Congratulations, we've made it to another year! For most of us, that means new horizons and new goals. The chance for a reset. And, possibly, some baggage from last year to deal with. January can remind us either of past failed attempts ... or of the endless second chances we get in life. What will make 2024 different? C.S. Lewis gave us the answer when he said, "You can't go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are and change the ending.” That's the opportunity before each of us right now. Start over. Start again. Have a new vision. The question is, where will we find people who inspire us to make lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to our physical and emotional health? That's our approach with this edition of Troy City Lifestyle. Patrizia Jesue of Nutrition Counseling Center does that every day for those with eating disorders and body image concerns. She'll help you create a new relationship with food, one that brings peace to everyday life. Dr. Brittany VanBuskirk – a second-generation dentist – offers new reasons to smile, especially for those not happy with their teeth. Dr. Leigh Elceser of Joslyn Chiropractic Center explains her holistic approach to wellness, as she restores patients to good health. Finally, the physical therapy team at Pure HealthyBack achieves incredible results in relieving back pain and restoring movement, in part because they were once patients themselves. All around us are top-rated, highly personable practitioners with hands and hearts that heal. Start the new year with a change. A new physical therapist or chiropractor. A new dentist. A new view of food. This is our chance to change our ending by starting where we are today. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. It is a cold Saturday morning, but the former Boys & Girls Club in Pontiac is warmed by excitement as busloads of inner-city children pull up to the door. The glow – and noise – increase as hundreds of youth rush through the doors for a day of skits, music and games in a safe place. This is The Power Company Kids Club, a nonprofit formed 30 years ago to bring laughter, leadership and love to underserved children. And behind it all stand generous donors, like Leigh Elceser. Doctor Leigh, actually, of Joslyn Chiropractic Center (joslynchiropractic.com), a women-owned, faith-based practice providing chiropractic care, massage therapy and nutritional counseling. You can’t spend more than a few moments with Dr. Leigh before her wit and smile break through. You’ll also realize, as she moves with precision from X-rays to treatment to counseling, that she’s unflinchingly serious about your recovery. “My commitment is to take care of people in every way. Our bodies innately want to be healthy without surgery or medication. That’s what we do.” CONTINUED >

Healing bodies, however, is not enough. “Yes, we want to heal pain through chiropractic care, but we also care about emotional and spiritual well-being,” she says. “That’s why we support nonprofits like The Power Company Kids Club. There are so many people who just need to be loved on.” She is reminded of her own childhood in West Virginia. “I was the oldest of five kids from a single mom who stole food to survive. It was a tough background.” Athletic scholarships helped pay for classes at Palmer University in Iowa. Afterward, she stayed on as a recruiter for the chiropractic college until she convinced them to admit her as a student – for free. “I didn’t make it to chiropractic college until I was 31. I was like the den mother,” she grins. She was also class president, a harbinger of her later success. Now, after twice being named Chiropractor of the Year, she reflects on her legacy. “Chiropractic is more than straightening spines. It’s about helping you enjoy a greater quality of life through optimal nervous system function and healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercise, diet and supplementation." Although still in her original building in Pontiac (just 15 minutes from Troy), her practice attracts middle-class and affluent families and executives from Troy, Rochester, Madison Heights and Clarkston who travel for her unique blend of personality and personalized service. And to be cared for by her longtime team: Angela Howe, Kelly Dunn and Staci Weyer. “We like to develop lasting relationships. What makes us feel best is to walk alongside you in your journey of pain and recovery. We care about you as a person, not just your condition. That’s our mission of health.”

14

G IV IN G BAC K | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

And, apparently, her mission of giving. “Her generosity makes a real difference for our kids,” says Aaron Robinson, chief operating officer of Power Company. “She helps us stay consistent in making sure hundreds of children experience joy and love, not to mention meals every week.” Hers was an unlikely journey from poverty in West Virginia to affluence in a thriving chiropractic practice. The common thread: Holistic care for her community. “Sometimes we have to make sacrifices to meet goals, and mine were to take care of people. That’s where my heart is.” You’ll find Dr. Leigh at joslynchiropractic.com or (248) 332-0111.

