Members helped achieve the expansion of Towson Manor Park by Towson Library and successfully encouraged the county to buy a 2.3-acre property the Radebaugh Florist family offered for a neighborhood park near Aigburth and Maryland Avenues. Construction on what will soon be Radebaugh Neighborhood Park will begin this summer.

The group also helped block the construction of a large gas station at the corner of York and Bosley Roads, citing research suggesting benzene from the fumes would be detrimental to the health of children attending school on the adjacent property.

Each fall, GTA organizes neighborhood tree plantings. To date, they have planted hundreds of trees.

This March and April, the GTA will sponsor its third annual spring stream cleanup, as part of Project Clean Stream of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Volunteers are needed.

While there is no formal membership, and no cost to participate, between 60 and 100 residents are actively involved at any given time.

Members meet as a group every two months.

MIKE HEALY GREW UP PLAYING GOLF AT THE COUNTRY CLUB OF MARYLAND, AND NOW HE’S RUNNING THE SHOW. “There’s never been one day that I didn’t want to come to work,” he says.

It’s a pretty remarkable statement coming from a guy who’s had the same job for nearly two decades.

But then again, when Mike goes to work, it’s a lot like going home. The PGA head professional for the Country Club of Maryland grew up on the same course he now oversees.

He wasn’t always a golfer, though. Mike played baseball and football in high school at nearby Archbishop Curley and didn’t try his luck on the links until he was a teenager.

“I asked my dad if we could play together,” he says. “Mostly though, I just wanted to be outside, drive the cart and spend some time with him.”

The impromptu excursion turned out to be a life-changer. Mike made a birdie on his second hole.

“I was hooked,” he says.

From then on, he was a fixture at the country club’s course, sometimes playing up to 54 holes a day. Back at Archbishop Curley, he started the school’s first golf team. Then, in his 20s, he held positions at courses in Timonium and Harford County. In 1999, when the club was sold from private hands back to the members, Mike was hired on as the head pro. The homecoming was sweet.

“To be able to come home to the course—and the place— that you know so well is the ultimate," he says. "There was no place else I’d rather be.”

Landing his dream job didn’t slow Mike down; for the last 19 years, he’s been an integral part of improvements made to the club and the course, including a renovated driving range and a redesign that lengthened the course by 330 yards.

“One of the things I’ve always loved about this place is that the focus is on golf,” Mike says. “There’s no pool or tennis courts; just a great course and a great restaurant. What we do here we do very, very well.”

This season, the club’s nearly 600 members are in for a real treat as the club unveils all new putting greens.

“In 93 years of play, a lot of invasive species had grown their way into the greens. There were probably 20-40 strains of grass in there. It became very hard to manage,” Mike says.

Hard to play on, too. So the team at CC of MD started over from scratch, fumigating the old stuff and laying a strain of bentgrass that’s heat-resistant and impervious to invasive species.

“The ball rolls much smoother now. It makes for a better playing experience,” he says.

Mike’s other responsibilities at the club keep him busy. He gives lessons, runs the golf shop and manages employees and a fleet of golf carts. He also plays emcee and rules official for the club’s major golfing events.

“My hats are piled high,” he says.

Mike’s many hats seem to energize him, and he’s always keen to talk about the exciting ways in which the club is evolving. But it’s the camaraderie he loves the most. His deep connection to the place has everything to do with its members, people Mike has known all his life.

“Everyone is incredibly friendly and down-to-earth,” he says. “It’s the best thing about being here—my relationship with the members.”

THE STORY OF AN ORGANIC JOB THAT HAS GROWN INTO A CAREER

With the arrival of spring comes the yearning for fresh, local produce—the desire to move away from store-bought fruits and vegetables shipped in from warmer climates that have peppered our diets all winter long. Luckily, fresh, leafy greens; juicy, ripe tomatoes; hearty root vegetables and more are available here in Baltimore County, in a way that gives residents the fresh farm-to-table items they desire while also supporting the community.

Moon Valley Farm reaps a variety of vegetables and herbs available for Towson residents as a Community Supported Agriculture farm—a model that aims to connect the producer and consumers within the food system more closely. With a variety of share options available for members, Moon Valley shareholders can pick up their part of the harvest each week at a variety of locations in the area.

Founding farmer Emma Jagoz, who is in her seventh year of farming, believes that, in addition to the boost community support can give to the local economy, the community-oriented aspect of Moon Valley Farm is exciting for community members.

“Buying local is better for the local economy since our small business not only hires locals, but also puts nearly 80 cents of every dollar back into our local economy,” she says. “Local food is beneficial for the community in several ways. It tastes better and is better for you, primarily because it is picked when it’s ripe, not weeks beforehand to be packed and shipped across the country. The shorter the distance between when a crop is picked and when it’s eaten, the more nutrient-dense it can be.”

After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in American studies, and while pregnant with her first child, 22-year-old Emma taught herself how to farm on land behind her parents’ house.

Today, the “seedling mama” frequently shares pictures of her children and the farm on Instagram, @MoonValleyFarm, and says her kids love getting their share of crops.

Already building something from nothing with her own bare hands, the new mother had to balance taking care of two children early on in her career, tending to the farm when she had spare time. From plant identification to learning new equipment, she takes pride in doing something tangible every day.

“A large part of the learning curve for me was not only figuring out the ideal growing conditions for each vegetable but learning all of those other (business) hats,” Emma says.

Emma doesn’t cut corners when it comes to her farm’s products and their health. She takes a number of steps to farm organically, not using sprays to control pests like some other farms do.

Instead, she believes in using crop rotation to prevent soil-borne diseases and using compost to increase organic matter in the soil, leading to healthier plants.

“It basically puts less synthetic chemicals into the soil and therefore into the waterways,” Emma says, noting how important it is to plan ahead. “We just can’t rely on something to come in afterward to kind of fix the problem.”

Something new the farm will be using this year is a new riding tractor that has been in the works for some time, which, Emma says, will triple the farm’s production compared to the previous pushfrom-behind tractor.

Triple the production means potentially triple the harvest for CSA members and restaurants the farm sells to in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., including Parts & Labor in Remington and MOM’s Organic Market in Timonium and White Marsh.

PARTING THOUGHTS

SMALL BATCH GARLIC & DILL PICKLES Makes 5 pint jars.

INGREDIENTS • 3–4 cucumbers • ½ red onion, sliced and cut in halves • 3 cups apple cider vinegar • 3 cups water • 4 tablespoons of sea salt • 2 teaspoons of organic cane sugar • 1 head of garlic • I bunch of fresh dill • 10 peppercorns • 1 tablespoon chili flakes • 1 tablespoon celery seeds

DIRECTIONS Slice cucumbers into wedges. Bring water and vinegar to boil; mix in sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool. Meanwhile, prep the garlic. Peel the garlic cloves and then give them a smash.

To assemble the jars, first, stack in the pickles, and save some room for the other flavors and vinegar mixture. Next, add in about four pinches of dill and two to three cloves of garlic. Add four or five halved, single slices of red onion per jar. Next, give a pinch or two of the celery seed and crushed pepper. Once the vinegar mixture has cooled, pour it into the jars making sure to cover the top of the cucumbers. Seal jars well. Refrigerate for one week. Pickles will keep four to six weeks.
