KIDS & PETS

![]()

To say I am excited about this issue would be an understatement. Both kids – and pets – have been at the center of my universe for many years. Raising two daughters has been the joy of my life. They’re now 15 and 18 years old, and my husband and I find ourselves lately reminiscing about the early days. Their joy, curiosity and spirit have been evident from the beginning, and it has been so beautiful to witness their journey. Children have so much to teach us, don’t they? Among my favorites is their wonder with the things us adults consider ordinary. I recall summer walks with my girls where a caterpillar prompted a 5-minute observation, every dog we crossed paths with came with squeals of excitement, and a rainbow sighting was the highlight of the day.
One childhood wonder that I’m happy to report my girls have not outgrown is their love of pets. Although we did not have one at the time, my eldest’s first word was “dog”. She has been obsessed ever since. Recalling many memories with my own childhood dog, a golden retriever named Katie, we finally made our daughters’ dreams come true with their own. Several years later, we declared we needed a second. And then we really went off the deep end and got a third. Yes, we’re officially crazy. But they bring us all so much joy it’s hard to imagine a life without any of them.
In this issue, we’ll show you the amazing rescue work being done at Cat Adoption Team, an inside look at a company helping your family create outdoor memories year-round, and an inspiring man whose love of music encourages peace within his students of all ages. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we loved creating it.
Here’s to the children and pets in our lives who make us laugh, bring us joy and encourage us to notice the ordinary.
Oh, and please do tell your dog that I said hi.

Felines offer companionship to anyone who is looking and that search starts with adoption
ARTICLE BY ABBY SNETHEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVEN PAUL
Most species of animal make for great pets but cats offer something deeper. From late night cuddles, early morning zoomies, to gossiping with a being that will never disagree with you and creating an unbreakable bond, cats will be your go-to. But every search for companionship must start somewhere.
Cat Adoption Team is a non-profit organization located in Sherwood, off of the Southwest Pacific Highway. Founded in 1998, CAT has grown exponentially, now providing eager cat owners with all of the resources they may need. Over 500 volunteers and around 40 staff help CAT run smoothly, from foster home volunteers to people who have been trained to bottle feed kittens.
All felines that come into CAT go through an extensive process to ensure their wellbeing. First exams, spay and neutering, vaccines, microchipping, flea treatment and deworming, FeLV testing, a kitten care handbook, a certificate for post-adoption exam and presentations to inform adopters about feline care are included in adoptions fees. Kittens are $225, cats from 1-7 range from $110 to $225 and senior cats, eight years or older, are free. Senior cats get the same procedures done as kittens and young adults, with their new owner receiving $1,000 a year for any vet bills that might come their way, thanks to their Aleece Runge Fund for Senior Cats. Senior cats are less likely to get adopted due to fear of vet bills, limited time and potential extra care, but CAT ensures that these older cats and owners are taken care of to provide the best possible life for both.

CAT has a special program for owners who may be struggling financially. Their “Keeping Cats in Home” program is for people who need help to take care of their feline due to evictions, vet bills, rising food cost and more. Owners can request funds from this program to help them keep their cats in their home instead of surrendering. “There is no shame in difficult situations and circumstances,” said Shanda Chroust-Masin, the Director of Development and Communications at CAT.

Aside from their in-house adoption and vet clinic, CAT partners with businesses all over town. Pet Co., Mud Bay, the Tigard Pride Parade, the Portland Pickles and the Portland Timbers are just a few places that CAT partners with. CAT is partnered with Purina, a wellknown animal food brand, providing the shelter with food year round to feed the cats in the shelter as well as a free bag of food once a cat has been adopted. CAT is paired with the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and has partnerships with local vet clinics with a free first vet exam to establish care for your animal. Their list of vet clinics can be found on their website.
Shanda has been with CAT for a few years now, with her love of animals ever growing. She comes from a child development and education background, working with the Boys & Girls Club for about 10 years and other nonprofits. She fell in love with the administrative piece of nonprofit work, managing programs and writing grants to extend and advocate for funding. As a lifelong pet owner, this job was a no brainer. She adopted her first feline from CAT in December, Lorelei, for her son, Archer.
Shanda’s son is on the spectrum with a sensory processing disorder. One of their dogs of 15 years had recently passed away, leaving a hole in Archer’s life as his therapy dog was no longer around. Lorelei now serves as his therapy cat and best friend. “One of the reasons why I felt compelled to come here was seeing how significant animals can be in our lives,” said Shanda. “They have more purpose than I would have ever imagined. I’ve watched my son meet his sensory needs through those interactions with these animals.”
CAT offers a same-day adoption process, allowing a 24-hour adoption hold on all felines. They provide adoption counselors to discuss the process of adoption, what it means to own a cat, and what will follow after adoption is completed. As a non-profit organization, CAT gains their funding through adoption revenue and donations. They have about 40 staff members, with multiple veterinarians and vet techs, but their operations function heavily on volunteer staff. All volunteers are trained to take care of cats in every stage of life, and help eager homes smoothly adopt. CAT’s goal is to expand their already large building to accommodate for cat capacity.
“Our mission is to help all cats and kittens in our community,” said Shanda. CAT respects and helps animals find loving homes, and supports adopters through the entire process, even after the adoption is finished.