Physical therapist Mike Mulcahy knew the treatments, the stretches, the therapies. After all, he had managed a physical therapy clinic and treated neck and spine patients for more than 15 years. But he didn’t know the pain. Not until he suffered a herniated cervical disc in his own neck. At that moment, stepping over from caregiver to consumer, Mike gained a deeper appreciation for what his patients experience. “You can’t fully understand nerve pain until you have it yourself. Suddenly, I was the one needing therapy.” It was life-changing, says Mike, who is a senior physical therapist at Pure HealthyBack in Troy (purehealthyback.com/locations/troy). “After persevering through that type of pain, I think I can identify better with what my patients are going through.” He remembers the medications, the struggle to keep working, sleeping in a recliner because stretching out in bed was too painful. So, he turned to the same physical therapy regimen he offers to patients. It worked. “I went in three times a week like my patients do, exercised at home and was able to avoid surgery. It taught me a lot about what it takes to be a patient, that’s for sure.” It also reinforced the power of two techniques offered exclusively by Pure HealthyBack – MedX equipment and The McKenzie Method. MedX – available in Michigan only at Pure HealthyBack – is the sole technology available for isolating body parts, testing specific muscle groups, and strengthening and rehabilitating the surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments. The McKenzie Method is a comprehensive approach that emphasizes injury intervention and prevention, empowering patients with lifelong management skills.

Together, they are yielding incredible results at Pure HealthyBack. “We get the best patient outcomes I’ve seen in my 30-year career," says Mike. "The McKenzie Method can reduce a patient’s pain from day one, and MedX is extremely effective in treating back pain. MedX isolates the deep spinal muscles by preventing movement in the pelvis and firing of the hip and leg muscles. This allows the spine to move smoothly and restore normal firing of the deep spinal stabilizers through a pain-free range of motion.” In other words, MedX isolates the muscles needing conditioning to create a strong spine, so you can do the things you love. Things like standing straight, walking pain-free – or growing your family. Rachel Cynowa was trying to get through her pregnancy when she suffered a painful injury. “Carrying my son really hurt my back. Suddenly, my legs were throbbing. I couldn’t do dishes or other chores. I would do a little bit, then have to rest. I told myself I couldn’t live like that.” Fortunately, as operations manager at Pure HealthyBack, she knew exactly what to do – MedX – because she has guided countless patients toward the same therapy. Using MedX, her physical therapist targeted the problem area. With McKenzie, she was given specific stretches to do in therapy and at home. “My eighth visit was the sweet spot. Suddenly, I didn’t have pain in my legs anymore. I still do the stretches at home and the pain has never returned.” You know something works when people take their own medicine. “We get a lot of patients who have been through physical therapy somewhere else and still have pain,” says Mike. “You might say that’s our specialty.” Take your first step toward pain-free living by calling Rachel at (888) 396-2642. NUTRITIONIST’S LIFELONG LOVE OF COOKING INSPIRES HER TO HELP OTHERS STAY HEALTHY

FOOD FOR WELLNESS 20

M UST SE E | L I FE + C ULTU RE

Before you make those tough-to-keep New Year’s resolutions, like joining the gym or counting calories, change your relationship with food with the help of the team at the Nutrition Counseling Center (nutritioncounselingcenter.com).

In fact, holidays smell like lasagna, sausage and peppers to Patrizia. Her strong Italian roots (her parents were born in Italy) mean family gatherings are celebrated with home-cooked meals made from generational recipes.

“WE WANT YOU TO HAVE PEACE WITH YOUR BODY AND PEACE WITH YOUR FOOD.” “We want you to have peace with your body and peace with your food,” says Registered Dietitian Patrizia Jesue, founder of the center, which has offices in Troy and Clarkston. Many of us start each new year with another list of personal goals that are sometimes heavily influenced by Photoshopped social media and big advertising campaigns. These media messages often leave out the most important goal – health and wellness. That’s why the team of dietitians at the Nutrition Counseling Center blend the science of nutrition with the art of therapy. Inspired results often follow. “It’s not something we’re able to overcome in one or two sessions. It’s a journey. But I find my clients learn to trust me because I live my life this way, too. I have a healthy relationship with food, so they see it can be done.”

