SUMMER AND ADVENTURE ISSUE Enjoy life's simple pleasures Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and also to find ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers are often not those filled with constant activities and trips, but those that embrace a slower pace and allow moments to simply enjoy the people and places around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” aren’t always something we can attain with our action-packed schedules, it is worth the effort to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures. Those are the things that remind us of our own childhood. Some of the best memories can be made at backyard barbecues with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. I have always said my three favorite things are one - hot air balloons (going up in one is on my bucket list, but not my husband's LOL), two - fireworks, and three - the moon. I love sitting around the firepit at night, sipping a cocktail and looking at the lovely moon surrounded by an ocean of stars. It makes you stop and ponder the beauty of God's creation. As we celebrate this 4th of July with fireworks, let’s also take a moment to honor and thank our veterans. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Topeka City Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving, and all of their loved ones for their service and sacrifice. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our Golden City offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that will last a lifetime.

Schendel Lawn & Landscape, in business since 2011, has the experience to create a gathering place where family and friends will want to spend time relaxing and socializing. “People are asking for patios, fire pits, and even pool designs,” says co-owner Aaron Jones. “They’re looking for enhancements to their current landscapes, including adding trees and plantings.” Lighting is also in high demand. It adds ambience and character while increasing functionality by allowing homeowners to stay out well after sundown. Water features are also a big hit. “Bubbling water is a great sound, and we provide many options,” he says. “For example, we can drill

a hole in basically any rock and pipe water through that hole.” In addition to the aesthetic enjoyment, the sound of water is peaceful and calming and he says one of its biggest selling points. There are also many design options when it comes to fire features. “There's a growing interest in the crushed glass medium where it looks like the glass is actually glowing off the fire,” says Aaron. Others prefer the look and smell of burning wood in a traditional fire pit. By also providing full-service maintenance for residential customers, it allows homeowners to spend less time seeding, pulling weeds, fertilizing, and mowing and more time doing what they love, while also enjoying a beautiful outdoor oasis. Maintenance and design services are also performed for commercial businesses in order to provide professional and inviting landscapes for both

employees and customers. Mulching, planting and pruning are also part of the package. Schendel Lawn & Landscape provides drainage solutions as well. One family had water pooling in their yard, which made it difficult to use. Retaining walls were built to direct water away from the backyard, and at the same time, provided seating around their fire pit. Many of his employees have been with him for over 10 years. “We've got a fantastic team and we instill in all our folks to treat people as they want to be treated, and to treat all projects with care and professionalism. Unlike most kids, Jared Fox always liked going to the dentist, so when he grew up, he pursued dentistry as a career. “I really liked science, biology and chemistry, so it seemed like a really good fit,” he says. “I also always liked repairing things, and that's pretty much what dentistry is all about.” In 2014, three years after graduating from dental school, Dr. Fox opened his own practice. Its waiting room is artistic and colorful, and each patient chair faces large windows overlooking beautiful Shunga Park. “It's kind of like you're in a tree house,” says Dr. Fox. The family practice offers comprehensive care, which includes everything from cleanings and Invisalign to cosmetic dentistry and in-office whitening. Along with Dr. Fox, his team does a great job of ensuring that patients receive the most up-to-date technology and have a caring and comfortable experience. “One thing that really sets us apart is our digital numbing,” he says. “I don't use a traditional syringe, but an electronic syringe. When he isn’t busy with his practice, he loves spending time with his partner, Emily, and his sons, Adam, who will be going into Topeka West High School this fall, and Asher, who will be going into the 5th grade. “We go camping every fall,” says Dr. Fox. “We've gone to Nebraska, Oklahoma, and we’re going to Missouri soon.” They also enjoy doing things in Topeka too, such as going to the Topeka Zoo, hiking local trails and walking their three dogs around the neighborhood. “Adam and I like to rollerblade and Shunga Trail is a great path for that,” he says. “Asher and I do Cub Scouts together. I was

