January marks two milestones for our publication. First, it's our one year anniversary. We are so thankful for you, our readers and our advertisers, who make this magazine possible. From the beginning, our goal has been to bring a sense of pride to Topeka residents by celebrating the good and the positive in our town. Second, we are excited to announce our rebranding to Topeka CityLifestyle. The new year always signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from here. The practice of establishing new goals, or resolutions, for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. With that in mind, this issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical wellness and making purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is a worthy goal for all of us. Other worthwhile goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. This year, my resolution is to focus on being kinder. I want to take the time to think about others and be more mindful of those around me. I would like to see the good in others, be less quick to anger and to practice forgiveness instead. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. Thanks again for making this magazine possible and may 2022 be a year of health and happiness!

A SALAD JAR
FRIENDS MAKE THE ASSEMBLY MORE FUN
PA R T Y
ARTICLE BY LINDA DITCH

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
Two of the top goals set every New Year are healthier eating and better time management. Salad jars are an easy way to check both boxes. With just an hour (or less!) of prep time, it is possible to have a week’s worth of tasty and nutritious meals ready to grab from the fridge when needed. The assembly process is more enjoyable if you invite friends with like-minded goals for a salad jar party. First, you need the jars. While specialty salad containers are on the market, wide-mouth canning jars are a perfect solution. A pint-sized one works great for a side salad to go with a sandwich or soup. The quart-sized jar is best for full-meal salads. Ask your guests to bring two jars of their preferred size, or create a display of jars and lids from which they can choose. For the ingredients, have guests sign up to bring four cups of their favorite topping while you provide the leafy greens. In total, you will need two cups of toppings and four cups of salad greens for each quart jar. Set everything up assembly-line style and let your guests select their favorite ingredients. The key to a good jar salad is in how you layer the ingredients. Here are the steps: 1. Start with the salad dressing. 2. Next, add sturdy veggies like carrots, celery, onions, bell peppers, and cucumber. You could also include roasted sweet potatoes, corn, and peas. 3. Follow up with softer veggies or fruits, such as cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and berries. Wait to add chopped whole tomatoes and avocado (coated with lemon or lime juice to avoid browning) until the day you plan to eat the salad. 4. Now it’s time to add some cooked grains or pasta. Try quinoa, bulgur wheat, brown rice, orzo pasta, or noodles. 5. Protein comes next, such as cheese or beans—or both! You can also add hardboiled egg, chicken, tuna, or leftover steak, though you should wait until the night before or the day of consumption. 6. Now for the crunch layer—nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. 7. Finally, it’s time to add the leafy greens and herbs, which will stay crispy far away from the salad dressing. Whether on your own or with friends, prepping salad jars for the week is an excellent way to meet both your New Year health and time management goals. Enjoy the peace of mind a line of colorful jars brings each time you open the refrigerator door.

THE TALE OF TOPEKA TOLD BY A TEACHER FROM YESTERDAY AND A PUBLISHER FROM TODAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF TOMORROW ARTICLE BY BRIAN RODEHORST AND KELSEY HUBER PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS HALL
As the publisher of Topeka Lifestyle, I feel a responsibility - I might even call it a duty - to the city itself, to share its stories, past and present, in an effort to preserve its rich history. I grew up in Topeka, and there’s just something about your hometown that finds a way into your heart and fastens itself there. We share a history, like old friends. Founded on December 5, 1854, Topeka has a history much longer than my own. I realize, as I’ve been researching the town and reading about the Indians, the first settlers, the changes she has seen, that I am just passing through. One day, my chapter too will end, and new people and events will fill the pages of her story. And because I love her, I want people to know her and remember her and love her as I do. In the 167 years since her birth, Topeka has had a couple of nicknames. One that I remember from my younger days was T-Town, but I never really liked it. Then more recently Top City has become popular. But there is another nickname, much older, that I think fits her best - The Golden City. Most people don’t know it, but the words “Golden City” can still be found on almost all city vehicles, buildings, and even stationery. It has been on the old city seal since the 1970s. When I was growing up in Topeka, I knew that the words Golden City were on the old seal, but I didn’t know why and didn’t really care. But as I got older, I started to take an interest in a lot of the historical things involving Topeka. Where did this nickname come from? I wanted to know. So I researched during the COVID months and talked to many people much wiser than myself. I was told about a book written in 1890. It was called Topeka Pen and Camera Sketches. From what I can find, this is the earliest reference to someone nicknaming Topeka “The Golden City”. Its cover read: Topeka Pen and Camera Sketches By Miss Mary E. Jackson GEO. W. CRANE & Co., PRINTERS AND BINDERS. 1890. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / TO P E KA

