Wellness, Sleep & Fun: Explore More of Troy

Summer has a way of inviting us to look up from our routines and rediscover the community we call home.

In Troy, there always seems to be something new to explore, whether it’s a hidden gem restaurant, a neighborhood event, a walk through the park or a brand-new destination bringing people together.

In this issue, we highlight a summer of fun with a preview of exciting places to explore across the city. This includes the exciting opening of Troy’s new cricket field – Michigan’s first full-size field featuring a scoreboard, covered dugouts and permanent sight screens.

Of course, exploration can mean investing in yourself. We spend time with Detroit Strong Personal Training owner Eshaan Mangal, helping you focus on creating a healthier, stronger life from the inside out.

And speaking of health, I’ve been reminded lately how much we underestimate the value of rest. In this issue, the team at Snooze Mattress Company shares why quality sleep may be one of the most important foundations for overall wellness.

Finally, our feature on Ferrari explores not just luxury automobiles, but the passion, heritage and pursuit of excellence that define the Ferrari experience.

Maybe that’s what exploration really is – paying attention to the things that help us live more fully.

I hope this issue inspires you to get out, try something new – and enjoy everything summer has to offer in Troy.

THE ART OF FERRARI

EXPLORING THE PASSION BEHIND MICHIGAN’S FERRARI LEGACY

There’s a moment at Troy Traffic Jam when people come across the Ferraris on display and instinctively shift closer.

Maybe it’s the unmistakable growl of a Ferrari engine echoing through the Columbia Center. Or the flash of Rosso Corsa red under the summer sun. Or maybe it’s the realization that for many people, this is the car they dreamed about long before they could ever afford one..

For Jeff Cauley, that feeling never gets old.

Photo: John Heck

“When you race yourself and you love sports cars, it just doesn’t get any better than Ferrari,” he says. “I’ve always considered myself very, very blessed.”

That passion is everywhere inside Cauley Ferrari of Detroit, the local dealership Jeff and his family crafted into one of the most respected Ferrari destinations in the country. Unlike many luxury brands built around exclusivity, the Cauley approach has always felt unusually personal. Rooted more in emotion than status.

Decades after entering the automotive world, Jeff still races competitively, climbing behind the wheel at tracks across the Midwest. Earlier this spring, he entered – and won – three races at Waterford Hills Road Racing.

“It’s the greatest feeling in the world,” he says of racing. “It’s about precision and adrenaline. You have total control and total responsibility.”

That connection to racing culture has helped shape the dealership’s identity from the beginning. Ferrari, after all, was born on the racetrack long before it became a luxury icon.

Even so, Jeff says, Ferrari is not about showing off.

“Our customers aren’t buying a Ferrari to impress people,” he explains. “They’re truly buying a Ferrari because they respect the beauty and technical engineering of the car.”

Even exhibiting every year at Troy Traffic Jam – the city’s biggest auto show –is more about the fun than pride. That seems to be the draw, even here in Troy.

Many of Jeff’s clients are entrepreneurs and self-made business owners; others simply hard-working people who spent years pursuing success while dreaming of one day rewarding themselves with the car they always wanted.

One customer carried a photo of a Ferrari in his wallet for 20 years while growing a franchise business. The day he finally bought his first Ferrari from Jeff, he pulled out the worn picture he had kept as motivation all those years.

“That was special,” Jeff says.

That sense of aspiration – of exploring what’s possible – is woven deeply into the Cauley story itself.

Long before Ferrari red became part of the family identity, the Cauley name was already synonymous with performance cars in Metro Detroit. Jeff grew up around dealerships founded by his father, Jack Cauley, eventually building a reputation in the Corvette world before Ferrari North America came calling in 1998.

What followed became part of dealership lore.

“It was probably the absolute fastest in recorded history from initial contact to signing the letter of intent,” Jeff says of securing the Ferrari franchise.

But what mattered most wasn’t speed. It was vision.

At the time, Oakland County was still evolving into the luxury community it is today. Jeff saw the opportunity to build something different here.

