlich prefers to start conservatively, with a consultation as the first step, then slowly moving into botox. You can always add more when it comes to injections, but you can never take away when too much is applied. One treatment will not get you to your goal as aesthetics don’t happen over night. “It’s important to trust the process,” said Ehrlich. Ehrlich has created personal connections with the people she helps. The most important part of her business is creating relationships with her patients and building trust. “It’s not about me, it’s about them,” said Ehrlich. Reaching people

to help them feel more confident is a passion of hers, making her ambivert and medical side synonymous. All of the treatments that Ehrlich offers, she uses herself. Being open and honest about her own treatments creates another layer of trust between her and her patients. Ehrlich uses botox, filler, microneedling, and sculptra, a bio stimulator that triggers the body’s naturally produced collagen. Ehrlich’s social media account lists all of her pricing, results, and products that are offered. At the moment, AE Aesthetics NW offers wrinkle relaxers, dermal fillers, biostimulators, microneedling with Platelet Derived Growth Factors, GLP-1s, skin care and soon, hormonal replacement therapy. “Not everyone is ready for injectables,” said Ehrlich. “So we start with skin care, sleep, exercise and a consultation.” A new treatment that AE Aesthetics NW offers is a full facial balancing with filler in combination with biostimulators. “We’re investing in the long run,” said Ehrlich, and that starts with a simple conversation.

A COAT OF AMBITION

ARTICLE BY ABBY SNETHEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON ASUNSOLO

As summer shortly comes to a close and days get cooler, our summer clothes are hung up in the back of our closets to make room for warm furs, long sleeves and elegant coats. The colors of summer reflect in our clothing choices, slowly muting into warm fall hues and cool winter pallets. For some, dressing up and adding layers is a decision based on warmth, whilst others, like Aaron Asunsolo, choose a coat based on style, pattern, and stitching.

14

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | BEAU T Y

Asunsolo started her own clothing line in 2016. After gaining her bachelors in finance, she realized that fashion was her calling. “It identifies someone,” said Asunsolo. “It identifies me.” At 22 years old, she learned how to sew on her mother’s sewing machine, watching YouTube videos as she went. She started small, with a few clothing modifications here and there, to creating her own style and eventually making pieces that buyers could wear confidently with her business taking off in 2018. She quickly moved from patchwork coats to high end fashion, designing coats to her liking and taking custom orders for those who wanted a little more pizzazz. “I offer people pieces that are unique to them and bring excitement,” said Asunsolo. In the heat of her business, Asunsolo had employees that would help her sew, ship out orders, and maintain her standard of high end fashion. During her busy season, she gets around 40 orders a month, each coat taking about 10-15 hours to make and three weeks to get to the customer’s door. She uses scraps from her coats to make swimwear, remaining conscious about fabric waste. Her swimwear costs $144, signature coats, $335, and custom coats, $725. She ships in fabric that is needed for her designs and works tirelessly to ensure that customers fall in love with her work. She accommodates different body types, shapes, sizes and lengths. At 32, Asunsolo has graduated college, started her own business, has been featured in pieces by the Boston Globe and British Vogue, collaborated with Free People and created an AFC Championship coat for the wives of the Patriots. Success is a word that should be closely tied with Asunsolo. In the long run, she dreams of owning a warehouse to help her business grow. She would love to take on and employ a larger team, possibly gain a contract deal with a brand and build more awareness and recognition around her brand. Her dream started small, with her mother’s sewing machine, and has now manifested into a reality where Asunsolo loves what she does, and looks good while doing it. You can find her work and place an order on her website @aaronasunsolo or follow her on Instagram.

Most of us start out life like any other; with a head of hair. Each strand holds its own color, memory and weight, telling our story and helping us with the ultimate form of self expression. It can be cut, colored, have length added onto it, be styled for specific weather, hold accessories for certain occasions, turn grey with age, and change with you through every step of your life. Kirtsen Foust is the owner of Haircrush Salon, a homey establishment with a cabin-esque feel located in downtown Sherwood near the Chamber of Commerce. Her shop has been up and running since last March, employing four hair experts: one in curly hair, two in extensions and the last in lived-in color and wedding hair. Foust grew up watching her aunt do hair in Mississippi, helping around the shop when she could. The individuality of salons and hairstylists is what drew her in, captivated by the ability to make hair your own and have complete control over your own beauty. A few years ago, Foust underwent a surgery that resulted in significant hair loss. This situation sparked her passion for extensions and wanting to help people gain their confidence back. She helps clients in hair loss situations, such as cancer or hormonal circumstances, through extensions. “I help people create what they had before,” said Foust. Around 15 years ago, Foust’s best friend, Amber, worked as a hairstylist in the building that she now owns. “I remember walking in and telling her that I could see her owning this building one day,” said Foust. Her friend has since passed. Once the building became available, another one of her friends encouraged

