Beyond
Invest in YOU this spring
By definition, investment is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result.
In other words, putting everything you've got into your priorities.
Your future. Your family. Your legacy. You.
There are, of course, so many ways to invest ourselves. We can invest in our community by supporting Troy businesses or by volunteering with Troy schools and nonprofits.
We can stay educated and involved with future city planning.
We can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people who mean the most to us.
We can – and should – invest financially to meet long-term goals and secure our ability to retire. And so we can be in a position to help those around us.
As John Wesley said more than three centuries ago: Earn all you can, save all you can and give all you can.
In this month's issue, we touch on the theme of Investment in several different ways – investing in your mental health and quality of life through travel. Making sure you'll be able to retire by developing a plan that aligns with your goals, with help from local advisor Chuck Vercellone.
How should we invest our time, wealth and health to achieve longevity? Former Troy Mayor Jeanne Stine is loving life at age 95, and she lets us in on her secrets to a rewarding life.
And let's not forget that it's spring, so it's time to plan spring flower gardens and landscapes that bring us joy throughout the summer.
Visit us on Facebook or Instagram and let us know where you plan to make your investments this year – financially, socially, emotionally or spiritually. We hope you'll invest in a healthier you this year.

Planting Spring Flowers
Helpful tips for planting spring flowers
Sun-Loving Plants:
Spring is here! We compiled a list of flowers that - depending on your planting zone - can be planted in the season.
Plumbago
Has beautiful dark blue or white flowers on a large shrub of 3 to 5 feet. This tends to freeze down in winter and comes back from roots in the spring.
Hibiscus
The tropical variety will not survive the winters so move those pots inside. The plant can get up to 5 feet tall and there are many different colors and varieties. The perennial varieties will freeze to the ground but come back in the spring. The variety Moy Grande is known as the dinner plate hibiscus. The Texas star hibiscus has beautiful flowers in red or white.
Bougainvillea
These colorful plants can be planted in baskets and pots, not in water-logged or low areas where water might collect. They will grow best when given enough space to spread out, and should be planted in an area that will allow them a minimum of 5-6 hours of sunlight every day. Colors include orange, pink, purple, white, red, tangerine and fuschia to name a few.
Purslane
This is great in baskets for trailing leaves with lots of colors. The bees love it!
Butterfly Weed
This 3 to 4-foot bush is a must for monarch lovers. Monarchs feed on the leaves before making their cocoons. It has beautiful orange and yellow flowers.

Shade-Loving Plants:
Lantana
This is a great hot weather plant that comes in many colors and varieties. Trailing varieties only get about 1 foot tall but can get 3 to 4 feet wide. There are bush varieties that get 4 feet tall and dwarf bushes only get about 2 feet tall. It comes in yellows, purples, reds, oranges, pinks, fuschia, and many others.
Greggs Blue Mist
This fuzzy light blue flower is a butterfly favorite.
Pentas
This is another bee and butterfly favorite that grows about 10 to 12 inches tall. There is a graffiti variety in different colors that works in beds or pots.
Vinca/Periwinkle
This plant comes in upright or trailing varieties. There are many colors to choose from: lavender, white with a red center, peach, white and red pink to strawberry.
Sages
There are many varieties of sage. The Texas sage is a shrub that has beautiful lavender flowers - a favorite for bees. They usually bloom around the time it rains. Henry Duelberg variety is a smaller bush 18 to 20 inches tall with blue stalks of blooms. Russian Sage is a tall silver lacey foliage with light blue flower spikes and grows to 4 feet tall. Deer tend to stay away from most of the sages.
Turk’s Cap
This plant makes a large bush of red or pink flowers. It has low water needs once established and can tolerate drought conditions and hot temperatures. Prune back plant in winter if it gets too leggy.
Impatiens
These need more water than most other plants and come in many colors. They are valued for their vibrant colors, abundant blooms, and tolerance for shade.
Caladiums
With lush multicolored leaves, many larger than the palm of your hand, caladiums have become one of the most popular foliage plants for shady or semi-shady gardens—with many recent introductions being sun tolerant.

Jeanne Stine: Investing in a well-lived life
MAYOR REFLECTS ON HARD WORK, POLITICS AND HOW TO FIND TRUE PURPOSE IN LIFE
TROY’S FORMER
If you ask former Troy Mayor Jeanne Stine the secret to a long life, she’s quick to say, ”Staying busy doing things you love.” And she has lived by this creed since she was very young.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD
The oldest of 11 children born to Eleanor and Lyle Goodwin, I was born June 18, 1929 in Birmingham. I had seven younger sisters and three younger brothers, and as a child, I was given a lot of responsibility.
I attended Holy Name Grade School and consider that a great educational beginning. My mother instilled in all of her children a love for reading and a love for good books. I still remember and treasure our Saturday morning story hours.

