A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
CREATE A COZY AND COMFORTABLE GUEST ROOM
16
H OST IN G T IP S | HO ME + D E SIGN
When guests are coming to stay with you, give them a welcoming space that will feel like a home away from home. For help with creating this perfect guest room, Thompson's Station resident and interior designer Travis Hill Bennett of THB Design (also located in Thompson’s Station) is on hand to give us some great tips to create that cozy and comfortable sanctuary. “Good bedding is important,” he says. “You should have the layers, extra pillows, coverlet, and a duvet to add that warm and cozy feel to the bed. I think it's also important to have a carafe or bottled water next to the bed as well as assorted snacks that your guests would enjoy.” A vase of fresh flowers also adds a little luxury to the room. If there’s space, having a chair or other comfortable upholstery is a great addition so guests can have a place to sit and read or put on their shoes.
“I would also say to provide a luggage rack because you don't want that chair to become just that!” says Travis. “Make space in the closet and at least one or two drawers in a dresser as well so they can unpack and put the suitcase away.” Instead of flipping on that bright overhead light fixture, add a table or floor lamp for softer lighting, especially for when they want to relax and maybe read at night. Speaking of reading, place some interesting coffee table books or magazines in the room that they can peruse. “This way, if they're sitting up late at night, they will have something interesting to flip through,” says Travis. If your home has hardwood floors throughout, a nice rug to step on when getting out of bed is also a necessary touch. “Rugs add another softening layer,” says Travis. Window treatments, such as blinds or roller shades, and drapery on the windows will filter or block the morning light while providing privacy. In the bathroom, stock plenty of towels and maybe a basket of small toiletries. “I think it’s important to add that little touch of something extra,” he says. Of course, a fresh new bar of soap or a bottle of shower gel and washcloths are necessities. For Travis, helping clients create lovely spaces in their homes is something that he’s enjoyed doing since he was young, and he takes pride in using his many years of education and experience in interior design to do just that.

“I THINK
Let the light in, keep the blues out.
IT’S IMPORTANT TO ADD THAT LITTLE TOUCH OF SOMETHING EXTRA.”
“What I've heard people say is that they just can't wrap their heads around design,” he says. “I went to school for this, I have a degree, and just that little extra level of knowing something or pointing something out that maybe they didn't realize is very helpful. I’m there for them for whatever they may need. I've worked for a very high-end firm for eight years and I've been trained how to create a timeless design.” However, he is happy to work with all clients’ tastes and style preferences, from modern to traditional. Travis, a Thompson's Station resident, moved to the area with his husband a few years ago and is excited about the growth in the area. "We have noticed more and more of our friends are moving in this direction as well." He says being an interior designer in the South is a little different than being a designer elsewhere. “I think the homes in the South are so much more important to those who live here,” he says. “We take pride in our homes, we love a reason to entertain, and we also love to decorate for the holidays. Your home should reflect you.” THB-Design.com

WHAT WOMEN BINGE Melissa Joan Hart’s Celebrity Podcast Dishes On All The Things ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Melissa Joan Hart, a name synonymous with ‘90s television and her portrayal of the iconic teenage witch Sabrina, catapulted to fame with the 19962003 Sabrina the Teenage Witch series, after her early success with Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains It All. While acting was her first inroad into Hollywood, it’s actually directing that has kept her busy these last few years. “I got my DGA {Directors Guild of America} card when I was about 21 or 22 years old. I just love it. I directed a bunch of Young Sheldon episodes and I’ve done The Goldbergs, ICarly, and a bunch of Christmas movies. I do a lot of the true crime Lifetime stuff too, and people are like, ‘Where have you been?’ The answer is ‘Behind the camera, a lot.’”

“I didn’t even really understand podcasts for a very long time. I loved Dax Shepard’s podcast and loved his format of just talking to celebrities and friends they had in their circle and just diving a little deeper.” Now she’s also behind the microphone. Launched in January of 2022, the popular “What Women Binge” podcast is Hart’s latest project. “I felt like when I would go on these talk shows, I would get about three and half minutes to dive into everything, and the first thing they wanted to know is something about my past, about Sabrina or Clarissa, and how I started in the business. Then they’d get into whatever we are there to promote. It felt like I was always rushed to get all this information out. It was always the same. I like the idea of sitting with someone and getting to know them better,” says Hart. And that’s exactly what she does with her co-host and friend, Amanda Lee and their celebrity guests. Guests have included Rita Moreno, Jason Priestley, Gary Sinise, Mario Lopez, Lacey Chabert, Kimberly