Foust to make an offer and start her own business. She bought the building, moved in and started her business plan that night. “The building reminds me of Amber. I thought one day she would own it, not me, so it feels like we have come full circle.” Foust has been a stylist for around 15 years, evolving with her clients and spending time with them through every cycle of their life. She has seen regulars grow up, get married, have kids and pass away. She is the middle ground for her clients, bringing empathy and beauty to their lives, remaining non-judgmental and assisting in their individuality in a chair that outsiders would find simple. Her establishment is considered a Green Circle Salon, recycling their color tubes, foils, hair and other products that would otherwise end in a landfill. Her salon mainly uses R & Co. products, which are gluten free, vegan, use cautious recycling and doesn’t test on animals. It is their most natural product line, which is sold in their salon for customers to use at home. In the future, Foust wants to add on to her team, bringing on more extension artists and potentially a female barber. As a “chemistry nerd”, Foust would love to create her own product to bring her passion and skill together. Growing up as an educator, Foust wants to be more involved in the educational side of hair styling, taking on apprentices and helping starter stylists find their calling. Although her shop is fairly new, Foust has big plans for her future in styling. Hair is an art that can be hard to master, but once you gain the knowledge and experience that Foust has, you can change not only hair, but lives.

“Hair is your crown. It is the first thing that people notice.”

HOW TO

DART YOUR WAISTBAND ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY SNETHEN

WHY GO TO A TAILOR WHEN YOU CAN ALTER YOUR OWN CLOTHES RIGHT AT HOME?

W H AT YO U N E E D : • Needle • Thread • Measuring tape

• Scissors • Pen or pencil • Pair of pants

ONE Measure how much want to take in on your waist. Use a tape measure for accuracy.

TWO Lay your pants out so the back is facing you and the front of the pants are laying down.

THREE Take a writing tool (pen, pencil, white crayon) and mark identical diagonal marks on each side of your middle belt loop. This will be your guide. Measurements will vary based on how much you want to take in.

3

4

FOUR Take your needle and thread your thread through. The thicker the thread the better. Make a knot in the end but do not tie a knot to your needle. Allow a tail to hang.

FIVE Insert your needle at the top of your jeans, starting from the inside of your pants. Make sure you are following the lines you drew earlier. You will do one side at a time.

SIX 5

6

You will now alternate sides, following your line and the center stitch of your pants. To create the seamless dart stitch, you will push your needle from the front to the back and immediately to the front again. Alternate from your drawn line to the center stitch to create horizontal lines down to your diagonal point.

SEVEN Once at the point, gently pull your thread until you can no longer see it and your line is now directly next to your center stitch. Push your needle through to the inside and tie off your thread.

LONG THE

GAME

FASHION FADES. STYLE COMPOUNDS. ARTICLE BY NATHAN OEMING Anyone who has cleaned out a closet knows the difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what the moment told you to buy. Style is what you'd buy again ten years later. One chases. The other endures. The financial industry sells fashion. The hot stock, the asset class of the season, the strategy everyone is suddenly wearing. It photographs well and it doesn't last. That's intensity. Style is intentionality: own a diversified basket of the best companies in the world, hold it through everything, and let time do the tailoring. Here's what's true about people with real style: they're not the ones buying the most. They're the ones who decided, long ago, what fits — and stopped auditioning alternatives. Their look is boring in the best sense. It works at every occasion, in every decade. The tortoise, it turns out, is well dressed. He wins the race every time precisely because he never changes outfits mid-course. Wealth works the same way. Wealth without wisdom causes problems, and wisdom, like style, can't be bought off the rack. It gets formed — modeled by parents, practiced in small decisions, handed down the way a grandfather's watch is handed down: with a story attached, and an expectation that you'll care for it and pass it forward. That's the chain of stewards. Each generation inherits not just the asset but the sensibility that keeps the asset alive. So audit your financial closet this month. What did you buy because the moment was loud? What have you kept because it fits who you are and where your family is going? Keep the second category. Give the first away. Fashion asks what's new. Style asks what lasts. In wardrobes and in wealth, only the second question compounds.

24

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FI NANCE + LE GAL SE RVICE S

A NOTE FROM NATHAN I'll admit it: my clothing style has changed plenty over the years. Ask my family — they have photos. My investment philosophy hasn't changed at all. Own the best companies in the world, hold them, let time work. Wardrobes should evolve. Convictions shouldn't. Knowing the difference is the whole trick.