The author, Miss Mary E. Jackson, says in her introduction, “The idea of preparing this volume for the public was suggested by the many tourists and visitors to our city, met in the Rapid Transit cars as I daily went to Oakland and Potwin Place in the capacity of a music teacher.” And later, “I have endeavored, in placing this book before the public, to give to strangers some knowledge of our ‘Golden City’, and to present something of interest to our own citizens as well.” I love this quote. While Topeka Lifestyle Magazine celebrates the good and positive in Topeka, I’ve come across many people, some from Topeka and others not, and time and again I hear with amazement,” I didn’t know that was in Topeka”. So, when I read this introduction, I immediately felt a kinship and sameness of purpose with Miss Jackson. We provide knowledge of our city and items of interest to strangers and our own citizens. In the chapter titled “The Golden City - A Vision”, I really love how eloquently she describes what her vision of the Golden City is through the eyes of the native Pottawatomie Indians returning from a hunt at dusk, still seated on their ponies and gazing over the new city from high atop a ridge…“But what was there before their eyes as they gazed over the city of the white man? That city had disappeared; there was in its place a sparkling gem, dazzling their eyes with its brightness. At the outskirts could be distinguished a few dwellings, but they too were transformed into spears of radiant light. Those radiant lights f lickered, wavered, grew higher, and seemingly outshone the rays
of the sun. They were a pale blue, vanishing into dark red. The ray of beautiful pearls gleamed for a moment, then leaped in its stead the rainbow arch. Shafts of light reaching the sky arose, then rested upon the earth. A snowy whiteness, a shade of crimson, losing itself in the brightest lines of amber, intermingled with roseate hues…” and “They had beheld the ref lection of the autumn sun upon the windows and other shining objects, until the whole city was in one blaze of dazzling brightness.” Miss Jackson describes the vantage point from which they viewed the city…“They had followed the course of the river down until they reached the high ridge west of Topeka, where the asylum now stands…”. She referred to the asylum which became the Topeka State Hospital and was demolished around 2000. It was originally located at 3rd & Randolph. I wanted to see Topeka from that high ridge, so we went to this spot and my photographer, Thomas Hall, took the large picture you see in this article. He used a drone and we touched it up a bit to really make it pop. Obviously, modern-day Topeka looks completely different than the Topeka of the 1850s, but I like to think it’s just as beautiful. So, I got to thinking about what this nickname that Miss Jackson gave to Topeka in 1890 means to me. Golden City sounds beautiful, idyllic, rich...it inspires visions of grandeur. It’s a perfect fit with Topeka Lifestyle Magazine because our mission is to celebrate the good and positive in Topeka, and those are exactly the things that make our city golden. CONTINUED >

I ask people all the time, if you had to move to a new city and you had two choices, and the only thing you knew was that one was nicknamed “T-town” and the other “Golden City”, which one would you choose? Miss Jackson is long gone. I learned that she passed at an early age, 27 years, of a type of kidney disease. But before she left this world, she shared her vision, and that’s exactly what I’m trying to do with this magazine. Words are a bridge that spans time and links our hearts and minds to souls from the past. And when we inevitably become those souls, our words and stories will send a message to those waiting in the future. Thank you, Miss Mary E. Jackson, for taking the time to write your words about our beautiful city. My hope is that the photos and stories we tell will inspire all Topekans to be proud of where they live. The next time you’re away from home and someone asks you where you’re from, you hold your head high and say, “I’m from the Golden City!”

