The Sisterhood of Motherhood

"Successful mothers are not the ones that never struggled. They are the ones that never gave up despite the struggles."

Our community shines with bright, intelligent, strong women. Moms, fur baby moms, sisters, daughters and soul sister friends. It's so important to support each other. My best friend says, "We celebrate the good times together and we walk through the hard times together." This is so true. In the words of Glennon Doyle, mom, author and activist. Life can be “Brutiful” both brutal and beautiful.

In this issue honoring the "Ladies" we go behind the scenes with 3 business owners in The Woodlands, we hear the parenting mantras of 3 community moms and we discover the fabulous founding ladies of Wine and Food Week. Our cover story features the anticipated series of events of the Wine and Food Week, now celebrating their 20th Anniversary.

We hope you enjoy reading about local author Lorrie Parise's Biography of an Everyday Couple, an ode to her parents' very own love story. Dive into art with several featured artists in this issue.

And if you're looking for a girls' trip, couple's retreat or family getaway, you will be surprised to learn about the JL Bar Ranch, Resort & Spa, a hidden gem in West Texas that caters to guys and gals.

It's Springtime, it's Mother's Day, it's Graduation and the end of yet another school year.  Soak it all in ladies!

Cheers!

RAISE A GLASS

Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Wine and Food Week

The 20th Anniversary of Wine and Food Week is upon us and the theme is A Gem of A Celebration.

A few of events include: Get Frosted at Rose Way—a fashion show, chef/bachelor auction to benefit Southern Smoked—the foundation started by Chris Shepherd and Lindsey Brown, Hall of Fame Inductees for 2024. The event happens on June 6, at The Peach Orchard Venue.

On June 7, at The Club at Carlton Woods, The Ladies of the Vine Tasting, Panel, and Luncheon features many vibrant women in wine, but we went behind the scenes to talk to a few of the women making it happen.

The luncheon spotlights the fabulous Houston and Texas-based area females in the wine industry.

Monique Studak, luncheon moderator, has been in the wine business going on 30 years, predominantly on the sales side while simultaneously putting together educational programming and doing wine presentations through the lens of connecting others about wine. She has a variety of certifications behind her name and teaches at the Texas Wine School - but that’s just one of her many hats.

After 16 years at E&J Gallo Winery and seven years with Pernod Ricard, she

Photo, opposite page: Kathy Womack revamps her infamous Women in Wine poster for the 20th anniversary of Wine and Food Week.

On a local level,  Women of Wine  charities have raised over $734,000 since its inception. It is run by all volunteers and no paid staff. Their goal is to raise and give back one million dollars through three to four events a year by their 20th anniversary in 2027.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of every organization. The hundreds of Women of Wine volunteers make it happen every year and are passionate about helping to support other women in a time of need through the generous donations that benefit The Houston  Women’s Center.

stepped out in 2021 to start Thirst For Knowledge, Monique's own company promoting wine education, moderating panels, and sales training.

“More women now than ever are becoming more involved in the winemaking and master sommelier community”, says Monique Studak, Principal at Thirst for Knowledge.“Only five percent of the wineries in California are owned by women. The number of lead female winemakers is approximately 17 percent but the graduation rate from UC Davis’ continuing education viticulture program is as high as 64 percent some years, so there is a wave coming.”

Kathy Womack is the featured artist for the event and in her 16th year of doing Women and Wine. Constance McDerby invited Kathy out for the 20th anniversary. Of course, Kathy is reviving the Women in Wine poster and bringing along her original pieces to the showings and other events.

"The key to life is doing what you love," Kathy says. "Everybody should find their talent."

This new generation of females supporting one another is ten-fold, shared Kathy, compared to when she was coming up in art circles. Women tend to rally and show up for each other, and this is more evident through social media, but it's happening in every community.

Next, Kathy hopes to jump into large-scale pieces, focusing more in quantities and scaling back on the shows and art festivals and is opening a studio in Houston this summer. Returning to her home base of Houston, a large audience of collectors is here to welcome her back.