“When I cook, it brings me joy to see people eat,” she says. “It’s my passion to help people discover enjoyment and pleasure from food. After all, we have to eat every day for the rest of our lives.” With clients, she begins by helping them see the barriers they may have with food and understand how it impacts their values in life. “Nutrition is holistic. It doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all definition. We work together in a way that aligns all your recovery goals, which we will come up with collaboratively.” She also supports clients by eating together in the office. “As we build trust, yes, I eat with patients right in the office. Soon, they see that food is safe, it’s not going to harm them, and they realize they can have a healthy relationship, too.” CONTINUED >

Her family is sports-centered, so the nutritional needs of athletes are addressed through the Intuitive Movement & Personal Training program. “The intuitive movement program is designed for all fitness levels, and it’s ideal for athletes in recovery, who are trying to integrate back into their sport,” she says. “Meeting with our specialized personal trainer gives you the opportunity to experience a fun, enjoyable and body positive encounter that will improve your strength, agility and balance.” Patrizia’s passion for food and her love for people keep her encouraged through counseling sessions where clients often reveal their deepest pains and fears related to food, family and life. She strives to help others make healthy transformations, teaching fearless enjoyment, worthiness and Photoshop-free lives. Join one of her 2024 groups – Intuitive Eating Workshop and The Anti-Diet Revolution – or contact Patrizia for private counseling at (248) 686-0340.

“IT’S MY PASSION TO HELP PEOPLE DISCOVER ENJOYMENT AND PLEASURE FROM FOOD.”

NUTRITION COUNSELING IN TWO EASY STEPS First is the initial evaluation, a comprehensive session that gives you an opportunity to meet with your dietitian and share your story. This time will be centered around taking a detailed history of your relationship with food. This thorough yet safe process helps build the foundation for reaching goals in future sessions. You will also have an opportunity to learn about your dietitian and make sure it is a good fit for you. Second, follow-up sessions take place on a regularly scheduled basis – weekly, every other week or monthly. These are designed to start addressing the goals that were brought up in the initial comprehensive session. The goal over time is to reduce the frequency of these sessions as you move forward on your journey.

Double the Trouble and Joy DENTIST FINDS TWIN REASONS TO SMILE: HER CHILDREN AND PATIENTS

Twins. Sometimes they’re double trouble. Other times, they’re double the joy. “We have four-year-old twins, and it’s one of the coolest things,” says Brittany VanBuskirk, D.D.S. “The special bond, growing up together, doing things together because they’re the same age.” Liam and Sophie give Dr. Brittany and her husband, Kevin, double the reasons to smile. It’s the perfect achievement for children of a dentist. “They do smile a lot,” laughs Dr. Brittany (VanBuskirkDental.com). “Liam has started drawing, and it’s funny because he draws people with great big teeth, big smiles and rosy cheeks. I like that he thinks of people as having big smiles and happy faces.” This is how Dr. Brittany wants to see her patients. Many patients lack confident smiles because of crooked, gapped, chipped or discolored teeth. “If you’re embarrassed for some reason, we can help. We’ve seen patients cry with joy after we finish their care, once we show them their new or brightened smile.” It’s a legacy that began with her father, Dr. Kevin Schierlinger, who previously owned the practice. She followed in his footsteps, earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Detroit Mercy and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the university’s School of Dentistry.

Her father retired in 2021 after 39 years, allowing him more time to spend with his grandkids, and leaving his daughter and his longtime team to move forward with the practice. “We have an amazing team that has been here for 20 years on average. Our office manager, Dayna Thomas, has managed the practice since I was a child. That means we really know our patients. And we see entire families – parents, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles. We hear everything going on in their lives from soccer tournaments to births, weddings, and graduations.” Best of all, their patients are treated by the same friendly and caring staff they have come to know and trust. “People look forward to seeing their own hygienist to catch up with them. It’s like seeing your hairstylist. We enjoy the rapport and the relationships,” says Dr. Brittany. She allows extra time with new patients to get to know them. “We could schedule less time with our patients, but we plan for more to get to know them as a person, not just their mouth.” Maybe that’s why she has so many top reviews. Like Carol, who says, “Our family loves this dental practice! Everyone is kind and welcoming. The staff is knowledgeable and competent and goes out of their way to ensure that you have a positive experience.” CONTINUED >

“We want you to be comfortable. We develop relationships with our clients, so they are confident and relaxed. We want to give you a reason to smile.”

The smile is only one part of the care plan. Dr. Brittany and her team make sure to incorporate your overall health within the dental treatment. “Our primary focus is to help you prevent cavities and gum disease, because that not only affects your oral health, but your overall health as well.” she says. “Gum disease has been linked to other health conditions and prevention is key. We teach proper home care to make your regular dental visits more effective.” Dr. Brittany understands that some patients feel uneasy about their dental visits. “We want you to be comfortable. We develop relationships with our patients, so they are confident and relaxed. We take the time to listen to your concerns, and do everything we can to put you at ease. We want to give you a reason to smile.” Dr. Brittany's reason is her twins. Discover your reason to smile by making an appointment at (248) 720-1308.