Topeka Doctor Helps Establish First Micro-Hospital HOW THIS NEW HEALTHCARE MODEL FELL INTO HOMETOWN HANDS ARTICLE BY COREY SHOUP | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS HALL
When presented with an opportunity to bring a micro-hospital to his home town, Dr. Jared Schreiner knew he wanted to bring the new health care format to Topeka. “My boss asked me, ‘Hey, you know something about micro-hospitals, right?’” says Schreiner, M.D., and chief medical officer of Topeka ER & Hospital. “That’s when the Topeka project fell into my lap.” The Texas-based hospital group Nutex Health was in the process of planning and building Topeka’s first free-standing ER and hospital and was contacting physician groups in the area looking for doctors who might be interested in the project. “When Nutex introduced their plans to build in Topeka, it was a no-brainer,” Schreiner says. “This is my home town, and I was thrilled at the chance to help start a hospital here with a model I believe in.” Schreiner began working at micro-hospitals in Dallas a few years after completing his medical residency there. As a health care provider, he found the relatively new format appealing. “I loved the model,” he says. “I loved that a patient gets more time with a doctor and is made to feel like something more than a number,” he says. "I also loved the team approach. Everyone there genuinely seemed to care
about the patient experience and took a lot of pride in where they worked. It was like a combination of visiting your neighborhood doctor but still dealing with stressful emergencies at the same time.” Schreiner described a recent example of the “team care” approach after treating a heart attack patient from out of town. “He came to us with the usual signs of a heart attack, but was hesitant to get treatment because he had his dog with him,” Schreiner said. “He was concerned about leaving his car here and who was going to take care of his dog.” Schreiner called his parents, who came to Topeka ER & Hospital to pick up and care for the patient’s dog. Meanwhile, the security staff kept a watchful eye on the vehicle until the patient’s wife could come to Topeka and pick up the vehicle and the couple’s dog. The path that allowed Schreiner to share those kind of stories began at the University of Kansas, but in music not medicine. “I was a music education major with vocal emphasis until about midway through second year,” he says. “Then I realized I didn’t want to make a career from music and so took a physiology course and loved it. “At the same time, I had a family member who was ill and in the hospital. the hospital during that time and realized that’s where I wanted to be.” After Schreiner graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2008, he and wife, Erin, moved to Dallas where in 2011, he completed his emergency medicine internship and residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital. After several years of working both at the traditional big hospital ERs and micro-hospitals, Schreiner’s family moved back to Kansas in 2018. The “Topeka project” culminated with Topeka ER & Hospital officially opening its doors on July 27, 2020. In the time since, Schreiner has seen some familiar faces pass through its doors. “Since we’ve opened, every now and then I am able to treat an old friend, classmate, or family friend,” he says. “Being able to help treat the community I grew up in has been the best experience. I’m honored and grateful that I was able to be part of this project. Providing care for the people I grew up with is a huge honor; that’s truly the best.” Schreiner says he is also proud of helping build a team dedicated to providing truly great patient care. “We have an amazing team of doctors, nurses, and support staff,” he says. “Every single person on our team is integral in making this hospital run for the community. It’s just so great to get to watch this team grow from strangers to a family and treat the patients like family, too.”

Dr. Tague’s Center for Nutrition celebrates 25 years!
With 25 years of experience helping over 35,000 patients, the Center for Nutrition (CFN), located in Topeka and Leawood, truly understands the challenges of weight loss. And, since being overweight often leads to medical problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, it’s imperative for people to get proper help. “At Tulane medical school, I studied public health and preventive medicine along with my medical degree,” says Rick Tague M.D., who founded CFN in 1996. “In my public health classes, they taught us it’s better to prevent medical problems than wait until there is a disease to treat. That was ingrained into my head, so when I started my medical practice, I had this mindset. I wanted to do everything possible for my patients to prevent common diseases.” In order to do this, he says, there are two keys. One - a healthy body weight, and two – excellent nutrition. “If people get those two factors right, they can typically enjoy what I call optimum health,” says Dr. Tague. His son, Caleb Tague, M.D., and daughter, Kari Brown, a nurse practitioner, work with their father. Kari provides consultations for new patients, and loves the atmosphere at the Center. “I’m naturally a positive person, so I love seeing people get healthier and encouraging them.”

