THE MULEHOUSE HAS COLUMBIACOMINGTHEMTO PROVIDEDPHOTOGRAPHY|ATLASEDBYARTICLE

In an indirect way, The Mulehouse in downtown Columbia owes its exis tence to a fictional Iowa cornfield. “We built The Mulehouse without excuse and spared no expense,” says owner Blair Garner. “Much like ‘Field of Dreams,’ we felt that if you build it, they will And aftercome.”aseven million dollar ren ovation, patrons have been lining up to see name brand acts in the former First Baptist Church. Since its May of 2021 opening, The Mulehouse has hosted more than 50 public shows with 17 sellouts, and more than 150 pri vate events. Notable performers have included Pistol Annies, Amy Grant, Lee Brice and Tyler Farr.

Owner Blair Garner

MULEHOUSETHE

The venue, which can accommodate up to 500 is a far cry from what Garner found when he acquired the building. The old church had been overrun by mold and it was home to many wild and stray animals. There were local conversations about leveling the structure and starting over. “For those in the community, it became painful to see a beloved building fall into dis repair,” he says. But in a short time, Garner, along with his husband, Eric, have turned it into a local treasure.

Currently The Mulehouse occupies about half of the structure’s 55,000 square feet. According to Garner, the next steps include building-out that space with a boutique hotel and restaurant. Not if, but when that happens, perhaps in the next year, he says it will be with partners who adhere to the same standards as the Garners. TheMulehouse.com

SHOW CALENDAR September: • Friday 2 End Of The Line: An Allman Brothers Tribute Band • Thursday 22 Songteller: The Music of Reba with Liz Hengber and Will Robinson • Friday 23 Eaglemaniacs • Friday 30 Jeff Allen October: • Thursday 13 Sister Hazel • Thursday 20 Storytellers: 90’s Country with Victoria Shaw, Gary Burr and Bob DiPiero November • Friday 4 Jon McLaughlin  13| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/THOMPSONSSTATIONSEPTEMBER 2022

Garner’s mission, for patrons and performers, is “to provide an experience that is so deep and so rich that it becomes a memory. People will go where they feel welcome and appreciated and they will want to return. Shortcuts never win.”

The “no shortcuts” rule applies to The Mulehouse’s technology. According to Garner, who is best known for his work as an acclaimed country music disc jockey, it is the first venue in America to be built around livestreaming and one of only two (Radio City Music Hall in New York is the other) that’s entirely 4K video resolution. “We can serve music fans whether they are here in person or living in Norway,” he says. “And the building is prewired for 8K so when that technology comes, we’re ready for a plug-and-play transition.”

“I’m the visionary, the one who believes anything is possible,” says Blair. “Eric is the numbers guy, ana lytical and pragmatic. He takes my vision and puts it into practical terms by which it can be achieved at a consistent level of quality. It’s important for us to crawl before we run.”

ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOUIS LEGGIERI MAKER’S STUDIO | STYLE + BEAUTY A Hidden Gem OUTSIDER MARK FARRELL 16

Hidden in a nondescript office park in Spring Hill is the U.S. headquarters of Buffalo Craft Company, LLC. This is where owner Mark Farrell immerses himself in the art of cus tom jewelry design and fabrication. Not just for the rich and famous, Mark makes custom jewelry an approachable, accessible and enjoyable experience for everyone.   Growing up with an unorthodox way of thinking and seeing things, Mark relished being an outsider. In his youth, he sported a multi-colored mohawk, wore flagrant fashions and discovered his love of being outside surrounded by nature. Albeit a bit more refined, Mark is still a self-pro claimed outsider. His body is a creative canvas for body art and he is still literally an outsider, often hiking the trails at Henry Horton State Park and sharing his love of nature with his wife, Kate, and their three young children. During our interview, Mark pointed out passers by who, wrapped up in technology, mindlessly walked past the beauty of their (and our) surroundings. Noticing the things nobody thinks about led Mark to merge his passion for jewelry design and fabrication with his love for art and nature to create Elegant World, his earth-conscious line of wearable high-end jewelry art. The hyper-realistic, nature based line features handcrafted stackable rings, elegant necklaces and delicately designed earrings. Each piece is steeped in nature and parallels a life story. The Journey ring, for example, has a strongly pronounced, uneven texture, akin to the bark of a mature tree, symbolizing the memories added each year of life. The little bumps in the design signify the ups and downs that come with every life fully lived. Meant to be worn or gifted to a spe cial someone, the Journey ring celebrates strength, resilience, and life itself. In keep ing with nature’s ability to tell a life story, the Parasol earrings celebrate whimsy, imagination and life’s magic. Inspired by the incredible construction of forest mushrooms often found hidden beyond majestic trees and shady branches, the delicate gills and intricate ridges have been perfectly captured in the design and fabrication of these earrings.

