LIFESTYLE LETTER
EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
GENT’S ISSUE Inspiration is a Powerful Force An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of mentoring and shaping the young people in his life in a multitude of ways. Whether he is a father, a coach, an uncle, or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life who has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Perhaps it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who saw the best in us. Maybe it’s someone we look up to for guidance, or even someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by his greatness. These men have made a big difference in all of the lives they’ve touched. Their words and actions create a ripple effect that will be felt for generations. Inspiration is a powerful force. “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” Robert Kennedy In this month’s issue, the Gent’s Issue, we are highlighting men who put themselves second, men who work hard, and men who do the right thing not because someone is watching, but because it’s the right thing to do. The lasting impact that they are making and the ripple effect it creates are woven into the fabric of this community like shiny threads that reflect the light and make our Golden City gleam. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. I will leave you with some homework. In this month of June, when we celebrate Father’s Day, take the time to seek out someone who has inspired you and tell him how much you appreciate him!

Topeka’s Got Talent ARTICLE BY LINDA DITCH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN KAUK
Filmmaker Gary Piland touts the city as a haven for artists of all types
18
B ACK STAGE | EN TERTA INME NT
So, you dream of making movies. Most aspiring filmmakers, actors, and musicians would journey to Los Angeles or New York. Some would start in places such as Seattle, Portland, Austin, or Nashville. But what about Topeka? Gary Piland is the president and CEO of Roaring Rat Films. As an all-in-one writer/director/ producer, he made six movies in Topeka featuring talent from the area. This includes his latest current film, “Blackstone: Hand of God,” which is gaining viewers on Amazon. “Topeka is an arts town,” says Piland. “You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting an actor, musician, or writer. There are amazing people here doing amazing things who have chosen this for their home. Per capita, this town blows all those cities away. If you were able to count the number of people involved in the arts as a per capita percentage, I know we would blow them all away.” Piland feels The Golden City attracts talent for many reasons. First, the Topeka Civic Theater (TCT) is the oldest dinner theater west of the Mississippi River. Also, the University of Kansas is a top art school just down the road, and the band Kansas attracts musicians from all over seeking their shot at fame. That’s what initially brought Piland to Topeka in the mid-1970s. He was a drummer and a wannabe rock-n’-roller. All the good bands came out of Topeka at the time, so he and a friend decided to be there, too. They formed the band Limousine and spent the next eight years on the road playing more than 800 gigs.
While the band did well, they were what Piland calls “almost famous.” The group never got a contract with a record company, partly because they were a hard rock band when punk rock and dance music topped the charts. After leaving Limousine, Piland worked at various jobs before landing one in IT for a large advertising company. Fourteen years later, his wife, Martha, encouraged him to leave the company and start his own website development company. In 2003, he opened Umbrella. And Piland had a new artistic dream—creating films. “I’d always wanted to make movies, but it wasn’t possible because you had to have a lot of money,” he explains. “But with Mac computers and Final Cut Pro, with all the prices coming down and capabilities going up, in 2010, I decided I wanted to start making movies.” Piland has a movie concept he hopes to produce in the future, but when starting out, he didn’t want to film his dream project before learning the necessary skills. He says, “I thought, ‘What’s kind of fun and weird? Let’s make zombie movies.’” The first was “Zombie Laundry.” Piland gathered up some friends and shot the film at a Brookwood Shopping Center laundromat after closing time. There was no script. They just made it up as they went along. Next came “Zombie Chigger” and “Zombie Tattoo Parlor.” This time he got accomplished local actors to participate, mainly through Topeka Civic Theater (TCT). These early films are available to watch for free on roaringratfilms.com.

“TCT has huge talent,” Piland says. “If you take their top-tier actors, they could walk on any set in the world today and be in that movie. They really are that good. They have lives. They have other jobs. But if given a chance, they could do that.” “TCT has huge talent,” Piland says. “If you take their top-tier actors, they could walk on any set in the world today and be in that movie. They really are that good. They have lives. They have other jobs. But if given a chance, they could do that.” The following two films, “Zombie Beauty Pageant” and “Zombie, Kansas,” are part of a trilogy that, along with “Blackstone,” explains Piland’s concept of zombies being created from a virus, not rising from the dead. The movies present a world where humans and zombies live together. Plus, viewers are introduced to local actor Dusty Nichols in the role of Reverend J. Mortimer Blackstone, a fire-and-brimstone preacher who believes

God didn’t call him to save the world. He was called to end it. “Blackstone” took three years to make. All of the actors worked for free for an opportunity to gain skills working on film versus the stage. Plus, they now have a piece of work where they can reference their talent. Piland says, “Showcasing their talent is a big chunk of why I do what I do. I tell them, ‘Your gift to me is your talent and time. Putting up with me. My gift to you is I’m going to give you something that in 30 years when I’m long gone, you can still put this movie on and see yourself at whatever age. You’ll have that forever.’”
FIRST TEE TOPEKA HELPS KIDS BUILD INNER STRENGTH BEFORE THE WORLD DEMANDS IT

