A special thanks to the ladies in our lives
I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women who make life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And, of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms ... not just biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives – making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role – connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Troy's women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a moment to brighten someone’s day and to remind them how much they are loved and appreciated.

How Alina Postolatii’s passion and personality help her clients find a home
ARTICLE BY SHELLEY GROH PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMRAN BAJWAThe phrase “you don’t know what you don’t know” has never been truer than in today’s real estate market. Alina Postolatii of AP Realty (aprealtyco.com) guides buyers through a record housing shortage and helps sellers prep their homes for top bids.

“Focusing on people and their stories motivates me to be the best version of myself, while helping my clients.”
A charming mother of a 10-year-old and 21-yearold, Alina uses her natural ability to connect with people on a personal level to help make the real estate process enjoyable. “I studied children’s psychology as my major in college, and it’s not that different from understanding adults,” says Alina.
She came to the U.S. in 2001 and speaks four languages (English, German, Russian and Romanian), which helps her not only translate words, but also understand diverse perspectives. Combined with her education-focused approach, Alina makes the often stressful process of searching for a dream home, or making the decision to sell, easy for her clients. “I’ve had clients write reviews saying I’ve changed their view of realtors,” says Alina. “I know what I’m doing; it’s who I am, it’s what I do every day.”
Alina was drawn into real estate 10 years ago, when she was looking for flexibility for her family. “I have
always loved working with people,” she says. “I first went into teaching, then interpreting. Then I met a broker who showed me how I could make my own hours while helping others. It drew my attention.”
Today, she’s a knowledgeable expert in communities from Troy to Jackson to Grosse Pointe and everything in between, maintaining a noteworthy 5.0 rating in her reviews.
One of the questions Alina is asked most is how to prepare a home for selling. “If you’re thinking of selling, start looking for your new house first,” she advises.
If you can find a home you like, or land to build on, then you can put your current house on the market two to three weeks later. To prep a home for sale, Alina conducts a market analysis and walks the property herself. “I know what buyers are looking for and can help them see what they need to upgrade or things they don’t need to touch.”

Top & Bottom:
Alina is right at home in the gorgeous stateof-the-art kitchen vignettes at the EW Kitchens showroom (ewkitchens.com), then relaxes in style in the expertly curated aesthetics of C.A.I. Designs (caidesigns.net), both found within Troy’s Michigan Design Center.
She advises sellers to keep the home as neutral as possible. She can also refer service providers to help clean and fix the house, keeping in mind what the buyer wants to see. She tells clients, “Know your ‘why.’ And get help – it’s easy to get sidetracked when you’re doing it yourself.”
In addition to making a house look appealing, Alina handles the backend of the transaction so that it feels seamless. She advises clients on title companies, inspections and negotiations.
Alina loves her work, and that passion shines through in everything she does. To keep herself centered, she meditates daily and stays focused on her purpose. “Stories inspire me,” she said. “Every household has one. Focusing on people and their stories motivates me to be the best version of myself, while helping my clients.”
Over the past decade, Alina has learned a lot about Southeast Michigan, the real estate industry – and herself. “The biggest lesson was to know my own worth, and how to set boundaries. I’ve always been a negotiator, and I’ve learned how to explore the art of negotiation in the best way possible. I’ve gained strength as a person and as a woman to stay strong in my ethics.”
If you're thinking of buying or selling, call Alina at (734) 358-6303.

Letter to YOUNGER ME
ARTICLE BY KIARA SMITH, REGINA KOLARCHICK AND JULIE FLORES PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMRAN BAJWA
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Dear Younger Regina,
Your life at times will have twists and turns, but you will always be successful with a smile on your face. It was instilled by your parents that education is one of the most important priorities in life, knowledge is power, and silence is acceptance so speak up! You will instill this into your own children and will be a fierce advocate for helping others along the road of life as well. You are a strong, independent soul who at times will need to learn that it is OK to ask for help!
You are a natural-born leader and connector. People are naturally drawn to you, and your kind soul will help anyone who asks. Remember, people are either a blessing or a lesson. Let go of the people who are a lesson, take what you learned from them, and keep moving along on your journey through life. People change. Life constantly changes.
Remember, stay true to yourself and your beliefs. There’s no one quite like you in this world. Stay strong and remember to take opportunities when they come your way.
Love Your Future Self,
Regina Kolarchick Schluter & Hughes Law Firm“Stay true to yourself. There’s no one quite like you in this world.”
Hey Love, I hope you know that you’re the author of your own story.
Here are a few things you’ll need to know as you navigate through life.
Number one, you are worthy of all great things – it’s your birthright. Two, when amazing things happen, don’t second guess it or anticipate the worst (life gets better). Three, stay true to yourself. Being a sweet girl with boundaries will always be the vibe.
Take your time with decisions and let no one rush you. Don’t fight for relationships –attract them. Blessings will show up as a no, or as heartbreak and failures. Be prepared for everything you prayed for. God’s timing is impeccable.
Lastly, take up space and do it big!
Kiara Smith Fresh & Pressed Juice
“You are worthy of all great things – it’s your birthright.”