HOME UPDATE | HOME + DESIGN ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI TRANSFORM YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS WITH FRESH AND BEAUTIFUL COLORS A Team of Painting Professionals Scout Turner and Dylan Ritter 20

A professional and pristine paint job can make a home or build ing really stand out and look new again. CertaPro of Nashville and Middle Tennessee has been providing this service for resi dential and commercial properties for over 28 years. Keeping up with trends is important in every business, and knowing what colors are in and out is critical for keeping struc tures and surfaces looking modern. “One of the ‘Colors of the Year’ for 2022 is Evergreen Fog SW9130 by Sherwin Williams,” says Dylan Ritter, who owns the business along with his wife, Scout Turner. “It looks beautiful when trying to freshen up any space.”

Working together really brings them a lot of happiness.

He says a couple of their favorite trends to bring to their resi dential customers are painting cabinets and powder bathrooms unique colors, as well as doing full house interior and exte rior repaints that totally transform the look of their homes.

The couple, who were born and raised in Middle Tennessee and now live in West Nashville with their three “fur babies”Whitley, Cash and Wallen - incorporate their personal values into their business. “We strive for continuous improvement, a family culture, working hard, and always doing the right thing,” says Dylan. “This is important to us because everyone in our business shares the same values in and outside of the business. It's just who we are.”

“Growing our team and business here at CertaPro has been the most enjoyable thing to do together” says Scout. “Seeing the hard work pay off and the culture that we've built brings us together even more.”  Certapro.com/nashvillesouth

Four years before purchasing CertaPro, Dylan was handling residential sales for the company, so he was already familiar with the business. Growing the residential and commercial depart ments and establishing relationships has been very satisfying for the husband and wife team. They ensure that every one of their customers is completely satisfied. “Serving customers in our local community is a passion of ours,” says Scout. “After years of experience and seeing cus tomers' visions turned into a reality, we wanted to continue to serve our community with painting services.”

Only a global pandemic could have forced Brandi Carlile to hit pause. After two hardfought decades-in-the-making, Carlile was in the midst of experiencing the biggest highs of her acclaimed career thus far. From a show-stealing debut at the 61st GRAMMY Awards, to her first sold-out arena show at Madison Square Garden, to an ever-growing number of awards and acco lades, all-star collaborations and countless other staggering achievements.

It was during this time that her most recent album,  In These Silent Days took shape. Inspired by the mining of her own history while writing her #1  New York Times best-selling memoir,  Broken Horses, the new ten-song record chronicles acceptance, faith, loss and love and channels icons like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Elton John and Joni Mitchell—the latter two who, by some sort of cosmic alignment of the stars, have turned out to be close friends in addition to being her biggest heroes and inspirations.

The best songs, records, and bands transport you back to the first moment you heard them each and every time they play. Whether you caught a house party gig after Better Than Ezra formed in 1988 at Louisiana State University, heard “Good” on the radio once it hit number one during 1995, became a fan following Taylor Swift’s famous cover of “Breathless” in 2010, or saw them head lining sheds in 2018, you most likely never forgot that initial introduction to the New Orleans quartet founded by Kevin Griffin [lead vocals, guitar, piano] and Tom Drummond [bass, backing vocals]. Those hummable melodies, unshakable guitar riffs, and confessional lyrics qui etly cemented the group as an enduring force in rock music.  Griffin co-founded the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival, which counts Justin Timberlake among others as part ners. Circa 1930 OUR TOWN | LIFE + CULTURE Historic Tours That Educate ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Get An Interesting Glimpse Into Local History And How It Shaped Our Nation Today 32

Knowledgeable Rippa Villa guides lead these educa tional and interesting tours. “The site itself is a hundred acres, so there's a lot to see outside as well,” he says.

Initially, the Trust inherited an empty house. “What that has allowed us to do is go through a pretty substantial step-by-step restoration starting on the first floor, as well as determining how the house should really look. So we've started to move furniture back in,” says Eric.