A look inside the family owned business, Willamette Valley Patio Covers
Chris and Vashti Young reside in Oregon but their story didn’t start there. Chris grew up in Southern California, spending most of his time biking, hiking and surfing. Vashti grew up in Alaska, spending most of her time outdoors doing activities such as cross-country skiing and hiking. She decided to move to Southern California for college, where she met Chris in 1989 after applying to work at an Adjudicated Youth program, where Chris also worked whilst attending school to become an EMT. They soon got married and moved back to Alaska after residing in Salem during their early 20s to raise their children. Although their occupations at the time differed, one commonality remained consistent– their love for being outside and being one with nature.
Willamette Patio Covers is owned, operated and contracted by Chris, with Vashti being the operations manager. Chris’s background in construction and contracting work easily set him up for success to own a business. He has been in the industry for roughly 30 years and decided six years ago that owning a business was the one thing he wanted to do.
Chris and Vashti sell and install high end patio covers shipped from Germany and manufactured in Seattle. Their covers have powder coated aluminum frames, acrylic opaque glass, are waterproof, rust free and are durable for all kinds of weather. These covers come at a one time cost with a lifetime warranty. “One of our biggest passions is creating a space where people can connect,” said Vashti. Growing up in the outdoors greatly influenced Chris and Vashti to take on this lifetime project.

Although their business is growing, they still have a “mom and pop” vibe to their company. It can be rare to find businesses that stay with you even after the job is done. “
“My goal is to create something amazing for people that will be life changing,” said Chris. Willamette Patio Covers is one of the top two sellers of their product in the Pacific Northwest. With their covers, they can turn a deck that heats up to 100 degrees to a cool sanctuary that will be enjoyable through every season and climate.
Besides creating enjoyable spaces for homeowners, the Youngs also open their home to whomever may need a place to stay. In their early 20’s, Chris and Vashti became host parents to a 13 year-old-girl who was in need of help. She was the first of many. “When we talk about community we don’t mean an acute euphemism," said Vashti. Although it did come with trial and error, Chris and Vashti helped raise their host daughter and has been a part of the family for 33 years, with her now showing up for family events, coming over for dinner and eventually calling Chris and Vashti “mom and dad.” Being host parents set them up for success with parenting in the long run, learning from the program they were with through guidance and training.
Every now and then they will host families that need a place to stay, opening
their home to strangers and lending a helping hand whenever they can. One of Vashti’s long term goals for Willamette Patio Covers is to sponsor a youth sports team, continuing her community involvement not just in her personal life but in her work life.
Although their business is growing, they still have a “mom and pop” vibe to their company. It can be rare to find businesses that stay with you even after the job is done. Chris and Vashti remain close to some of their customers, having invitations extended to them for dinner or casual outings. Their business has a solid five star reputation, making it to the top three spots in 2025 for the Best of Willamette Valley award.
Chris’s goal for the future is to expand their business to Idaho and become a licensed contractor in Washington. “My main goal is not expansion and growth, it’s to be the best at what we do,” said Chris.
They pride themselves in prioritizing organization, safety, efficiency, and loyalty to customers. No business can guarantee absolute perfection, but Willamette Valley Patio Covers can guarantee excellence.

Transforming music into inspiring melodies, rhythms, and identities

Hossein Salehi was first introduced to music at the age of seven during his 1st grade graduation. Salehi saw a group of musicians playing instruments and was asked by his father what he would like as a prize for finishing the 1st grade. He asked his father what they were playing and that he wanted one as his prize. He began to play the santoor, a Persian stringed hammered dulcimer instrument, 70 years ago and hasn’t stopped playing since. In 1979, Salehi, who was a flight instructor at the time, was sent to the United States on a scholarship to attend an advanced aviation course in Alabama. Shortly after leaving Iran, a revolution took place, overthrowing their ruler at the time, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. When given the opportunity to stay in the US to be an instructor pilot, Salehi and his wife decided to return to Iran in hopes to teach his learnings to students. In 1987, Salehi and his wife made the permanent move to the US, taking the offer to be an instructor. They now reside in Oregon. Salehi founded ArtMax Academy in 2009 with eight other professional board members, mostly musicians, in hopes to spark love, passion and education to anyone and everyone who is willing to learn and master cross-cultural musical instruments.