Not Just About Golf MARCUS MILLER OF FIRST TEE TOPEKA Growing up, Marcus Miller heard golf was not the game for him. It was for rich white men. Not for people who looked like him. He even teased his high school buddy, Gary Woodland, about golf being what you play when you can’t play other sports. In truth, Miller was trying to get his friend to play those other sports with him. Both friends went to Washburn University, where Miller played football. Of course, what happened to Woodland is now golfing history. Still, golf wasn’t done with Miller yet. He worked at Topeka Country Club, where employees could play the course on Mondays. Miller remembers, “It’s a hard course, and I wasn’t very good. What it taught me was patience. I’m a way better man today, a better father and husband, because of the game of golf. It’s taught me always to understand the big picture and not make mountains out of molehills.” Miller went on to work for the Boys and Girls Club and the Shawnee County District Attorney’s office. He also coached youth basketball. In April 2021, he accepted the executive director position at First Tee Topeka. Backed by The PGA of America, First Tee is a youth development program that uses golf to teach life skills and character development, with the space to be themselves. The focus is on these key elements; Character Development, Adult Mentors, Personal Growth, and College Scholarships.
Miller explains, “We believe every kid deserves the chance to build inner strength before the world demands it. To find the joy with feeling confident in their own skin and access experiences and spaces where personal growth happens. We enable kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. Yes, we want to introduce the game of golf to them, but it’s the life skills and the mentoring that’s more important to us.” The Board of Directors and staff for the Topeka chapter of First Tee had an initial goal of reaching 75 kids in 2022, from ages 7-to 18. In the spring, 33 kids participated, which Miller feels is a good sign for the future. He also notes anyone interested in being a coach or mentor doesn’t need to be skilled at golf. It’s more about kids having fun and teaching them how to conduct themselves, talk to people, and face obstacles. Miller admits, “I wouldn’t even consider myself a golfer. I’m, at best, a bogey player. Most likely a double-bogey player every single hole. When you’re talking to 7, 8, and 9-year-olds, it’s not important to get too technical about it.” What does his work at First Tee give to Miller? He says, “When my time is over on this earth, I want my wife and kids to hear from others what I meant to them, in the sense of their development and how I may have

helped them when times were tough. I want my kids to know if you want to affect the community, you have to care more about them than yourself. I want them to know that their father cared. Not just loved them, but loved all children and all families to help develop their children in a way that they can be proud of.”

Honoring a Legacy GIVING BACK ONE CAR WASH AT A TIME

In 1973, Charlie Walker founded his first vehicle cleaning company. In 1981, he added his first automated car wash, and to this day, his children and grandchildren carry on the tradition of excellence and giving back to the community. “We are doing our best to continue growing the company, taking care of the people who work here as well as those who live in the community,” says Guy Walker, Charlie’s grandson and president of Charlie’s Car Wash. “My grandfather was very passionate about people and that definitely has carried through.” With full-service car wash locations in Kansas, including one right here in Topeka, and in Missouri and Oklahoma, Charlie’s helps each community in which they’re located. Its philanthropic impact can be felt locally with the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, which was named after Charlie’s daughter who passed away at the age of 11, the Rolling Hills Zoo, and the Kansas Food Bank. The company is also very proud of its Excellence in Education program, which provides funding to schools and school programs.
Its impact is felt around the world as well. Recently, the company started giving to World Central Kitchen, which helps feed displaced Ukrainian families. It’s also been instrumental in helping those affected by tornados and hurricanes in the Unites States and other countries. Of course, none of this would be possible without its customers, and Charlie’s belief in treating those customers right so they keep coming back. “Because we’re not franchised and we own all of our locations, we focus on keeping them in like-new condition,” he says. “We reinvest to keep our equipment up to date and well maintained so customers will always get a high quality wash.” Before a car even enters the car wash, it receives special attention. “Our employees prep the car before it goes through the automated tunnel to wash off bugs and hit the problem areas,” says Guy. “Once it goes through the tunnel, we then direct customers who want inside cleaning to another lane.” Here, the car is vacuumed, windows are cleaned and everything else is wiped down. This way, those who don’t want this service are free to leave CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / TO P E KA

and don’t have to wait behind the cars getting this additional service. High-level customer service is also one of its hallmarks. “Our customers often comment that one of the reasons they continue to come back is because of our employees,” he says. “We have a team of employees who are dedicated to checking quality and ensuring that our customers get what they pay for.” If a customer is not completely satisfied with some aspect, they will make it right before the customer drives away. Charlie’s Car Wash also offers different car wash programs. “We offer four exterior washes and the two top washes offer a clean-car guarantee,” says Guy. “One is the Ultimate, which offers a two-day clean car guarantee and the other is the Signature, which offers a five-day clean car guarantee, where you can come back and get a wash any time in those days with no questions asked. We also have the Unlimited program, where you pay a monthly fee and you can wash as often as you like.” Unlimited customers also gain access to Charlie’s QwikPass lane, so there’s no waiting in line. With QwikPass, fees are automatically charged to a credit card on file. For more information about Charlie’s Car Wash, go to charlies.com.

WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HEARING, LISTEN TO A PROFESSIONAL ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTOL KUMAR

“About eleven years ago, a professor from Johns Hopkins found that if the brain isn’t getting fed sounds, you’re starving it, and people can see a 30% to 40% faster decline in mental function and are more likely to develop dementia”
When Rick Ediger married into a family of hearing aid specialists, he had no intention of joining the business. However, once he learned how much hearing aids could improve someone’s quality of life, he found his calling. In 1982, Rick received his license as a hearing instrument specialist, and shortly after, along with his wife Debra, opened Ediger Hearing Aid Service in Topeka. The business offers personalized hearing aid fittings, hearing aid repairs for most major brands, custom earmold impressions, hearing aid batteries, assistive listening devices such as TV Ears, consultations and more. “Service is key, and we always let our patients know we are here for them from fitting to service,” says Rick. He also offers free hearing tests. “I think everyone should have a hearing test because it’s just like getting a physical or having your eyes checked.” During an exam, he uses a video otoscope to look inside the ears to make sure the eardrums are healthy. “If I see an abundance of wax, it needs to be removed, or God forbid, I see a tumor or a cyst,” says Rick. “That’s when we need to send them to a medical doctor right away.” Now, it’s more important than ever to get our ears checked. “About eleven years ago, a professor from Johns Hopkins found that if the brain isn’t getting fed sounds, you’re starving it, and people can see a 30% to 40% faster decline in mental function and are more
likely to develop dementia,” he says. Hearing also affects your balance, which can be dangerous, especially for older people. Of course, hearing aids have come a long way since he started. “We still have behind the ear hearing aids, but they’re so much smaller and more comfortable,” says Rick. “Others go deep into the canal and can barely be seen. Many are now rechargeable and that’s a big deal because people can spend $80 to $100 a year on batteries.” Some hearing aids actually have Bluetooth technology and can be adjusted through a Smartphone, which is very convenient. It’s critical to go to a specialist when it comes to hearing aids. “No two ears are alike and everybody needs something a little different. Even after 40 years of fitting hearing aids, I still get excited about the new technologies they are inventing, and they are still working to perfect hearing aids to be even better!” Being in business for so many years means he’s watched many of his patients age gracefully. “We are blessed to have patients that are loyal to us,” he says. “Some are third-generation families that have worn and are still wearing our hearing aids.” The business is also part of the nationwide Audibel Network, which aims to provide the greatest hearing care experience possible by abiding to high standards in everything they do. Guys, Grills, and Some
GO-T O SUMMERT IME RECIP ES
FROM JAMAICAN TO BACON…MEALS YOU’LL WANNA BE MAKIN’!
If you’re looking for some sure-fire summer grilling ideas, look no further than your neighbor’s backyard. We tapped a couple of your fellow Topekans for their favorite grub on the grill and came up with these tantalizing taste bud teasers. First, we visited with Les Brack who has been barbecuing for as long as he can remember. He’s tried everything from Big Green Eggs to charcoal grills and finds that each one has unique characteristics. His most recent choice was a Smokin Brothers pellet grill he found at Patio, Pool & Fireside in Topeka last fall. “I’ve bought several grills there over the years and Jeff (owner) and Cathi have never steered me wrong,” Brack said. “They recommended this one, and I’ve been very happy with it so far.” Because he grills year round, Brack said he has already had the opportunity to try a number of different recipes on the new grill from chicken to pork to some crappie he caught himself. He added that his son and daughter-in-law raise cattle, so beef makes regular appearances on the menu. Brack shared one of his favorite beef recipes with us Brack’s Bacon Burgers. “With these burgers, you can use lean hamburger because the bacon adds the fat and keeps the burger from getting dry and the sauce holds it all together,” he said. “It’s one of our go-to meals all summer long. We pair it with organic carrots. Just rub them with olive oil and a little kosher salt and grill them up.” “Grilling adds amazing flavor to everything,” Brack shared. “Vegetables are delicious grilled.” From carrots to asparagus to red peppers, nothing is off limits when it comes to summer grilling. And if you’re looking for a sweet treat, look into grilled fruit like peaches, pears, and bananas. “The fun is in trying new things. So don’t be afraid,” Brack added. “Just throw it on there and see what happens!”