The 2018 expansion transformed the dealership further as Jeff created Casa Ferrari – an upscale

second-floor lounge with an outdoor deck and a museum celebrating Ferrari history and racing culture.

Visitors are welcome to explore the museum, tour the dealership and experience the Ferrari world firsthand, whether lifelong collectors or simply parents bringing in a child who loves exotic cars.

“Mothers bring their kids in just to see the cars, absolutely,” Jeff says. “We don’t turn anybody away.”

That may be the most telling detail of all.

Today, that legacy continues with Jeff’s son, Joe Cauley, who now serves as co-owner and general manager. Together, the two have elevated the dealership into one of Ferrari’s strongest-performing stores, cultivating relationships with collectors and enthusiasts across the Midwest and beyond.

Ferrari has never just been about horsepower or prestige. It’s about inspiration. It’s about the kid staring at a poster on his bedroom wall. The entrepreneur carrying a photo in his wallet for decades. The lifelong racer still chasing perfection around a track.

In the end, it’s about a family that turned that dream into something real. Don’t miss this year’s Troy Traffic Jam on Sunday, August 2 at the Columbia Center, 201 W. Big Beaver Road. The annual event is a fundraiser for educational programs at Troy Historic Village. Visit TroyHistoricVillage.org/troy-traffic-jam for details.

Welcome to Wilmington, North Carolina, Where Southern Charm Meets the Allure of the Coast

from Cindy

Sometimes the best vacation spots are a short journey from home. Wilmington, North Carolina is less than a two-hour flight from here, is a historic coastal city on the Cape Fear River. Enjoy its riverwalk lined with more than 200 cafes, shops and bars, plus coastal charm and year-round appeal. This is a very walkable city.

Burgwin-Wright House

Do you love history? Tour beautiful downtown Wilmington in a fun and leisurely way in a horse-drawn carriage. See the sights, hear the stories and learn interesting facts dating back centuries. Depending on when you visit, the city offers ghost tours, Christmas Caroling, Valentine’s Sweetheart Rides and more.

We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the historic homes district, rich with centuries of history. At the Bellamy Mansion – built from 1859 to 1861 by skilled enslaved workers and local free artisans under the guidance of two Northern-born architects – visitors can step back into the Civil War era.

The stunning Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is another highlight. It’s hard to imagine this beautiful site was once Wilmington’s first jail. In fact, the stone walls from the 1744 jail now serve as the foundation for the elegant town home John Burgwin constructed in 1770.

Stroll the tree-lined streets between Grace Street and Ann Street, as well as Sixth Street and Water Street, to admire stately, renovated mansions dating back to the Civil War era and beyond, including the Latimer House, constructed in 1852 and open for tours. Visiting these historic homes will make you feel as if you’ve stepped back 160 years in time.

The USS North Carolina , moored near downtown Wilmington, is America’s most decorated WWII battleship and now a memorial for 11,000 fallen service members. Tour its nine levels, check out the engine room, gun turrets, mess hall and barracks, and learn about naval life during the war.

After sampling Wilmington’s award-winning barbeque, fried chicken and fresh seafood (try the soft-shelled crab, shrimp and grouper), we headed for the beach. While Wilmington offers three nearby island beaches – Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach – each with its own unique charm, we opted to visit North Topsail Beach, just 38 miles away.

Debbie Johnston Miller and I became roommates while studying Journalism at the State University of New York at Morrisville. Now living in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Debbie and her husband Craig also own a condo in North Topsail Beach, making it an ideal getaway from the winter chill – and the perfect place for us to visit.

North Topsail Beach, a modest yet expanding residential beach community located at the northern end of Topsail Island, is accessible via a bridge near Sneads Ferry. The area features a tranquil natural environment with expansive, uncrowded beaches and remarkable sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s oriented towards families and offers a variety of water-related activities, such as surf fishing, kayaking, kite flying, beach relaxation, swimming and seashell collecting. You should see the assortment I collected!