Constance McDerby, founder of Food & Vine Time Productions and Wine and Food Week, is an anchor in our community, and shared how the Food and Wine Weekend came to fruition as a group effort with a team of excellent volunteers. Many of her staff members came out of volunteer roles, like Sherri Segari, who has been

working for 20 years and has a passion for food and beverage. Another Woodlands resident, Jennifer Thompson, makes the magic happen and combines all the pieces to promote the events. A graphic designer helps manage the websites and designs all the promotional material and beautiful visuals. Another staffer, a culinary curator, has been with the team for 12 years. The Director of Volunteer Operations, a volunteer role, started in the Galveston Food & Wine event and has been in the role for 22 years. Volunteers live all over Texas and will drive hours for events and work multiple days. It's like a wine family explained Constance. They travel together and have developed lifelong friendships by sharing a glass of wine and a laugh. Appropriately, Constance's tagline is:  raise a glass, share a laugh, meet a new friend, and take it all in.

"I'm so blessed and want to give back in any way as others have been so gracious paying it forward and teaching us what we didn't know, that we always try to be that for others," shares Constance.

"There is a constant evolution of styles with wine and opportunities to learn," says Monique. "When our food changes, we get more excited about our wine opportunities and the expansion of our wine offerings."

If you like wine, the conversation evolves based on your own life experiences. What you like today might differ two years from now because you went to Argentina, Tuscany, or right here in the Woodlands. wineandfoodweek.com

Grape Trends

According to Monique Studak, Gallo Winery put much effort into pushing the prosecco market when introducing La Marca. Everyone recognizes the light blue label of sparkling wine; bottles are popping all over the U.S. every weekend. “There is a funnel of really talented people making very thoughtful decisions,” shares Monique. “Rose, for instance. We weren’t drinking this much rose eight years ago.”
Monique shared that sparkling wine is now being produced in England. Most of England was out of the grape-growing zone because of its cooler climates without warmer summers, but now, it’s warmer than it used to be. This is perfect for high-acid wines and grapes with beautiful bases for sparkling wines.

In celebration of our May “Ladies” issue and Mother’s Day, I interviewed three amazing women and business owners in our community. I wanted to capture a side of their personalities that their clients may not be see in their work environment. Thinking of the questions was such a pleasure but the real joy is in reading their answers!

1. WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY OR LAUGHTER IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK?

Seeing a patient see their results the first time and that mixture of tears and laughter. Nothing feels better.

2. WHAT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN YOU IN YOUR CAREER AND LIFE?

Seeing the difference I can create. In both my work and family life I love seeing that what I can imagine and what I can achieve can both be the same.

3. WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM AS A LITTLE GIRL? NO MATTER HOW FUNNY OR OUTRAGEOUS!

I wanted to be an actress! I loved making people laugh and performing. But in third grade, my dad took me out to dinner and “explained” to me that it would not be the career for me. Haha

4. WHAT DOES YOUR “PERFECT DAY” LOOK LIKE IF YOU HAVE A CLEAR CALENDAR?

I’m honestly not sure what a clear calendar looks like! I thrive on being busy and on the move. But a perfect day is having a great day in the operating room and getting home on time to spend time with my girls and family.

Dr. Leah Zils, DDS, PLLC

1. WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY OR LAUGHTER IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK?

I find joy in listening to my patients and getting to know them as a person. I learn something new from my patients every day! It’s the people that walk into the practice that make every day interesting and different.

2. WHAT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN YOU IN YOUR CAREER AND LIFE?

My best self is when I am in an environment that fosters lifelong learning, critical thinking and the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. I find myself happiest when I have the opportunity to apply what I have learned for the greater good.

3. WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM AS A LITTLE GIRL? NO MATTER HOW FUNNY OR OUTRAGEOUS!

I wanted to take care of and raise monkeys.

4. WHAT DOES YOUR “PERFECT DAY” LOOK LIKE IF YOU HAVE A CLEAR CALENDAR?

My perfect day is working out and spending time with the family outside on a cool sunny day. Ending the day with a good dinner is always nice too!

