A Story of Grit, Smiles, and a Mother’s Legacy

For many, a smile is a simple, fleeting gesture. But for one local pediatric dentist, a smile represents a lifelong journey of resilience, a bridge between two continents, and the ultimate measure of human connection. Growing up in India within a family that deeply revered education and community service, she discovered her calling not in a textbook, but in the profound ways healthcare could transform a person’s spirit.

While science came naturally to her, she craved a path that blended medicine with artistry and personal touch. Dentistry stood out as the perfect harmony. It was a unique profession where she could directly alleviate a patient’s fear and send them back out into the world carrying a renewed sense of confidence.

This passion was rooted in a pivotal childhood moment. As a young girl, she possessed a stubborn thumb-sucking habit that defied every creative parenting trick her mother tried. In a final effort, her mother brought her to a local dentist. Instead of an intimidating ordeal, the dentist gently introduced a small habit-breaking appliance. Within days, the habit vanished. More importantly, the warm, welcoming atmosphere of that office—and the simple joy of receiving a toy after an appointment—turned a clinical visit into a core memory.

The true turning point, however, was witnessing the transformative power of that care on the person she loved most. Her own mother underwent extensive treatment at that same practice. Today, at 60 years old, her mother still flashes a brilliant, healthy smile that radiates joy. Seeing that lasting visual impact planted a permanent seed in her heart. She realized very early on that dentistry does not just fix teeth—it changes lives. It was a profound realization that set her destiny in motion.

“Balancing

”

Stepping Into the Unknown

In 2007, she made the monumental and terrifying decision to leave her home country. Moving to the United States meant stepping blindly into a foreign environment, learning to navigate entirely new academic and social systems, and adjusting to life thousands of miles away from her foundational support network.

The early years in America were a masterclass in relentless work ethic. She spent late nights studying for the GRE and GMAT while applying to healthcare graduate programs, eventually earning an MBA in Healthcare Management from the University of Findlay. To support herself, she juggled part-time employment with the grueling preparation required for the American dental board examinations. Balancing corporate graduate studies, financial survival, and the hyper-competitive dental school admissions process was an exhausting test of endurance. Yet, her focus never wavered, culminating in her acceptance into the prestigious Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Looking back, there were many moments when resources were scarce and the mountain ahead seemed too steep to climb. Whenever self-doubt crept in, she looked to the ultimate source of her motivation: her mother. Back in India, her mother was a self-made entrepreneur who built and managed a thriving clothing boutique from scratch. Watching her mother navigate the business world with grace, resilience, and unwavering independence taught her what it truly meant

to be a strong woman. That maternal legacy became the compass that guided her through the darkest, most exhausting seasons of her academic journey.

A Passion for the Little Ones

After entering the professional field, she and her husband co-owned a general dental practice. While she excelled at treating patients of all ages, she found herself consistently drawn to the pediatric chairs. Memories of her own childhood dentist reminded her of how fragile a child’s trust can be, and how a gentle hand can shape a person’s relationship with healthcare for the rest of their life.

She realized that to make the deepest impact, she needed to specialize. But choosing to enroll in a full-time pediatric dental residency was an incredibly difficult emotional and financial sacrifice. It meant temporarily stepping away from an active income and diving back into an intense training schedule—all while raising two very young children. At the start of her residency, her youngest was a mere six months old, and her oldest was just a year and a half.

The demands of motherhood combined with the clinical pressures of a specialized residency pushed her to her absolute limits. It was a beautiful, chaotic juggling act that she could not have survived alone. Supported by the unwavering partnership of her husband and the encouragement of her family, she persevered, transforming her vulnerability into her greatest strength.

Finding Beauty in the Canvas of Grief:

Opening a new business is often a matter of strict logistics, but for the owner of The Painted Fox Art Gallery, it was a masterclass in divine timing. Nestled in the heart of the historic Foxborough Common, the gallery didn’t just fill an empty retail storefront—it filled a profound, quiet void in its founder's life. After retiring early from a long career, she spent two intense, deeply dedicated years caregiving for her mother through the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease. When her mother passed away, the sudden silence left her searching for a reason to step forward.

As she shares, opening the gallery was really a matter of being in the right place at the right time. The owner of the building is deeply embedded in the arts community in Foxboro and they wanted to fill the space with a gallery. She had been floundering, in need of a new purpose for her days. When this opportunity presented itself, it was like all the pieces fell into place. Today, the gallery still provides her with purpose. It's a lot of work but truly a labor of love. The building's owner specifically wanted to breathe life into the space with a gallery, and for a woman looking for a meaningful second act, the invitation was impossible to ignore.

The journey into the art world actually began a decade earlier, sparked by an entirely different heartbreak. When her husband passed away very suddenly nearly ten years ago, she was left with an immense hole in her

life and hours of empty time that desperately needed to be filled. Though she had spent her adult life in the structured world of business administration, she had always harbored a quiet desire to paint. A year after her husband's passing, she took a leap of faith and stepped into a class led by local art instructor Rosemarie Morelli Crocker—a move that fundamentally altered her life's trajectory. She often jokes that painting saved her a lot of money on therapy, and perhaps it's not really a joke. Her instructor opened up something in her that she didn't know she had. She dived in and painted almost every day. With the fierce, unwavering encouragement of her children, she committed to her new craft. She worked closely with a mentor and attended intensive seminars to develop her technical skills. Painting became the vessel that carried her through the darkest trenches of grief, slowly expanding her world, breaking down her isolation, and guiding her toward an unexpected calling as a local business owner.