Boft.org

33| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/THOMPSONSSTATIONSEPTEMBER 2022

The Trust offers a variety of tours including battlefield tours, slavery tours, and a behind-the-scenes tour. “We also just launched the Lost Cause & the Legacy of the Confederacy tour, so there are about six different ways you can experience the site.”

“We're returning Rippa Villa to what it's always been, which is an important historic site. Sites like these are the key to understanding our past, and if we truly understand our past, it gives us a much better perspective on who we are as a people right now.”

When the Battle of Franklin Trust was chosen to take over management of Rippa Villa last year, it was an opportu nity to reopen the home and property to the public to learn about its incredible history and the impact it had on Franklin during the American Civil War. The Trust was the perfect organization to do so – the nonprofit’s mission is to preserve, understand, and interpret the story of a people forever impacted by the American Civil War.

The Greek Revival-style home was built in the early 1850s by Nat Cheairs, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. “His family were substantial landowners and owned a huge number of slaves, so the Cheairs family and the house and site itself are really rel ics of that era,” he says.

“There's the battlefield which is adjacent to the property, there’s the remnants or foundation of the first house, a family cemetery and a slave cabin - the grounds around the house are filled with history.”

The Cheairs Family

“Rippa Villa is very closely connected to the Battle of Franklin because everything that happened in and around Spring Hill on November 29th, 1864, is a direct path to Franklin the next day,” says Eric Jacobson, CEO of the Trust.

It’s important, he explains, to share its history with oth ers. “I believe that the middle part of the 19th century is the American crucible. The war was what we had to go through to bind the Union together and to end slavery. We were rede fined and set back on the course to deal with the self-evident truth that all men, all people, are created equal.”

Rippa Villa, along with the Carnton and Carter Houses, two other historic properties directly impacted during the war, receive over 100,000 visitors a year. Eric said in its first year managing and marketing Rippa Villa, the Trust brought in more visitors than the site has ever had, and its marketing has been directed at attracting a broader group of people.

To encourage visitation even more, a ticket to visit all three homes is offered, which is much more cost effective than buying separate tickets to the individual sites.

FAMILY CARE | LIFE + CULTURE Life in Focus ARTICLE BY BRIANNA MELANSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 36

Dr. Rob Szeliga moved to Thompson’s Station with his family when he was 15 and then returned after graduating in 2005 to open Spring Hill’s first optometrist-owned private practice. Spring Hill Eyecare orig inated as a 1,200 square foot office with only his mom and sister as employees. He then added his other sister as his third employee and soon doubled the size of his office space in 2008. In 2018, he built an award-winning 8,300 square foot des tination for eye care on Highway 31. Now he employs over twenty team members including two other full-time associ ate doctors, Dr. Virgilio Gozum and Dr. Kathryn Beckman. Dr. Rob played baseball in both high school and college. When he was 16, he took the mound to pitch and could not even see the catcher’s signals. So his mother took him to the eye doctor to get him contact lenses which significantly impacted the way he played. He couldn’t believe how many more details he could see, like the stitches on the ball. Imagine trying to play the game you love, but not being able to focus because of your vision.

Around the same time he was playing baseball in high school, his mom was diag nosed with glaucoma. When he would go with her to eye doctor appointments, he gained an interest in optometry and knew he was going to make it his career. Because your sight affects everything you do, it’s important to take care of your eyes. Dr. Rob says, “It’s a great career because about every 20 minutes I get to change the way someone sees the world.” When patients visit, they can see how part of local history is ingrained in the new building. On the property used to stand an 1870 farmhouse and greenhouse. Shortly after getting his driver’s license, Dr. Rob’s parents would send him there to purchase fresh vegetables for dinner. When the farmhouse could not be saved, Dr. Rob and his wife scoured everything from attic to cellar collecting bits of his tory, from fireplace mantels to wavy glass windows and doors, to repurpose and use in the new office.

Spring Hill Eyecare has come a long way since 2005. Dr. Rob and his team are proud of all they have accomplished to give the community the best eye care possible. In turn, giving the community a better qual ity of life… and more accurate fastballs. Come

Now Spring Hill Eyecare has a unique 900 square foot Sports Vision Training gym. During 45-minute sessions, athletes can improve their depth perception, periph eral awareness, visual memory, reaction, time eye-hand coordination and more to take their game to the next level.