Melissa Young Owner, Corporate Incentives

1. WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY OR LAUGHTER IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK?

I love people.  I enjoy the interactions with my team, our clients, and our community. While we’re technically in the business of selling things, we’re really in the business of relationships and problem-solving, and I get immense joy out of being able to do that every day.

2. WHAT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN YOU IN YOUR CAREER AND LIFE?

I am at my best in both work and life when I get to surround myself with a diverse community of people and interests; where each of us has an opportunity to add to each other and benefit from the relationships that we have. Sitting still doesn’t suit me, so the more opportunities that I have around me, the better I am.

3. WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM AS A LITTLE GIRL? NO MATTER HOW FUNNY OR OUTRAGEOUS!

My little girl dream is so boring.  I wanted to be a lawyer – born out of my love of arguing and believing that I was right, regardless of facts or logic.

4. WHAT DOES YOUR “PERFECT DAY” LOOK LIKE IF YOU HAVE A CLEAR CALENDAR?

I really enjoy getting a mix of the important people in my life, coupled with some time for simple rest and relaxation. Good food, good drinks, and good company make for a perfect day.  Could be made better by a private jet.  I love to travel.

Two Arts

Jesse and Kinsey Lane talk Colored Pencils and Clay

Jesse and Kinsey Lane met at high school over lunch! Now married, and together for 16 years, they have developed their independent passions, and both are actively teaching and creating in their unique artistic fields.

I met with Jesse and Kinsey in their palatial “Woodland Lane Ceramics” studio, a purpose-built space where Kinsey works on her signature stoneware creations, as well as teaching around 60 students per week.  Her work consists of wheel-thrown ceramics, which she demonstrated during my visit, making something I know to be difficult, look incredibly easy!

Kinsey’s luminary work is exceptional, after throwing the vessel on the wheel, she meticulously cuts and removes sections of the “walls” creating open shapes for light

to shine through.  She tells me, “A lot of my work is about nature, especially trees, my luminary pieces are about light and shadow. What’s cool about these is that when you put a candle inside, they cast a shadow, they cast a shape all around, and it stems from the artwork.”

Saggar work is another favorite. Saggar is a finishing method for ceramic pieces using unexpected materials which make shapes and marks on the surface of the pot. In these pieces, Kinsey uses various materials, including steel wool, peanut butter, coffee grounds, seaweed and salt.  “I use peanut butter, applied in a spiral”, the spiral is a constant in her work, and it can usually be found on the base.

Kinseys ceramic works are available for purchase at Tartaglia Gallery in The Woodlands.

Where Kinsey loves the experimentation and science of her process, Jesse works in 2D and has a different approach to his practice.

Working in colored pencil, his work is methodical, intricately detailed and concise. After completing his first piece, a water portrait of Kinsey, in what is now his defining look, he has become known for his water-inspired portraits of intimate moments pertaining to the self and romantic relationships. The movement of water flowing across faces and figures results in trickles, drips and planes of contrasting light across the body, Jesse also draws figures completely immersed in the ocean, cocooned in their love for each other and oblivious to everything else. Working in a realistic, hyperrealistic style, Jesse’s work has a dreamlike quality which he describes as imaginative realism, concluding in a blend of imagination and realism.

“I’m always trying to create private moments, where the person is within their own thoughts. In my ocean pieces, a lot of

them are about falling in love, and I’ve referenced the ocean as it’s like this fantasy place, this magical place, it’s weightless, it’s kind of the one fantasy place in the world that we all know exists, there’s no gravity, on the other hand, it’s very dangerous, and we’re out of our element, we’re stepping out into the unknown, it’s very dangerous and very magical simultaneously, and whatever it is, you’re in it. You’re in it, over your head, and so that’s how I parallel love with the ocean.” He tells me.

Holbein and Prismacolor colored pencils are among the brands that Jesse uses, as they are wax-based. He has also worked with Derwent and two drawings of Kinsey adorn the boxes for Derwent Lightfast Colored Pencils.

