There’s No Place Like Home

"There's no place like home." Dorothy repeatedly told us that in The Wizard of Oz . But we didn't need a movie to tell us about the indescribable meaning the word "home" has. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and warmth it holds for all of us is unquestionable.

So we thought about "home" and what it means to each of us. For some, it's the food and drinks. For others, the aesthetic and design. Home is also community. But mostly, home is about the people.

And as you flip through the pages of this issue, you'll read about lots of people who live and work in the area. We offer a new travel idea for spring breakPensacola Beach! We also give you a recipe for whoopie pies in honor of Pi Day!

I'd be remiss not to mention cover stars Dan + Shay who are filled with gratitude for their fans and are excited to be performing in their home arena at Bridgestone.

We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise Thompson's Station and the surrounding areas and hope the small lens into their lives and work resonates with you. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

GET OUTSIDE AND EXPERIENCE

THE JOY OF MUSIC THIS SUMMER AT SPRING HILL’S HARVEY PARK

ARTICLE BY ALYSSA BURLINGAME PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | ENTERTAINMENT

Summer is for sunshine and spending time with friends—especially with good music. Entering its 12th season, Pickin’ in the Park is a fun, family-friendly event where you and your loved ones can soak up the sun, hear amazing local music, eat good food from local food trucks, and simply enjoy summertime.

Matt Meyer, the event organizer, says, “I have been organizing music events ever since college. Small band shows in Martin, Tennessee pizza joints, open mic nights at Ohio University coffee shops and in Jackson, Tennessee bookstores. I love sponsoring live music events and bringing people together.”

Meyer adds, “I also just love music. It started with a love of the Beatles and Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Then I learned how to play guitar listening to “Closer to Fine”  by the Indigo Girls and John Denver songs. I enjoy all the musicians I have known and played with for over a decade!”

From May to September, the talent displayed at Pickin’ in the Park ranges from armchair pickers to Nashville Cats. Whether you love folk music, rock, pop, or everything in between, you may get to hear the next big star before they make it big, or you may get to hear someone a little more well known.

Meyer says, “I love the parks in Spring Hill. When I moved here, I just felt like Harvey Park would be an excellent place for a live music event. So I set up my equipment and invited some locals to join me and it just grew from there.”

Since the event is completely independent, Meyer and his team rely on sponsors to keep it going. And they’re

Lee Company’s Dan Kalman Is A Leading Advocate For The Trade Industry

Dan Kalman has a keen appreciation for how one’s career path and quality of life are inextricably intertwined. For 28 years at Lee Company, he’s been in the business of helping people live their lives comfortably. Along the way, he’s advanced from HVAC technician all the way to Executive Vice President of Service. His experience has led him to become a staunch advocate for careers in the trades.

“Right now, in the trade industry as a whole, three people are retiring for every one that enters the field,” says Kalman. “We’re going to have a problem if we don’t ask young adults to consider trade careers.” But according to Kalman, with problems come opportunities. “Not everyone is meant to be a doctor or lawyer and the trades are an honorable industry,” he says. “They offer great opportunities to be trained in a skill set and to go to work immediately and earn money quickly. There’s never been a better time to be a plumber, mechanic or electrician. These careers offer stable work and good incomes that should appeal to young people.”

Kalman, a Grand Rapids, Michigan native, embarked on his career in 1990 after earning an associate degree from Ferris State University with an emphasis on heating, ventilation and refrigeration. He and his soonto-be wife, Jennifer, moved to Middle Tennessee after visiting her parents in the Thompson’s Station/Spring Hill area around Christmas time in 1994. “Everything happened very quickly,” says Kalman. “We fell in love with the place, married within a month and moved to the Brentwood area.”

With requisite trade skills and several years of experience, Kalman was able to find work with a small HVAC company. After a few months, he applied for and was hired for a job at Lee Company, which was then a small outfit where he was one of five service technicians.

"Vans For Cans" community event where Lee Company technicians collect canned goods to be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank

As the company grew, so did his responsibilities. He became service manager shortly after his arrival, moved steadily through the ranks and has served in his current capacity since 2019.