In addition to seeing patients, Dr. Rob gets out of his comfort zone by traveling to different cities as an industry consultant to give lectures about new contact lenses or equipment. By consulting for these companies, he can sometimes get new technology months in advance. He admits, “I tell my patients I can offer you these contact lenses before anyone else because I suffer through my fear of public speak ing.” He refers to Spring Hill Eyecare as a one-stop-shop because they offer every thing except for major surgeries (for those they perform the pre- and post-op care). They even have an entire suite dedicated to dry eye treatments. He and his wife are getting ready to build their dream home in Thompson’s Station. They have their hands full with three kids who do numerous extracurriculars. He says, “We have a 16-year-old that partic ipates in travel baseball, cross country, wrestling, hurdles, piano, guitar, and saxophone. We have a seven-year-old who does piano lessons and gymnastics. He jokes, “Then we have a four-year-old who’s not allowed to do anything yet because we don’t have enough time.” The joke’s on him as his wife just informed him, she is signed up for tap dance and ballet. They love raising their kids where he grew up.

At Cornerstone Construction Co. fam ily means everything. From the time he was born, President/Owner and Licensed General Contractor Zach Goodgame grew up going along to job sites with his dad, Tommy Goodgame, who owned local concrete company, Concrete Unlimited. Throughout his early years, his father engrained in him the importance of a hard work ethic and princi ples of operating a business. Zach learned everything literally from the ground up as he worked alongside his dad as a teenager pouring concrete. When he found out he was expecting his first son, Zach knew he wanted to build a good foundation to provide for him. By the time he was almost 20, he started to feel the physical pains of the backbreaking concrete industry, which led to a new dream and sparked his interest in home construc tion. After spending several years working for a company in the construction trade, he pursued his contractor’s license in his early 20s, and started to build houses on his own. In 2015, he took a leap of faith and followed in his father’s footsteps by launching his own company Cornerstone Construction Co. The Franklin, TN native combined his expertise and inspired vision to build his homegrown business in Franklin, designing custom homes with creative vision.

old school business morals, where looking someone in the eye and shaking their hand meansEvensomething.”whengoing out on his own to start the company, Zach kept the family spirit strong in his business by having his sister Kaci Goodgame serve as Office Manager, Account, and Billing Professional, overseeing all of the logistics and behind-the-scenes elements that keep the business running. In some of his early builds, his dad’s company was even hired to pour concrete driveways on the houses. While he may not be blood, Principle Project Manager, Superintendent, and Consultant, Allen Bledsoe, is a vital part of the Cornerstone Construction family. “We would not know what to do without Allen. He keeps the ship on course,” explains Kaci. And with the addition of Project Manager Tom Ford last year, the company continues to steadily move At Cornerstone Constructionforward. Co., no idea is too big or farfetched. With clients having creative input from start to finish, Zach and his team work to bring clients’ dreams to life as they build luxury homes on some of the most beautiful land in Williamson County. The business slogan for their father’s com pany was “No Limit” and like his father, Zach has a similar motto for his company. “There is no limit to what we can build." Along with their creativity and stunning designs, the Cornerstone team is known for their attention to detail and high-quality crafts manship in each home they construct.

The ties between the Goodgame family were strengthened even more when their father passed away unexpectedly. The lessons and wisdom that their dad passed on to them throughout their lives are carried into the work they do every single day, as they keep his legacy and spirit alive. “Our dad was quite the character,” shares Kaci. “What was really unique about him is how he treated every client like a friend. I mean Dad had more friends than anyone I knew. He really, really did like to get to know the people that he serviced and the community around it.”

As they continue to grow both their father’s business Concrete Unlimited and Cornerstone Construction Co., their father’s example of integrity and relationship build ing can be seen in the very personal way they conduct business. From their staff to their clients, everyone they come in contact with is treated with the utmost transpar ency and openness, being cared for like family. “My vision for Cornerstone is to leave behind a legacy my children will be proud of,” says Zach. At Cornerstone Construction Co., the Goodgames continue to keep the family spirit and their father’s legacy alive as they build new houses for families to make memories in for years to come. C3oftn.com

HAPPY HOUR | LIFE + CULTURE FLOWWINETHELET ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GINA WHALEN P I C K E R S C R E E K WINERY Phil and Lydia George 42

If you find yourself burned out on the day-in, day-out of city life, Pickers Creek Winery in Lewisburg is calling your name. As they are about to round the corner on ten years of business, they know just what you need to recharge from the grind –wine, music and atmosphere. If you haven’t stumbled upon it yet, it’s time to take a short, scenic drive down Highway 431 and check it out.