I was the den leader this past year, but this coming year I'm going to be the pack leader for his troop.” The foursome also love bicycling, kayaking, and fishing. “We really just get out and about as much as we can,” says Dr. Fox. “There's always something going on in Topeka. There are lots of great events that we can attend, whether it's going up to NOTO or downtown. This is a story about a family, a business, and a community. It is a story of heartache and heroism, shattering and sharing, receiving and reciprocating. It is the story of how, in the face of tragedy, a community came together to support a family and, in return, that family has made helping the community their business. Let’s start at the beginning. Chris Cazier owns Modern Masonry, LLC in Topeka. They specialize in masonry repair and maintenance, custom, pre-built mailboxes and outdoor entertainment areas (think retaining walls, patios, fire pits and outdoor kitchens). After he graduated from Shawnee Heights High School, he went to work for his buddy’s dad who owned a masonry company. “Yeah, I was like, ‘I guess I’ll do that until I figure out what I want to do,’” he said, laughing. “I ran work for other people for a few years, and in 2013, I decided to start my own company, and here we are.” Meanwhile, Chris met his wife, Jaclyn Schreiner, an ICU nurse, in 2009. She, too, is a Topeka native who graduated from Seaman High School. And yes, she is related to the Schreiners in the concrete industry. The two were introduced by Jaclyn’s cousin and a whirlwind romance ensued. “Everything went really fast with us,” Jaclyn said. “We had seven dates in a row, got engaged six months later and married a year after that.” Because both spouses come from close-knit families, (both sets of parents live nearby and Chris works with his twin brother) creating a family of their own was an easy decision. By 2014, they were raising twin boys Carson and Mason, a daughter, Kendall, and just before Christmas of 2014, they welcomed a son, Blake. Life was pretty sweet. Then, the day after Christmas and three days after his first birthday, Blake was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Their lives were turned upside down. “I would be at the hospital for a month with him getting chemo, home for a week, and then back at the hospital,” Jaclyn said. Thankfully, the cancer went into remission. Blake relapsed in March, but was finally able to go home that summer. “In early summer of 2016 Blake got to spend time at home with his family. “He loved being outside, riding in the golf cart, splashing in the water, looking for cows. He loved cows,” his mom shared. “It was the best summer of our lives. He finally got to be a little boy.” Unfortunately, he relapsed again on July 4th and was sent to Children’s Mercy. This time, he needed a bone marrow transplant. Thanks to selfless donors from the community, he received the transplant in September and spent another

100 days in the hospital. After that, they moved to the Ronald McDonald house. Mercifully, he and Jaclyn were able to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas at home surrounded by family. He celebrated his second birthday on Dec. 23rd, cancer-free. But it was to be a short-lived victory. Once more, the relentless cancer returned. Little Blake was flown to Cincinnati to take part in a trial program with new medication. Sadly, the treatment was unsuccessful and Blake passed away on March 7, 2017. Devastated, Chris and Jaclyn said goodbye to their sweet baby boy. They slowly began to heal. Chris turned to what he knows best - construction and masonry. He threw himself into remodeling their home. He started with the basement after Blake died. Soon, they were adding a back patio, firepit and outdoor fireplace. Then they added a tennis/basketball court and built a pool and pool house. “We built the pool house in the winter,” Chris said. “We just tented it in and my dad came over to help me finish it.” They have since added an area above the garage and also extended the house on the opposite end. Their home has become their refuge from the world. “After everything that happened with Blake, we realized how precious family time is,” said Jaclyn. “Just to be able to sit

at the table and enjoy meal time together.” Fast forward to today and the Cazier’s are going strong. They have expanded their family by two - daughter Lauren is 3 (“Six if you ask her,” Jaclyn said.) and Luke who is 10 months. With so many kids, it only made sense to build them a place where they can run and play outside, so just down the hill from the house, nestled in the trees, is a recreation area. This outdoor adventure camp features everything a kid could dream of, including a swing set, a three-story treehouse above a shady sandbox, swinging hammocks, a zip line, bonfire area, picnic tables, a snack shack, and lots of things to climb on. “We’ve created this little oasis to enjoy with family and friends,” said Jaclyn. Jaclyn said they are forever grateful to the Topeka community for their help and support during their time of need. “The community just came in and surrounded us. They had fundraiser after fundraiser - golf tournaments, chili suppers…we really felt the love and support and it meant so much to us,” she shared. “It allowed us to spend time with the kids and not worry so much about medical bills and reality. We know firsthand how important that is, so we wanted to give back.” And give back, they have. They created a non-profit foundation to honor Blake’s memory. It’s called Team Blake, and its

mission is to help other children in NE Kansas facing cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. “We understand what they are going through,” Chris said. “It’s a lot!” From medical expenses to household bills, the Team Blake Foundation helps families trying to survive the unimaginable. They send care packages to sick kids, provide spiritual and emotional support, donate to other charities like the Ronald McDonald House and pediatric cancer research. “We’ve been able to donate $109,000 so far,” Jaclyn said. “It’s where our heart is and since we can give back, that’s what we want to do.” Team Blake will hold its 7th Annual Team Blake Memorial Golf Tournament on September 11th at GreatLIFE Golf. The overwhelming grief and emotional toll of losing a child, especially at such a young age, can tear some couples apart, but in this instance, with the help of a supportive family and a caring community, they have managed to not only survive, but thrive. It’s no surprise, with Chris coming from a masonry background and Jaclyn from a concrete background, that the family they built is rock solid.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb…succulents are forgiving.

