Our Thankful Issue In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and achieving goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. CRANBERRY + ALMOND CROISSANT BREAD PUDDING Serves 4-6 people • 2 CUPS MILK • ¼ CUP BUTTER • 2 LARGE EGGS, BEATEN • 1 TEASPOON CINNAMON • 1 Pinch NUTMEG • ½ TEASPOON VANILLA EXTRACT CRANBERRY + ALMOND CROISSANT BREAD PUDDING

¼ TEASPOON SALT ½ CUP SUGAR 2 oz DRIED CRANBERRIES 7 CUPS CROISSANTS, CUT INTO 1 INCH CUBES (about 6 croissants) • 2 oz SLICED ALMONDS, TOASTED 1. Pre-heat oven to 350’ 2. Microwave the butter approximately 1 minute until the butter is melted 3. In a large mixing bowl, mix the butter, milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt together. 4. Stir in cubed croissants, dried cranberries, and almonds until the croissants are well coated and the craisins & almonds are evenly distributed. 5. Pour the mixture into a greased casserole pan. You can use butter or pan spray to coat the pan. 6. Bake uncovered for approximately 25-30 minutes. If the top begins to brown too quickly, cover with for and continue cooking. 7. Allow to cool for 30 minutes before serving. Serve with whipped cream or white chocolate sauce.

FALL HARVEST OLD FASHIONED Needed Items • ¼ cup CINNAMON & SUGAR MIX • 1 ea ORANGE, CUT IN HALF • 1ea ROCKS GLASS

• 1ea LARGE ICE CUBE OR SPHERE • 1ea DEHYDRATED APPLE WHEEL • 1ea CINNAMON STICK Recipe • 2oz KNOB CREEK BOURBON • 0.75oz FRESH PRESSED APPLE CIDER • 0.5oz CINNAMON + DEMERARA SUGAR SIMPLE SYRUP • 2 dashes ORANGE BITTERS • 2 dashes ANGOSTURA BITTERS Instructions 1. Roll the rim of the rocks glass on the cut in half orange and then dip it into the cinnamon and sugar mixture. 2. Add the ice cube, bourbon, cider, simple syrup and bitters. 3. Swirl with a teaspoon until mixed. 4. Garnish with dehydrated apple wheel and a cinnamon stick 5. ENJOY!

Riptide Society Providing a Lifeline of Hope ARTICLE BY JAY GRISHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RIPTIDE SOCIETY

We recently had the opportunity to interview Riptide Society co-founder and Chairman, Todd Young, about the organization’s beginnings, successes, and goals. In a world where many young adults and at-risk youth find themselves caught in the turbulent waves of life's challenges, the Riptide Society stands as a beacon of hope and support. It all began seventeen years ago, when Todd noticed that while foster care helped children under the age of eighteen, there was a gap in the care for children who had aged-out, but weren’t ready to be out on their own. “That’s when you need a parent the most, to help strategize what the future

holds,” Todd says. “What do you want to do? What are your goals, what are your dreams, what are your strengths? Do you want to go to college and what happens after college? There are so many things that were left in the journey, and the journey doesn’t end.” One day, Todd asked the CEO of a local foster care facility if she knew of someone who had gone through more than anybody else. And immediately, the CEO said, “Peyton.” Through spending time and building trust with Peyton, they were able to get enough resources together to get her a doctor appointment, get her a pair of eyeglasses, and get her into college. “Just like a parent doesn’t only help their children with three or four things, Riptide Society also doesn’t limit who they help, or how they help, unlike other nonprofits and government organizations.”

One day, Todd asked Peyton what her dream car would be. “She knew the answer in one second,” Todd recalls with a chuckle, “A green Subaru Outback, because she loved the Subaru commercials and she loved the vibe about love and freedom and being outdoors.” Feeling that the local Subaru dealership needed to hear this story, Todd gave them a call and soon the general manager, Chris Hudson, was on the other end of the line telling Todd how they had been praying about how to help somebody. Together, Chris and Todd were able to give Peyton the car of her dreams. But the story doesn’t end there! Chris and the Subaru team loved Peyton so much that they offered her a job. “Peyton was always so grateful for everything that has ever helped her in life,” Todd says, “But she said to me one day, as did a lot of our other recipients, ‘I wish that I had you when I was younger.’ And that stuck with me, why wait until kids are eighteen to have this family-type of support? And what could happen if we can help them at age ten like we help our own kids at age ten? It was that comment by Peyton that was a catalyst to say that we need to help kids of any age.” Around that same time, Todd had a co-worker whose daughter chose to attend a concert by the band Candlebox as her first ever live concert. When Kevin Martin, the lead singer of Candlebox, heard that this little girl had chosen them for her

first ever concert, they rolled out the red carpet. Todd, a lifelong Candlebox fan himself, took note of how Kevin and the band made a little girl’s first ever concert experience extra special by taking photos with her, signing autographs, and giving her the set list from the stage. “On my way home I said to myself this is the kind of guy that we would want to help be the voice of Riptide. Because of what he did for this little girl and he cared so much about the kids. And so the next day I was able to get in touch with Kevin and we started talking about founding this organization, Riptide Society, to help kids of all ages.” Just like a parent doesn’t only help their children with three or four things, Riptide Society also doesn’t limit who they help, or how they help, unlike other nonprofits and government organizations. Through building strategic partnerships, Riptide Society this year has already helped 30 children in Africa to be able to go to college, given away a couple of cars, and provided needed musical instruments to a group of kids in Denver so they could go to camp. Fellow co-founder Greg Lawrence and the Riptide Society staff also partner with agencies to take groups of children currently in foster care on boating and camping trips out on a lake. The lake trips give the Riptide Society staff an opportunity to earn the trust of the kids currently in foster care, and start finding out what CONTINUED >

they need. And as successful as this year has already been, Riptide Society’s two biggest events this year are still coming up. Riptide Society will be hosting their first annual gala/concert at 6pm on December 1 at Haute Spot Live in Austin and at 6pm on December 2 at Lava Cantina in The Colony, both featuring performances by platinum music artists Candlebox, Three Doors Down, and Shinedown. With a mission founded on mentorship, collaboration, and empowerment, this organization is not just offering temporary assistance, but creating a wave of hope and a pathway to lasting change.

When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries

Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.