The winner of countless awards recognized nationally and internationally, Jesse is represented exclusively by RJD Gallery in Michigan, who offer original pieces and prints of his work for purchase.

If you are interested in learning his techniques, he teaches workshops around the country as well as providing a wide selection of tutorials on his website –jesselaneart.com

When asked about their creative mantra, both Jesse and Kinsey said, “Never, ever, ever give up”.

James Archer was the founder of Multi-Chem Group, LLC, one of the world's largest oil and gas service companies in the world prior to selling to Halliburton in 2011. Believing that their own lives were greatly enriched by giving, the Archers share their wealth with many charitable causes benefiting youth and the aging population. They also established the James B. and Lois R Archer Charitable Foundation.

Acquisition of the ranch came shortly after, blending the owners' love of Texas game hunting and ranch land with country music. With a successful Nashville-based entertainment company called MV2 Entertainment, you will see many country music awards scattered throughout the ranch.

The completion of their first major project in 2013 was the ranch's private FBO airport and soon after the Lonesome Creek Lodge building in 2015. The Archers wanted to create and share with the public the hospitality and essence that is Pure Texas. They wanted families, corporate groups and individuals to be completely immersed in the lifestyle that truly makes Texas great. From the moment you cross the big gates, you are treated like you are family. The goal is to give guests unrivaled service, with the casual cowboy luxury that the Texas Hill Country is known for. We want you to bring your new cowboy hat and boots and get them dusty and properly broken in the real way. Whether that’s by learning to shoot on our world-class range, going on a ranch excursion on our military truck, taking a sunset trail ride on our retired reining horses or by dancing the night away at

one of our many concerts. We truly hope guests leave knowing the spirit of what makes Texas unique and create memories that will last them a lifetime!

JL Bar amenities offer guests the very best of the best in convenience and quality for all your needs.  The General Store offers a wide range of clothing, guns, ammo, jewelry, boots, bags, hats and much more. The main lodge includes a large main living room area with multiple seating options for lounging around and a full bar that is popular for cocktail hour.

A 900+ bottle wine cellar, a pool table, shuffleboard and karaoke machine. This is also where the gorgeous pool area and fire pits are located (where they offer smores for purchase) which is surrounded by a mini putting green and some of the best views of the ranch. Visit the MVBrew Coffee Shop or work out in the fully equipped gym.  The Lonesome Creek Lodge is the place for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as our other fully stocked bar. This is also where the Cowboy cookouts take place and smaller concerts.

The ranch is the location for special events. A few times a year the private airport is completely transformed into a concert venue that can accommodate 200+ people. This includes VIP tables, artists' meet and greets, general admission, a large dance floor, a fully equipped stage with professional sound & light crews, multiple bars and beer stations, and more. Get up close and personal with multimillion-dollar planes and jets as they are lit up and displayed for the public to admire. Professional photos are taken during the event as well as a photo booth. The most popular concert of the year is the New Year's Eve Concert which has featured Texas country artist Aaron Watson for multiple years in a row now. Some of the artists we’ve had perform are Aaron Watson, Wade Bowen, Rodger Creager, The Bellamy Brothers, William Beckman and many more!

Rumor has it, they have even had a few A lists celebrities and athletes stay at the ranch with their families!

AN ARTFUL CELEBRATION

A Golden Vision : Through the Eyes of the Artist

MAKER’S STUDIO | ARTS + CULTURE
40

The Woodlands turns 50 this year!

The Woodlands has a marvelous collection of public art, and we are very fortunate to live in an environment where we can regularly encounter beautiful and thought-provoking sculptures, murals and art benches, on a day-to-day basis. However, there is also a lesser-known, thriving community of artists, busy in their studios, garages, attics and spare bedrooms, immersed in their passions of drawing, sculpting, painting, creating with fiber, photography, clay, oil, graphite and even digital imagery, often working until the wee hours of the day.

Visual art is a means of self-expression, a portrayal of ideas, ideals, statements, thoughts and feelings, in which the artist anticipates a connection with the viewer.