Your Autumn Smile Checklist 7 DENTAL NEEDS FOR FALL

Have I used my insurance benefits before they reset? Most plans run on a calendar year — unused benefits don't roll over, so now's the time to use them before December 31st. Am I noticing new sensitivity to hot drinks? As pumpkin spice lattes and hot cocoa season kicks in, sensitivity can be an early sign of enamel wear or a cavity starting to form. Have I noticed teeth grinding or jaw tension lately? Back-to-school stress and busier schedules can increase clenching and grinding, often without you realizing it. Ask your dentist about a nightguard. Am I ready for holiday photos and gatherings? If you've been thinking about whitening, veneers, or a more confident smile, now is the time to start the conversation. Do I have a sweet tooth? After eating Halloween candy, rinse with water but wait 30 minutes before brushing. The wait time protects your enamel. Did my teen's wisdom teeth evaluation slip through the cracks over the summer break? If you forgot, get on our schedule for fall break so your teen doesn’t miss school. The Finishing Touch ST YLING TIPS FROM THE E XPERTS BEHIND ONE OF PORTL AND' S MOST INNOVATIVE JE WELERS ARTICLE BY CITY LIFESTYLE AND JUSTINE ELLIOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIADONNA

MiaDonna, one of the world's first lab-grown diamond jewelry retailers, was founded in Portland in 2005 to reimagine fine jewelry through innovation, integrity, and impact. At its Bridgeport Village flagship boutique, non-commissioned jewelry experts make shopping easy with 60-day returns, 90-day ring resizing, and complimentary engraving. To offset its carbon footprint, MiaDonna also plants a tree for every order, with thousands planted across Oregon. With celebrity fans like Stella McCartney, who wore MiaDonna to this year's Met Gala, and two decades of innovation, the team knows a thing or two about elevating personal style. We asked Sales Director Justine Elliott to share her favorite jewelry styling tips.

How do you choose jewelry for different necklines? Match your jewelry to your neckline. A pendant complements a V-neck, a choker pairs beautifully with strapless styles, long or layered chains work well with high necklines, and shorter necklaces suit rounded necklines.

What's the best way to combine necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings? Choose one statement piece, then build around it with simpler accents. Layer necklaces in varying lengths and textures, and mix sparkling and plain metal stacking rings to create depth and interest.

Timeless Staples Our favorite tried-and-true staple pieces that deserve a spot in everyone’s diamond wardrobe: 1. Marie Solitaire Engagement Ring 2. Martini Stud Earrings 3. Petite Classic Tennis Bracelet 4. Round Solitaire Pendant 5. Morgan Eternity Band

What's the easiest way to elevate a simple outfit? Add one standout piece—whether it's a bold necklace or a striking pair of hoops. A single focal point can instantly transform an understated look.

Can you mix yellow and white gold? Absolutely. Mixing metals is both stylish and on trend. Elliott recommends choosing one metal as the primary tone, then incorporating the other as an accent for a balanced, modern look.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• • • • • •

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

THE NEW RULES

Modern Home Style

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK HOME OF RYAN AND HILLARY BADER

For years, the rule was simple. Pick a palette, pick an aesthetic, and let it carry through every room. The all-white kitchen led to the all-white living room led to the all-white everything. That era is over. The most interesting homes right now are doing something braver. They’re letting each room hold its own mood. What ties them together isn’t a single look. It’s the materials they keep coming back to: warm brass, sculptural lighting, marble, stained wood, and quiet neutrals holding it all together. We toured one home that gets it exactly right, and pulled out ideas worth borrowing.

1. RESORT ENERGY Outdoor rooms designed with the rigor of interiors. This isn’t a backyard. It’s a destination. From the lined-up lounge chairs to the scalloped umbrellas to the green-striped pillows repeating across the deck. The lesson here is to stop treating outdoor furniture as an afterthought. Pick a palette and commit.

3. MOODY MODERN Dark dining rooms are back, and better than ever. Bold taupe walls, an oval black table, sleek chairs, and an oversized round mirror standing in for art. The bright, airy dining room had its decade. Now bring on the supper club.

2. SCULPTUR AL CALM One bold gesture in a quiet room. Everything in this great room is whispering, from the cream walls to the linen sectional to the chandelier’s delicate brass rings. And then a tree, reaching toward the coffered ceiling like it grew there on purpose. When the rest of the room is quiet, the boldest thing you can put in it is something alive.

4. WAR M MODER N The all-white kitchen meets warm wood. Cream cabinetry stays, because the light it gives you is hard to beat. But the island gets a stained wood treatment that grounds the whole space. Brass pendants and hardware add glow. Velvet stools soften the lines. This is the kitchen the next decade is building toward.

6. BUILT FOR PLAY Rooms that don’t apologize for being fun. A game table under a crystal chandelier. A leather club chair next to a telescope. A theater tucked in around the corner. The best entertaining spaces are the ones built for actual use, not just for looking at.

5. THE JEWEL BOX Small spaces, big swing. Antiqued mercury glass, a brass faucet, fluted glass cabinets, golden pulls on crisp white shakers. The idea is to treat your tucked-away corners (bars, powder rooms, butler’s pantries) as the place to take your most theatrical swing. The smaller the room, the bolder you can be.

7. COLOR COCOON Saturated color in rooms meant for rest. Deep sage-spruce walls, ivory bedding, an antiqued mirror catching the shutter light. Proof that calm doesn’t have to mean beige. Color, used right, is the most restful thing you can put in a room. Find your shade and let it hold you.

Different rooms, different moods, one home. The new rule, it turns out, is that there doesn’t have to be one.