North Topsail Beach is a destination where nature leads the way. It’s known for its seasonal sea turtle nests, often safeguarded by local volunteers. This makes it an ideal spot to unwind, watch dolphins from the shore and enjoy a peaceful, slower-paced vacation. Visit WilmingtonAndBeaches.com to

FIRST FULL-SIZE CRICKET FIELD DEBUTS IN BOULAN PARK

“TROY IS CREATING INCLUSIVE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT CELEBRATE THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COMMUNITY.”
– MAYOR ETHAN

BAKER

The sound of leather on willow is echoing through Boulan Park in Troy as the City officially unveiled its first full-size cricket field – a milestone years in the making for one of the region’s fastest-growing sports communities.

With Troy City Council members, community leaders and dozens of local cricket players in attendance, the celebration marked the city’s growing commitment to bringing people together.

“The addition of this regulation-size Cricket Field reflects Troy’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive recreational opportunities that celebrate the diversity of our community,” says Mayor Ethan Baker. “I am especially grateful for the state funding that helped bring this vision to reality.”

The new field features a scoreboard, covered dugouts, permanent sight screens and a hybrid pitch designed for both practice and competitive play.

The project was made possible in part through a $900,000 State of Michigan grant secured by State Sen. Jeremy Moss and State Rep. Sharon MacDonell.

Cricket has seen tremendous growth in Troy in recent years, particularly among younger players and families. City leaders say the new field provides a dedicated home for the sport and new opportunities for community connection and youth engagement. Visit

You May Be Sleeping Wrong

Troy "sleep coaches" blend science and wellness principles to help you finally sleep better

You may be sleeping wrong.

Not “I stayed up too late binge-watching Netflix” wrong. More like your mattress, pillow and sleep position may quietly be working against your body every single night.

That’s the eye-opening message behind Snooze Mattress Company in Troy, a boutique sleep store that approaches mattresses less like furniture and more like wellness technology.

And yes, the staff wears pajamas.

Enter and you’re greeted by these pajama-clad “sleep coaches” who ask questions most mattress stores never even consider.

Are you waking up with shoulder pain? Hip pain? Neck pain? Tossing and turning all night? Feeling exhausted even after eight hours of sleep?

You may not be getting older. You may simply be sleeping wrong.

“We spend a third of our lives on our mattress,” says sleep coach Bree Phillips. “If your spine isn’t properly aligned, your body can’t fully recover the way it’s supposed to.”

That wellness-first philosophy is what inspired owner Jake Wylonis to bring Snooze to Michigan a year ago. After diving deeper into the health-and-wellness world through podcasts and research, he became fascinated by how overlooked sleep had become in the broader wellness conversation.

“We all focus on supplements, workouts and nutrition,” he says. “But if you’re not sleeping well, you can’t be the best version of yourself.”

The centerpiece of the Snooze experience is its “Dream Mapping” technology, a pressure-mapping system that analyzes how your body interacts with different mattresses. As you lie on a specialized bed, sensors identify pressure points, spinal alignment and support needs in real time.

The results can be surprisingly revealing.

“A lot of customers come in convinced they need a firm mattress,” Bree says. “Then we map them and realize their body actually needs something softer and more supportive.”

In other words, your brain may think one thing, while your body is begging for another.

“Customers shop with their brains, but sleep with their bodies,” Bree says with a laugh.

The technology also helps eliminate much of the guesswork. Instead of bouncing between dozens of mattresses, Dream Mapping narrows the field to options tailored specifically to the customer’s body and sleep habits.

And the stories customers tell afterward can be dramatic.

“If you’re not sleeping well, you can’t be the best version of yourself.”
– Jake Wylonis of Snooze Mattress
Sleep coaches Bree Phillips and Andre Smith

Some report their hip and shoulder pain has disappeared. Some say they’re finally sleeping through the night. Others discover that their constant tossing and turning – or repeated late-night trips to the bathroom – may actually have been their body reacting to discomfort all along.

“You can literally hear people sigh with relief sometimes when they lay on the right mattress,” Jake says. “Their body knows immediately.”

