Is the earth spinning faster? The older that I get the quicker time seems to fly. It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming 2023. I can't believe we're soon going to be closing this year out! With that said, the holiday season can be hectic, and the task of shopping and giving great gifts can be daunting, not to mention decorating your home. Most of my friends love, love, love to decorate their homes for the holidays and I might say, are very good at it. Floral Legacy - Rooted in the Community THE HISTORY AND ARTISTRY OF PORTERFIELD’S

In the heart of Topeka’s vibrant Westboro neighborhood stands a beacon of artistic creativity. The story of Porterfield’s Flowers intertwines with the life journey of its owner. With the rich history of his family and a mentorship that ignited his passion, David Porterfield has blossomed into a local icon, offering Topekans the chance to experience the magic of decor and fresh flowers.

The store was inspired by the elegance of the building itself and astute observations of other retailers: from a raised ceiling inspired by a Kansas City jeweler to a sales floor inspired by images he’d seen in magazines, every element of the shop has been thoughtfully designed. The shop’s front boasts a mirrored display area with two grand iconic columns salvaged from the Ingleside Home following the 1966 tornado. The primary refrigerator was designed to store a plethora of fresh flowers and is now accompanied by another walk-in refrigerator acquired after Porterfield’s expanded into the former liquor store next door. “The store continues to evolve as our needs change and spaces change with them,” David said. While holiday decorating was once a cherished part of Porterfield’s services, David acknowledges the inevitable shift as he has aged. Physical demands have led to a reduced number of homes Porterfield’s can take on, but the legacy remains intact for now in the skilled hands of a design team led by Patrick Wages and his principal designer Linda Kennison. Throughout his journey, David has remained a dedicated member of the Topeka community. He cherishes daily encounters with familiar faces, a gift he does not take for granted. Porterfield’s journey from a family with a floral legacy to the heart of Topeka’s creative community

“My parents recognized my creativity early on,” David recalls, reflecting on the foundation of his artistic journey. Porterfield’s began with David’s father, who had pursued a career in fashion in post-WWII New York. David’s parents decided the bustling city was not the ideal place to raise a family. His father being from Georgia and mother from Eskridge, they decided Topeka was the place to put their roots. David’s father entered the world of floristry, working for Owen’s Shop in Lawrence. After tiring of the commute, he worked for Sach’s Florist in Topeka, then transitioned into sales, putting together a nest egg that would become the cornerstone for the birth of Porterfield’s in 1965, just as David was entering his junior year at Topeka West. This small flower shop would become a lifelong passion for David. “I have worked here every day since, working my way through Washburn and buying the business from my folks in the early ‘80s and moving it to Westboro,” David said. His journey into the world of holiday decorating was a turning point in his artistic career. At the age of 18, he recalls having the privilege of collaborating with the late Maxine Anton, on her colonial home on Westover Road. Maxine shared with David her wisdom and appreciation for antiques, art, and design. He fondly remembers, “I helped her every year until her death and enjoyed every minute of it.” David’s passion and skills flourished when he joined the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), a national organization that nurtures talented florists. Through AIFD, he became a recognized name in the floral community, delivering lectures nationwide and abroad. When the travel became overwhelming, David decided to focus on his business. He was in his early 50s and had a new wealth of knowledge to bring to Porterfield’s, transforming the shop into what it is today. The physical store of Porterfield’s is an embodiment of David’s creativity and attention to detail.

The Fraternal Order of Police Foundation, Inc. of Topeka/ Shawnee County was founded in 2012 after two Topeka officers, Corporal David Gogian and Police Officer Jeff Atherly, were killed in the line of duty. The nonprofit’s original mission was to raise money to help officers and their families in their times of need. In 2013, the Foundation expanded its outreach by adopting the Cops and Kids program, which takes place over the holiday season. “Cops and Kids, which was originally called Shop with a Cop, has been going on for approximately 40 years,” says Detective Heather Stults-Lindsay, a 25-year veteran of the Topeka Police Department and the president of the FOP Foundation who retired in November. “It started as a program with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.” Cops and Kids partner with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Shawnee County, and last year expanded to partner with TARC. TARC provides support for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This event gives 100 children in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program a $100 Walmart gift card to purchase family presents. “We have a huge number of officers turn up the day of the event,” she says. “They'll go shopping with the kids to pick out what they want, and help them buy gifts for family members.”