But what stands out about his experience is Lee Company’s commitment to its people. “When I applied for the job, I was greeted by a young lady, Angela Curtis,” says Kalman. “She’s still the receptionist today. For someone to answer the door and phone as long as she has is really a testament to the company that we are. And the lady who hired me 28 years ago, currently works for me on one of our teams. I could walk out of my office now and talk to the person who hired me.”

When he’s not working to help customers stay comfortable, Kalman and his family enjoy weekends on the lake. This past summer was their first on their houseboat. “We typically tie up with two or three other houseboats and spend the weekend out there,” he says. “The dock life is awesome. It’s like-minded people who escape the hustle and bustle of working. We have group dinners and games in the evening.” He also enjoys the festivals in downtown Franklin and going to downtown Nashville for dinner, shows and the occasional Titans or Predators game.

But like everyone else on his team, Kalman remains on call at all times. “Our industry demands that we’re available 24/7 so we have technicians who are out all the time,” he says. “And when the weather pops, it gets crazy. We see people when they’re at their worst, when it’s 100 degrees and the air conditioning is broken. But that’s when we shine, and we’re prepared to answer those calls.”

It’s the way things are done in the trade industry. LeeCompany.com

REDUCE YOUR RISK WITH A HOME MAINTENANCE PLAN

There’s no such thing as a “good time” for your HVAC or plumbing to fail. That’s why Lee Company’s Dan Kalman encourages customers to join a preventative maintenance program.

“Mechanical equipment needs to be serviced regularly or it’ll break down when weather is the most severe because that’s when it’s under the most stress,” he says.

Lee Company’s 20,000+ plan members have their heating, air, electrical and plumbing systems inspected annually. “We can frequently make repairs or replacements before an emergency,” says Kalman.

Members also receive discounts on repairs and new equipment purchases.

Whoopie! IT’S PI DAY

I’m all in on any occasion that includes pie. Pi Day was created by physicist Larry Shaw in 1988 to bring an element of fun to math. On March 14, the most famous mathematic symbol gets its own all-day celebration.

The little guy that represents the circumference of a circle and its diameter is as good a reason as any for a party, don’t you think? Round foods are fun menu choices, and pies of all kinds traditionally top the list of possibilities.

While little mathematicians enjoy Pi Day activities, serve up these circles on steroids. My Whoopie Pies are from another stratosphere. In my catering business, a longtime client insisted they be a part of every single event. Their guests clamored for them.

Sink your teeth in these Snickerdoodle flavored cakey sandwich cookies with their sweet creamy filling, and I think you’ll agree Pi Day might be worth celebrating all year long.

STOPPING AT BRIDGESTONE ARENA FOR THEIR ‘HEARTBREAK ON THE MAP TOUR’ O N

“Music is so much bigger than all of us.”

Dan + Shay, the dynamic country music duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, first captured the hearts of audiences with their 2014 debut album, Where It All Began . Renowned for a series of chart-topping hits like “19 You + Me,” “Nothing Like You,” “From The Ground Up,” “Tequila” and “Speechless,” and three consecutive Grammy wins from 2019-2021, Dan + Shay are beloved for their harmonious blend of soulful vocals and compelling songwriting.

After a near split that helped them find their mojo again, 2023 saw the release of their fifth studio album, Bigger Houses.

The boys have just embarked on a highly anticipated new tour, “The Heartbreak On The Map Tour,” showcasing not only the evolution of their sound but their extreme gratitude for this next step in their lives and career. “There’s really something special about this tour. Dan and I have been on a journey the last couple of years so we’re really in the best place we’ve ever been in and we have so much gratitude that we get to do this for a living,” says Shay Mooney.