In case you haven’t heard, succulents are all the rage right now, so why not create a mini succulent garden? I know what you’re thinking…“I’m not good with plants,” or “I can’t even remember my Wi-Fi password, much less remember to water my plants!” But even if you are new to gardening or have a hectic lifestyle, a mini succulent garden is the perfect place to start. Why? Because succulents require minimum care and a mini garden doesn’t require much work to create. Many people find succulent gardens to be stress relievers. So how do you get started? Luckily, it’s fast, easy, and inexpensive to start a mini succulent garden. You’ll need only three things - a pot, soil, and a few plants. For small succulents, the pots should be at least four inches deep and have a drainage hole so water can pass through. Succulents do not like wet roots. The soil is easy too. Any cactus mix potting soil will do. You can find it at nurseries or garden centers. Then, simply choose your favorite plants. Due to their popularity, you should be able to find them everywhere from garden stores to home improvement stores to grocery stores. Have fun choosing your plants! There are so many varieties, you may have a hard time deciding. Succulents come in all kinds of shapes and colors - pointy, round, flowering, striped, spotted, pink, blue, gray, green. Don’t be intimidated. The best way to learn what works and what doesn’t is to experiment. Some fun ones to start with include burro’s tail, baby toes, spiral aloe, crown of thorns, zebra plant, and hen and chicks. Vary plant colors and textures to create visual interest. Follow a geometric design or create an enchanting fairy garden.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Fill the pot halfway with the soil. 2. Play with the arrangement before planting. 3. Place the plants, fill in around them with soil, and pack snugly. 4. Water thoroughly twice a month. 5. Decorate the top with rocks, colored glass, moss, or whatever strikes your fancy.

Summer Ente rta ining Summertime…it’s the perfect time to gather with family and friends in the backyard. Whether it’s a patio, deck, or pool party, the main ingredients are still food, fun, and refreshments. With that in mind, here are a few mouth-watering recipes to try at your next summer shindig. With outdoor entertaining, we hope for beautiful, sunny skies, but it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case Mother Nature decides to “water” that day. Your garage is a great space and available in an instant simply by moving a couple of vehicles. Another thing to keep in mind is heat. If your space has no shade, you may want to plan an evening event or make good use of umbrellas and pop-up tents. And don’t forget music and games! But I digress. Back to the food and drink!

REFRESHING RECIPES TO BEAT THE HEAT

STEAK WITH CHIMICHURRI SAUCE YIELD: Makes about 1 cup INGREDIENTS • 1 cup (packed) fresh Italian parsley • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup (packed) fresh cilantro (optional) • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 3/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt • Steak - 1 ½-2 pounds flank steak, or steak of choice. DIRECTIONS 1. Make sauce: Puree all ingredients in processor. Transfer to bowl. (Can be made 2 hours ahead. Cover and let stand at room temperature.) 2. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Sear steak for 6-8 minutes on each side until heavily browned on the outside and slightly pink in the middle.Thinly slice steak across the grain and top with Chimichurri sauce.

TOMATO PE ACH BURR ATA S AL AD YIELD: Serves 6

INGREDIENTS • Freshly ground black pepper • A few big pinches of Kosher salt • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or 2 teaspoons fresh oregano • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 large heirloom tomatoes or large plum tomatoes, or cherry tomatoes. (about 2 1/2 pounds total) • Two peaches • 8 ounces mozzarella pearls or small balls • 4 ounces burrata cheese • 1/4 cup torn fresh basil leaves plus additional whole leaves for garnish

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine salt with olive oil. 2. Place the burrata cheese round on a platter. Arrange the tomatoes, peaches and mozzarella balls around cheese. 3. Drizzle with dressing from bowl. Sprinkle with more salt and pepper. Garnish with additional basil leaves and serve.