Little girl,
You are in for such a wonderful life. You will have many trials. You will lose those close to you way too early. But that will teach you to love while you can. Nothing is more important than the people in your life!
Be patient with others. Pay attention to your intuition. If something doesn’t feel right – take a step back and reassess. Give others grace when needed but pay attention to their patterns.
Know that your parents love you very much even when they are strict with you. You will travel all over the world. Swim with stingrays and watch whales leap out of the water with pure joy. Save for the future BUT enjoy the time you have on this earth.

LINDA ROOSE TACKLES BARIATRIC SURGERY TO RESTORE HER HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Robotic procedure puts life back on track

“There’s nothing better than a patient telling me we saved their life. We see them renewed and so grateful. I love it. I could keep doing this forever.”
Linda Roose was enjoying a healthy lifestyle when the world came to a stop from COVID. Her work, exercise and nutrition habits changed overnight – bringing not just additional weight but a lifestyle that wasn’t optimal for the Troy resident.
“I run a business, I’ve raised three children and I’ve always been active,” she says. “Suddenly I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do.”
That’s when she met Beaumont physician David Chengelis, M.D., of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery (dlcsurgery.com).
“I was doing well with the Beaumont Weight Management Group before COVID, so I reached out last year to see about other options. They asked if I had considered surgery.”
She discovered newer minimally invasive procedures could change her lifestyle – and her health.
“My blood pressure and A1C were trending up. That was my initial motivation for having surgery. But I used to be active with my six grandchildren. They like to play board games on the floor, and I couldn’t kneel down anymore. It was hard going to their soccer games. I was losing out on being part of their lives.”
Though initially nervous about the procedure, she found comfort in Dr. Chengelis’ approach. “He was so personable and patient with me. He has a confidence about him, and that gave me confidence this was the right decision. Plus, I liked that he operated robotically, so healing time and risk were more favorable.”
With over 30 years’ experience, Dr. Chengelis is a leading laparoscopic and robotic surgeon. He offers bariatric surgeries such as gastric sleeve and RNY gastric bypass and revision procedures to aid in weight loss. He also performs advanced, minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures for gallbladder issues,
hernias and gastrointestinal reflux. He recently served as president of the Michigan Bariatric Society.
And he’s performed several thousand weight loss surgeries – experience Linda could trust.
“It’s pretty exciting to see people change their life,” says Dr. Chengelis. “There’s nothing better than a patient telling me we saved their life. We see them renewed and so grateful. I love it. I could keep doing this forever.“
Only one percent of people who could benefit from this surgery are having it. Dr. Chengelis knows many more can experience a renewed lifestyle by taking that first step.
“Ask questions. Learn more. Look at the joy in those who have made this decision. You’ll discover you can do it, too.”
After surgery, life for Linda improved dramatically. “I was up and moving right away. I don’t know if it was because the surgery was done with a robot or I heal fast or Dr. Chengelis is that good – probably all three – but I was back to work quickly. People don’t even know I had surgery.”
Her greatest change? “Before, I couldn’t focus on preparing a healthy meal because my mind was always telling me how hungry I was. Now, my mind is quiet. I feel amazing. I have energy and my A1C, blood sugar and blood pressure are normal again.”
Linda spends more active time with her grandchildren now – including board games on the floor. And she’s conquered another goal: Riding her bicycle.
“I used to ride for miles every day. I wanted to ride again,” she says. “My goal was never about weight. It was about getting my health back. The bonus is, I like how people smile at me again.”

LEARN TO STRETCH AND BREATHE
In August 2014, Troy resident Amy Satterfield opened Explore Yoga in Troy, an anatomy-inspired yoga studio. Yoga is often perceived as only another form of exercise because of its ability to help us with physical health through various bodyweight movements; maintain full range of motion through all of our joints; build strength through concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions of our muscles; and stretch tissue to build an overall strong and resilient body.
“What’s unique about yoga, and what sets it apart from other forms of physical movement modalities, is that it’s highly effective at helping with our mental health and wellness. Its emphasis on deep, conscious breathing helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, creating a relaxation response that can mitigate the effects of the chronic stress so many of us experience today,” Amy says.

SCHEDULE YOUR MAMMOGRAM NOW
Each year, 40,000 women die from breast cancer. Studies show that starting yearly mammograms at age 40 helps cut breast cancer deaths by more than 40 percent. What’s more, three out of four women with breast cancer have no family history of the disease and no obvious risk factors, other than being women. So it’s very important to get annual screenings, which can detect a small cancer before any symptoms develop and give the best chance for a cure.
“We recommend all women have a formal risk assessment with a health care provider before age 40, to determine if they are at higher risk for developing breast cancer and might benefit from earlier screening,” says Alit Yousif, M.D., Director of Breast Imaging at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology. “For women with dense breast tissue, we offer 3D mammography and screening breast ultrasound for additional surveillance.”

IMPROVE
YOUR PELVIC HEALTH
“Let our therapists help you take control of your bladder so you can laugh more, worry less,” says Harnisha Shah, owner of FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers of Troy. That's because more than 25 million Americans are affected by urinary incontinence and are three times more likely to experience a fall.
Pelvic floor disorders cause uncomfortable symptoms, such as urine leakage and constipation and/or pain, and it can lead to embarrassing and disabling limitations in daily life. Yet it often can be treated without surgery. Enjoying a pain-free life with good bladder and bowel control, physical activity, laughter and sexual health require healthy pelvic floor muscles.