“A Golden Vision: through the eyes of the artist”, is an exhibition of the visual artists in our midst, presented by nonprofit, The Woodlands Arts Council and

by

The Howard Hughes Corporation and The Woodlands Township. “This exhibition is a showcase of the broad spectrum of art and our many talented artists in The Woodlands area, we really are a creative hub” says exhibition curator, Annette Palmer. The invitational

exhibition denotes a selection of our independent artists and includes many who are represented by the growing number of galleries and art leagues in the region, the exhibition spans everything from figurative art to abstract art presented in both 2D and 3D. “A Golden Vision” unites our community with the joy of visual art.

“This exhibition marks the celebration of a new stylistic voyage featuring area artists” commented The Woodlands Arts Council Executive Director Jenny Carattini-Wright.

“A Golden Vision” opens on Thursday May 9th between 6 - 8:30 pm and will be on display until July 11th. Viewing hours are 1-4 pm every Tues, Weds and Thurs, at The Woodlands Arts Council Gallery on 9450, Grogans Mill Rd, ste.160.

Visit The Woodlands Arts Council website for further information regarding artist talks, presentations and demonstrations. A percentage of all proceeds will benefit their continued support and promotion of the performing and visual arts in the area.

BIOGRAPHY OF AN EVERYDAY COUPLE

LORRIE PARISE, LOCAL AUTHOR, AND HER PARENTS’ LOVE STORY.
MUST SEE | ARTS + CULTURE
46
Alice and Fidel Flores

Lorrie Parise, author of the nonfiction book, Biography of an Everyday Couple, has garnered five-star ratings from both Reader’s Favorite® and Writer’s Digest. Having accumulated more than 25 years of experience in marketing, public relations, and community relations, Lorrie presently serves as the Director of Public Relations and Community Relations, Houston Region, including The Woodlands, for Howard Hughes.

Parise’s educational background includes a Master of Arts degree in English-Communications from St. Mary’s University and a BA degree in Communication Studies from the University of St. Thomas, both within her home state of Texas.

Lorrie has received numerous accolades including the 2023 STAR Award for Marketing Professional of the Year from the Texas Association of Builders and the 2017 “Outstanding Involvement in Supporting the Community,” Viva! Award from the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce Houston-The Woodlands-Gulf Coast Chapter.

Biography of an Everyday Couple focuses on the lives of her parents, Alice and Fidel Flores, individuals who embodied the essence of ordinary, everyday people yet were extraordinary. The nonfiction story captures both a touching love story and the heartfelt influence this unassuming couple wielded on those around them.

The story of individuals like her mom and dad serves as a reminder that greatness isn’t solely reserved for the famous or the highly accomplished. Everyday actions, kindness and connections can leave a significant impact on others, demonstrating that even the simplest gestures can create profound effects. The impact ordinary people have on the world is often underestimated. It’s important to recognize and celebrate the unsung heroes in our midst, who quietly but consistently contribute to making the world a better place.

Beyond her career and literary pursuits, Lorrie Parise is a musician, songwriter, and singer. She even contributes her own songs to the narrative.

Actively involved in the community, Lorrie serves on the Board of Directors for the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber, The Woodlands Symphony Orchestra and is a 2019 graduate of Leadership Montgomery County. Lorrie hails from a lineage deeply rooted in Texas. She lives in Montgomery County where her three children and three grandchildren also reside.

Biography of an Everyday Couple is available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle edition.

mother’s MANTRAS

Three local moms share their guidance and love

To honor Mother's Day, we are featuring "Mother's Mantras" of three moms in our community (me included.)  Motherhood is the beautiful dance of two journeys - our children growing up and the evolution of ourselves as they grow.

As a mother and an artist, I once designed a necklace that said these three words, "Mother. Daughter. Sister." We are all at least one if not all three. We are each included in the tribes of Motherhood and Sisterhood, whether it be actual sisters or friends, and we are all daughters of God, the Universe and the world.

