LADIES ISSUE Celebrating the women in our lives.
STAFF WR ITER
Spring is the time of new beginnings. Days grow longer, grass gets greener, trees and flowers bloom, and the whole world seems to burst with new life. May is also the month we celebrate our mothers. It seems fitting because mothers are the people who bring new lives into this world. These things got me thinking about my own mother and how thankful I am not only that she is my mother but that I am still able to celebrate this special day with her. It’s something that I’ve always taken for granted until last year. Last year, my Mom, Karla, was diagnosed with cancer. It happened suddenly and required immediate surgery. The surgery was extensive and the entire family rallied around her and prayed very hard. That’s when I learned that my mom truly is a fighter. I attribute it to her Irish roots. I saw her strength and sheer determination as she battled back. I have a whole new appreciation and overwhelming admiration for her amazing combination of grit and grace. Today, she is fully recovered and her doctors tell us that she is 100% cancer free. This Mother’s Day will be extra special and I am so thankful that we can celebrate it with her. I love you, Mom! Thanks for being a fighter. In this month in our Ladies issue, we celebrate some of the Golden City’s amazing women. (Don’t worry, guys. You’ll get your time in the spotlight next month.) It takes a wide variety of people from all walks of life to create a vibrant city like Topeka. Are we perfect? No. We are all just ordinary people on an extraordinary journey and I believe most of us simply want to leave this world a better place than we found it. So go out and do your part to make the world better. Celebrate spring, celebrate life, and don’t ever take your loved ones for granted.

DRIZZLING YO U W ITH
SELF - CONFIDENCE AT SAFELY SUNNING, BODY POSITIVITY IS AS ESSENTIAL AS THE TAN

“People can be themselves here. It’s really important that all of my clients feel good when they leave here.”
When clients enter Safely Sunning on South Kansas Avenue, they see a House Rules sign that reads: “No self-depreciation allowed. You may not apologize for being naked, body fat, skin folds, cellulite, wrinkles, stretch marks, unpolished nails, ugly feet, big boobs, small boobs, one boob, no boobs, scars, body hair, veins, or the proper functions of being a woman... Remember that you are something amazing.” Owner Heather Souther knows the confidence a tan can give a person. For almost seventeen years, she has offered professional airbrush tans to everyone from teenagers to seniors, both women and men. Some come to see her for a special event, such as a cheer competition, prom, or wedding. Others just want to look good for a vacation or the first time they wear a swimsuit in summer. However, Souther also understands why they may feel nervous when they arrive. Thus, the reason for the sign. “People feel super vulnerable when they come in,” she explains. “Sometimes they’ve never had spray tans before, or they’re just going through life and have body changes. When they come in and remove all or part of their clothing and stand here in front of these lights, it shows everything. So, I created that sign so you can’t apologize for anything. All the insecurities go right out the window. I want everyone to feel welcome, invited, and good about their decision to come in and spend time with me.” Offering her customers a safe way to obtain a suntan is very personal for Souther. When she was 12 years old, her mom started taking her to a salon that used tanning beds. By the age of 17, Souther had skin cancer. However, she continued to use the tanning beds until she was about 20. Today, Souther still deals with skin cancer. She says, “I got it again about nine
months ago just from being in the tanning beds for that many years.” Safely Sunning’s airbrush tan uses an organic-based solution with brown sugar and aloe. The ingredient dihydroxyacetone, better known as DHA, produces the tan. Even when you’re showering, the tan stays. Best of all, it has nothing to do with UV rays. No sunbeds. No light bulbs. Souther says, “Coming here is a very custom service. I get into all the nooks, crannies, and unreachable places. There are a lot of products out there, and a lot of people don’t trust those products at home. They will trust me because of the products I’ve had for a long time and the type of culture that I try to create here. It’s just a safe environment for people to come and let me do my job.” The salon’s staff can provide a custom airbrush tan or an express airbrush tan option, either full- or half-body. Plus, they can bring the tan to you with their mobile tanning capabilities. The shop also offers a teeth-whitening service and sells at-home tanning kits, drying powder to control sweating, and lotions to help your tan look its best. “We just really focus on body positivity and self-love here,” says Souther. “This has never been about a spray tan. It’s just the vehicle that takes us there. I just want everybody to feel good about themselves. I’m always super playful here, and I talk about drizzling you with self-confidence, but it’s real. People can be themselves here. It’s really important that all of my clients feel good when they leave here.” Safely Sunning is located in the BrynK Salon and Color Bar at 309 S. Kansas Ave. To book an appointment, go to safelysunning.com. CONTINUED >