BRACK’S BACON BURGERS difficulty level: medium
INGREDIENTS • 1 lb. hamburger • 1/3 cup peppers • 1 tsp. Everything Rub (Seattle Rhythm & Spice) • 1 tbsp. Bear-B-Cue Sauce (Walton) • Bacon
DIRECTIONS Add diced peppers, seasoning, and sauce to hamburger. Patty burgers out. Wrap with bacon and secure with toothpicks. Tip: Press bacon strips between two pieces of wax paper and roll with a rolling pin to flatten. Set grill temperature to 350-400 degrees. Place burgers on the grill and flip when bacon starts to crisp on the bottom. Cook until bacon on the opposite side looks golden or an internal temperature probe reads 135-140 degrees (depending on how you like your burgers). Remove and let rest for 5-10 minutes.

Topekan Roger Byler has been grilling for over 40 years. His grill of choice is the Big Green Egg. “I prefer to use charcoal over gas or pellets,” he said. “There’s something about that flavor lump charcoal brings to cooking.” He likes to use oak hardwoods when smoking meats to add a bit of Texas style flavor and fruitwoods for pork or fish. Byler said the thing he likes the most about the Big Green Egg is the versatility. “These grills are extremely flexible in what they can cook. I’ve smoked meat and fish. I’ve made a rotisserie turkey and a prime rib roast,” he said. “And I have a carbon steel flat top attachment I use for smash burgers and veggies like sweet potatoes. It’s even great for baking pizza.” Byler shared what he called “one of his standby easy meals” with us - Jamaican Jerk Chicken Thighs (opposite page). Not surprisingly, Byler is also a fan of gilling vegetables. He suggests pairing the chicken with corn on the cob. “Leave it in the husk, peel it back a little to remove the silk, then soak it in water for 20-30 minutes,” he explained. “Place it on the edge of the grill for about 30-40 minutes. It steams in the husk and it’s delicious.” Byler purchased his Big Green Egg from Patio Pool and Fireside over 20 years ago and it’s still going strong. “They never wear out,” he shared. “They’re not inexpensive, but people will find out that they last forever, so they’re worth the investment,” he explained. “Plus, you can cook so many different ways - grilling, rotisserie, flat top - you really get your money’s worth there too.” So there you have it - two guys, two grills, and some great recipes to try tonight. No matter what you grill, get outside and enjoy this great weather and say hello to the neighbors while you’re at it. Ahh, summertime in Topeka, ya gotta love it!

BYLER’S JAMAICAN JERK CHICKEN THIGHS difficulty level: medium
INGREDIENTS • Chicken thighs (Byler prefers Smart Chicken) • Dwyer’s Jamaican Jerk Seasoning (Dwyer’s is a Topeka company)
DIRECTIONS Pat chicken thighs dry and spray lightly with olive oil. Season with Dwyer’s Jamaican Jerk seasoning (go heavy or light depending on how spicy you like it). Bring the grill up to around 350 degrees for direct cooking. Tip: Byler seasons the hot grill with a piece of raw bacon which helps to keep the meat from sticking. Place the thighs on the grill and cook for 20-25 minutes until browned. Flip and continue cooking for another 15-20 minutes till the other side is browned. Use a meat thermometer and remove when the internal temperature reaches a minimum temperature of 165 degrees.

Rum - it’s hard not to think of spiced rums, pirates, and sweet tropical drinks, but in the last decade, rum has showcased its ability to compete with the best spirits in the world - scotch, bourbon…the list goes on. Leading that charge is the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados - owned and operated by Richard Seale, the fourth generation of the family. Their rums have earned recognition as “the PAPPY of rum” (Fred Minnick) and “some of the very best things money can buy” (Forbes). Their rums have won multiple awards among all spirits and producers in two of the oldest and largest global competitions: 6-time winner ISC (International Spirits Challenge) and 4-time winner IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition). Foursquare has been awarded Rum Producer of the Year and notably “Outstanding Spirits Producer” (IWSC 2021) and “Supreme Champion Spirit” (ISC 2021). So, how has this happened? It’s all due to their philosophy on rum making - no flavor additives, no sweeteners, no filtration, unique barrel aging - the same as the very best whiskey producers, but letting rum be rum. These rums have transformed the perception of rum, and have been embraced by the whiskey lovers of the world. So the next time you wander your local store, keep an eye open for Foursquare and their game-changing rums. Brandon is Director of Education with Altamar Brands, importer of a selection of Foursquare Rums. See more cocktail recipes on his Instagram page @brandon.altamar.