With guest Erin Cahill (C)
Williams-Paisley, and Hart’s former Sabrina co-star, Caroline Rhea, to name just a few. At almost 120 episodes under their belt, Hart says it was a lot of hard work in the beginning. “Doing research, getting the guests and then scheduling people. I’d love to have Barbara Eden on. My brain is always working to try and find guests, especially Nashville people who can come into our studio.” Hart relocated to Nashville about three years ago. “I’m from New York, lived in Los Angeles for 15 years, lived in Connecticut for 12, lived in Tahoe for two. I love moving around like that, but it’s really hard on the kids and the family. I am also very much like ‘I want a routine,’ even though my life’s not routine. I would have stayed in Connecticut for forever I think, if my husband hadn’t been so adamant about getting back to the South.” (Hart’s husband, Mark Wilkerson, is originally from Alabama and owns BFT Brentwood gym.) Hart continues, “I enjoy it here. It’s a great town. I have never seen so many concerts. In my entire life, I haven’t seen as many concerts as I’ve seen in the last year.” She adds, “When we first moved here, everyone was telling me we had to go to Puckett’s. We went one night and there was a band playing, and it was so great to see. I just loved that, and we loved going down to downtown Franklin. I love the restaurants around there too.” As we eagerly anticipate what’s next for Melissa Joan Hart, we’ll be listening. YouTube.com/@MelissaJoanHartOfficial @whatwomenbinge

Ron and Cheryl Paliotta
O
riginally from Rhode Island, Ron and Cheryl Paliotta are the owners of Music & Heart Jewelry and have been local to Spring Hill for 20 years. Ron has been in the jewelry business his entire life, and since his family’s business was no longer operating, he missed doing what he loved. And so Music & Heart was born. Ron, who brings 40 years of experience to his craft, started by making wire bracelets in his garage and having them plated, and it has since moved to a more sustainable business.
Cheryl says, “Music is the rhythm of the heart. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks or sings. Music speaks what the heart sings.” As a nod to being in Music City (Nashville), much of their jewelry contains musical instruments as pendants, such as guitars and pianos. Their jewelry is all 22k gold, platinum, or rhodium-plated with a guarantee replacement in the event of any defects (though they’ve never had that issue). What they do is so much more than just a jewelry business—it’s a mission. One day, they hope to expand, offering jobs to mothers and allowing them to work
whatever hours work for their schedules so they can be there for their children. They also hope to expand to employ handicapped individuals part-time. Ron and Cheryl have been married for 55 years, have three daughters, and are loving grandparents. While they hope to get Music & Heart Jewelry back into airport stores, currently you can find their jewelry on display at First Horizon Bank in Spring Hill and at Painted Tree in Franklin on the revolving heart stand directly to the left of the entrance. ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.
Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!
Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.
1
Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.
2
Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?
3
If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.
4
Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.

Four Seasons Bora Bora FourSeasons.com/BoraBora
Privacy and so much blue water. Bora Bora, French Polynesia At the Four Seasons Bora Bora, bucket list overwater bungalows line a glassy lagoon, inviting early-morning swims off your own private dock with a bright breakfast table set on your patio overlooking Mount Otemanu. The morning air is like silk, with a lithe breeze promising more of the same. Later, meander down the shady paths of the resort to the Te Mahana Spa. With breathtaking lagoon and Pacific Ocean views from twin infinity pools, the treatment begins with local juices and fruit, a foot massage, and then continues with rebalancing rituals starring indigenous ingredients like skin-smoothing, Tahitian-black-pearl powder and detoxifying algae sourced from the ocean. A full body scrub, massage, and hour-long soak in a coconut bath will leave you thankful and grounded. You can connect with the underwater world by snorkeling with a resident marine biologist and leave a legacy by grafting coral to repopulate the sun bleached lagoon. Dinners at the Four Seasons Bora Bora offer the ultimate date night experience, and a private moonlit swim is the perfect nightcap.

The Willows TheWillowsPalmSprings.com
A secluded escape surrounded by mountains. Palm Springs, California With only 17 guest rooms, The Willows feels like an exclusive private hideaway where you expect to see celebrities around the pool or world leaders hiding behind newspapers at the three-course breakfast on the patio. Originally a millionaire’s private luxury hideaway the Italianate style mansions were built side-by-side for best friends, captains of industry where they entertained movie stars and political giants. Dr. Albert Einstein and his wife were frequent guests. The seclusion, though just blocks from the Palm Springs village, is intoxicating. You’ll meet the most interesting people at the complimentary afternoon wine and hors d’oeuvres in the charming sitting room and find a new friend in one of the many engaging reads on the shelves dotting the thoughtfully renovated property. Rooms include oversized tiled showers, priceless antique pieces and a turndown service to make you feel like the royalty you are. Situated at the base of rugged Mt. San Jacinto with views of the Coachella Valley, The Willows is a perfect base for exploring the Palm Springs mid-century architecture of Hollywood titans or hiking the Andreas or Big Morongo Canyons or nearby Joshua Tree. Open September through May.
