Ever asked yourself, "What difference have I made in my home as a dad?”
Do fathers really matter?
Of course, the simple answer is – Yes! Dedicated, loving, sacrificing fathers – or father figures – make countless differences in their home and family.
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words and positive actions can have a long-lasting impact on his children.
How much impact you make as a dad is entirely up to you.
As we reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smiles can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s physicality can be challenging
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Even if you aren't a father or husband, you can make a powerful difference in the lives of those around you. With your co-workers. In your family. Or volunteering at fantastic Troy-area nonprofits like Boys & Girls Club of Troy, Friends of Foster Kids or Kiwanis Club of Troy.
This month, let your father – or father figure – know how much he matters to you. And for all the Gentlemen in our community, let us be the first to say, "Thank you." You are invaluable to your children, your family and the community.
Happy Father’s Day!

3 TROY GENTLEMEN SHARE HOW THEY GIVE BACK, HOW THEY’RE INSPIRED – AND WHAT’S AHEAD ON THEIR JOURNEY IN LIFE
ARTICLE BY ANTOINE SALEH, PATHIK MODY AND CLINT RICHARDSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMRAN BAJWA (PHOTOSBYSIMBA.COM)
Life is about family, and my family is the best thing I’ve ever had. I love taking care of them.
One lesson I’ve learned is to have a healthy worklife balance. For the last few years, I’ve been spending more time with family rather than just work, work, work. And I’m loving it. I’m balancing work and home much better. I’m making up for it, especially with my granddaughter.
I’ve learned how to make someone happy with their hair. That’s really my greatest satisfaction. When women and men come to a salon, they want to feel fantastic. It’s not just about the hair, it’s the whole experience. They want to feel listened to and they want to look great. That’s what they’re here for.
And that’s something I think everyone can strive for: Do your best to make others look good.
CONTINUED >
One of the most vital lessons I’ve learned, and one which I deeply believe in sharing with coworkers and children, is the significance of integrity, empathy and doing the right thing.
Integrity is the cornerstone of trust, both in professional relationships and personal interactions. It entails consistently aligning actions with ethical principles, even when it is challenging or inconvenient.
Empathy, on the other hand, is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, fostering connection and mutual understanding. Together, integrity and empathy form a powerful combination that guides us to do what is morally right, even in difficult circumstances.
Discussing these values with coworkers encourages a culture of honesty, respect and collaboration within the workplace, leading to enhanced teamwork and productivity. Similarly, imparting these lessons to children nurtures their moral compass, preparing them to navigate life’s challenges with integrity and compassion, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and ethical society.
Your thoughts are a powerful tool. A positive mindset will lead to a positive atmosphere. Call it Karma or whatever you want, but if you surround yourself with positive-thinking people, you’ll accomplish positive things.
Time is your most valuable asset. Money, power and influence will ebb and flow throughout your life. Time is a constant, so make your time matter. Appreciate those who spend their time with you. Be in the moment and appreciate every minute you get to spend doing what you do – work, family, relationships. You only have so many seconds in life, so give them meaning.
Remember, you control only one thing in life – your reactions to the things around you. You should spend the rest of your life trying to master this. It’s hard! We’re human, we have emotions and emotions are beautiful things. Happiness, sadness, envy, jealousy, anger, rage, and frustration are gifts that make us who we are, but to really be in control of one’s life starts with controlling these emotions and how we react to situations that go on around us.
When it comes to IT security, Joel and his team at JDCTek are “The Guys”
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CINDY STEWARTAs parents, we learn one especially effective way to discipline our children: Take away what means the most to them. For a young Joel Chinsky, that thing was computers.
“I was learning technology at age eleven. My dad had a home office with a computer and when he wasn’t working, I was playing with it.”
“One of my hard drives failed and Joel saved me from losing all of my 4TB of photos.”
By 16, he was up all night programming and gaming. “Of course, my Dad knew how to ground me. He would lock the keyboard.”
A determined Joel simply traced the lock back to the circuit board and unplugged it. For months, his dad would lock it, not realizing the key was disconnected. Joel would play on it all night while his parents slept.
“We laughed about it later, but this started me on my journey with technology.”
Joel built and sold computers to neighbors before working on help desks for Ford, Domino’s, Pfizer and Johnson Controls. Gradually, he began developing his own business: JDCTek ( JDCTek.com).
For five years after launching, it was just Joel. Then he landed a client with more than 100 employees. That’s when business exploded. Seventeen years later, his team serves many large business clients from a bigger facility. Last year alone, he doubled the size of his team.
And yet, while other IT companies measure response time in days, his team promises to respond within five minutes. Their average response time is 3.5 minutes.
“Most repairs can be done remotely using secure management tools, so you don't have to wait around for a technician to show up,” he says.
It’s been an amazing journey, he adds, with growth powered by referrals from clients. Many can be found on Google, where he has a perfect 5.0 rating from 45 reviews.
“Outstanding,” reads one. “JDCTek has been my trusted IT partner for more than a decade. Everything about this company is excellent – staff, knowledge, service, responsiveness, products, pricing, availability.”
“I have worked directly with Joel and his team at JDCTek for over the past 10 years. I would give him 10 STARS if I could,” says another reviewer, a hobbyist photographer. “One of my hard drives failed and Joel saved me from losing all of my 4TB of photos.”
A third says her home Wi-Fi was hacked. “We immediately received assistance remotely. Scans were done, malware removed, security issues fixed, and we signed up for a monthly program. One call to JDC fixed everything.”
One reason for the fast response and quick recoveries: JDCTek’s focus on security.
“I’ve invested thousands of hours in the field of security, with conferences and certifications. I take part in IT and security peer groups, talking to other IT and security companies, teaching them, learning from them and helping one another.”
This ensures JDCTek is prepared for any crisis a business or home may encounter. In fact, Joel thinks of JDCTek as a security company – not just an IT company.
“Keeping clients in business is a challenge. We’re always monitoring. We have 47 different platforms that make up our business. That’s a lot of information we must constantly watch, monitor, remediate if something happens.”
Despite long hours, Joel balances time with his wife Sienn and daughter Victoria, 7. “We love family road trips and going up north in the summertime. This summer, we’re traveling to New York, Quebec, Montreal and Ontario. With the right technology in place, I can enjoy my family time while working securely from anywhere.”
If you aren’t sure you have the right technology for your security and functionality, email JDCTek at Joel@jdctek.com or call (248) 494-7253.
See how fast they respond.

Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3.
But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors.
Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best.
He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer.
In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.
With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.
“I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says.
“The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.”
Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed.
“You only get one body,” he says.
Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life.
He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life.
“I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says.
Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip?
Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.
KETTLEBELLS
Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.
BARS AND WEIGHTS
A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells.
DUMBBELLS
Short barbells, usually held in each hand
MEDICINE BALLS
Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH:
Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.
KETTLEBELL HALO:
Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.
CLEAN TO LUNGE:
First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.

MATT RAPPAPORT, COLLISION SIX ENTERTAIN 275,000 FANS AS THE NFL DRAFT IN DETROIT BREAKS ALL RECORDS
“YOU COULD TELL THERE’S A SEA OF PEOPLE OUT THERE, BUT YOU COULDN’T SEE THE END OF THE CROWD, SO IT FELT LIKE ‘WOW’ BUT IT WASN’T AS INTIMIDATING AS I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE. WE WERE JUST SO PUMPED TO DO OUR THING AND ENTERTAIN SO MANY PEOPLE.”
You’ve had the daydream: being a crack musician, rocking out for hundreds of thousands of people. Ever wondered how it would feel?
Ask Matt Rappaport of Beverly Hills.
Matt leads Collision Six, the band selected to play at this year’s NFL Draft, held in downtown Detroit. Collision Six performed for an astonishing 275,000 rollicking metro Detroiters.
“The energy was electric,” Matt says. Collision Six started in 2002. The band focuses solely on covers.
“We love to play songs everyone knows and loves, that really get people going,” Matt says. Collision Six’s repertoire spans
the ‘60s to the present-day. Over the years, they’ve played Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena, The Fillmore and more, along with venues like the Detroit Athletic Club and Bay Harbor Yacht Club.
The event company responsible for the NFL Draft caught the band’s act. They called Matt and asked if the band would be interested in the gig.
“Play in front of 300,000 people? Yes, please!” says Matt.
First, Collision Six had to run the gauntlet of an approval process that included the NFL and Detroit’s mayor.
“We had to practice starting and stopping on a dime so we could follow the tight
production schedule as each pick was announced,” Matt recalls.
So what was it like jamming in front of almost 300,000 people?
“You know, I didn’t really feel nervous,” Matt recalls.
“The way it was set up, it felt like you were playing in a small theater with just a few hundred people, and that’s something we’re very comfortable with. Beyond that, you could tell there’s a sea of people out there, but you couldn’t see the end of the crowd, so it felt like ‘wow’ but it wasn’t as intimidating as I thought it might be. We were just so pumped to do our thing and entertain so many people.”
The moment that stands out most for Matt happened during the band’s performance of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.”
“We love that beginning part when everyone yells ‘South Detroit,’ but hearing 300,000 people do it all together was next-level,” Matt reflects.
Collision Six specializes in weddings and private parties.
“Being the entertainment for someone’s most important day fuels us to create the party environment every weekend,” Matt says.
Collision Six regulars Matt, his wife Sarah, Kerry Srot, Nick Wilczynski, Evan Sherman, Michael Taylor, Brandon Bland and Amir Edwards, along with singers JaNae Fox and Corey Taylor, now can say they played in front of the largest crowd in the history of the NFL Draft.
Now that’s rocking out.