Small Changes Big Impact! As spring approaches, we begin to awaken from our wintertime routines. Perhaps that means taking walks, riding a bike, or spending time in the garden. If you’re having a hard time getting back into the swing of your activities, consider 24 for Life, a Diabetes prevention program. The 24 for Life program will help teach you simple ways to be more active, eat healthier, and develop lasting habits. "I was devastated when the doctor said I was prediabetic and I needed to start medication. Honestly, I was reluctant to start 24 for Life, but knew it was for my own good and besides, it was totally free. My first goal was to lose 5% of my weight, but at the half-way point, I lost 10%! My doctor even cut my medication in half,” said Kelly W., a 24 for Life participant. www.midlandcare.org/24forLife | Donna Doel at 785-250-5210 or ddoel@midlandcc.org

FLOAT AWAY AND FORGET YOUR TROUBLES After serving his country in the U.S. Army for eight years, Casey Campbell sought relief from his stress, sleeping problems and depression. When he tried floating, he finally found his solution. In January 2017, he opened Midwest Float in Topeka in order to share this amazing treatment with others. “He started with just two flotation tanks, and expanded to four operating tanks, an infrared sauna and massage therapy,” says Chelsea Fisher, Casey’s life and business partner. When Chelsea first came to Midwest Float in 2018, it was to get help for her high levels of anxiety. “I was having panic attacks every day. I couldn't breathe, couldn't function. After the first float, I walked out and felt like I could breathe again. I did three in a row and had a total breakthrough on the third day.” When she met Casey, she offered her managerial and marketing background to help out. “That's how our relationship started. I would come in and help the customers and ended up falling in love with it. It became my passion.” Midwest Float offers various sized pods and tanks. The deluxe cabins are large enough that two people can float together. “That's a really big hit for date night, Valentine's Day, and anniversaries,” says Chelsea. “Lights and music are also available in the tanks.”
Some people may be worried about being in a confined space, but in the four years she’s been involved, only one person couldn’t stay in. “You can also leave the doors open so you're getting fresh air.” So, how does floating in a salt-water tank help people? Without the need to fight gravity or tune out outside noise, floaters can experience total relaxation.“There's new research coming out all the time,” she says. “Floating releases tons of dopamine and lowers your cortisol levels, which are your stress levels. It also lowers blood pressure.” See more of the research findings on their website. In addition to the mental aspect, she says many of their customers suffer from chronic pain from fibromyalgia, back injuries and other issues. “It helps alleviate the pressure off your joints and muscles and reduces inflammation and swelling.” Midwest Float will soon be incorporating Elevation, an organic coffee shop, under its roof. The beans will be roasted fresh every 20 minutes and it’ll have some seating, but it’s mostly going to be grab and go. “We'll also be offering specialty drinks and selling bagged coffee. We're planning on bringing in pasties, including allergy friendly and gluten free, from a local bakery as well.” CONTINUED >

Today, the couple has two children together, ages 3 and 1. “The 1 year old has to have surgery on her skull and we’re holding fundraisers to help with that,” says Chelsea. “We've always been so giving with the floats - we give back to veterans every month by letting them float free one day a month, and our float customers have been so supportive in sharing our information, shopping our sales and donating - they're like family.” She adds, “We're just grateful to have the opportunity to serve our community and educate people on the advantages of floating. People who thought they would never do it or wouldn’t like it find that once they try it, they love it.” To learn more, go to midwestfloat.com.