Our children learn from how we live, what we teach them, and what they watch happen in their own worlds. It is up to us as to what we expose them to, protect them from and in which direction to guide them. The manual they gave us at the hospital was very helpful, right? What would we have done without that? It sure helped me get nowhere since such a manual doesn't exist.

My North Star as a mother has always been to watch, to listen, to learn from my own two children. I watched them find their way in school, which classes they enjoyed or excelled in, their strengths and talents in sports, activities, etc. I listened to their excitement and disappointments or worries and watched them grow in the next natural direction of their journey.

I never forced the "obligatory" piano lesson practice and actually had a mom ask me at my daughter's lessons, "How do you not have daily fights about practicing?" My response was

that there are no fights, Jaye enjoys playing. She eventually progressed from piano lessons to songwriting and moved into a music school. It was obvious that she had outgrown the lesson books and wanted to move on from classical into modern. She still loves music.

I could tell my son was struggling with managing football and his grades and he wanted to focus on track so I encouraged a conversation with his coach and he finished strong in both his grades and track in his Junior and Senior year. But it's not about the sports practices or activities in life - it is about taking the temperature of their enthusiasm and teaching our kids that it's okay to pivot and change course. It's simply a natural progression.

When my son graduated from high school, he wrote me a letter thanking me for always "making sure he was okay" no matter what was going on in my day. He comically apologized for getting mad at me for not buying Fruity Pebbles cereal and instead insisting on natural healthy food. And last but not least he thanked me for always expecting that he do the "next right thing."

Now that my kids are growing into young adults, I feel that motherhood has taken on a whole new life.  I have enjoyed each stage of the journey so far and am looking forward to what’s next.  I have 3 boys ages 19, 16 and 15.  They are awesome kids, and I am so blessed to be their mom.  I was asked about my parenting style recently. I think it would be considered laid back, but my approach isn’t.  I try hard to be a very intentional parent when it comes to teaching my kids and can only hope they learn the lessons they need when they need them.  For example, I have had some personal medical issues over the last 10 years, and I believe that this has shown my sons how to persevere and keep a good attitude even when faced with adversity.

One of the things that I have taken to heart is something my mother-in-law told me when my kids were young. She said to get involved with whatever your kids do.  She is (aside from my own mom) one of the wisest women I know!  So, I got involved and got out of my comfort zone to do the things.  Be the one that helps so you know what is going on and your kids know you know.  Aside from knowing what is going on, I have truly developed some amazing friendships through volunteering my time to help with my kids’ activities.  Some of my favorite people in the world are people I have met through PTO, Team Mom, Room Mom, Quarterback Club, Highlander Homerun Club,

Confirmation Leader at church, etc.  What I have found is that these are the moms who also value their families and want to show their kids that they need to give back to the community.  I am so grateful for this advice, and I am still volunteering even with my college kid!

Being the mom of older kids is awesome.  You can begin to see the fruits of your labor as you are able to have adult conversations, meet their friends, see the decisions they are making.  I think this stage is my favorite so far!  Whatever the stage, being Aidan, Colin and Brady’s mom is the BIGGEST JOY AND PRIVILEGE of my life!

Missy and all her boys!

MaMa, Mommy, Mom, Friend.  I am the very proud momma to three incredible boys:  Will, 21, Steele, 19 and Magnus, 15.   In the beginning of my motherhood journey, we had a goal of raising tough, well-loved boys. I preached to them from a very young age, God blessed them with the greatest gift… EACH OTHER! They were “Best Brothers” and brothers take care of each other. When my oldest son Will was diagnosed

with a rare, degenerative brain condition, juvenile Batten disease, this mantra became more important than ever.  My boys being happy and healthy became our focus, and while I believe in rules; order was secondary. A diagnosis of a terminal disease taught us what truly mattered.

I had to adapt my mothering to adjust to our “road less traveled” home life. With an ill child at home and our HOPE fundraising efforts to help support a medical discovery to save him in full swing through their childhood, our boys were often in front of a lot of people, talking about very adult challenges from a young age.  They became resilient, strong and courageous in ways that most may never experience. Steele and Magnus lead by example, showing others how to treat Will and others with challenges.  My “Be Kind” mantra was personified through their actions.