“The Heartbreak On The Map Tour” kicked off on February 29 in Greenville, South Carolina with an upcoming stop on the 19-city arena tour at Bridgestone

Arena on March 21. Shay says, “There’s going to be a freshness to this tour. The production is something we’ve never done before. It’s bigger and better than we’ve ever done. It’s gonna be a breath of fresh air. We’ve got a lot of gratitude we’re coming into this tour with. Fans are gonna feel that. I’m healthier than I’ve ever been. Our fans are gonna be excited. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. I’m fired up!”

Fans can expect nothing less than Dan + Shay giving it their all. “One thing we make sure to do is to have a lot of rehearsals. We rehearse every single move we make, so we don’t have to think about where we have to be. If we’re thinking about that, then we’re not gonna have a great time. We want to be prepared. We’re forever grateful that our fans are spending their hard-earned money to come see us play so we want to be sure we’re putting on the best show that we can.”

Shay adds, “Before the show, one major thing we always do with our band and our crew is to have this moment where we remind ourselves how lucky we are that we get to do this. It’s such a team effort. We’ve got four other guys behind us in our band that are just as much a part of the show and there’s guys that are running lights and running sound. Without them behind the scenes, the show wouldn’t happen. We take a moment before the show to thank all of those people.”

Dan is co-producer (along with Scott Hendricks, a former Franklin Lifestyle cover) on the Bigger Houses album, a title Shay doesn’t necessarily want. “Music is so much bigger than all of us. And there are so many things about creating music that I can say are my favorite things. Production is such a cool piece of it because it’s about how a song is going to be perceived by the rest of the world. But I’m afraid if I learn too much about it, Dan’s gonna make me do more work,” Shay says laughingly.

The duo also completed the taping of the 25th season of NBC’s The Voice as coaches , which premiered February 26. It’s a first for the show to have a coaching duo with two chairs and one button. Shay says, “We’re excited to make a little bit of history and be the first duo on the show. It was incredibly humbling. The first couple of days took some getting used to because there was just so much at once. You’re being filmed the whole time. Once we settled in, we were there in the moment realizing that this is really, really special. It’s an extremely rare thing that most people don’t get to be a part of. You’re sharing the stories of all of these people coming through and you get to be a part of their journey.”

While Dan + Shay sing several songs about heartbreak and named this tour after it, gratitude for what they have is what this tour is really about. DanAndShay.com

VISIT PENSACOLA

Tired of the crowded 30A beaches? Traffic, price hikes and lack of public beach access got you down? Enter Pensacola Beach, a serene, family-friendly vacation option to both 30A and Panama City Beach.

Pensacola was founded in 1559 and is full of rich history from the Indians to the Civil War. A multicultural community that was ruled under five different flags, Pensacola not only offers white sand beaches and emerald waters, but arts and culture, entertainment, outdoor adventure, history and heritage, shopping and sports for a wonderful family vacation that appeals to everyone.

STAY

Fairfield Inn & Suites Pensacola Beach is a 209-room beachfront hotel with the Gulf Coast’s largest lazy river at 315 feet long! Enjoy a zero-entry pool with a two-story pool bar and lounge and a dune walkover that leads directly to the pristine beach. Ask for one of their kid suites with bunk beds.

For a Mediterranean-inspired stay, check out Portofino Islands Resort, named after the village on the Italian Riviera. Portofino overlooks both the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound and offers five towers of private luxury condos, exclusive outdoor pools, tennis courts, two full adventure centers, several restaurants, and a full spa and lifestyle center.

EAT

Pensacola boasts a desirable restaurant scene. Don a pair of flip-flops for some casual fare or dress for the evening and enjoy upscale waterfront dining. The choice is yours and there are many. Check out the Scenic 90 Cafe, a homestyle diner celebrating 25 years this May under local legend and chef Gus Silivos.

The Grand Marlin, a favorite among the locals, offers the area’s best selection of fresh seafood from the kitchen of award-winning Chef Greg McCarthy. Be sure and try the lobster fingers.

Salt has its home in the Hilton on Via De Luna Drive. Coastal Mediterranean cuisine is on the menu. Treat yourself to the fresh calamari.

Angelena’s in downtown Pensacola serves up some of the best Italian food under Food Network personality and Top Chef winner James Briscione. Mangia!