Some kids also come with their parents and Big Brother or Big Sister. Instead of buying presents just for themselves, some of the children choose to buy presents for one of their siblings, or a gift for their parents. “That's really sweet to see,” says the detective. The program not only allows children to enjoy a happier holiday season, but it also provides a positive experience with law enforcement. “A lot of times, when these kids have contact with the police, it's not always under the best circumstances,” says Detective Stults-Lindsay. “So, our goal is to help kids see officers in a different light, to see who they are behind the badge, and that they’re just regular people.” The TARC program, geared towards infants and toddlers, provides parents a $100 Target gift card for items for their children. Most of the parents, she says, use it to buy much-needed supplies such as diapers and formula. Last year, the Foundation served 50 TARC families and this year hopes to serve 100. “We really want to focus on taking care of children in our community, and we're very thankful to our community partners, Target and Walmart, for being a big part of this program and helping us to keep it going.”

Travel Tips to Keep you Sane and Happy this Holiday Season

Ahhhh, Christmas holiday season! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but possibly the busiest time to travel. With over-crowded roads, airports, bus and train stations, winging it on your travels is no longer possible. Tammy Switzer, travel advisor with Fun in the Sun Travel, joined the agency in 2018 after retiring from the military. She served 20 years full-time with the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard. This experience provided the ability to be able to work through many complex issues and short-notice requests in a coordinated and organized manner. Her family is from the Topeka area, but has called Arizona, Ohio and Texas home in the past. She has settled down in Topeka with her husband of 15 years, and her son’s family, including three grandchildren.

HERE ARE TAMMY'S TOP TRAVEL TIPS TO HELP MAKE SURE YOUR TRIP RUNS SMOOTHLY. Plan Ahead: The holiday season is a peak travel time, and prices tend to skyrocket closer to the dates. Book flights and accommodation early to secure the best deals. When traveling with children, it's important to plan ahead and be well-prepared. Research child-friendly accommodations, activities, and attractions at the destination. Be Flexible: Have flexibility with travel dates. If possible, avoid traveling on Christmas and New Year's Day. Midweek flights are often less crowded and more affordable. Remember, traveling with children can be unpredictable, remain flexible and patient if things don't go exactly as planned. Embrace the unexpected.

Pack Light: Pack only the essentials, don’t over-pack. Be sure to check airline baggage restrictions and try to stick to carry-on luggage to avoid long waits at baggage claim. Always bring a first aid kit and any necessary medications in your carry-on. Stay Organized: Create a checklist to make sure you don't forget anything important. Packing cubes can help keep belongings organized, and a travel wallet can keep documents easily accessible. Stay Connected: Download essential travel apps, such as airline apps for mobile boarding passes and hotel booking apps for easy check-ins. Arrive Early: Arrive at the airport or train station well in advance. During the holiday season, security lines tend to be longer, and unexpected delays can happen. Traveling with children often takes longer than expected, allowing extra time for getting through security, boarding, and other travel-related tasks. Aiming for a stress-free journey is key. Boarding Plane: Don’t be in a hurry to board with the children. If possible, have one traveling adult board with bags and get settled. Keep children entertained in the gate area and board close to last if not last. This will help eliminate being restless while everyone else boards. Be Comfortable: Make sure to dress in comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the weather and travel activities. It's also a good idea to bring a small blanket or a favorite stuffed animal for added comfort for children. Plan for Rest Stops: If traveling by car, plan for frequent rest stops to allow children to stretch their legs, use the

restroom, and burn off some energy. This can make the journey more pleasant for everyone. Snacks and Drinks: Bring along a variety of childfriendly snacks and drinks to keep hunger and thirst at bay. Opt for healthier options like fruit, granola bars, and water. It's wise to avoid sugary snacks that might lead to excessive energy levels. Entertainment: Keeping children entertained during the journey is crucial, bring books, coloring supplies, tablets with kid-friendly apps, or even portable DVD players with their favorite movies. This will help keep them engaged and minimize boredom. Consider Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. 3 cups sparkling water 1 cup fresh grapefruit juice 1/3 cup thyme syrup Ice

DIRECTIONS: Rim glass with sugar. Fill glass with ice. Add 3 tablespoons thyme syrup to each glass and fill up with 1/2 cup grapefruit juice and approximately 1 cup sparkling water. Garnish and enjoy.

INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup cane sugar • 1 cup water • 1/3 cup fresh thyme

DIRECTIONS: Combine water and sugar to a pot. Bring to a boil and then simmer for a few minutes. Remove from the heat and add fresh thyme and steep.