One of the brands generating the most buzz right now is Helix, a premium mattress line known for its cooling technology and deep-sleep support.

“A lot of people don’t realize temperature affects sleep tremendously,” Bree says. “If your body overheats during the night, you naturally wake up more often and spend less time in deep sleep.”

Many Helix models include cooling layers designed to disperse body heat and help sleepers stay comfortable longer, along with support systems that contour more naturally to the body.

“It’s been a game changer for us,” Jake says. “Customers come back specifically asking for Helix because they’re noticing such a difference in how they sleep.”

According to Snooze, these customers report deeper sleep, fewer interruptions during the night and waking up feeling more refreshed. Proof, perhaps, that better sleep isn’t just about comfort; it’s about wellness.

Still, despite all the technology, Snooze somehow feels more spa-like than sales-driven.

Customers are encouraged to linger. Test beds. Relax. Ask questions. Learn how to sleep better.

Which, perhaps, is the point.

Because in a world obsessed with optimizing everything else, Snooze is built around a surprisingly simple idea.

Better days begin with better nights.

EXPLORE A DIFFERENT KIND OF FITNESS COACHING –ONE DESIGNED FOR LASTING LIFESTYLE CHANGE

ARTICLE

For many people, the first sign of burnout isn’t physical. It’s the quiet realization that they no longer feel like themselves.

Energy fades. Sleep gets worse. Stress becomes constant. Somewhere between work, caregiving, family and everyday routines, they begin to accept exhaustion as normal.

By the time many clients walk into Detroit Strong Personal Training in Madison Heights, they aren’t necessarily looking to become bodybuilders or fitness models.

They’re looking for a way back to themselves.

Owner and head coach Eshaan Mangal says what people need is rarely just a workout. His private boutique fitness studio specializes in personalized one-on-one coaching, nutritional guidance, holistic body assessments and organic halal meal prep – but beneath all of it is something more personal.

“I consider myself a coach more than a trainer,” Eshaan says. “Everybody’s carrying something: stress, burnout, low confidence, grief, anxiety. I’m trying to help people feel alive again.”

For Eshaan, fitness is helping people rebuild confidence and momentum in their lives.

That philosophy has attracted executives and entrepreneurs, busy parents and retirees. Many arrive feeling disconnected from their own health after years spent putting themselves last.

Helping them transform their health is his specialty.

“As someone who has struggled with my fitness goals my entire life, I truly appreciated the time he took to listen, answer questions and explain his recommendations in a way that felt achievable,” says one client, Lisa. “He offers a welcoming, non-intimidating environment where training is tailored to you, whether you’re just starting out or ready to push yourself to the next level.

“You can tell he really takes care of his clients,” says another client, Lance. “From personal training to nutrition planning to supplement assistance, he will take great care of you as he’s done with me.”

Eshaan’s approach is intentionally different from large commercial gyms. The private setting offers an alternative to crowded gyms and impersonal fitness culture. Programs are tailored to each client’s metabolism, stress levels, goals and lifestyle. Some clients come seeking weight loss. Others simply want more energy, better sleep or relief from chronic stress.

Often, however, the transformation becomes larger than fitness itself.

One client in his fifties initially came to improve his health before his daughter’s wedding. Weeks later, he was feeling better than he had in years.

“You may not realize how bad you feel because you’ve felt that way for so long,” Eshaan says. “Then all of a sudden, once you start working with us, you’re sleeping better, moving better and carrying yourself differently. Everything changes.”

Born in South Africa and raised largely in northwest Detroit, Eshaan says sports became a bridge between cultures during his childhood. Years later, he found himself struggling with health scares of his own – and the unhealthy habits we all battle.

“My dad asked me one time if I was trying to kill myself,” Eshaan recalls. “We were very close. That stopped me in my tracks.”

He began reevaluating what health truly meant. Today, his philosophy extends beyond exercise into stress management, gut health, heart health and confidence. All the things he believes shape how people move through the world.

“This isn’t about becoming somebody else,” he says. “It’s about becoming yourself again.”

Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you? Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