WHAT SPECIAL MEMORIES DO YOU HAVE GROWING UP?
One of the things that was so meaningful in assisting me in accomplishing what I have done in my life is the fact that my mother taught us to have faith in God and believe in ourselves. You can do anything you want to do and be anything you want to be, but you have to work hard for it.
WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE TO YOUR LONG LIFE?
My mom, Eleanor Goodwin, lived to the age of 97. I feel that to have a long and happy life, you have to stay busy and do what you love. It's an investment. I love being busy, whether it's teaching, counseling students, being Troy’s Mayor or, now, driving senior citizens to church and special needs adults to the grocery or Troy Library.
WHAT JOBS HAVE YOU HELD OVER THE YEARS?
When I was in eighth grade, I desperately wanted to go to Little Flower High School for Girls, but I knew my Dad couldn’t afford it. I got a scholarship for the first year and had to work weekends ironing and scrubbing floors. At 16, I got an after-school job as a telephone operator with Michigan Bell. After graduation in 1947, I continued to work with Michigan Bell, but by the time I turned 20, it wasn’t fun anymore. So, I joined the convent, thinking I’d give my life to God, but convent life was not for me. I believe I am still doing God’s work, but in a different way. After the convent I turned to the newspaper business, working two years for the Daily Tribune selling advertising. But the realization came to me that I needed to hitch my star to something that would offer security, so I went back to school. I enrolled at Wayne State part-time, not knowing exactly what I wanted to study.
WHY DID YOU BECOME A TEACHER?
When I was a young girl, I thought that when I grew up I might like to be a librarian, secretary or school teacher. I settled on teacher and started taking classes. I worked as a secretary while going to school. I was almost 30 years old before I received my bachelor’s degree and started teaching. My first teaching position was seventh grade at Guardian Angels School in Clawson. Five years later, I earned my master’s. I was hired by the Clawson School District and switched from teaching to counseling, spending 28 years working with parents, teachers and kids, helping solve real-life problems.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO POLITICS?
Because of my husband Jack, who, like my Dad, had an avid interest in politics. He thought I had such an

interesting history that I should run for a one-year, unexpired term on Troy City Council. He thought it was time for a woman, but I was scared to death; what did I know about local city government? Jack convinced me to run since it was only for one year. That was easy for him to say, because I had to study hard. That one year grew into 30 years. It seems unbelievable. I served as a City Councilwoman for 16 years, was elected Mayor in 1992, and was re-elected Mayor in 1995 and 1998. Unfortunately, due to term limits, I couldn't run as Mayor again, but I did get elected to City Council again in 2003.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF DURING YOUR TIME AS COUNCILMEMBER AND MAYOR?
My 30 years on Troy City Council can never be duplicated. It was a labor of love and sharing. The accomplishments were possible only through team efforts – family, friends, Council, staff and many others. I have always had a special bond with children long after my teaching and counseling career ended. One of my proudest accomplishments was getting a youth bureau established within the Troy Police Department. When they would pick up a kid, there was no

connection, no one-on-one familiarity. It makes all the difference to a young person to have police officers involved in their life if they are needed. I love that we now have police officers in our schools. I also founded Troy Youth Services in the 1970s, before there was Troy Youth Assistance or social workers in the schools. When Troy Youth Assistance started, I became a volunteer for many years and still offer services for any fundraisers.
My husband Jack was a volunteer firefighter in Troy and I was a charter member of the Troy Firefighters Women’s Auxiliary. Anytime there was a house fire in Troy, the other ladies and I would be on hand with coffee, blankets and information on places to stay. I've volunteered for many local non-profit organizations including the Troy Community Coalition, Boys & Girls
Club of Troy, Rotary Club of Troy, Clawson/Troy Elks, American Red Cross and Troy Historical Society, to name a few. I was also honored to be named Troy’s Distinguished Citizen in 1985 for my volunteer service to our community.
DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE STARTING OUT?
What a learning experience I have had and how many wonderful people I have met during my 94 years on this earth. Think positive, work hard and you can change the world. “Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you accept it and what you do about it. A positive attitude will allow you to be anything you want to be.”