How The Painted Fox Art Gallery Reclaimed Purpose on Foxborough Common

For decades, she had used her skills behind the scenes, managing business administration and helping other people scale their enterprises. Suddenly, she found herself with the rare opportunity to combine that lifelong business acumen with a personal lifeline. Today, The Painted Fox is far more than a corporate venture; it is a community sanctuary driven by deep personal empathy. It offers a beautifully unpretentious, relaxed space designed for guests to slow down, explore, and breathe. The gallery features curated works ranging from classic realism and soft impressionism to bold, vibrant abstracts to fit every aesthetic and budget. Furthermore, the gallery is consistently staffed by local artists, offering visitors a rare opportunity to learn more about their work and uncover the intimate stories behind the art.

For those who view Foxborough strictly through the lens of a football stadium, The Painted Fox offers a beautiful correction. The historic downtown is a thriving cultural ecosystem filled with independent dining, local retail, and a vibrant arts scene. The outpouring of support from the community has been heartwarming, with residents excited to see the gallery as a key piece in the revitalization of the Foxboro Common area.

The gallery remains deeply woven into the local fabric, actively participating in the Classic Car Show, the Halloween Parade, the Light Uptown tree lighting, and Founder’s Day. By opening her doors with snacks, treats, and Kids Paint opportunities, she has turned the gallery into a multi-generational gathering place. Collaborations with the Foxboro Public Library have brought themed, curated artwork to life for special shows, participating directly in the Community Art Walk. Every day, residents walk in awed by the sheer amount of talent thriving right in their own backyard, fostering a deep sense of belonging and community pride.

This fall, the gallery’s mission of inclusion takes center stage. This September, The Painted Fox will host a very special art show and fundraising event featuring the unique works of autistic individuals, organized in partnership with Bailey’s Team for Autism. The community is warmly invited to celebrate these incredible artists at a culminating reception on September 25th.

Having walked through the deepest seasons of personal loss, the founder’s message to neighbors navigating their own hardships is both grounded and profoundly hopeful. She firmly believes that everyone has some period in their life when they are suffering from loss or hardship. In times like that, it is so important to surround yourself with the people who care about you. She encourages others to make the time to do something that quiets the mind, whether it's a hobby, an activity, or supporting a cause. She reminds the community to find the beauty around them because it is still there, to have faith in themselves, and to remember that they are stronger than they think.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD IS A FUN DESSERT FOR CHILDREN TO MAKE AND SHARE!

AROUND

CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD

There is little more satisfying to your sweet tooth than ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. Here is an easy and fun way to make this tearable, shareable treat!

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup melted butter

• 1/3 cup granulated sugar

• 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

• 3 (12 oz.) cans of buttermilk biscuits

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Generously coat the inside of a bundt pan with cooking spray or butter.

Melt the butter in a pot or bowl. Mix the sugars and cinnamon in a separate bowl.

Open one can of biscuits, separate, and cut each into four sections. Next, roll each quarter into a ball and then put each one into the sugar mixture to coat. Place the balls in the bundt pan in a single layer and drizzle a little melted butter evenly over the top. Repeat with the other two cans of biscuits.

Sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture over the top and bake for 30-35 minutes.

Be sure to let cool for a minute or two before turning the bread onto a plate and carefully removing the pan. If you leave the monkey bread in the pan much longer, it will stick and be hard to remove.

I sometimes make icing, a few tablespoons of milk, to about 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with a splash of vanilla.

Drizzle over the top while warm and enjoy!

Backyard Whimsy

Creating a Kid-Friendly Backyard Space

This adorable outdoor play space is not only easy and inexpensive to build, but it is full of charm and the perfect spot for the kids to play and lounge. The A-frame structure is easily customizable to any style and color scheme desired. Leave the wood bare, or add flare with paint or stain. An outdoor clubhouse provides a space that allows kids

to make it their own and to let their imaginations run wild spending time outdoors.

For this project, we visited our local hardware store to get all the necessary  supplies we needed. The deck is an 8 x 10 decking so  there is no need to cut down the length of any boards and pressure treated wood was used. First, dig holes

CONTINUED >

18 inches down to put the  footers, which is a 4 x 4 x 8 treated  post, and cut those into two foot lengths. Next, pour quick set concrete in the holes. Add water, and set the posts in and let it dry. We used lag screws to attach the base 2 x  10’s to the corner posts, and then 2 x 6’s  for the joists with metal hangers. Now time to put on the decking boards with exterior screws. Don’t forget to constantly check with a level.  Once the decking is  finished, now it is time for the fun!