“Jewelry is a very personal purchase. I love to hear the stories behind the requests. We know these pieces will be worn for years and they have sentimental value as well as monetary value. We’re so proud to be a part of their life’s journey.” Dave Horn has spent most of his career in the jewelry business. But the way he got into the business was anything but planned. He grew up near Topeka and held quite a few jobs before finding his true calling. “I burned through jobs like crazy when I was young,” Dave said. “I would work for a few months and then become bored.” He stumbled into jewelry repair at the age of 24 completely by accident. “I found it challenging, interesting, and I discovered I had a knack for it,” Dave shared. “Twenty six years later, here we are.” For more than 20 years, Dave worked for a number of jewelry stores around the Topeka area. He repaired jewelry, set stones, and maintained watches. During that time, he saw what other stores did right, and what they could have done better when it came to customer service. Eventually he began to do jewelry repairs for several local jewelry retailers at home while studying hand engraving. This gave him the ability to make decisions on how repairs were done. It was important to him to purchase more modern and higher quality equipment, tools, and materials, creating an overall better repair for the customer. Then, in 2016, he crossed paths with Dan Donaldson who ran Donaldson’s Jewelers for over 40 years before closing the doors in 2007. Donaldson had created a pop-up store specifically for the holiday season, and he had Dave do his repairs during that time. Dan told Dave how was looking for someone to take over his family business. Dave and his wife Gloria decided to purchase the store in early 2017 and opened it in the fall of that same year. “And that’s how we resurrected a brand and a store that had been closed for nearly a decade,” Dave said. Today, Donaldson’s Jewelers designs and sells custom engagement rings and other jewelry pieces. They specialize in jewelry repair, stone resetting, and hand engraving. Dave says it’s their customer service that really sets them apart. “I really like customer service,” Dave admits. “I like getting to know people, educating them on jewelry, what to look for, how to shop.” “Donaldson’s is much more than another retail shop,” Gloria explains. “Jewelry is a very personal purchase. I love to hear the stories behind the requests.” Sometimes they’re repairing a great grandmother’s heirloom diamond ring. The next order may be a custom necklace celebrating the birth of a child. “We know these pieces will be worn for years and they have sentimental value as well as monetary value,” Gloria continued. “We’re so proud to be a part of their life’s journey.” One of the unique things their customers love is the microscope camera that attaches to a big 4k TV. It shows the jewelry pieces at a magnified level. “I saw that the customer struggled when only a jeweler’s loupe was available to discuss repairs,” Dave shared. “The microscope camera was definitely the first purchase I wanted to make when opening the store.” These close-up views allow Dave to point out signs of wear and tear like broken prongs, and hairline cracks. It’s just one more level of customer service that establishes trust between Dave and his customers and helps build the personal relationships that have become the foundation of his business. Fast turnaround is another advantage Donaldson’s can boast about. While the bigger retailers usually take a couple of weeks for repairs, Donaldson’s handles them on site. Repairs are usually done in less than three days, but most times they can offer next-day turnaround. “Besides a good, quality repair, we know how important it is to get these cherished pieces back in the hands of their owner,” Gloria added. “That is why we order parts every day and have them over-nighted.” “Yeah, our Fed Ex guy knows me pretty well,” Dave added laughing. How do they compete with the bigger chain stores? Dave says the fact that they are smaller is actually an advantage. Because it’s just him and Gloria, Dave says, “We get to make decisions based on our ideals and don’t have a huge payroll or lots of overhead, so we can keep costs down. We don’t spend a lot on TV or radio advertising. It’s all word of mouth for us. I tell people, ‘Just say good things about me behind my back.’” Visit Donaldson’s Jewelers in the heart of the NOTO Arts & Entertainment District at 902 N Kansas Avenue in Topeka. donaldsonsjewelersks.com

Dr. Julie C. Swift-Woods was studying dentistry at the University of Missouri-Kansas City when her mom was diagnosed with gingival recession, also known as receding gums. Dr. Swift-Woods assisted the UM-KC surgical resident with her mom’s procedure and immediately realized she wanted to be a periodontist. In 2004, Dr. Swift-Woods completed a three-year residency at Baylor College of Dentistry, where she learned the surgery skills necessary to treat patients. She has practiced in Topeka for almost twenty years. She and her team treat patients from a broad region of Kansas. Patients are often referred to her office by their dentist, but many call on their own after noticing an issue. “Since periodontal disease doesn’t usually hurt, most people don’t realize there is a problem until their dentist tells them,” says Dr. Swift-Woods. “So, we spend time educating patients about their diagnosis. We talk people through recommended surgical procedures. We don’t rush through things. We treat patients as a whole person. We don’t focus only on their periodontal diagnosis; we also help manage their anxiety.”
A periodontal practice focuses on the supporting structures of the mouth, such as the bones and gums. While dentists target the health and maintenance of teeth, Dr. Swift-Woods is concerned more about plaque causing an inflammatory response that leads to gingivitis and bone loss. Chronic inflammation has been linked to stroke and Alzheimer’s disease, so prevention is key. Her team performs procedures such as gum grafting for exposed roots of teeth and rebuilding bone if there are deep pockets around a tooth or teeth. They also do extractions and implants. While Dr. Swift-Woods has always loved the surgical side of periodontics, she found herself at a professional crossroads at the end of 2017. “As a dentist, we get no business training in school,” she explains. “The mantra is, ‘Produce more!’ Do more dentistry and make more money for the practice. We were doing more than ever. We had our highest collections, but there was no extra money in the bank.” A friend suggested Dr. Swift-Woods read Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowicz. She