Pickleball is a smash in Troy
Here’s where to play – and where beginners can get started with lessons
Ready for a workout that helps you meet new friends? Try pickleball, the social sport that’s taking the City of Troy like a, well, like an overhead smash shot.
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America, described as a combination of ping-pong, tennis and badminton. It’s fun, social and friendly. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but it can develop into a fast-paced competitive game.
Best of all, pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors, so you can play year-round.
“I like it because it was easy to learn and it’s a good workout,” says Gert Paraskevin, a City of Troy retiree. “It’s not overly strenuous and a lot of fun. It’s a social event that gets me out of the house and meeting a lot of different people from all walks of life.”
Nancy Morrison, Executive Director of the Troy Community Coalition, agrees. “I usually play for two hours at a time and the time goes by so fast. I feel a sense of community when I play, meeting so many
nice people who are now my friends. I’m competitive and we challenge each other to continue to improve our game. As a group, we go to dinner or the show, so we’re now friends on and off the court. It’s been a very positive life-changing experience.” Ready to play? According to pickleheads.com , these are the best courts in Troy:

RECHARGING YOUR SOUL IN
Travel is no longer just a luxury, it’s an investment that has the power to enrich our lives in ways that traditional financial investments cannot. It broadens our horizons, enhances personal and professional growth, and allows you to recharge your mind and body.

TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL 22
Crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers.
Cancún is known around the world as one of Mexico’s finest tourist destinations. Steeped in the rich history of the Mexican Caribbean, Cancún offers visitors the best that the Yucatán Peninsula has to offer. Whether you are coming for the all-inclusive resort experience or are looking to enjoy the seemingly never-ending gorgeous beaches, Cancún has it all. Unbelievably fresh and delicious seasonal cuisine, great weather, a rich cultural history, exquisitely clear turquoise blue Caribbean waters, and vibrant coral reefs are all waiting for you to explore when you arrive.
Nature lovers, environmentalists, thrill seekers, and luxury destination travel enthusiasts all have a place to call home in Cancún. Boulevard Kukulkan, more commonly known as the Hotel Zone, is home to Cancún’s most luxurious all-inclusive hotels and boasts some of the city’s finest restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping centers. This fifteen-mile-long sand bar separates the Caribbean Sea from the Laguna Inchoate. The brackish waters of
the lagoon’s nature reserve and Mangrove ecosystem offer an exciting, ecologically friendly look into the rich natural history of Cancún. On the other side of the boulevard, crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers.
The JW Marriott Resort and Spa is the place to stay while in Cancún. You'll be met by the most gracious of staff and a high level of service is standard across the property. This impeccably designed resort features multiple pools, an incredible spa, countless delicious restaurants, and a delightful lobby bar featuring over 150 signature margaritas.
Caring for the mind and body should be an essential part of everyone’s travel. A little physical exercise is a necessary element of any vacation for me. Puerto Maya Cancún combines a look into the historical Mayan culture of the Yucatán followed by an amazing speed boat tour of both the lagoon and the sea. And, just when you think it can’t get any better, it’s time to jump in and swim around. Snorkeling on the vibrant coral reefs and visiting MUSA, the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, absolutely recharges the mind, body, and soul. It is an incredible workout!

that is both invigorating and spiritually refreshing at the same time. There are over 6000 cenotes on the Yucatán, each one is unique and otherworldly. Floating or frolicking in the cool waters inside the earth is the ultimate spa experience. There are zip lines or diving platforms at most cenotes and they are well worth experiencing.
While it is nice to explore the “Hotel Zone”, you don't have to leave the hotel to experience fine international dining at its best!
Sacbé Beach Shack, located in the adjoining Marriott property was beyond belief. Situated directly on the sandy beaches beneath the hotel, the "beach shack" is a whimsically designed bar and dining room offering a perfect oceanside culinary experience. The freshest local ingredients were artfully combined to create a scrumptious offering that highlights regional Mexican cuisines. The mezcal lab experience with famed Master Mezcalier, Chef Benjamín Nava Vargas was an unexpected treat and opened a door to a delicious understanding and appreciation of small-batch mezcals.
Other JW Marriott Resort and Spa culinary treasures include Hana Polynesian Grill’s themed dining room. Perfectly crafty cocktails paired wonderfully with the authentic Polynesian Islands menu. The evening’s festivities were highlighted by a completely themed costumed troupe of singers and dancers performing time-honored Polynesian fire dances. While visiting, be sure to explore Kasai Izakaya, Club 91, and Bravo, a very fresh take on modern Spanish cuisine.
And, when it feels like it’s time to leave the hotel again, check out Chambao Cancún. Just think of it as an interactive curated dinner theatre experience with pop-up music, dance, fashion, and acrobatic activations staged throughout the evening.
Cancún should be at the top of everyone’s travel list in 2024. Trust me, you can thank me later.