For the A frame you need a 60-degree angle at the top of the A, and a 30-degree  angle at the bottom. You can run a 4 x 4 along the decking to attach the A frame to which adds a bit of height so adults can stand in it as well. Use heavy duty exterior screws to attach the A frame 2 x 4’s to the structure. The top of the A comes together and is held by exterior screws. For the roofing, we used 8-foot corrugated clear panels and screwed those into the A frame for a weather protecting cover. We left  three feet uncovered so a chair and some pots with herbs and flowers could be added to the entrance. Decorate with outdoor pillows, a children’s table, outdoor rug  and hanging flower pots to make it feel like a special place for kids to go. If entertaining friends, a few simple charcuterie boards are always a hit.

Elevate YOUR PB & J

TRANSFORM YOUR HUMBLE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH FROM LUNCH BOX BASIC TO GOURMET GREATNESS

Ready to give this childhood classic the upgrade it deserves? Whether you’re packing your kid’s lunch or treating yourself to something special, these elevated PB&J creations will make anyone excited for lunchtime.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE

The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor.

Quality nut butters make all the difference. Think creamy almond butter, rich cashew spread, or that perfectly salted natural peanut butter from the farmer’s market. These simple swaps instantly elevate your sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary.

Bread Options

• Artisanal sourdough

• Brioche

• Croissants

• Multigrain bread

• Cinnamon raisin bread

• Hawaiian sweet bread

• Whole wheat bread

• Thick-cut bread (for open-face)

Nut & Seed Butters

• Natural peanut butter

• Almond butter

• Dark chocolate almond butter

• Cashew butter

• Coconut butter

• Nutella

Fresh Fruits

• Fresh blueberries

• Fresh raspberries

• Fresh peaches

• Kiwi

• Raspberry preserves

• Grape jelly

• Marshmallow cream

Toppings & Add-ins

• Fresh mint leaves

• Granola

• Toasted coconut flakes

• Cream cheese

• Everything bagel seasoning

• Dark Chocolate Syrup

COMBOS TO Try:

CREATIVE COMBINATIONS THAT HIT DIFFERENT

The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread

The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices

The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thickcut bread

The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread

The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread

The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread

The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat

The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning

PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS

Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.

THE BOTTOM LINE

An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

Summer Seafood Gazpacho

A REFRESHING, CHILLED, SUMMER FORWARD SOUP THAT PACKS IN PROTEIN AND FIBER!

This summer seafood gazpacho screams summer and is the perfect, refreshing meal, snack or appetizer to beat the heat - whether you’re entertaining or enjoying a quiet meal with family. It’s packed with some of the season’s most flavorful produce and provides satisfying fiber and protein to help keep you feeling full, while still being light enough to enjoy on the hottest of summer days. Plus, there is no need to turn on the oven or the stove, keeping your kitchen (and you) cool as a cucumber! You can enjoy this chilled soup as is, or add toppings like chopped jalapeños, cilantro, or creme fraiche and scoop it up with tortilla chips!

Ingredients: (yields ~8 C gazpacho)

• 8 large tomatoes

• 1 large cucumber

• 2 cloves garlic

• 1 small sweet onion

• 1 jalapeño pepper

• ½ tsp hot sauce

• 3 Tbsp lemon juice

• 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar

• 1 ¼ tsp kosher salt

• ½ tsp ground black pepper

• 2 Tbsp parsley (fresh or dried)

• 8 oz lump crab meat

• 8 oz cooked shrimp, chilled (about 8-12 large shrimp)

*Optional suggested toppings include: cilantro, tortilla chips, chopped jalapeños, creme fraiche, or additional parsley.

Directions:

1. Cut tomatoes into large chunks, approximately 6-8 pieces each. Set aside.

2. Slice cucumber into thick slices. Set aside.

3. Mince garlic. Set aside.

4. Chop onion into medium sized pieces. Set aside.

5. Slice jalapeño pepper in half, lengthwise. Remove seeds if you prefer less heat. Chop jalapeño pepper and set aside.

6. Add tomatoes to large food processor. You may need to add about half of the tomatoes, pulse for a few seconds and then add the remaining tomatoes depending on the size of your food processor. Pulse tomatoes until chunky and slightly pureed. You will continue to puree the tomatoes once the additional ingredients are added, so do not pulse until completely smooth.

7. Add remaining vegetables (cucumber, garlic, onion, jalapeño pepper) to food processor with the tomatoes. Add hot sauce, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper and parsley. Replace the lid and pulse to desired consistency – the gazpacho should be pureed, but still somewhat chunky and not completely smooth.

8. Store in an airtight container and chill in the fridge for at least one hour before serving. If not serving right away, this gazpacho can be made in advance and stored in the fridge overnight or for a few days until ready to serve. If making this gazpacho in advance, purchase fresh seafood or thaw frozen within 1 day of serving to keep seafood fresh and store seafood separately, only adding when ready to serve. When ready to serve, chop the shrimp and add approximately 1-2 oz chopped shrimp and ~1 oz crab meat to each bowl. You can add optional toppings, such as chopped cilantro, chopped jalapeños, tortilla chips, creme fraiche and an additional sprinkle of parsley, if preferred. Enjoy!

Note: This gazpacho can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up for 4 days, without the seafood. Store seafood separately and add when ready to consume.