“If you had told me five years ago that I wouldn’t be burned out, that I would still be a practicing periodontist, and that I would be helping business owners, women in particular, I would have never believed you. You never know where your life is going to go next.” — DR. JULIE SWIFT-WOODS
describes the book’s cash management ideas as like Dave Ramsey for businesses. The program helped her realize that while her practice was making more than ever, her spending was outpacing her increased revenue. Dr. Swift-Woods implemented the Profit First program in 2018. Since then, she has paid off all remaining business and school loan debt, fully funded the 401(k) profit-sharing accounts, and maintained her take-home pay without working more. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, she saw many of her colleagues struggle. Some dentists had just minimal cash on hand. If it weren’t for the government assistance programs, they would have permanently closed their practices during the coronavirus shutdown. So many of Dr. Swift-Woods’s fellow dentists inquired about Profit First that she became a certified Profit First

THIS FULL-SERVICE FLORIST OFFERS TREASURES GALORE
Lori McNorton always enjoyed being around flowers and realized at a young age what she wanted to do with her life. “My grandmother was big into flower gardens and I’d walk through her gardens, pick the flowers and put them into containers. After high school, I took a floral design course and then went straight into the floral industry.” After working for others over the years, she opened Blooms on Boswell, a full-service flower shop, in 2019. “I had no intentions of having my own shop, but when I ran into the previous owner and he informed me he was closing, I told my husband Tom that I couldn’t imagine another flower shop in Topeka closing.” (Lori and Tom, who works full time at the post office, are born and bred Topekans.) A month later, they took the leap and bought the shop.
“I've been in the industry for 47 years and had a great following and a big clientele - those connections were already in place,” she said. One of the biggest changes she’s made, besides changing the name, is turning part of the shop into a gift and home décor outlet. “We have so many fun home decorations, and a little boutique where we sell all kinds of trendy accessories,” she says. “We also have food products including a new candy line.” For spring, they have candles, artwork, artificial flowers, foliage and more. The shop also carries a nice variety of live plants. “I’ve always specialized in wedding work, so we do a lot of that as well,” says Lori. They are now gearing up again for First Fridays. “A lot of the small businesses stay open later on the first Friday of every month and offer sales and samplings,” says Lori. “It’s a really big thing. People go from place to place to shop and hear live music. We've done a pop-up coffee bar, barbecues, and food tastings.” Another unique offering is their workshops. “We have an outdoor garden area that we've set up for spring and summer workshops,” she says. “We make centerpieces, bouquets and outdoor planters.” Workshops are held all year round, especially during the holidays. “Thanksgiving is huge for centerpieces, and everybody loves to do Christmas swags and centerpieces too,” says Lori. For Mother's day, they’re planning to do porch pots, and on May Day, they’ll have a small area set up so kids can make little paper baskets. Blooms on Boswell is Lori’s happy place and she and her staff make sure it’s a happy place for their customers as well. “We want everybody who comes through our doors to feel special.” In addition to a couple of parttime employees, she has one full-time employee, Barb Long. “I couldn't do it without her,” she says. “She’s a designer who’s always willing to help wherever needed.” Lori calls the flower shop a secret gem in the midst of a residential neighborhood. “We are on the corner of 13th and Boswell, and a lot of people in the last few years have come to realize that there’s a flower shop here,” she says. therapy THE ART OF TELLING A STORY WITH A PHOTO
Kristol Kumar has been photographing people and places for 15 years both locally and internationally. “It’s not about the perfect portrait. It’s about telling the story…peeking into the window of who they are,” Kristol says. “In front of the camera is a vulnerable place to be. I help subjects relax and I bring them to a positive space.” She laughingly calls it photographic therapy. “What’s inside translates to the camera - it shows in their eyes, their posture, their expressions…everything,” she adds. “It’s my job to bring that out and capture it for a lasting memory.” While people are her forte, Kristol also enjoys photography for small business - creating a visual brand identity for websites, stories, and ads. You can find more of her work at KristolKumar.com.