As my boys got older, I found myself instilling things in them that sustain and inspire me daily: Hold onto your Faith, Believe in HOPE and Love Big.  I credit our fight to save Will as our biggest example for my children, because they lived it.  We are grateful for our community which showed the boys that a group of committed people, with a lot of faith, can make a positive change in the world. “Believing all things are possible” remains a steadfast mantra in our home.

When my two older sons graduated last year from High School, I reflected on their lifetime of memories. I found myself reminiscing through photos of my three little boys who now tower over me.  I had to continue to remind myself…I was there for every single day.  From their first smile in the middle of the night feeding as infants, to their biggest triumphs in life.  I have been the first voice they heard nearly every morning as they got out of bed and the last voice they heard every evening as they got into bed. My boys are the greatest gifts in my life, and my greatest honor is being their Mom and now, Friend.

A Treasure Trove of

Winemaking Inspiration

In the wine industry, experience breeds excellence. This is certainly true of Napa Valley’s storied Cuvaison winery, which was founded in 1969, the same year the US landed on the moon. With its focus on the cool climate of the Los Carneros AVA, Cuvaison was one of the pioneering wineries that shaped the modern era of California winemaking, helping to catapult Napa Valley onto the global stage as one of the world’s most revered wine regions.

More than half a century later, guided by the steady hands of Winemaker Steve Rogstad, Cuvaison has earned legendary status for the balance, vibrant fruit and vineyard-inspired complexity of its estate-grown Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, as well as its dazzling Sauvignon Blancs and Merlots. For Steve, who joined Cuvaison in 2002, the secret to Cuvaison’s enduring success is the team’s intimate understanding of their Tai Estate Vineyard. Located north of San Pablo Bay, Tai Vineyard was acquired by Cuvaison’s owners, the Schmidheiny family, in 1979. The land was selected

Cuvaison Winery

for its ideal mix of clay and loam soils, and for its unique marine-influenced microclimate, where wind and fog ensure summer temperatures rarely exceed 80 o F.

Today, after decades of thoughtful replanting, Tai Vineyard (which honors the late Alexander Tai Schmidheiny) features 125 acres of vines sculpted into a mosaic of almost 30 blocks of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, along with Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Semillon, Syrah and Grenache. “As part of our continuous 20-year replanting cycle, we’ve created a very diverse vineyard, with numerous clones, elevations, and exposures,” says Rogstad, who has spent nearly 40 years crafting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Los Carneros. “Tai offers a treasure trove of winemaking inspiration.”

While Cuvaison’s Estate tier has earned renown for the character, complexity and value, Steve and his team are continually digging deeper, focusing on key clones and vineyard blocks to create fascinating Small Lot wines like the sumptuous Méthode Béton Sauvignon Blanc, the dazzling

"At the pinnacle of the Cuvaison portfolio are the Legacy wines, which include the luxurious ATS Chardonnay and the profoundly complex Adda Pinot Noir, both of which are named after members of the Schmidheiny family."

Hedon, Coeurtina and Kite Tail Chardonnays, and the alluring Spire and Mariafeld Pinot Noirs. At the pinnacle of the Cuvaison portfolio are the Legacy wines, which include the luxurious ATS Chardonnay and the profoundly complex Adda Pinot Noir, both of which are named after members of the Schmidheiny family.

While estate wines have long been the focus at Cuvaison, in recent years, the team has gone farther afield, applying their half-century of experience with cool-climate varietals to explore Micro Lot wines from other acclaimed sites, including a Durell Vineyard Chardonnay, a Vivio Vineyard Syrah, and Pinot Noirs from such iconic vineyards as Gap’s Crown, Fiddlestix, Sun Chase and Dutton Ranch. Wherever you begin your exploration of Cuvaison’s wines, you’ll discover the kind of artistry and excellence that only a half-century of experience can provide.