CAN YOU REALLY RETIRE?
Chuck Vercellone will never forget the day his father came home from work without a job.
ARTICLE BY TODD HAIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMRAN BAJWA
“He was a pencil and paper draftsman his whole life. Then, one day, his company was bought out and he lost his job. There he was, in his early 60s, with no retirement plan or CAD

Here’s how to pay for the longest vacation of your life: Retirement

experience, nothing but a small IRA. He ended up working part-time as a janitor, cleaning restrooms and emptying trash cans. In those first couple of years, I watched him age a decade.”
It was a defining moment for Chuck, who vowed two things – to plan his own successful retirement and to help others do the same.
“It motivated me to really think about what I do for clients,” says Chuck, owner of Wealth Strategies Group in Troy. “Financial advisors don’t just move dollars back and forth. You're placing your financial future in our hands. We had better be serious about it.”
Successful retirement takes a plan, and that’s where he begins. Not an off-the-shelf, cookie-cutter one, either.
“Your plan should be personal to you. It should identify your goals, so you can understand what resources you’ll need to achieve them. If you skip the plan, how will you know if you’re making progress?"
Some experts quote “Rules of Thumb” when determining how much you’ll need for retirement. Chuck says that’s not always accurate. After all, everyone’s thumbs are different, and it’s the wrong question, anyway.
“How much you need depends on what you want to accomplish in retirement. That’s the real question. Do you want to travel? Buy a boat? Support favorite charities? Maybe you’ll need no more than your current income, but maybe you will. It depends on your goals. Let’s work that out, so you’re not surprised in the end.”
Every life change – marriages, career changes, even grandchildren – will impact that plan. That’s why he recommends annual reviews.
“I check in regularly with my clients to see what’s happened in their life that might affect their retirement goals, such as a change in employment, new grandchild or marriage or divorce in the family,” he says.

“Or perhaps you’ve just changed your objectives, which could alter how much you’ll need in retirement.”
And his best clients? "People who think they can’t retire. Those who don’t hear from their financial advisor regularly or have a current plan aligned with their goals. I get to show them they can retire.”
THE BEST TIME FOR A PLAN
Chuck also focuses on helping clients during key milestones in life:
1. Adult children starting out. Even if you invest, your college-age children have different goals and needs. Chuck can help them begin their careers with smart saving and investing habits.
2. Mid-career individuals and couples. If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s – about halfway to retirement – this is the time for a plan review that can identify new opportunities. A plan correction can project if you’ll be successful in retirement – before it’s too late.
3. Almost to the end of your career? Your life goals have changed, so your retirement expectations should adjust as well. Make the most of your final earning years with a fresh look at your plan before you reach the final stretch.
Chuck has all the credentials, of course. He is an Investment Advisor Representative of Sigma Planning Corporation, a Registered Investment Advisor and a Registered Representative of Sigma Financial Corporation, Member FINRA/SIPC. Wealth Strategies Group, LLC is not affiliated with Sigma Planning Corp. or Sigma.
That said, Chuck believes financial advising is about relationships as much as dollars and cents.

Debbie, Mia, Sofia and Chuck
“My best clients are people who think they can’t retire. Those who don’t hear from their financial advisor regularly or have a current plan aligned with their goals. I get to show them they can retire.”
“I build relationships with clients based on shared values. I take the time to explain everything, so they feel comfortable, confident and in control of their money,” he says. “I treat clients like family and friends.”
Today, he takes his own advice. Although not retired – or even near it – his plan allows him to spend time with his family, especially his wife Debbie, daughters Lauren and Allison, and granddaughters Sofia and Mia.
“We love the grandchildren,” he smiles. “They live not far from us, so we see them often. I’m experiencing what I want my clients to experience – the ability to enjoy life when you’ve carefully prepared.”
He also volunteers across the community, at Kensington Church and the Troy Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the Board of Directors and is currently a chamber ambassador.
He beams as he shares his oft-repeated line: “I help my clients add the initials RET after their last name. That stands for RETIRED.”
It's not just a saying. It’s a point of pride for the man determined to help others reach retirement with dignity.
“I want you to have confidence, to retire on your own terms," he says, "so you don’t have to go through what my father did.”