Downtown Pensacola

“PENSACOLA IS THE ONLY DESTINATION THE NORTHWEST FLORIDA PANHANDLE HAS A WALKABLE ANDHISTORIC DOWN

The Dog House is another downtown must-try but with a decidedly different vibe. Give their Rubble Rage hot dog a taste. Mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, chili, sriracha, sour cream and Fruity Pebbles cereal make for an epic lunch.

Flora-Bama Yacht Club, located in Perdido Key is legendary Get there by boat or car and enjoy the waterfront views and fresh seafood. Venture across the street to take in some live music and enjoy a bushwhacker at the world-famous lounge that spans the Florida and Alabama state lines.

DO

The Naval Aviation Museum is a must-do. It’s located on an actual naval air station. The museum has more than 4,000 artifacts, 150 beautifully restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aviation, flight simulators, cockpit

trainers and special exhibits. Even if you’re not an aviator buff, the museum is something that will make your visit to Pensacola unforgettable. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the Blue Angels take to the sky during a practice.

Pensacola Lighthouse is also located on the naval air base. Climb the 177 steps to the top and enjoy spectacular views of the Pensacola Pass.

In 1971, Congress established the  Gulf Islands National Seashore “in order to preserve for public use and enjoyment certain areas possessing outstanding natural, historic, and recreational values.” For over 40 years the National Park Service has preserved this special place in keeping with that purpose. Enjoy bird watching, hiking, boating, swimming, and fishing on these beautiful public lands. Take a trip out to Fort Pickens and up your history game with the fortress that once housed Union troops and Apache leader Geronimo.

Perdido Key, otherwise known as the lost key, is a barrier island located between Pensacola and Orange Beach, Alabama. Perdido Key is home to Big Lagoon State Park, the gateway to the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail and the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

No trip to Pensacola would be complete without a trip to the downtown area. Stroll Palafox Street and grab a coffee at any of the coffee shops. Enjoy restaurants, bars, boutiques and galleries. Take some time to walk the three-mile Settlement Trail and explore Historic Pensacola Village.

In season, hop on the city ferry that connects Downtown Pensacola to Pensacola Beach or the free island trolley to nearly three dozen stops along the beach from the east to the west end of the island.

“I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT WRITING A BOOK. THE MEMORY FLOWED FROM MY MIND AND ONTO THE PAPER AS IF IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY.”

Know Your Neighbor: Author Tammy Mezera

Magical Memories in I Love Southern Summer Nights

Amidst COVID, a bit of magic found its way to Thompson’s Station resident Tammy Mezera. Yet the magic of this story actually started 15 years ago in a poignant Facebook post where Tammy shared about a perfect Southern summer night spent with her family. Little did she know this seemingly casual post would set the stage for an extraordinary creative journey.

Fast forward to April 2020, when a twist of fate brought Tammy’s nostalgic post back to life as a Facebook memory. This time, Tammy noticed a friend’s previously unseen comment suggesting something magical – turning Tammy’s cherished memory into a children’s book. Despite never considering herself a writer, her love for reading stories to her nine children and ten grandchildren inspired her to give it a try.

Determined, Tammy wrote out the memories of that magical evening, and by the end of April, she had an encouraging start to her tale. The true magic unfolded in late May when Tammy shared her draft with her church friend, Elizabeth Hoffman, over coffee at the Frothy Monkey. Loving the magic of this children’s book, Elizabeth graciously set aside writing her own book, Here I’m Happy, to contribute invaluable details and bring the story to life with her enchanting illustrations.

A year later, their magic materialized into the self-published gem, I Love Southern Summer Nights. This heartwarming story, accompanied by Elizabeth’s captivating illustrations, has touched the hearts of both adults and children alike. Born from a simple Facebook memory, this delightful tale has now transformed into a published children’s book, celebrating the pure joys found in Southern summer nights.

You can find I Love Southern Summer Nights on Amazon, eagerly awaiting readers of all ages to bask in its enchanting magic.