“The
When did you start teaching?
I started teaching in High School to classmates, siblings and later to my children and to my wife. Overall, I have taught roughly over 1,100 people. It all started with the santoor, tombak (goblet drum, and daf (skin frame). The santoor has always been a close friend, helping me in my own life through ups and downs. In any case, the santoor has been a very good friend, assisting me and reflecting on my own melody. Whatever I have learned in the past 40, 50, 60 and 70 years, I teach and pass to the next generation.
What do you do at ArtMax Academy? What is ArtMax?
I am the founder and executive director of ArtMax. I shared my vision with a group of music lovers, who are mostly my former students. Each one of them shares the love of music that I have. Everyone is volunteering at ArtMax to carry the torch and pass it on to the next generation. ArtMax focuses on music, language, and performing arts. My wife has extensive experience in teaching Farsi and she currently has students
aging from 6 years to 80+ years old. I have the same range of students– from 5 years to 90. There is no age limit, there is no barrier. Everyone is welcome who wants to express themselves and learn something from us. We have a number of “exotic” instruments at ArtMax, such as the santoor, oud and kamancheh. If you call in and ask for a harpist, we can reach out to a qualified harp teacher and pair off students with teachers. Everything is available. From guitar, piano, saxophone, flute, tombak, daf, and santoor, we have them. If it is anything other than what we have, I will reach out and find an instructor.
How do you shape the kids of today?
The first thing you will learn from learning music is discipline. You have to gather your thoughts from everywhere and gain your focus. You have to be concentrated and pay attention to details and remain dedicated to this art form. After that, what you will learn as a student, whether it’s one month taking a lesson or five years, is you will build up a confidence of your identity and who you are. All of the students who come

to my class first learn to believe in themselves. Once they believe in themselves, they can do whatever any other musician can do and more. It builds, creates and develops the creativity of that person. The more they know, the more they have the ability to create their own melodic sentences. We will refine that sentence together.
How do you see art and music shaping your future?
Music has been shaping me. It is my first nature. Whatever I do, it has a rhythm. I see all sounds and all actions in the form of melodic music. That is how I express my feelings with the music. I am trying to train capable students to keep the school, ArtMax up and running for the future generation. My wife and I are trying to keep the culture alive and share it with others. We both are certified and recipients of Culture Keepers by OFN (Oregon Folklife Network).
How will music change the world?
Music will shape and bring hearts together. Hopefully that will take us one step closer to peace. I see music taking people closer to peace. It is never too late to learn an instrument. I am retired from the 9-5 office job but I still play. ArtMax had an open house on June 14th, where I played with my students. In two weeks on June 28th, we played at the World Beat Festival in Salem, representing the country of Iran.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK
JANIE
“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

The family dog is the first estate plan
ARTICLE BY NATHAN OEMING
When people ask me about legacy, they almost always mean money — how much to leave, what the documents should say. Those are real — but they’re the second question. The first is: who are you leaving it to? Not which names. What kind of people.
Here’s what I believe down to the ground. Wealth without wisdom causes problems. Money handed to someone who never learned to steward it doesn’t bless them — it exposes them. So the real work of legacy isn’t drafting documents. It’s raising stewards.
And stewardship is something a kid can start practicing at six, with a creature that costs eleven dollars. A pet is a child’s first job that actually matters. Something is alive and depends on them. The water bowl gets filled on a Tuesday when nothing is fun and nobody is watching.
None of that is exciting. That’s exactly the point. Good planning is supposed to feel boring, and the boredom is the medicine working. The unglamorous repetition is building a muscle — the same one that lets a grown adult own great companies through a 30% drop without flinching. The tortoise wins the race, and a kid who learns that from a dog has a head start.
And when a pet dies — as most do before the childhood ends — a child learns the truest thing: what we love is entrusted to us for a while, not forever. That’s not a bad definition of legacy.
A family that stays well off for a hundred years isn’t built on a clever trust. It’s a chain of people who each learned to steward what they were given and taught the next one to do the same. You can’t draft that into a will. It gets built one boring Tuesday at a time.
Look under the kitchen table.

“My first dog was Broker, a white Lab I got at eight. Feeding him every morning — whether I felt like it or not — was the first responsibility that was mine alone. I didn't have a word for it then. Now I call it stewardship, and it's still the whole job.”