Dr. Caleb, a family medicine physician in Kansas City, recently took his board certification exam in obesity medicine. “Growing up around my father, I had the mindset that preventing disease is the best medicine,” he says. “And going through residency, you see horribly sick patients, and many of their illnesses are completely preventable.” “Being significantly overweight is a medical disease,” says Dr. Tague. “It’s a disease of the fat cells, which act like cancer, trying to take over the body. Without powerful and well thought out nutritional and medical strategies, it is very difficult for people to manage. We always provide a comprehensive initial evaluation, focusing on determining causes of weight gain, and then use powerful approaches to maximize weight loss and prevent weight regain. We’ve been perfecting our management approach for 25 years.” “We have highly trained physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, dieticians, and nutritionists on staff,” says Kari. “We help people lose significant weight, sometimes 20, 40, or 100 or more pounds, but equally important to us is achieving optimum health. As we’re helping with weight loss, we look at health problems

that go hand in hand and address them. Our main goal is to improve overall health and quality of life.” Every patient is given a thorough evaluation and a customized plan. “Everyone has unique needs and you have to treat it based on the individual,” says Dr. Caleb. “There is no onesize-fits-all plan that works for everyone.” Once patients reach their goals, they move to maintenance where support continues. “Unfortunately, being significantly overweight is a chronic, progressive disease,” says Dr. Caleb. “We can manage it, but there are no permanent cures. So once the weight loss is achieved, we help patients prevent regaining weight.” Candice Byrd, from Topeka, went to the Center in Topeka in July of 2021 – by mid-December, she lost 72 pounds, reaching her goal weight! “I met Dr. Rick at my first appointment after my consult,” she says. “He’s awesome. He was very knowledgeable and wasn’t offering me something that wasn’t going to work. Everyone is so encouraging. They’re going to support you.” Today, Candice feels amazing. She is off her diabetic and blood pressure medications and her mobility is much better. “It’s like a new lease on life, and even my confidence has gone up,” she says. In addition to Dr. Rick, Dr. Caleb, and Kari, the two centers are staffed by people who are not only specialists in their fields, but also caring and compassionate professionals. “There is a bias against being overweight in our nation and the patient is often blamed for their unwanted weight gain, so there’s a lot of inappropriate guilt and shame,” says Dr. Tague. “We understand the challenges and the medical causes, including metabolism and appetite disorders, and it’s not the patients’ faults.
Whether they need to lose 20 pounds or 100 plus pounds, they’ll be treated with respect, kindness and encouragement.” For Kari, working alongside her father has been wonderful. “Working with my dad has given me a glimpse into his heart that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. This has been his calling and his life’s work,” she says. “Getting to have that deeper relationship with him is really sweet.” Adds Dr. Caleb, “It’s been fun to see my father grow the Center into a thriving medical practice that’s making such a big difference in so many people’s lives.” For Dr. Tague, having his children working with him is a dream come true. “We have five children and all five have worked in our office in some capacity (four out of five are in the medical field, and another is currently in law school).” His wife, Kathy, a nurse, worked alongside him for many years as well. Dr. Tague’s goal for his patients is to be trim, fit, healthy and happy. “The Center’s mission is optimum health through the power of weight control and excellent nutrition. When people get those two things right, health falls into place.” To find out more, or to schedule a free, educational consultation, call 785-273-4443 or go to https://taguenutrition.com/.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 34
T R E N D SE T T E R | FITN ESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