Phil and Lydia George were living normal, everyday lives in Smyrna where Phil practiced law for thirty-five years when they formed a group made up of six couples that enjoyed tasting and learning about six different wines each month. “I’ve always been into wine,” said Phil. Eventually, Phil and Lydia began visiting places like Sonoma and Napa, California and expanding their knowledge of wine. While visiting a local winery here in middle Tennessee, Phil became inspired. “We were there one day, and I looked around and thought, ‘I can do this,’” said Phil. They bought the land in Lewisburg from Phil’s parents, Elinor and Macklin “Mack” George, a local musician and farmer for whom one of the winery’s most pop ular reds is named.

43| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/THOMPSONSSTATIONSEPTEMBER 2022

Phil’s brother, Kenneth George, who also lives on the property is the vineyard manager and music director. He even plays a little music himself some nights. While visiting the winery, folks can taste the fabulous wines while enjoying Lydia’s and the family’s artwork from paintings to mosaics to a beautiful stained glass window that is dis played as soon as you enter the tasting room. You can make yourself at home as you relax in the swing on the spacious porch or take a stroll through the grapevines and soak up the beauty of middle Tennessee. From spring to fall, you can enjoy live music on Saturday nights as you sip wine by the bonfire or around a table with your friends and loved ones. People come from far and wide to enjoy Pickers Creek Winery.

They started small with a little bottling in their shed on week ends and slowly worked their way up, finally transitioning into retirement and running Pickers Creek Winery full-time. What was once just a hay field is now home to the grapes, to the winery itself and home to the Georges and their dog, Bella. The winery is completely family-operated.

“We have a lady that drives up here from Louisiana, buys three cases of Blackberry Blues, and drives back to Louisiana,” said Phil. Kenneth described a night when there were visitors from France, Haiti, Panama, Finland and the Netherlands all at the same time. That’s easy to believe once you’ve enjoyed the warm, inviting Pickers Creek experi ence for yourself. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, and Muscadine grapes which thrive in middle Tennessee, Pickers Creek wines are second to none. Their selection ranges from white to reds, semi-sweets, blushes, and fruit wines. One of the most popular bottles is Mack’s Band, a Cabernet Sauvignon named after Phil and Kenneth’s father and his band, the Tennessee Variety Boys. Not only do their wines embody

Pickers Creek Winery is one of the best outings you can have this side of Middle Tennessee. If you can’t make it this weekend, be sure to mark your calendars for the winery’s tenth anniver sary celebration on November 19th. “We’re pulling out all the stops,” said Phil. As usual, the party will host fabulous live music to set the festive mood. Food trucks will be on site including Chef Joe Love’s Crepes, Cousins Maine Lobster, and more. Good music, good food, and a bottle of your favorite Pickers Creek wines is all you need for a perfect, southern, Saturday night. PickersCreekWinery.com

Saturday night’s live music is what really makes the winery spe cial. Bands, some bluegrass, some Americana, set up in the pavil ion and play out across the grounds for visitors to enjoy along with their wine and their loved ones. Some Saturdays, crowds get pretty big, and an extra wine tasting table is set up outside to accommodate everyone who wants a taste. If you forget to bring snacks that evening, don’t worry. The winery sells light snacks such as cheese and crackers. They also feature Chef Joe Love’s Crepes on Saturday nights that Phil says are to die for.

HAPPY HOUR | LIFE + CULTURE terrific flavors, but many of them have clever names related to classic rock songs which is a nod to the Georges’ love for music and fun. Some of those include Three Dog White which is a lovely white wine represented on the label by their white dog, Bella, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vino which is a dry, Tennessee Table red wine named after the 1968 hit by Iron Butterfly, and Proud Berry, a strawberry table wine which features a painted strawberry on the label that strongly resembles a leggy Tina Turner singing into a microphone. “It’s all about the music here,” Lydia said who hap pens to make all the label art herself. Blackberry Blues is another favorite that is so delectable, Lydia recommends topping ice cream or other desserts with it. When it’s time to bottle, Pickers Creek makes a party out of that too. “We strictly use volunteers to help us bottle,” said Lydia. Many of the winery’s regulars come, set up an assembly line, and bottle away. “We’ve got one couple that has come and helped us bottle ten times now. If we bottled without them, they’d be mad at us!” Phil joked. It usually takes around four hours depending on the day and how much they have to bottle, and it sounds like every minute of it makes for a good time.
